Polyhydramnios | Causes, Signs & Symptoms | Nursing Lecture

  • Polyhydramnios is defined as when liquor amnii exceeds 2000 ml, or when AFI (amniotic fluid index) is more than 25 c.m. or SDP (single deepest pocket) is more than 8 c.m. Here in this lecture causes & Signs and symptoms are explained.
    Etiology -
    1. Idiopathic is most common
    2. Fetal factors
    - Anencephaly
    - Cleft lip & cleft palate
    - Spina bifida
    - Rh isoimmunization
    - Fetal infections
    - Esophageal & duodenal atresia
    3. Maternal factors
    4. Placenta- chorioangioma of placenta
    Sign & Symptoms -
    1. Increased abdominal girth
    2. More fundal height in relation to weeks of gestation
    3. Unstable Lie, malpresentation, unable to palpate fetal body parts
    4. FHS is not audible by stethoscope
    5. Palpitation
    6. Dyspnea
    7. Globular uterus
