I started with my 9’6” 3 Wt a week ago after watching your introduction to Euro nymphing series. Caught fish immediately, doubling or tripling my catch rate. Had trouble detecting takes and lost a good percentage of hook ups because my rod was too fast. Went and bought a mid priced rod, Reddington Hydrogen 11 ft 3 wt. Got my leader dialed in as well, 10 lb Maxima. Now I feel everything and haven’t lost a fish, yet. Thanks a lot.
That's awesome! The Redington Hydrogen 11' 3wt is my backup rod! I lost the top 5 inches on a guide trip but it still feels good!
Came back and revisited this. I’ve spent the whole month of July learning about nymphing. At first it was really rough. And ended up using a bounce rig for a while. After I got my 11ft 3wt nymphing rod I really dug into it and like others have said tripled my catch rate at least! I’m sure I lose a lot because I don’t really see the takes but I certainly feel them! I have a cheap reel with weight forward floating line and rio’s 30 foot nymphing add on
That's awesome! I'm glad to hear you're coming along and enjoying euro nymphing!
One tip for that reel section, i think most important thing in reel is that reel frame is closed so that thin line wont get stuck.
And second tip, you can basicly use whole spool of bi- or tri-color tippet material as your main line. Those nymph lines are basicly made for competition where you cannot use level mono as your ”flyline”.
Third, you should definetly check EUROpean rod manufacturers ;)

I studied a lot before starting Euro nymphing 18 months ago. I landed on a Moonshine Euro nymph rod 3wt because I liked a saltwater rod I bought from them. Great quality and sensitivity and comes with 2 tips and a nice sturdy carrying case. Not breaking the bank : Moonshine Rod Company The Epiphany 3wt - 10'6" $ 299. I spent $100 on my reel from Red's. Still using that set up and having fun every time. I am still learning about feeling the bottom but it's much easier with heavy flies and when a fish strikes, there is no doubt.
I would recommend doing own tying. There is a learning phase but just start simple with larger hooks first (pheasant tail, midge, Squirmy Worm). I stopped by a local fly fish shop and ask for basic supply to start tying few patterns. I would def encourage first timer to do this and not buy a bunch of supplies that you might not need. Then go gradually and invest in more tool as needed. A tying wise is essential - plenty of budget option that work well (I paid $70 for mine) and $50 for a box of basic tools.
I am really looking forward your upcoming Euro Nymphing Advanced Techniques - Fly Selection. I have tied most of the one you have videos on as well as others from Devin Olsen and Fish Fly Food. I have the tendency to use the one that I found beautiful but I am not a fish....Would be great to learn if some pattern work well in tandem (dropper / point). What about identical fly but different weight/color. In any case, the Squirmy Worm you do is a killer ! I have made lot's of color combo with different dubbing but my favorite is rainbow scud dub with pink wormy and silver or dark tungsten bead.
I pretty much love everything you said and totally agree! 🙂 I learned to tie flies when I was fairly young... but I really got into it when I wanted to do something that I couldn't get from a store... I wanted to be able to make my flies exactly as I wanted them! I'll never buy a euro nymph now... I just tie what I want. And i agree... tying nymphs does not need to be complex! Keep it simple... the fish love those simple patterns! Simple and effective is my thing!!! Also... I seriously almost tied the exact pink squirmy you mentioned with the rainbow scud dubbing... Literally had all of the materials laid out but then got distracted and didn't come back to it... I'm totally doing it now 🙂
Thanks for this video, I have been euro nymphing for 3-4 years, my first rod was one you mentioned. It was the Orvis Clearwater 10’ 3 weight that I purchased from a local dealer here in PA where I live. I didn’t enjoy fishing with the rod personally, but others may find it ok. I have recently traded that Orvis for a Cortland Nymph 10’6” in 3 weight, which has been a real improvement for me and made my euro nymph experience so much more fun and rewarding. I am catching more fish and seem to have a better sense of what is happening under the water. I must add that others may have a different experience because in my opinion this all is very much a product of personal preference and technique. Hope this is helpful and tight lines!
Good feedback. I definitely think everyone goes off their own experiences. I've only used the original Cortland Competition and only once but I've heard really good things about the new MK II from some reliable resources! One of them actually likes it better than the Sage ESN if you can believe it!
A good rod that I just tried and used was a very cheap 10ft 2 wt of 3 wt the max catch in touch euro rod it’s only a 100 dollars too
I use a Epiphany 2wt 10’4” from the Moonshine Company. Really love the euro nymph rod. Even come with an extra tip section and comes with a no fault lifetime warranty.

A couple of tips for absolute first timers who might be reluctant and not want to spend a lot to trial it out. To have an initial first go, I’d recommend the Scientific Anglers Absolute Euro leader. White nylon line integrated with sighter and tippet ring. No knots. Just unwrap and ready to fish. Just loop to loop on your existing set up and off you go!
Use your regular 4x mono tippet to start. Why 4x? Your gonna snag a lot, and I’ve found you just have a little more strength to get flies out. Finer fluorocarbon sinks quicker, has less micro drag….but I’ve found this is only true at the $ end. It isn’t so important when beginning. Learning to tuck cast properly will sort most situations.
Use barbless hooks for the same reason, and learn how to de-snag ( get your rod tip 180 degrees behind the hook entry direction and gently lift/flick). Otherwise burn $$$ on flies initially. I wish someone had shown me this as a beginner.
Similarly one fly rig to begin with. It’s just kinder on fly loss and easier to cast.
You will change all this to mono-rig, custom leader,finer tippets, fluro, double tags for flies fished at multiple depths, soon enough. Probably when you invest in a true euro rod etc.
You can also reverse an old WF line and use the long fine end for euro.

Thanks for this advice, I've been thinking about having a go at nymphing and all of these suggestions were what I was thinking of doing as it all seemed pretty logical as a starting point but it's easy to think you need x,y and z just to give it a go.

Well, maybe a bit more detail in how to manage a mono rig while on the water. It looks like it would handle and feel a bit different from the typical floating fly lines we’re currently used to using. I'm fairly new to Euro nymphing, a couple of years under my belt now. My fly fishing partners got me into it and I'm enjoying it. My first Euro rod was a cheap 3 wt. 10' 6", Chinese made rod I purchased for under $100 to see if I would like this type of fly fishing. It worked but definitely was not that great of a rod, hard to cast and wasn't sensitive enough. I've since purchased a much better rod from a company called Moonshine Rod Company. I purchased the 4 piece, Epiphany 3wt - 10'6". I love the the rod as it cast well is very sensitive and is a beautiful rod. They have a lifetime warranty and you get two tips with the purchase. I paid just under $300 for my rod and I have since bought another rod from them for my regular fly fishing, still water, etc. Keep up the great videos as I also tie flies and like a lot of your patterns you have shown.

I’ve been using my Redington strike pro 2, and I love it!!! It’s a 10 ft 3wt, and I have it paired with their TILT reel. With the rod costing 350, and the reel costing 250, it ran me 600 total
Yeah... that's an average setup cost most of the time.... Glad you're enjoying it!
I tend to wander far from the car, lots of bushwacking, etc. So I only want to carry one rod most of the time.
I use a 10 ft 3 wt Orvis Clearwater. I really like it. I would say it is not perhaps a "pure" Euro rod, super long and super light. But it is a super all purpose rod. It works very well as a Euro rod on the streams of modest size I tend to fish, but can easily cast a dry fly or even a small streamer. I have even landed a 3lb small mouth bass with the thing.
I keep a 3wt floating line rigged with a 3x tapered leader to a tippet ring on the reel. I simply tie a 30-40 ft piece of mono to that tapered leader and another tippet ring on the free end, then tippet, usually 5x. If I want to cast a streamer I just wind the mono onto a foam spool, and snip it off at the tippet ring. Now I am all set up to tie on a foot of tippet and streamer (or dry fly). To switch back, just snip off the streamer, tie on the mono rig, reel it onto the spool.
Today I planned on focusing on streamer fishing so took my 9 ft 5 wt. There was some water I thought might be better Euro nymphing. So I just tied on the mono rig and fished the rod I had. Caught a mess of rainbow trout. Worked pretty well for the small stream I was in.
So, if you are interested in giving Euro nymphing a try and don't want to shell out cash, and you have something like a typical 9 ft 5 wt, just tie on 30 ft of mono (could just be some heavy tippet you already have), some sighter, and have at it.

I've Euro Nymphed a 10ft 8wt for Steelhead just for the needed backbone to get a fish that powerful in, and I was still able to cast fairly small beadheads very accurately with a mono rig. I also did it once on a 11ft Steelhead float rod when the 8wt was in for repair and it worked like a charm. I mostly use a 10ft 2wt for trout fishing, but I'm convinced you can throw a mono rig on any rod with enough reach and you'll do alright. 'Feeling' your fly is useful some of the time, but a whole lot can be accomplished with good presentation and reading of the sighter. 'Euro Nymph fly line' is really only necessary if you're constraining yourself to competition rules, which is absolutely silly for anyone who isn't actually planning to fish in competitions. I had a 3wt dry fly line that I originally tied my mono rig to after trying a Euro Fly Line and being wildly disappointed when there was even a foot out of the reel. Turns my 2wt 10ft throws that 3wt line and a 15ft dry fly leader like a dream when the need or desire arises. The rest of the time I usually run more than enough straight 14lb mono to be able to launch streamers or indicator rigs across big pools.
I use a, 11' 7wt switch rod for steelhead and an 11' 8wt switch rod for salmon and basically euro nymph for them with a single fly. I have the same accuracy as I do with my 10'6" 3wt for trout!
Try throwing a 3wt or 4wt line on the 8wt for salmon and steelhead. Or use a running line. You can roll cast up to a 5mm bead. The fly line is light enough not to pull down through the guides. I do a 4” tapered leader with sighter to tippet ring. 20-14-12-8, the last 2 being hi vis. Your more versatile on the water and the thicker line is easier to control in the cold weather.

Because I'm looking to buy a 10' #6 stillhead rod for casting streamers for larger trout on my local stream but was also deeply interested in euro fishing. Since I never don't take more then one with me when going fishing, I was wondering if I could just switch leaders and convert that 10ft #6wt rod with the help of a SA Euro Nymph Kit (same thing as the Rio shorty kit) and continue to euro Nymph with that kit?
So, regular 10ft 6wt rod + Rio shorty kit. If I understood well, it's doable? 🙂
@@stellamillenium it is doable. But I have since moved to the Diamondback 10’10” 6wt which is made specifically to euro nymph for steelhead and what a difference!!! Way lighter, way more power, way more sensitivity and way more tippet protection! I HIGHLY recommend it. However, I have not tried to throw streamers with it.
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany oh, that's nice! But I'm more into buying one "universal" rod (ok, we all know such thing doesn't exist 🙂), but as close as it can be. I'm specifically looking for Vision still hero 9,9ft 6wt, hoping I could use it for big dries, indicator nymph fishing, some streamers and over the top, to easily convert it to a euro rig as needed. The rod itself weights 100grams. Not that heavy I guess..

After I watched the first couple of your euro nymphIng series I really decided to try it. Had an old fly reel with fair drag with backing and 4wt line and ordered the cheapest 4wt 10.5’ rod ($96.00). Splurged on leader/sighter material as recommended in your set-up series! Used 30 Ft of 65 lb braid line(already had) instead of euro line! Put it all together as my learning/assessment rig!
Purchased a $42 fly tying vice/tool kit and ordered the materials specified for your Sexy Stonefly bomb(~$45). After a few really ugly stonefly,
A few trips out, loosing lots of flys, began to catch fish! Love the technique and the video series has got me to the point that I’m ready to invest in the real and better equipment. I’m also tying all your flys and love them!

I have realized that I have been Euro nymphing for quite some time without realizing it!
On a New Zealand home braided water with a consistently high flow, (Up to 150 cumecs) I have been fishing with tenkara rods and fluoro lines. The rods are 13 and 15 ft in length and the fly in order to get to the desired depth are weighted with 4.4 or 5 mm tungsten beads aided with a Swann shot if deep and turbulent water dictates. My setup costs less than $100 NZ per rod and line and works just fine.
I have a 115 dollar max catch 10ft 6in. 3wt. I love it. I also have their 40 dollar reel…it’s a pain in the ass to use. The line slips through the line guards and ends up getting wrapped up on the outside of the reel, and gets jammed into spaces in the reel “structure” and gets stuck up…the rod through is amazing!
Yeah... a lot of people have the same problem with reels when using a mono rig. I'm having that problem a bit too and should probably look for a different reel specifically for it.
Here in Romania(eastern europe), we call it short nymphing, and we typically use 11 feet rod. If we need more distance, we use an ultra light nymphing line
If you're on an ultra low budget, Maxcatch makes a serviceable euro rod. I have one as a backup and it's actually fairly sensitive, just heavy.
I started with an echo shadow ii 10ft 3wt that's under $300 and I paired it with a orvis clearwater ii. It is perfectly balanced, no exaggeration right at the top of the cork. It was a perfect starter combo!

Wild Waters out of Rochester NY has a euro nymph rod I have used when I first started euro nymphing and I have stuck with it. They also offer lifetime warranty at a $65 price point. They only offer it in a 3 wt 10ft rod. Even friends of mine who have much much more expensive setups have tried this rod of mine and really like it. Also, customer service is amazing and they answer quickly and through text message or phone call.

A bit late to the party but i was able to get a nymphing rod for around 70$ from a polish company called mikado… the rod was a 10ft 4wt it was lightweight, sensitive and had an impressively strong butt section comparable to a 7wt… idk my standards might be low since i havent used any premium rods but hey its cheap, it does the job well and it catches fish
Going to try this for the first time next weekend. Great to tell me how to set up my 10’ TFO 4 wt to try the Euro Nymphing before buying the gear specific to this style of fly fishing. Will let you know how it goes in a couple of weeks.

That is the most fun part of euro nymphing for me. I love breaking down water and finding fish. That is what turns a good fisherman into a great fisherman! I was forced to learn it when steelhead fishing and was so proud of myself when I started to find fish that everyone else skipped over or missed! I do plan on more of that this year. I need to get out and fish and film. My personal life has been so busy I haven't fished in a month! That is terrible for someone who runs a UA-cam channel on fishing... I'm missing some of the best fishing of the year right now.

I bought an LL Bean euro rod and so far I like it a lot. What sold me is that i can return it in a year if i don't like it. This is my first year euro nymphing.

It's pretty funny to have these 2 big box lights aiming down on my little fly vice... but I can see so well with them 😂😂😂 I wish I had a picture to show you. Oh and I ended up getting a scale off Amazon that seems to work really well for weighing my flies!
the 5X magnification is great - my flies are so much more detailed, and I do realize how very little dubbing I am now using compared to before. Amazing.

As always you give us such a thorough review of what your topic is. I give you a ton of credit on how you research and explain what you recommend. And literally saving us subscribers a bunch of money. I just tried looking for a euro rod and I’m amazed at their prices. So, you’re not only helping us with this new method but trying to point us in the right direction as in a decent rod and line , etc. I have to agree with you on the reel. The reel on a fly rod isn’t always just there to hold fly line. As I’ve been told from day one when buying my first fly rod combo. Especially if you are maybe in a river where there are bigger than average trout like say 16-20”’s. They will wear you out trying to palm the reel. Let out line as they scream downstream. Even a rainbow in the 17 “ range will get that line ripping. A really smooth drag really matters. Great points as always Bryan! Keep up your educational videos , I’ve been flyfishing for a few years now and I love all your input and still learning as I go. There is not a leveling off where a fly fisherman knows it all. @@WhiteDogTrailCompany well. I lied. I know alittle about fly reels. Orvis ‘ bar stock Access sucks compared to my Lamson Velocity smooth drag comparison. I was so sold on G.Loomis Venture fly reels too until I bought a 7/8 Lamson Velocity. Big difference when fighting big steelheads. So, I agree totally in yes. , the reel does matter. And the rod also. You can cheap out in line but you’ll pay that price as well down the line. Literally. Love your content. Take care Bryan , and as always. , tightlines.

Another good rod is from The Wade Rod Company, The Nymphster, it has an extra section to make it 10 or 11 foot, plus they have a payment plan for those on a budget. Great video as always, besides the rod I have found that getting a good leader formula makes a big difference on the water.

The problem with a mono rig on many current fly reels is that they don't have a closed frame. Some manufacturers are catching on and producing them again, but the mono rig presents problems with the line escaping out the side of the reel through the gap between the frame and the spool.

I started with an echo carbon xl and loved it. Unfortunately it was stolen with the rest of my gear and I’m trying to replace it. I would buy another, but with even a little experience, I want to go longer. Finding a budget friendly 11’ is tricky.
Yeah... I recommend the Diamondback 10'10" rods. Great length, great sensitivity, great backbone and great tippet protection. They're a little more than the lower budget rods but worth every penny in my opinion. They're way less $ than other top end rods but perform better way better than the $1000 rods in my experience.
Been watching your vid's for about a year now and glad I found it; very informative and you make me miss my old home waters in CNY.

Nice tips. I wanted to give this a try so I got a cheap real and some euro line. This was phase 2 for me because I already had made a small investment in supplies to build some leaders. Not previously having a reel or fly line of any kind this was the most expensive part. I also think the guy at the fly shop got me something good, but was more than I wanted to spend on a line. Anyways, I do not have a proper rod. I actually put this setup on my steelhead rod for gear fishing because it is 9 ft 6 inches and had a good length even though it is a bit stiff for this. But I caught my first fish Euro style last night. It was a lot of fun. I think my next steps will be to get a proper rod when I can. Thanks for all the great tips.
Yeah... I would personally spend the money on the rod and not on a fly line. Rods make a big difference if you can afford them!

Ah man, I found it almost trait after I commented. Really good, but scary how subtle it all looks. Hoping this coming season in the UK I can give it a go and get some feels on it. Only pinch is I only have one rod and reel. A short 8ft #3. The streams I fish are super tight fishing, overhead trees etc. Often I am in a bush trying to cast to my intended spot. This rod is priced at around $289, but I recommend the Echo Shadow II. Besides the 10' rod, they sell a "competition" kit that can turn the rod into a 10'6" or 11" rod and it includes weights for the reel seat to help balance the rod and reel.

Excellent video, your reference to your earlier videos is very relevant. Just recently been on a trip to the Tongariro River in New Zealand and tried the euro nymphing out, not very successful though. I have had great success on this river with wet lining, so euro nymphing is going to be a challenge. I am using a Traper GST 3 weight 10 foot 6 rod, combined with the Traper GST reel. I think I will need to revisit your earlier videos in order to improve on my own skills. Thank you for a very informative series.

I have a dragonfly kamloops 4wt euro nymphing rod I bought as a starter it was around $200 and found it to be an exceptionally good starter rod very sensitive and really was able to take a beating worth the money

I have an Echo Carbon XL 10' 3WT Euro Rod. I've fished with it for 3 years now and have no reason to upgrade. Great rod at a really good price point. I have it paired with the Echo Ion 4/5 reel. Reel balances nice and has good drag, however the line slips through constantly with a mono rig but i'm sure that is a problem with most reels and mono rigs that aren't fully enclosed.
Yeah... I have the same problem on my older Sage 3250 reel. Now that I'm using a much longer section of 12# Maxima for my main line of my leader I have the same problem. I might need to change up my reel because of that. It hasn't lost me a fish yet but man it can be frustrating.

I have the Redington Strike 10'6" 3wt which is their euro nymphing rod. I am very happy with it so far.
I believe the Strike is the Redington Hydrogen replacement (which is my backup rod). It was definitely good for the money. I've held the strike and it felt similar to my Hydrogen. And I think 10'6" 3wt is a great length and weight!
I pieced it out for a cheap euro set last year, now I have my second kid and still haven’t had a chance to use it lol awesome videos, any videos on the basics are great
Congrats on your kids! I know the feeling! My kids are older now (16 and 14) but I still struggle to get out because they're so busy with all of their activities. The time on the water will come but that means my kids will be gone and we'll be lonely without them! I take advantage of any time I get but at the same time I'm enjoying having my kids around too! It's all a balance.. 🙂

I got over to the Hoosick over this past weekend. The water was blue,clear and low, looked like the Caribean! I was able to put some euro nymphing to the test and caught a decent rainbow!

Pro tip for anybody looking to get tippet cheaper: Seaguar yellow label 4Lb flouro is exactly the same diameter as 5x for a whole lot cheaper per ft of line.
The series is EXCELLENT so far. What I would like to see is if I don't have the cash to buy a euro nymph rod, how would you suggest I use my 8'6 or 9' rod to euro nymph? What types of gear/fly lines will I need to achieve this? I just don't have the scratch right now to afford anything more than say a fly line and leader, but I've got tons of flies that should serve the purpose.
Yeah... I think a lot of people are in similar situations. The technique is the same as I describe in my series but you'll be limited on range. Maybe focus on smaller waters with more defined runs that you can target. I would forget the fly line altogether and just go with the mono rig like I describe in this video.
Great video, info is spot on. The catch and the hatch web site offers euro nymphs on sale for great rates several times per year but you get a lot of emails from them wanting you to buy other of their products, tried the cabelas czn tip broke about 3 hrs in to first day. They gave my money back at the store I purchased it from, offered another rod but the other one kinda left a bad feeling about them, review’s were good just a freak deal. Keep up your good work it is most appreciated!!!
Thanks for the suggestion on flies and the rod! My brother had the original Cortland Competition rod and broke the tip on his first trip. They sent him a new section and he was back in action pretty quickly.

I'm sure you know that the lower priced rods from US companies are made overseas. There are several Chinese companies that sell adequate rods for half the price you quoted.

Instead of using mono, would braided line be better? Less stretch and apparently more sensitive to feeling bites. Probably cast better too.
I have not done it but there are people who use braided line.

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Syndicate P2 rods are fantastic euro rods. And you're right, they were early in the game and focused exclusively on euro rods. If you give them a call, they will share the reel weights they recommend to perfectly balance specific models of their rods. At their price point, you'd be hard pressed to find a better rod.

Great video on euro nymphing on a budget! I picked up a Shadow II used, with an extension kit. Maybe you could explore using a heavy braid instead of mono or a dedicated euro fly line? I use a braid line I think it's 65 lb test. You can get a spool in many colors and inexpensive like on Ebay. It's light, supple, sensitive, and no memory. Thanks for all your videos! I have had the czn for about 7 years and it’s been a good rod it’s a little heavy but I also have the 4# 11ft hoping to upgrade soon tight lines
Cool... I think most lower end rods (especially in the 11' length) are going to feel a little heavier. My Redington feel significantly heavier than the ESN. And I've felt other rods like the Sage Sense, Cortland Competition and they feel a little heavier like that.
I've gone with just bi-color sighter material for my leader. Saves some coin as there's less stuff to buy. Super simple.
I have some bi-color but have yet to really use it. I may try it in one of my leaders soon though to see how I like it.

When I started I was losing flies. Now I can go TRIPS without losing them though I tie my own and it's not a biggie. You almost ALWAYS Fish upstream so when you do hang bottom, work your way up stream until it comes free. The times it won't come loose are almost always hooked into vegetation such as branches or roots. My wading staff extends to 14 feet and has saved me MANY break offs and flies. I screw a round piece of felt in the end to retrieve lures from trees that unluckily fishermen have lost. I will NOT go wading without it.
First of all... LOVE your idea with your wading staff!!! I find I can get my flies out almost all of the time. The times where I struggle to free flies is in higher water and bigger pocket water conditions when I'm using heavier flies to plunge through the fast water to get down to the slow water. If there are big rocks all over the bottom they can really get hung up and not let go... That's when I lose a lot of my flies. But I always try the upstream method to free flies!
I just bought a 10’6” Redington Strike from adventuron for $155. 55%off. Pretty good deal. I haven’t use it yet but it should be much better than the9’ 4 weight that I’ve been using.
That's a great rod for most anglers. I've held one for a bit although I didn't use it on a stream.

Flies are a concern. Can I add a tungsten bead on the tippet to get down without spending a bunch of money tying new flies.
I think the most important thing is to learn how a good drift should feel. You might consider the drop shot method of adding weight below the flies as well. that way if something gets hung up it'll be the bottom weight and not your fly! I know the heartache of losing flies I've tied lol. Once you start to feel confident about how the drift should feel you can experiment with different weight flies and just use the flies as your weight.

Ah.... that's a good one that I have not covered in full. I appreciate that suggestion and I will try to work that in! For me it breaks down to 3 knots.
- Clinch Knot - (connection to fly or connection to tippet ring)
- Double Uni Knot (Uni-Uni) - Connecting leader sections together
- Triple Surgeon's Knot - Creating dropper tags
Get 2 waterproof markerpens, mark you leader in the style u like. Costs like 5 dollars. (asuming u already have some rod and lines to use)

Nice informative video for people starting Euro Nymphing. I started 1 month ago and using my current 5 wt, 9 ft Sage rod on medium sized rivers. Steep learning curve so you video series has helped. If I’m going to Euro Nymph on same rivers, what Weight Euro Nymph rod I should consider? Not clear on weight translation from conventional to Euro Nymphing Rod? Thanks.
If you're going to get a Euro Nymphing rod I would recommend a 3wt. I would also recommend a 10' 6" rod as they're more universal and you can reach further than just a 10' rod. The 3wt is only the weight of the tip of the rod so there should still be plenty of backbone in a 3wt but read reviews and look around at what people say about the rods. A medium action rod is ideal for euro nymphing... soft tip that bends down to the middle of the rod and then a stiff butt section. Good luck with your euro nymphing!!!

The mono we typically use (Maxima Chameleon) is low memory and fairly stiff mono. You may not have the same experience with other mono.

There are very few euro rods out there specifically made for steelhead... however there are a few. Joe Goodspeed made one for T&T for a while and now he is at Diamondback and put a lot of effort into the design of the Diamondback Ideal Nymph 10'10" 6wt that he made specifically for steelhead. I just got mine this winter and although I haven't steelhead fished with it yet.. I certainly will be. There will 100% be a "How to Euro Nymph for Steelhead" video coming this year! I'm working with Diamondback on it and we'll be giving away a rod on the channel when we hit 25000 subscribers. I'm very excited for that. But first I need to get out on the water get some steelhead action with it!
How about a video on hybrid methods between indicator nymphing and euro nymphing? Euro nymphing with an indicator or indicator nymphing with colored sighter on your leader or any combination of those techniques all have distinct uses and advantages

Great video as always. Might be a little tough since you aren't a fly shop owner, but, I'd love to possibly see a video on those next-step euro rods that might be a little more pricey. I'm in the market for an upgrade in a big way and I'm sure people who start euro-nymphing from this series will be in the same boat soon too once they're hooked.
I was in the interesting position of having the Sage ESN be my first Euro Rod. That thing is an absolute dream!!! I absolutely love it. I do want to fish with a bunch of other rods but I don't have access to them. I know the guys at the Fly Shack though so maybe there is an opportunity to partner with them on something for middle to higher end rods!
You have to get a better rod, its the only way to enjoy it more. Plus you will look like an elite professional. I want to see your face when the rod snaps.
If you were to recommend 4 or 5 flies for a beginning euro-nymph fisherman, what would they be? I've set up a Mono rig with 20# Maxima Chameleon, 4 red/yellow Amnesia sighter, tippet ring, and then my 2 fly tippet. Now I need to select my flies to tie. I have a 10', 4w rod. I would say use what you have available to you. It won't perform like a euro specific rod but that 9'6" 4wt is going to be a good all around rod for a lot of techniques! I like that it is a little longer than your typical fly rod so that will help with the reach you need when euro nymphing. if you find you like nymphing, then maybe you look to get a euro specific rod down the road! I’m now using my first euro nymphing rod it’s a courtland 10 ft 6” I’m pretty pleased but I don’t how a lot to compare to. My son uses the orvis Clearwater 10ft and catches a ton of fish. I’ll interested in other peoples thoughts on the Courtland
Which Cortland is it? Is their new MKII or the original Cortland Competition? I have a guide who has both the Sage ESN ($995 rod) and the Cortland MKII and he prefers the Cortland over the ESN! I have another buddy who has the new Cortland as well and he loves his too!

As for the fly line, do you think reversing a weight forward floating fly line by tying it to the backing line would give you a relatively thinner level line to work with?
Sure but it's still gonna sag. Just use like 20-30yds of mono or one of those euro leader kits that attach to your floating line
Good way to not lose fly is, use a drop shot rig to start off instead of a point fly and a tag fly. Crimp a split shot as the point and use a tag fly. That seems to work really well until you get a good feel for the bottom. Way less snagging and you lose way less flies. Plus you don't need to have a euro nymph. You could use regular nymph since the split shot will bring your fly down. So may options you could explore as long as you understand the concept.
