  • Changing Fuel Filler Neck on 2004 Toyota Corolla.
    Vehicle was getting evaporative (EVAP) emissions codes DTC MIL P0441, P0442, P0446
    EDIT: 4/28/2019
    After having it successfully clear the codes and run all the monitors, now the car is back to a P0441 and P0442 error codes. I'll have to figure out what is happening.
    EDIT: 8/23/2019 This does seem to have fixed the problem. Initially, I had some error codes again after the repair. but it seems to be working now.

    Good job. Thank you for the video. I have something obstructing fuel when I fill my car and it takes forever filling because the gas station's pump keeps shutting off. This is just what I needed.

    Nice video John. My wife's 2003 corolla has been presenting this code for a few years now. I clear it and it'll come back 6 to 12 months later. Because of the age and mileage of the car I think my best bet will be just to keep clearing it so that if the engine light does appear for something substantial I'll find it. My permanent fix will be buying a new Toyota at some point.

    my 98 corolla started throwing the same codes. i've replace cap. clear code w scanner. 3 days later check eng lite comes back. tested vsv. heard it click , so think that's working. kinda rusty under there, so i just suspect its my filler neck, like yours. thanks for vid. of course, would like a smoke test but , ugh, dont wanna pay 100$ of that.
    oh, also, i suspect filler neck cuz when i was filling it the 1st time.{ just bought car} the station pump kept shutting off like it was full and i knew there was no way it could have been . never had a car do that, but ive never had a po446 code either, so i think their related.

      That sounds like the fuel tank vapor check valve.those are notorious to have leaks and also go bad if you top off when filling gas.if you have a habit of over filling your tank it can ruin it.

    Hello sir whats the name of the hose that has the plastic shield on

    • @johnbriggs7514
      @johnbriggs7514  3 місяці тому

      The fuel filler neck consists of the large diameter tube for getting gasoline down to the tank, and two separate vent lines that are covered by the plastic panel.

  • @datguyched5335
    @datguyched5335 4 роки тому +4

    So you didnt have to drop the fuel tank to detach the old or install the new filler neck?

    • @johnbriggs7514
      @johnbriggs7514  4 роки тому +6

      No. I didn't have to drop the fuel tank or drain the tank. I did spill a little bit of fuel when I took off the lower hose.
      I deliberately jacked up that side of the car and left the other side low to try to keep the fuel from spilling from the tank.
      Perhaps it would be smart to drain the tank, or at least not working on a full tank.
      I did keep a fire extinguisher near by as there was a lot of fuel vapor.
      Of course, if you are a smoker, don't do that near the tank.

    Thanks for putting together this video. It takes time. So I have been having one of the evap codes and I have replaced the gas cap a few times. Last night I pressured the vent system, the fuel tank and canister. I had to plug a couple lines etc. And the canister. To my dismay when I was spraying some sort of water bubble solution to find leak I found the back of the fuel tank on top where a large vent or vacuum line that goes to the canister was bubbling big time. Just letting you know what I found. I just have to figure out how to fix the fuel tank or replace. Cheers.

    Excellent very detailed instructions. You explain it in and understanding way.
    question. When you remove the fill hose pipe from the gas tank, what stops the gas from pouring out from the gas tank?
    Thank you if anyone could answer this, would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for the video. I have a 2002 Corolla and the error code P0440 came on. I could smell gas vapors, but I could not get the car into the shop for a couple of months. I did and they got the check engine light off, but I still smelled gas when I pulled out. My car was on empty. I filled it up and quickly found gasoline dripping out just in from the left back tire. When I parked on flat ground it stopped leaking.
    I took it back in and they want to charge $1,000 for repairs. They say they ordered a kit which includes these parts - : Fuel
    ring, cap assy, shield fuel, hose for upper neck, lower fill hose, Rigid pipe filler, fuel hose. - for $418.
    And labor at $450 as they say they have to empty and remove the gas tank.
    Does this sound reasonable?

    • @johnbriggs7514
      @johnbriggs7514  2 роки тому +1

      Seems a bit high. I don't know why they would need to remove the gas tank. I certainly didn't do that.

    Did the error code end up clearing up? Also, how did you empty the gas tank? Was it just driving until it was basically empty? I’m getting ready to do this in a few weeks as I got the error code today and started researching. Thanks so much for this!!!!

    • @johnbriggs7514
      @johnbriggs7514  3 роки тому +2

      Sadly, I still do occasionally get the error code, but it is much less frequent. There is no doubt that my fuel filler next was "a" problem, but it might not be the only problem.
      I did not empty the gas tank. The tank was not full and the back end of the car was jacked up. A little gasoline spilled out when I disconnected the lower hose, but not much.
      Good luck with your repair.

    Similar issue on my 2003 Sequioa. Toyota's are NOTORIOUS for their rubber lines to crack and cause issues on EVAP and vaccuum connections. I replaced every single one under the hood, many were very cracked at the ends and you couldnt see them unless you removed the hose. I replaced the vsv valve at the Evap Charcoal canister, it went away for about a week and then came back. I will be doing the soapy water test next.
    These codes passed Texas Emmissions tests last year, same exact code (446), but this year it failed. Was told Texas has changed their requirements to be closer to Cali standards. Great......

      John Anthony. If I cleared the codes with the ODB2 port, they would come back after a while. The evaporation test needs a number of conditions before it is run by the car computer. I could go a week without the test being run.
      After the repair, the codes have permanently gone away.

    I would appreciate if anyone could answer this. When you remove that hose pipe from the gas tank, what stops the gas from spilling out?
    I do not know the anatomy of that. Is there a risk of the gas pouring out when you remove that hose pipe from the gas tank for replacement of the hose pipe?

    • @johnbriggs7514
      @johnbriggs7514  Рік тому

      Notice that the car is jacked up only on the driver's side. This move the gasoline away from the filler neck and I had only minimal gasoline spill out. Also the gas tank was not full.
      FWIW. Recently I also had to have the gas tank changed out because there was rust on it as well.

    • @johnbriggs7514
      @johnbriggs7514  5 років тому

      Their databases say it is most likely the charcoal canister, but that is only because it is the thing most often replaced, not the right thing. It is a flawed system.
      I replaced the canister, which did seem to have at least one issue, but it didn't clear the problem.
