- Howdy! I'm Daniel, with Roslyn Rags. In this tutorial I demonstrate how to fold and dye and hooded sweatshirt. The shirt has been soaked in a soda ash solution of 1 cup Sodium Carbonate to 1 Gallon Water. The fabric is slightly damp when I fold. I turned the shirt inside out and folded up the drawstrings individually. I use a fork and start twisting where I want the spiral to be centered. I use #19 rubber bands and #16 when I bind up sweatshirts. Larger rubber bands are easier for larger pieces. I use Procion Mx Fiber Reactive dye to set the color onto the shirt. It is then placed in a bag for 24 hours before being washed out.

Procion Mx Fiber Reactive dye. About 4 tsp per 8oz water. give or take for different colors.

Is there a way to make the colors of dye lighter almost like a pastel
+Broadwaykid you can dilute the dye 2:1 or 4:1 or more. don't have as high of a pH on your soda ash solution. Wash them out within a couple hours. I am sure there are even more options out there. Play around an see what you get.

What brand hoodie do you use and what material?
"Hanes Ultimate cotton" is what a normally use. It is a 90/10 cotton/ poly sweatshirt. I will also use 80/20 cotton/poly if I have it.

+Jaila Hamilton I use enough rubber bands that I feel the folds are secure. I like to try and keep it to one band when I fold bandannas.

Why do you turn it inside out?
+maxymetalman I notice a more even dye when it is inside out. Also in the washout, if two shirts sit on each other, you are only getting the other shirts dye on the inside...
