    Brilliant idea to show the process in reverse. Thanks for the verbal instructions and not having annoying music in the background like some so many of these how to videos.

      is the shirt wet before you start? and also is the sodium mix necessary?

    • @atsukosan_artwork
      @atsukosan_artwork 3 роки тому

      @@lindapecaj4570 Yes you need to let your shirt soaked in soda ash for at least 20 minutes or so, in my personal experience I let the shirt in soda ash for about a day after that I squeeze the excess of water from the shirt but it is still wet, so you start making your spiral or your pleats, use the rubber bands but stretch them enough to get a rounded spiral so that way you will get more dye into your shirt, If you don't stretch the rubber bands the tension will make your spiral like a ball so it will be harder to get more dye into the pleats, I mean it depends on the result you want to get, in my case I rather very saturated dyes so I make my spirals rounded and extended. after you dye your shirt let it seat in a plastic bag for about three days, that's what I do, but you can just wait 24 hours, that's enough, you take it out from the bag, you rinse it with clean water until the water comes clean and you let it dry! That's it.
      Add me on Instagram I'm starting on this too! but I love it: @atsuko_san19
      you can add me on skype too so we can share tips and results! dan.atsuko

    Thanks, mtickleberry! Actually you start by soaking your shirt in a solution of soda ash. You then apply the dye. You then "batch" the shirt. "Batching" is what it is called when you wrap the fabric in plastic (to keep it wet longer) and leave it in a warm place for up to 24 hours. This allows the dye some time to react with the fiber, which is how you achieve brilliant colors. If you check out the other vidoes in this series (there are six), you can see the whole process.

    Yes! All of Jacquard's Tie Dye Kits come with soda ash. We include everything you need to begin tie dyeing (except, of course, for T-shirts)!

    We use Jacquard Procion MX dyes. The colors are: Lemon Yellow, Turquoise, and Magenta. These are also the colors that come in the Jacquard Tie Dye Kit. These three colors can be mixed to also make green, orange and purple.

    The dye is mixed with warm tap water. After it has rested for at least 12 hours remove the rubber bands and rinse until the water runs clear.

  • @jacquardproducts
    @jacquardproducts  11 років тому +9

    The dye is Procion MX. It is a fiber reactive dye that is fixed with soda ash. Where most dyes require very hot temperatures, the Procion can be used with warm tap water.

    I've been using your products to dye my shirts (I use them for my work uniforms) for 20 years now. It's hard sometimes to get a real guage of the exact shade and vibrancy of a color with those little color samples on your website, I hope someday you might consider a youtube video that shows all the colors seperately on actual white fabric. So we get a "real life" feel for how a particular color will turn out. I know that for me, the "cobalt blue" I expected to be a deep, intense jewel tone blue, and it's considerably "muddier" looking than I expected. I found I liked turqoise better. Same with Marine Violet. I think next time I will try the Lilac.

    After you have dyed the shirt and allowed it to set for 12 hours, you must rinse it in cool water and then put it through the washing machine. Use Synthrapol to help reduce the risk of back staining.

      Caustic soda and hydrosulphate are the main ingredients for tie and dye.without these ingredients the colours will fade away,am talking from a Nigerian perspective.

      Hobby lobby has soda ash you soak your dry shirts in it for couple hours are after 24 hours and it keeps the colors from fading so so good and so - rang it out wrap it up to whatever shape you want it to be and then start putting color on it

    • @jacquardproducts
      @jacquardproducts  9 років тому +10

      Katie Orr it is damp. We always pre-soak the fabric in a solution of soda ash and then wring it out before dyeing. The soda ash makes the colors bright and permanent, and it is easier to tie and bind a damp shirt.

    the shirt is dry before you apply dye?
    how to make it without white spots?

    • @jacquardproducts
      @jacquardproducts  10 років тому +7

      The shirt is damp before dyeing--it should be soaked in a solution of soda ash. But the drier it is, the less white areas you will likely have. Also, using warm or hot water in your dyes will reduce white space.

    Wet shirts are easier to handle while tying. However, you can soak in soda ash and then allow the shirt to dry before dyeing. This will result in less white areas in the design, as the dyes will spread more.

  • @jacquardproducts
    @jacquardproducts  11 років тому +1

    Yes, that's correct. You want it to be damp so the colors will blend smoothly.

  • @jacquardproducts
    @jacquardproducts  11 років тому

    The shirt only needs to be in the soda ash solution long enough to become fully saturated. About 15 minutes is fine, but you can leave it in as long as you want to. After applying the dyes you'll want to let it "batch" (stay wet and warm) for up to 12 hours. This will allow you to achieve bright, bold, vivid colors.

    How long do you soak the fabric in the soda ash?
    Should the shirt be dry when you apply the dye?
    Should the water be warm?
    I have had bad luck with tie dying in the past - all recommendations help!!

    • @LyndaHeines
      @LyndaHeines 8 років тому

      +Anna Haber Old question but thought I'd answer it. I soak my fabric in the soda ash water for 30 minutes but can go longer. You can let the shirt drip dry and then fold, but I find it much easier to go ahead and tie it and apply the dye when it's wet. To make the soda ash solution the water needs to be warm to dissolve. The dye water doesn't need to be warm. You need to let it set for 24 hours before rinsing and washing.

    One question, if you could answer it: When you flip the shirt over, and you say to use the same colour where you used it on the front; what would happen if you used a different colour? Say blue on the front and red on the back? What would it make the shirt look like in the end o.O ?
    Thanks if you can reply to this!

    The dye we use in the Jacquard Tie Dye kits is what is known as a "cold water fiber reactive dye." It comes as a powder in the squirt bottles; you simply add water and shake until disolved. We also sell the dyes open stock in about 45 differnt colors, if you are looking for a particular color or for greater volume.

    As long as the color of the shirt isn't too dark. The begining color must be lighter than the dye color, as dyes are always transparent. Yellow dye wouldn't show up on a black shirt at all, for instance... But most lighter colored shirts will work great.

    hey, im from mexico and my problem here is that i dont have where to buy a dye kit, as i don´t think they are sold in my area!!! so here the only products i can get are those traditional dyes wich you solve in hot water and then place your shirts inside. Do you think that if i solve the dye in water and after let it dry, would achieve the same rsults as your dye kit?

    If you want the colors to flow and mix together wet is best. It just depends on what look you want.

    As many as you want but remember they will flow into each other making new colors. For instance red and yellow make orange, etc.

    Good, should the flannels be wet or can they be made when they are dry?. I commented that they must be wet with sodium carbonate

      As long as it is is made from natural fibers (cotton, silk, etc.) and is not treated with anything (such as water repellent, sizing, etc.), you'll be able to dye it!

    HI what is soda ash? im in the Uk and ive not heard of it. Also is the shirt dry, wet or damp when you dye it? thankyou v much

    • @jacquardproducts

      Soda ash is very important for tied dyeing. It is like baking soda but stronger. The shirt is damp when dyeing.
