Great closet. Can you use a different type of wood for a natural look? Also I'd like to put LEDs on each shelf for the shoes instead of just the top one. Looks amazing!
I love this! I didn't see how you secured the boxes to the base, each other and the walls. Also, do you have a more detailed video of how you made the drawers and the dowel holes for the adjustable shelves?
Yes I do! Here is a more detailed video ua-cam.com/video/0BfkL_syVO8/v-deo.html box drawer video ua-cam.com/video/M2UfSxgZuYs/v-deo.html and drawer slide video.ua-cam.com/video/GghIQwrXuig/v-deo.html...the boxes were nailed together and to the base floor and then patched with wood-putty.

She is great or anyone one her team. you can use their chat feature on their website. Oh and they don't pay me or give me any discounts. I just simply love their product.
Amazing video! Going to get my husband to work soon on this I hope!! Could you use MDF instead of plywood? or what is the reason you preferred plywood?
Plywood is lighter and I think for stable and won’t tend to bed over time. MDF is good but for long stretches if you put weight on it over time the fibers break down.
would like to see this with the led's on for the full efffect of how they light the closet. Since you have them on remote. I guess you turn them on when entering the closet
Was there a reason you chose to use 1/2" pine plywood for the master closet instead of the 3/4" birch plywood that you used on the guest closet? Was it just to save on the budget, or did you find the 3/4" to be overkill before?
Several reasons, the first was weight, I wanted to keep it down and believe 3/4in was a bit over kill. second, cost I wanted to save money. Third, i wanted as much space for my cloths. It may not seem like much but 1/4inches add up.
This is the best! You make it seem so manageable and have simple steps... Thank you! Would love to see a video on how you make drawers! I prefer those over shelves personally!
Great video! I bought your plans. I am going to try my best to build this for my mom before she comes home from visiting my grandma. It's going to be a huge surprise for her. I truly hope I can do this in time. I have 8 days. So far I've emptied the room and painted it. Next step is to do my design and blueprints, and make a large home depot purchase. The back wall is a slanted ceiling so i'm gonna do counter height drawers. The two parallel walls are gonna be taller cabinets. One will be for shoes and the other with a clothing rod for dresses. Thank you so much for having such detailed plans for such a great price. I appreciate it so much. I started woodworking last year and one of my first projects was an armoire for my room and it's not perfect, but it's structurally strong enough for me to do chin ups on the rods haha (i used 4x4 with a gas pipe and metal flanges. then used plywood to box it up) and it does exactly what I need it to do which is to hold a lot of weight without collapsing. But for this specific project I want it to be aesthetically pleasing and as perfect as i can get it. I absolutely love how beautiful your closet turned out. I'm going to try to replicate it to the best of my ability. Do you have any advice on how to make my boxes perfectly straight? Using a leveler? Do those large clamps also help ensure straightness? Also, should I get my plywood custom cut from home depot? or should i do it at home? I have a circular saw. Oh and i'm also filming this build for my channel. I will be sure to mention you!! :)
Glad to help. I would have Home Depot cut it for you. Will make things a lot easier. Keeping the boxes square is the hardest thing to do. I recommend using clamps and a brad nailer it will help. You will do fine. Look forward to watching the video!
@@HowYouCanMakeIt Thanks for the advice! I will try to keep it straight with the glue as i use the nail gun. When I let the glue dry after I do my pocket holes, do i leave the clamps on for 24 hours as well? I have 7 boxes. Also, in your plans I see that you use 1/2 inch plywood for the boxes and you mentioned 1/4 plywood for the back panel. At which point do we use the MDF? In your plans you said to leave 1/2 inch between boxes and you mentioned using wooden shims as needed. Are those wooden shims in between the wardrobe boxes? What measurement do those need to be? I see you cut your baseboard to 2 3/4". Did you cut your face frames width as well or did the you space your cabinets to meet the width of the face frame? Lastly, If i want doors on my 2 taller cabinets, at what point would i install them? I don't know how I'd install the cabinet hinges with the face frames. I'm planning on doing a 2-door cabinet for the shoes and for the clothing rod cabinet. This master closet is actually gonna be in an upstairs hallway (129" x 98"), so doors on these cabinets are essential. I apologize for so many questions, I've never done a build this big and I want my mom to absolutely love her surprise master closet. Just trying my best.
You don't need to leave the clamps on for 24hrs as long as you are not moving them. You just need the clamps on long enough for the glue to start to bond a a few hrs is enough. The MDF is for the bottom of the drawer boxes. I think I have the drawer box video link in the video or in the description somewhere. I spaced my cabinets to equal 1.5in that way I could use a standard 1x2 for the faceframe because the actual size is 1.5in. leaving a .5in gap between the boxes allowed me to make adjustments as needed and I had a channel to run my wiring for the LED lights. I did have a bit overhang on my faceframe when I moved the boxes but I just sanded or applied wood putty to make the transition from the faceframe to the box cleaner. Installing doors with a faceframe. I would reccomend creating inset doors. Here is a helpful link to know what and how to install the hinges www.rockler.com/learn/choosing-the-right-hinge-for-your-project I would recommend going with Inset Cabinet: Inset door on frameless cabinets fit within the cabinet opening and sit flush with the front edges of the cabinet. Happy to help ask away :) really looking forward to seeing the final build!
Thanks for the feedback. It is a hard balance between providing enough vs too much I formation. To little doesn’t help too much people loose interest. I am working on a separate video to address all the details that have been requested. Anything specific you want to know
1/8 or 1/4 usually is in reference to how thick your wood is. I use 3/4in and or 1/2 for shelving. If you have a larger or wider space I recommend using 3/4in
to be precise, $1000 of materials, and a couple more thousands of dollars worth of equipment. great video, but after watching this, i think i'm just gonna go ahead and pay someone to build my dream closet or buy from ikea.
What is the reason for going with a depth of 18" for the closet? I've read some stuff that says the depth should be 24". Do you have to adjust where you place the bar if you do that?
Yes, the depth of an ENCLOSED closet should be 24". Actually 20-22" works for some too. Hang your winter coat on a hangar then measure the width of it. That's why. These are cabinet boxes that just HAPPEN to have clothes rods in them. They are not closets. They are just IN a closet. There is no wall in front of the clothes (which would need to be 24" or so from the wall BEHIND the clothes.) The boxes aren't the closet. They are only a place to give you bulkheads on which to mount your rods (and have shelves, etc.) and those bulkheads only need to be deep enough to be able to mount your rod at least 12-13" away from the back wall.
Yeah it was a lot of work but I honestly spent more time designing and research hung than building. If you could work 8hrs a day for about 5 days you could finish it in a week

Great video! I couldn't find where you may have explained how you made the holes for the pins that hold the shelves. Any advice in that regard? Thank you.
I created this as a follow-up video for the closet to answer additional questions. I hope it answers more of the light and cable questions for you. ua-cam.com/video/0BfkL_syVO8/v-deo.html
Sorry if this is duplicate but it didn’t appear that my comment posted. My question is can you see the reflection of the strip lights in the mirror above your drawers? We are doing the same so I’m considering a puck light instead in that area if it is really noticeable.
I have a separate drawer video that I made going into more details on how to make the drawer box. I am also working on an updated drawer box video that will be coming out soon so be sure to sub if your interested in seeing it.
I you could do it all with a track saw and a few guides it would be much cheeper • GRS-16 PE Parallel Edge Guide Rail Square | bit.ly/3KFK5Es • TPG Parallel Guide System | bit.ly/40Ntvbo
This is such a great build! I did freak out a bit around 6:47 though. When using any nailer I would recommend keeping your fingers at least 1.5x the length of the nail away from the tip of the nailer. And with plywood you never know what is on the inner layers; there could be a knot in just the wrong spot. Anyway, great video!
I'd do a separate video on how to use a chop saw and focus this video more on the specifics of building the closet. a lot of time spent on basic carpentry skills - hopefully those looking to take on this project would have those skills honed already
You make cutting the board with two passes look so easy! I'm always off a hair and it drives me crazy. I have a 12 in miter but will be getting a sliding one soon so that should help with a lot of my cuts. I'm about to build my entire master closet and got lots of tips from your video! Thank you!!
Did you just put down more carpet tack strips and replace the carpet? How did you stretch the carpet when you were putting it back down? Will the glue on painted parts hold ok long term?
@@HowYouCanMakeIt Sorry I re-read the way I wrote my question is a little confusing. At 6:41 when you are assembling, you apply glue to the edge of the plywood and then attach it a piece of painted plywood. Will that hold up long term?
Finally, someone that paints in a way that makes sense. It makes me crazy watching builders paint after assembly, when all they would have had to do were some minor touch ups..
I have a video on how to make the box drawer. Here is the video - ua-cam.com/video/M2UfSxgZuYs/v-deo.html I am working on a video that will show you how to make the face plate of the drawer. stay tuned :)
This is beautiful work!! I loved the LED lights feature you added. Really makes them pop. I’m having my closets done in a few weeks. Fortunately I have a friend that’s doing it for me 😃
I've watched loads of these "to do yourself" clips. It'll be great if someone could do one for hopeful people, like myself with basic tools...impossible I know but worth a try lol
Most all my projects on my channel can be made with just a table saw and miter saw. If you have any questions about projects you are working on feel free to let me know in the comments and I will do what I can to help you on your woodworking DIY maker journey.
@@HowYouCanMakeIt naw thank you. I've only just discovered you, so I haven't had a chance to look at your other clips. I'll subscribe and check them out!! Thanks again!
I made the drawer fronts. I am going to be making a new video showing how I make just the front. The closet took about 40hrs to make. I have a new video coming out in the next week or two going over the closet in some more detail
I don’t understand why a lot of theses videos don’t explain the importance of having the tools that’s required for this. Tool price it’s self is around 3k to 3.2k it self.
40 Sheets of Plywood will cost nearly $2000 by themselves. If you meant 20 Sheets cut in Half then Yes that would be $1000 BUT then you have to add all of the additional STUFF needed like Paint, Glue, Screws, Hardware, etc so even then you are well over $1000. Not sure where you come up with a budget of $1000.
Phillip great closet. I had my closet built out by closetmaid years ago and I've been wanting to do this professionally ever since. I consider myself a handylady. Lol. Do you have any suggestions to get started? Also, any chance I can buy the wood, prepainted and with multiple predrilled kreg jig holes for around the same $1000.00 price? It would be nice to be able to order if possible to minimize some of the work. I would like to use this similar template (cookie cutter) for different jobs. If you live in Atlanta I can buy the wood from you. Haha. Thanks Tamara
You can totally do it my blueprints show you everything you need. The painting wasn’t hard and if you don’t want to spend money on the large paint bucket and roller you could do it with a smaller one just take longer. I am not aware of any material that comes pre drilled with pocket holes. However making pocket holes is really easy. The blueprint comes with a 3D SkatchUp model so you can modify it to fit your space
T Doc, if you are averse to painting, you might want to try using melamine. It comes in several different colors, but white is abundantly available. A common melamine panel is 3/4 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. and cost about the same as the cheaper grades of plywood, and unlike cheap plywood, you can use either face of a sheet of melamine. However, I will offer these words of caution when attaching two pieces of melamine together: ensure all of your fasteners (i.e., pocket holes) join the two pieces of melamine through the face on either side. Pocket holes should be drilled through the face and should attach to the face on the joining piece. Do not attempt to join the uncoated melamine edges with pocket hole screws. The compressed wood that makes up the internal core of the melamine sheet will separate under a small amount of pressure if you attempt to drive a screw through the edge. Melamine is a solid product and has a multitude of uses when constructed correctly. I used 18 sheets melamine @ $29 per sheet to build my wife's master bedroom closet--installed crown molding yesterday, working on face frames and footboards today and tomorrow, then I'm done. I'm usually a weekend DIYer, and it's taken me several weeks to complete a big project. So don't be discouraged if it takes a while to complete your woodworking projects, just keep chipping away at it. And I agree with you, Phillip did a great job on his closet build. Good luck making sawdust, and remember to wear an appropriate mask/respirator!
The easiest way to achieve this is to use the Ikea Pax design tool then order the items. I did similar for my daughter. Everything fits perfectly and it goes together quickly. They last years too.

Please let me know if this is possible !
Great build. Can you tell me why use 1/2 inch instead of 3/4 inch ply? 1/2 seems to be less stable in my opinion. Are there any cons ro using 3/4 inch?
Did you make the shaker style drawers for this closet or buy them? I saw your drawer video on making a simple drawer and it’s not a shaker drawer. I bought a house and it already has a nice closet but there are no drawers in the closet. I found that the closet has a closet maid system. I went to a few places and am finding that I would either have to make the drawers, custom order drawers or get a new system.
Hey how many coat paints did you do ? Also did you finish all your coats in your garage before installing or just one coat? If so did you do the final coat after finishing installing. If so what grit sandpaper you used

Great video! I couldn't find where you may have explained how you made the holes for the pins that hold the shelves. Any advice in that regard? Thank you.
Yes I used this jig amzn.to/39oLIAK
Would’ve like to see more on getting the lights installed, how you used the jumper cables etc, but thanks for the vid and the links to what you used!
We are doing the same so I’m considering a puck light instead in that area if it is really noticeable.
just replied to your first comment.
Love that you are using 1/2 inch plywood instead of 3/4 inch.
Thanks
Hi Philip. Absolutely amazing work. How did you get the holes for the shelves spaced correctly?
Thanks I used a pin hole kreg jig the link to the tool is in the description.
Hi Phil, awesome presentation!! I the use for the MDF... otherwise this helped me tremendously!
Thanks glad to help
How is this $1000 in materials? The 20 1/2” plywood sheets alone would be over that price. ???
I was able to get sheets for about $35 a sheet.
Great work. The only thing I didn’t see is how did u attached the boxes to the back wall.
I used L brackets at the top
Tiny closet 5ft back wall and sides 4 ft. When open the door we use 4 ft both sides back is kinda useless has a rod. Not enough do corner storage...
That is challenging
What’s your closet size/dimensions?
98in x about 114in
Did I misunderstand or did you actually use 18 sheets of 4x8? It just does not add up to nothing close to your displayed price?
Prices have drastically increased since I built the closet. Some costs have 3x.
How has the paint held up since you've built this, particularly under the shoes. Have you had to touch up or repaint?
No issues. I recommend using an enamel based paint better than acrylic
Without the plans, you can recreate or customize it based on your space with the right help or knowledge
you can modify or change the plans using the 3D SketchUp model
Awesome video, I am going to give this a try in our closet.
You can do it
Hey man you never even explain how you installed the drawers and how you added1x2 face over drawers
I have a separate drawer video that I made going into more details on how to make the drawer box. I am also working on an updated drawer box video that will be coming out soon so be sure to sub if your interested in seeing it.
how did you build the drawers?
here is a video showing you how I made the drawers ua-cam.com/video/M2UfSxgZuYs/v-deo.html
$1000 for parts…….$5000 for the tools I need. 😂
I you could do it all with a track saw and a few guides it would be much cheeper • GRS-16 PE Parallel Edge Guide Rail Square | bit.ly/3KFK5Es
• TPG Parallel Guide System | bit.ly/40Ntvbo
What is the depth of the each closet box? Looks like 24" as the clothes don't stick out past the frame.
it is 24"
This is such a great build! I did freak out a bit around 6:47 though. When using any nailer I would recommend keeping your fingers at least 1.5x the length of the nail away from the tip of the nailer. And with plywood you never know what is on the inner layers; there could be a knot in just the wrong spot.
Anyway, great video!
That is true
I'd do a separate video on how to use a chop saw and focus this video more on the specifics of building the closet. a lot of time spent on basic carpentry skills - hopefully those looking to take on this project would have those skills honed already
thanks for the suggestion.
You make cutting the board with two passes look so easy! I'm always off a hair and it drives me crazy. I have a 12 in miter but will be getting a sliding one soon so that should help with a lot of my cuts. I'm about to build my entire master closet and got lots of tips from your video! Thank you!!
You can do it! Just takes messing up on all the other ones ;) you just saw the good one!
Did you just put down more carpet tack strips and replace the carpet? How did you stretch the carpet when you were putting it back down?
Will the glue on painted parts hold ok long term?
I reused the same carpet I had. Just had to put new tac strips down and stretch it. Not sure I understand glued on painted parts
I try and do what makes since.
I wanted to see how you made the drawer section. Otherwise, good video!
Thanks. I have a drawer nice video on my channel that shows how I make the box
Seems like a good way to justify the purchase of a good track saw!
Why not
I'd like to know HOW you did your drawers.
Fortunately I have a friend that’s doing it for me 😃
Thank you 😁
If you were going to paint it, especially that beautiful plywood, why didn't you make it with melamine?
Cost and weights. I also wanted the ability to touch up paint as I needed. I also think wood is much easier to work with.
@@HowYouCanMakeIt it's now cheaper to use melamine now. Baltic Burch is $240
Baltic is $$$ I can get grade B birch for about $80
I've watched loads of these "to do yourself" clips.
Thanks again!
anytime 😀
It's really clean and ordered closet and with the light there's no fear to be messed up and not to find clothes .
Thanks. I can definitely find my close now way better the the pile I had in the floor
@@HowYouCanMakeIt Thanks for your reply. Please have chance to see and subscribe my youtube channel. See you later.
Very nice. What size is it? It looks like it’s 8’ x 10’?
yes, it is about that size
Great job. about how long did it take you to do this job? did you make the drawer frnts or buy them pre- made with the drawer box and all.?
I made the drawer fronts. I am going to be making a new video showing how I make just the front. The closet took about 40hrs to make. I have a new video coming out in the next week or two going over the closet in some more detail
What happened to the section of your video the describes the set of drawers?
I have a video already on the channel that shows how to make simple drawers.
Turned out excellent. I was surprised to see your holes for shelve pins. Nice
Thanks
Not sure if $1000 in the title is supposed to mean cheap or expensive
Affordable. To have this closet custom built by a carpenter or home builder would be between $10,000-$15,000
I don’t understand why a lot of theses videos don’t explain the importance of having the tools that’s required for this. Tool price it’s self is around 3k to 3.2k it self.
You could use a track saw to cut down the material that would drastically reduce your tool investment cost.
Prices have increased since I released the video. It all depends on what type of plywood you end up selecting
Haha.
Thanks
Tamara
Thanks for the comment and support.
The easiest way to achieve this is to use the Ikea Pax design tool then order the items. I did similar for my daughter. Everything fits perfectly and it goes together quickly. They last years too.
4:08 neighbour pulls out the leaf blower
😁
How did you put the wholes for the selves support
The tool I used is linked in the description. It is a pin hole jig
Now these days the closet will cost 2500
That is true.
A pocket door would be a fantastic way to add room to your closet space!! Great job!
Thanks
What size was the door to get in the closet ?
Lovely. What is the dimensions of the space?
About 99" x115"
Carrie’s Dream closet for a grand. No Mr Big needed 😂 thanks for posing plans options for us to contact later. Saved this video! Moving in a few weeks and have access to my dads tools 😂🎉
Thanks, with inflation you could do it for about $2,500 on a budget
I have a room that i want to turn into a huge closet a bit bigger than this one . Problem is my ceilings are sloped? I cannot find anyone in the ares to build something for me so i am wanting to do it myself witj my husband . If i give you dimentions and provide picture wiññ you be able to give me a material list and blueprint that way i have guidelines on how to go aboit it , of course i would pay you . . Please let me know if this is possible !
I currently do not do custom blue prints or designs at this time
Great build. Can you tell me why use 1/2 inch instead of 3/4 inch ply? 1/2 seems to be less stable in my opinion. Are there any cons ro using 3/4 inch?
Two reasons. Cheeper and I wanted the edges when put together to be 1”
A closet makes a closet. Nice!
True
Did you make the shaker style drawers for this closet or buy them? I saw your drawer video on making a simple drawer and it’s not a shaker drawer. I bought a house and it already has a nice closet but there are no drawers in the closet. I found that the closet has a closet maid system. I went to a few places and am finding that I would either have to make the drawers, custom order drawers or get a new system.
I made it myself. I am updating the plans for this project to give you more details on the drawers. I hope to have it updated in a few days.
Looks great but I was really wanting to see how well the led lighting worked.
I have a follow up video showing more ua-cam.com/video/0BfkL_syVO8/v-deo.html
You don't have to flip it you could just lift it and cut it
That would work
How did you reinstall the carpet?
I reused the old carpet and laid it out and put new tacks in.
No Value don't waste your time!!
Oof, tough crowd! But hey, everyone’s got their taste, right? Thanks for stopping by!
What would the updated cost for this be, I am thinking close to $7,000?
I would think around $3,000-$4,000
You did a really good job my friend well done!
Thank you.
This was over 3 years ago. Now over $2,000. Thanks Biden.
inflation has affected the price for sure.
@@HowYouCanMakeIt I bought the plans anyway. Hopefully lumber prices would go down soon.
Me too thanks for the support

How to fix the Wardrobe boxes to the wall?
I had pre-marked where the studs were and drilled them to the stud
Hey how many coat paints did you do ? Also did you finish all your coats in your garage before installing or just one coat? If so did you do the final coat after finishing installing. If so what grit sandpaper you used
I did two coats in the garage and then did a final touch up after it was installed. 180 grt or finer for sandpaper
What is the size of your walk in closet
About 101in x 90in I think. Can’t remember the exact size
