Oh, the naivety of these armchair critics who think you can sing like that, keep that timing and hit those notes while drunk or drugged. I might ask 'what are you on?' And she's smiling...because she's having fun!
Perfectly said. People always seem to WANT her messed up. So they can wallow in poor Judy. Besides, I am one who thinks the alcoholism thing is a bit overstated. I have been around alcoholics a lot in my life and when you are a for real alcoholic it's an everyday thing, and she doesn't look or act like an alcoholic. At least not like the many I've known.

Garland looks & sounds magnificent, pure soulful bliss, greatness like this will never happen again & so easy to stay up all night jumping from one incredible performance from Judy on youtube after another...Bravo great lady, you are loved and missed!
This version is great, but I strongly disagree that it's better than the one heard in BABES ON BROADWAY. That version for me is right up there with "Over the Rainbow" and "The Man That Got Away."
I can see why you disagree, I just prefer this version because she managed to re invent the song after two decades with a lot of personality, voice also sounds great so its pretty impressive haha @@topogigio2879
I see a couple of comments re pills and that she seems drunk. As a rule she did not drink much before a performance only after or privately. Judy was very high strung with or without pills. She had been so accustomed to taking something it was second nature. It began as child actress. Her mother and the studio were responsible. The mentality was if there was something wrong it could be fixed with a pill something that became very much part of and still is in American culture unfortunately.
I see that someone mentioned pills. It must also be borne in mind that she was a high octane performer who always gave 105%. She sang this song, that's entertainment, (at the famous Carnegie Hall concert), with the same exuberance as she shows here. Another couple of examples are when she performed with her daughter Liza on her TV show and with Donald O'Connor, also on the TV show.
Black American song writers - "After You've Gone" is a 1918 song composed by Turner Layton (1894-1978), with lyrics written by Henry Creamer (1879-1930)
She was known in her youth as MGM’s proponent of swing. They dusted off “you made me love you“ and she made it swing. One of her biggest hits from that era was “Swing, Mr. Mendelssohn, Swing.” She was always the standard bearer and progressive voice for popular songs. Sold a ton of albums. She never stopped learning new songs as well, for example “As Long As He Needs Me” from OLIVER!
Imagine if she never started smoking how her voice would’ve sound at this age and the fact she did smoke and still sound like this shows how much natural talent there was here
If judy was drunk she wouldnt have been singing like angel.. i wish these jerks would stop posting these rude observations.. if u dont like her then why dont you choose another artist?
i was watching a clip with dean martin, Judy garland, and frank Sinatra. it was Judye's turn to sing. She was doped or drunk and frank whispered the words to her. It didn't matter, drunk or sober she blew both of them away and sang better than both. In fact the only two women that Frank was kind of jealous of, was Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald, that he mentioned in his autobiography. in fact Judy was on stage and it must of been her peak, she was magnificent. Frank was there, the audience wanted Frank to goon. He said are you kidding, and try to follow that act. No as much as I love Frank's voice and he is the best male voice, Judy could blow him away singing.
At that point in her life I don't believe she was on anything or drinking. She was in the midst of her comeback after almost dying in 1959. And she was allowed two classes of wine per day, and that was it. That's why she was still a tad overweight. Besides it was tv, they would have stop shooting and start over. Plus CBS never would have signed her if she was drinking to excess.
Iconic “poppy” dress.
She is the only girl who mattered back then
Judy Garland was a songstress supreme! Take a lesson youngin's!
She sings so effortlessly! Judy Garland will live through those with good taste in music!
greatest entertainer of the 20th century HANDS DOWN!!
I think you can add the 21 Century so far.
She was not
And was widely regarded as so while she was active in show biz.
@@manchadeltigre she was close enough! Not much competition at that level.
That’s the craziest version of this song I’ve ever heard in the best way possible! WOW!!! Judy!!!!

Thank u Mickey
The magnificent Judy Garland in pure BELTING mode. Love it.
After reading read every book watching Judy the movie and documentary s. I will never understand how this tortured soul lived to 47
Because she had a fantastic sense of humor. Even that wasn’t enough to save her from the damage done to her poor little body.

Those pipes on her
By jove, I've never realized how AMAZING a singer Judy Garland was!
Her little bows :$ What a magnificent lady she was.
The 1942 version is just stunning and so emotional then I see this and don't have words because she topped it somehow. Incredible!

Actually, it was in FOR ME AND MY GAL, same year. My mistake.

Such an adorable song - very "vaudevillian" in sound......
🥰 I love this wowwww
Not just a singer but a performer who knows how to hold an audience in the palm of her hand.

Wow! Two minutes of pure emotion! Captivating..

Yeah great technic and amazing sense of swing, soulful
Aretha Franklin is reputed to have said, "Judy Garland *was* soul."

Does anybody know where Judy's poppy dress is today? Who owns it? Is it in a collection that goes on display?
That's what I was thinking. I would guess pills though.
If judy was drunk she wouldnt have been singing like angel.. i wish these jerks would stop posting these rude observations.. if u dont like her then why dont you choose another artist?
I like it better done 'slow, broad and grand' (the meaning of 'largo' according to my old piano teacher.) See Eydie Gorme's version.
Don't need to, love Judy's version.
She sang this for me and my gal 1942

That's after the drugs isn't it...
Beyoncé vibes fr
Is it just me or does Judy look drunk?
It's just you.
I'm afraid it's you....
She both!!
She was probably half drunk or on pills. As usual in those years. So sad
