Which portable unbalanced DAC/AMP under 200/250$ sounds the best and the most detailed used as a DAC (I will connect it with an external amplifier)? It will be nice to have 2/3 suggestions. Man, this is awesome! That’s what I thought until I compared the sound of it to my old receivers with headphone out. So much flatter that doesn’t lack in bass when Bass-X is off or have too much bass when it’s on. This is my first DAC, but I tested a few others at a local store and this fit my portable needs perfectly! This also can be used as a desktop DAC if needed/wanted. I highly recommend Bass-X for most headphones...but only because it lacks in bass otherwise. I’m trying them with my Shure 215 IEM right now with a compressed mp4 version of Lord of the Rings and, with the Bass-X on, I’m hearing stuff I haven’t heard since watching it in the theater! Really makes that low end from the orchestra drums stand out :D Definitely seems like it’s a bit much though. Now I’m watching The Greatest Showman, and the difference between Bass-X on and off is stupid! If I don’t have it on, it looses all fullness and power and sounds really thin. Other thing is, the bass boost doesn’t mask anything or muddy it up....sort of. It does exactly what they say it does, in that, it “adds back” the bass lost from most headphones...actually, that’s incorrect. It’s the Hip DAC that took away that proper bass in the first place. This was quite a bit lighter than the other portable DAC’s I tried. Even though this is pretty light, its build feels really rugged. 5-7hrs battery life I’d say. If they fixed the sound balance, it would be awesome. Also, Power Match basically just raises the volume a bit it seems. Good for a Bass Head maybe. May sell mine. I get a better, more even sound from the headphone out on my phone.
What firmware are you running? Have you tried others. iFi has a myriad of updates (they are all under the same unified firmware updates on their support site) and many of them change filters and a variety of other factors affecting the DAC.

Great reviews man! Thanks from Tony
Just did a test run using my hibby BT R2 as a BT receiver and then digital output via USB into my fiio btr as the DAC/AMP, works great, wow is the btr5 warmer than my hibby which I noticed during back to back testing.
I also have Q1mk2 and topping nx4 and ifi Hip dac is the best sounding of them all. Downsides are lack of analogue line-in/out and volume knob being slightly too loose imo for portable use. Accidental volume changes in the pocket did happen to me (Q1 and NX4 don't have this problem).
However Hip dac is not as good sounding as Zen DAC. They don't sound the same at this time because Hip DAC comes without GTO filter firmware installed. It will be available soon to update I imagine. I believe Hip DAC has linear filter firmware installed. This doesn't bother me as I won't be updating to GTO filter anyway because linear filter sounds better imo. I compared both with stock firmware (edit: 5.3) and Zen DAC has definitely better sound. They have VERY similar sound signatures but Zen has definitely better components that you couldn't physically fit inside Hip DAC. Zen DAC presents wider sound stage and better resolution. Zen DAC is staying by my bed but Hip DAC is the second best thing and my main portable solution (over NX4 or Q1mk2).
@@sapphiro On the Zen, I didn't like the GTO filter either and I bounced it back to the previous firmware. The GTO made everything a bit ... too smooth, if that makes sense? Love the Zen for the desktop and now my older gen 1, Nano iDSD is for laptop only use. I have loved the iFi products over the last few years.
@@bilelbeavis977 From usb sources to 3.5mm output NX4 is louder but ifi from 4.4mm output is probably much louder (I didn't test balanced). NX4 has 114mW @ 300ohm (3.5mm) and Hip dac has 200mW @ 300ohm (4.4mm balanced) and ~100mW (3.5mm) I can't say how well it would drive higher than 300ohm headphones (I don't have any). It's more than enough for Sennheiser HD600 from 3.5mm single-ended.
Yes, the usb A slot is too small for Sony walkman adapter cable (NWH10) to directly connect them. I had to shave off a little layer of plastic cable plug to fit it. Works great.

Man your reviews are so good you make wanna buy everything 😂 But seriously, I got myself a pair of Beyer DT 177x and a hart balanced cable, now im thinking if Fiio Q1 Mark II will suffice for that low impedance or if this will have a much bigger impact. Any thoughts since youve tried both?
If you have anything that demands more power than the hd600, get this or the idsd nano black label. But if you like bluetooth and don't have hard to drive headphones, get the btr5 no question.
Update: Issue solved. Turn off key clicks on iPhones solves the annoying pops. Thanks Jamie. Great support. Seems to have issues when playing the higher rate audio files. Noise pops and gaps happen if a text or any other app is being used on the iPhone. This doesn’t happen with the lower bit rate tracks and the green light glows.
Thanks for the review! Purchased my own hip dac within a week of watching this review. I hope to try and use the balanced-out to connect to the balanced-in on my SMSL amplifier. The only problem is that the cables to do that are not cheap. Thanks again for your awesome reviews.
Hey Zeos, I have a stupid question. What's the difference between balanced and unbalanced inputs/outputs/cables? Thank you sir, go brush Chewbacca for me my dude.
There's three differences between them. Balanced uses higher voltage generally 4V compared to 2.3V for rca (single ended) . This helps to raise the signal above the noise floor. Second balanced uses difference amplifiers when done properly. A difference amplifier is for noise rejection. It is generally used for stuff like long microphone cables in a live performance. It's usefulness over a short length is small. Third Balanced uses individual grounds compared to rca common ground. So care is required when connecting balanced electronics with single ended stuff.
@@DerekMoore82 for more info try searching UA-cam for "what is common mode rejection" or "what is a difference amplifier" as my understanding is limited and will probably cause confusion if I attempt any in depth explanation.
For headphones, balanced is basically using two contacts (+ and -, or 'signal and ground') for a single channel. And then another pair for the other channel. So 4 contacts for stereo. A 'normal' connection uses two + contacts and a shared - for a stereo signal. This _generally_ means that there are two amplifier circuits, one for left and one for right. Instead of a single amplifier driving both left and right. Since there are now two amplifiers, it results in more power, which can affect the sound. I do say 'generally' because it van be different per implementation. Some people also say the fact that the - contact (ground) is not shared makes the sound purer.. But ehmm.. Let's just say 'believe what YOU want to believe'. Balanced connection in the studio world (and plugging in XLR microphones and such) is another kind of balanced.. Which I consider the true balanced :). It has nothing to do with 'balanced headphones'. Normally for a single mono signal you use two contacts, + and - (signal and ground). In a balanced connection they use two + contacts and a single - contact (so 3 contacts) for a _mono_ signal. The two + contacts are 'opposite' of each other. Long store short , a trick with 'phase' of the signal to eliminate interference over the cable. Very handy for stage and studio where the cable can be extremely long. These kind of connections need support at both ends (both devices being plugged in) or you need to modify wires a bit. People who think 'balanced headphone connection' over a TRRS jack has anything to do with 'balanced as in signals opposite of each other' have it wrong
This sounds great with the Sennheiser 800 modified or 800 S with Bass-X on, because those headphones are pretty flat and detailed but lacks some on the low end.
Hey Z, do you still have this or did you garage-sale it? This would be perfect if it did actually have analog-in, amp-only operation.... but it's close enough.
In your review of the XD-05 Plus, you said it could be basically a starter kit for someone new to the scene. It's small, powerful, portable, and has everything you could possibly need. Well... What about this? I have a pair of DT 177X GOs in the mail and want to know whether or not this is my best bet. The lack of bluetooth realllllyyyyy sucks, but the fact that I could almost just put this in my wallet is awesome and it's far cheaper.
the xbass doesnt work on the 177x Go. absolute noise a flutter of absolute shit boomy bass. if you dont use xbass it works perfectly fine and powers in completely fine. i own both.
That iFi makes a DAC/amp desktop unit that has bluetooth and also makes this which is a small, portable unit that doesn't have bluetooth seems like the result of a sense of humour or a bizarre oversight.

Hmm i haven't listened to the Q5S, but I can tell you that the Fiio Q1 Mk2 sounds better than the Ifi Hipdac. Welp, at least to me when I auditioned it at my local store. Q1 is slightly more detailed and the instrument placement in the music is more precise. The hipdac just sounds muddy in the midrange and I'm not sure if the unit at the store is defective or what, but my music sounds noticeably off from what I'm used to listening on my LG V20 and Burson Playmate. Not to mention the Q1 is also smaller too. The hipdac's analogue volume pot has serious channel imbalance at 6 to 7 o'clock (just after power on position) but is fine at louder volumes. Something to bear in mind when using it with sensitive IEMs. Another small detail that I preferred is the centre input port on the Q1 (Q5S also have centred input port too) and it lines up perfectly with the port on my phone. Get the Fiio CL06 right angled cable and the whole thing is compact af for maximum portability. The cable included with the hipdac is short and stiff and I'm afraid I may break the charging port on my phone, plus the Usb A port on the hipdac is not centred, making the short cable bend even more. Welp, this is the Q1 Mk2, and the Q5s is supposedly an upgrade over it, so hope these infos somewhat helps you in your purchase decision. You really should hear the Ifi hipdac for yourselves and let me know if the hipdac sounds weird or its just me or the unit at the store! Oh, I used a Fiio FH5 (16 ohms) and unbalanced output for both of the devices
Looking for my first pair of audiophile(ish) headphones. Thinking I can get a neutral set that will also satisfy my bass addiction when paired with this or the zen dac amp. Any suggestions for sub $400 cans that would pair well?
This is probably a late response, but I would highly recommend the wired version of HiFiMan DEVAs for 219. The sound and comfort are simply incredible for the price point. They're likely mid-fi but I don't have the equipment to see if they'll scale to hi-fi. They do require some power to "open up" but not a ton. I pair mine with a Zen DAC and I'm trying to decide on a solution for my phone. I'm between the Hip DAC and the Earman Sparrow. The Sparrow seems to skew more towards energetic listening and is directly competing with AudioQuest with value for performance.
@@dasninjastix thanks so much for the suggestions. You're not too late, still dragging my feet. Actually in a worse dilemma now because I'm debating on headphones, home speakers, or car audio upgrade.....I can only afford one at the moment.

Fiio m15 is like 10x more expensive. According to specifications fiio m15 dac has more capable chip in it. That doesn't mean Fiio automatically sounds better. Ifi audio carefully programmed and tuned their DAC themselves. Hip DAC sounds very natural and has warm and relaxed signature.

Apparently there's a difference between playing MQA, and decoding/unfolding. If I'm correct does this decode MQA and how would you compare sound quality to the Cobalt? Cheers
the XD-05 non-plus also had that recessed, big USB plug.
The recessed usb male connector is just perfect for me where I use the Apple usb short cable (CCK) from iPhone SE, sourcing (high res soon hopefully) Apple Music
How do you think this would pair with the Beyerdynamic Dt 1990 pro?
"It looks like a vibrator battery!"
Is that your subject of expertise? 🤣🤣🤣😂😂
What top 3 headphones do you recommend for bass??
That USB-A is for ipad or iphone camera connector to connect this DAC to apples devices.
Xduoo xd05 vs ifi hip dac?
The reason using 2 Type of USB one for data and one for charge , Its for Android compatibility issues ( some phones they go on charge only and cant use data , they do with work around) Thats why . Nano IDSL balck had a lot of problems connecting with some android phones.
Zeos, you want serious amplification with Bluetooth included? For that, ifi has the *xCAN,* which came out around the same time as the xDSD. ifi might have a replacement device in the works, but perhaps you could ask them to send an xCAN to you for review.
I just got this, then saw the zen dac and also zen can, got confused but I think I’ll trust that you said it’s basically the same as this
I have heard the Magni 3 plus or Hersey sound better than this, what would you say? I’m using this with sennheiser 600s and this for basically light mixing and reference. I do like the xbass a lot, reminds me of a car with subwoofers pumping. Good for reference
But overall sound quality would you say the schiit magni3 plus and Hersey sound better? They have a restocking fee so I’m a bit hesistant to buy and return their products
bought this and paired it with Dekoni Blues (notice a theme?)
absolutely killer lil bundle man.
Pulled the covid trigger on blon 03, cp 100 tips, yinyoo 6 core .78mm 2 pin straight cable, and the hip dac.
I've had some chifi AS06 items for a while that where meh, and decade old pair of Sen HD580s that I've never been able to power since they're 300 ohms to drive.
Thanks for the reviews, I'm pretty excited.
Off topic : any good upgrade over ear cans under 200 worth it? Maybe 1more triple vs hifiman 4xxs? Am I in the right ball park?
beyer tygr :D
Zeos, couldn't you use the Ear studio 100 as your bluetooth receiver with this unit?
No line in so you can't send signal in other than through usb
It's inserting to hear the 3 different sound signatures on the iFi Dac's when you try the 3 firmware's (5.2B) (5.30) (5.3c)
What
McJerkins, firmware updates from ifi’s support/download page that affect the filter of the usb input xmos chip, 5.3c ie “cookies and cream” installs the GTO filter for improved transients! YMMV! 🙂
@@smcpac wow way to overcomplicated a cheap DAC AMP
@@Emira_75 Wow???, "...overcomplicated...", OK... if going to a product support page and clicking a download icon for an improved firmware update is beyond your cognitive abilities... have someone help you... PS: the ifi Zen is not a cheap dac-amp... it's a very good sounding high quality and high value unique product!
@@smcpac cheap = low cost. Not shit. I love my hipDAC. Calm down mate lifes too short, thanks for a reply worth laughing at tho😂 Its overcomplicated because of the numerous sound signatures for a fckn portable amp, its not needed imo. not complicated due to the process of updating firmware
Which portable unbalanced DAC/AMP under 200/250$ sounds the best and the most detailed used as a DAC (I will connect it with an external amplifier)? It will be nice to have 2/3 suggestions. It must be portable and have any line out. It does not have to be super small or super powerful. It just have to sound good as a DAC, have an line out and be portable. What should I choose?
Earmen TR amp, just wonderfull sound and detailed.
Lol, that's my nick XD
Ya know, the biggest thing I HATE about my Q3, is the small connection that wobbles just the slightest bit and disrupts play, and the rubber pad instead of the sticky nips that came with my IFI Dac hip, the only thing it does SOOOOO MUCH better, is humps my MT-602 with a beautiful sonic character that the IFI doesn’t for some reason, but by itself, that hipdac is a modern marvel in my life, I’m getting my 7hz today and I’m just stupid excited, I can’t sleep Zeos, I need help man, I need to stop. ITS TIME TO STOP! WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS? I need to talk to them
Which one is better sounding, this or the BTR 5?
The USB connector also works perfectly with the apple camera kit for iphones and ipad as that is how it terminates, say yay for once using apple devices isn't a pain in the ass to connect to a dacamp
This or fiio BTR 5 ?
Same question!
I have both btr 5 amazing and good enough to drive sennheiser 58x ( maybe even some harder to drive ones) but hipdac has crazy power. It will even drive my modhouse argons. Comes down to what you need. Btr5 is definitely more portable .
@@NestorZaharopoulos But in you're opinion which one sounds better ?
@@samstone2641 i would say the btr5 doesn't do much to sound ifi definitely is warmer bass boost is nice as well. Im not the biggest bass head but when i use it i really like it. They are both really good sounding. I would say the btr5 is just a tad better because ot os the most analytical.

Which is best ?
XBass in hip dac or true Bass in zen dac v2 ?
which is better? ifi HipDAC or FiiO BTR5?
Would this benefit the Sigva Phoenix?
I think you should make top 10s for headphones, amps and dacs
Do you happen to have tin p1 as well? I looked over internet to read about their synergy and couldn't find a single mention of them together
therealchickentender Oh wow! I didn’t realize that! Thanks! I’ll look into it
Prabin Paudel I don’t have a Tin P1
Hey thanks so much for your great info for a guy that loves sound and knows nothing about it...I have a question for you if youd be so kind to help me with it . I'm in a rehab hospital now for 9 months and dont want to buy or not buy the rite cords because I cant go out and buy them I'm paralyzed for a bit. I wand to buy a IFI HipDac and add it to my Oculos Quest VR Headset that is really underpowered. Can you tell me what short cords I need to go from the Quest to the Hip Dec?
Thanks for any help.
Lee Brown I don't like the GTO filter either
Does it have more power than nx4?
@@bilelbeavis977 From usb sources to 3.5mm output NX4 is louder but ifi from 4.4mm output is probably much louder (I didn't test balanced).
NX4 has 114mW @ 300ohm (3.5mm) and
Hip dac has 200mW @ 300ohm (4.4mm balanced) and ~100mW (3.5mm)
I can't say how well it would drive higher than 300ohm headphones (I don't have any).
It's more than enough for Sennheiser HD600 from 3.5mm single-ended.
Hi Z,i have the Q1mk2 bought years ago based on your recommendation, is this an upgrade to that? Thanks!
Hi Z, I bought the hip-dac, like it alot. What kind of over ear headphone do you recommend, if the budget would be 200 dollars
Watch his review for the Audio Technica m40x. Then buy em and save you some money.
How will the DT 1900 pro sound like if I pair it with this baby?
Does it come filled with whiskey?
how does it compare to the zen dac?
Using IEMs with Phone/Fiio Q1 Mark II is it worth upgrading ? I want the BASS :D
Yes, the usb A slot is too small for Sony walkman adapter cable (NWH10) to directly connect them.
I had to shave off a little layer of plastic cable plug to fit it. Works great.
For portability would the Fiio btr5? Or ifi zen hip?
Hi Z will this hip dac power the hd6xx @ 300ohm
just purchased one of these out of stock in a lot of places must be so good $233 AUD...
I will have to run this with the NON usb-C cable for my phone...
I did pick up an alternative OTG cable if it's no good i will pick up an official on at a later date.
I'm kind of late to the portable dac and iem game, but how does this compare to BTR5?
If you have anything that demands more power than the hd600, get this or the idsd nano black label. But if you like bluetooth and don't have hard to drive headphones, get the btr5 no question.
Compared to the BTR5? Better?
Did the balanced out to Amp setup work?
I use 4.4mm from hip dac to zen can, yes it works.
Second
balanced uses difference amplifiers when done properly. A difference amplifier is for noise rejection. It is generally used for stuff like long microphone cables in a live performance. It's usefulness over a short length is small.
Third
Balanced uses individual grounds compared to rca common ground. So care is required when connecting balanced electronics with single ended stuff.
@@chrisvinicombe9947 Alrighty then, thanks Chris.
U think it would go well with HD650 as well?
sushilogic Yeah, I don’t see why not
They have enough power for the hd 800?????
@@94jmbottaro Yes.

ifi HipDac vs centrance portable hd dac? and ifi hipDac vs topping nx4? Great review thank you!!! :P
Hey Z, do you still have this or did you garage-sale it?
This would be perfect if it did actually have analog-in, amp-only operation.... but it's close enough.
Would this work with a headphone that happens to have an inline mic? For example HD 598CS
Has anyone tried the hip dac with fostex 50rp mkIII? Can hip dac push them with power match on?
That's exactly what I wanted to know . Can they Z??????
Yes balanced 👍
@@theodorezurla496 the t50rp mk3 don't have a balanced 3.5mm connector built into them, unless you specifically order a modded pair to have balanced, or mod them yourself to be.

Hows the sound quality hold up to the Fiio Q5s?
@@njj42 Thanks! If I ever audition the hipdac I'll let you know!

monoprice m570.. 😅 this is my plan at least.. 🤣
Actually in a worse dilemma now because I'm debating on headphones, home speakers, or car audio upgrade.....I can only afford one at the moment.
all of these iFi devices seem to have different "flavor" firmwares that ad or subtract features and i love that. they could just sell a special "MQA" version but nah, here's your firmware that limits your resolution cap but adds your fancy Tidal format if you want it Lol ..pretty cool company, Amazon says my iFi Zen DAC should be here tomorrow :)
The only problem are i can get nx4 dsd $60 cheaper and no line out
This vs IFI nano IDSL Black ??? in your opinion?
Hi Z - In your opinion, is the HIPDAC better than the DA converter in the Fiio 15? Or just different? - In what way? Mucho thanks
