    If their lives were
    Exotic and strange
    They would likely have
    Gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane
We each pay a fabulous price
    For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision
Is a dream with a mission
All these years along, still good advice. Thanks Professor.

Just that second verse - "I hear their passionate music
. Read the words that touch my heart", is enough to drive even the most steadfast Rush fan over the edge into tears right now. This was and always has been one of my favorite songs and one that not only inspired me, but pulled me out of some dark moments of my life. Neil's words really did touch my heart on this one and it feels like a part of me died last week. :(

    • @oldskool4572
      @oldskool4572 3 роки тому +5

@Surfeit A Show of Hands was the very first Rush cd I bought. I have no idea why I bought it to be honest. I'd never heard any of their music before, so maybe it was the cover that attracted me or I'd heard someone mention them...no idea. Anyway, after the initial "whoa, that man's voice is a little high" I thought this sounds ok. Then Subdivisions kicked in as if it came from the future and that was it, I was hooked. The prog geek inside me just went into overdrive and I listened in awe to every awesome bass note, guitar brilliance and godlike drumming, plus all those time changes they made and thought," how the hell can 3 guys sound this fucking monstrous?"
Then Mission came on and I was just so enraptured I must have replayed it several times before moving on. Headphones on, playing air guitar....and that solo at the end. With the words and the music....just blew me away. It was one of those transcendent moments that happen only a few times in your life, if you're lucky. (Witnessing the birth of my 2 daughters later on in life would be others I was very fortunate to have). I realised then and there, I had accidentally stumbled upon my new musical obsession, just by whimsically buying a live album by a band I had never listed to before.
Suffice to say I spent the next weeks and months buying everything they had ever done on cd and(which was up to Presto at this point, and the "whoah, his voice is high" became more apparent the further back I went in their catalogue. But in a good way of course!). Talking of Presto, that was my first studio album of theirs I bought after A Show of Hands, just because it was their latest. Hand Over Fist was another "Mission" moment for me as well. I also got hold of A Show of Hands on VHS. And then, during Roll The Bones, I finally got the chance to see them live at Birmingham and they played Mission. Life changing experience.
Its no exaggeration to say Rush were one of those bands that gave me enormous comfort and solace in those days, as a young awkward guy, lacking self esteem and all kinds of other issues. Their music truly saved my life. That statement often gets bandied about a lot and runs the risk of losing meaning, but its true. And I guess it clearly was for you to.
I love all their albums in different ways (Signals being my favourite) but A Show Of Hands, and most notably Mission, was the start of that journey. That album and that song will always hold a special place in my heart. Still to this day one of the most beautiful songs, in any genre, ever composed.
I still listen to them now as a husband and a father who grew up to find life turned out pretty ok for me in the end. And I probably always will. Listening to this song now, and indeed the whole album, brings a tear to my eye.
Thank you Alex, Geddy and Neil. Just thank you.

Alex is under appreciated and I think it comes from the fact that Neil is just top 5 ever and his talent and influence overshadow just about everything else. Geddy plays 2 instruments and sings, Neil composes, writes and does [that] on drums. The casual listener can easily skip over Alex. But Alex is a badass in his own right! Not to be overlooked.

    “It’s cold comfort
    to the ones without it,
    To know how they struggled,
    how they suffered about it.
If their lives were exotic and strange,
they would likely have gladly exchanged
them for something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane.
We each pay a fabulous price
For our vision of paradise, but a spirit
With a vision is a dream, with a mission.”
Is one of my favorite Neil Peart lyrics and it is more powerful to those who have lived it. I love the way he writes it in third person, on the outside looking in. No one fits the description of the artist, film maker, writer, architect or musician better than these three.
As an artist and musician that lyric always nails me to the wall. Any artist with a burning need to do something and they don’t even know why, yet they will suffer, take risks and surrender a life of stability for their dream.
Of course, in reality stability is a lie. It doesn’t really exist and is only something we’re told to keep us in line, control us. The people in this song cannot be controlled and refuse to believe the lie.
Many artists have a passion they cannot turn off, no matter how many times they try. This is why it’s cold comfort to those without the passion to know that those that do often wish they could turn it off because it causes mostly suffering, unless you get real lucky real early on.
Anyway, I love that lyric because it personally drives home what my life might have been had I been normal? I am anything but normal and have fought and scraped creating one dream after another, but there are the biggest ones I still cannot bring to fruition.
What we would consider my masterpiece and as always, it’s about the financing, but a spirit with a vision is a dream, with a mission. It is the largest and seemingly unobtainable of all my dreams. It will never end until I do.

    Hold your fire -
    Keep it burning bright
    Hold the flame
    ‘Til the dream ignites -
    A spirit with a vision
Is a dream with a mission
    I hear their passionate music
    Read the words
    That touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart
When I feel the powerful visions
    Their fire has made alive
    I wish I had that instinct -
I wish I had that drive
    Spirits fly on dangerous missions
    Imaginations on fire
    Focused high on soaring ambitions
    Consumed in a single desire
    In the grip
    Of a nameless possession -
A slave to the drive of obsession -
    A spirit with a vision
    Is a dream with a mission…
    I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
    I walk through
    Their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
    But dreams don’t need
    To have motion
    To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action -
    Pride turns on the drive
    It’s cold comfort
    To the ones without it
To know how they struggled -
    How they suffered about it
    If their lives were
    Exotic and strange
    They would likely have
    Gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane

The audio from this Show Of Hands 1988 live performance is better than their Mission studio recording IMO.
Richer, clearer, stronger live audio than their Snakes & Arrows live recording 20-years later surprisingly. Most importantly, Mission is my most favorite because you can truly feel Neil. Feel his rhythmic power and hear his touching lyrics through Getty's beautiful voice.

Song is about how people would often have a misperception of Neil having "perfect life" being a famous rock drummer. People would often think that he had a perfect job with no strings attached. He writes about the hardships of being on the road & being away from his family for such long periods of time & missing them. "If their lives we're exotic & strange, they would likely of gladly exchanged them for something a little more plain, maybe something a little more sane". RIP Neil, I miss this band so much, but I'm thankful for all the amazing music they gave us.

One of the most sensitive Rush songs.

Jesus Christ. The level of musical insanity in this tune, played freaking live, is just ridiculous. WTF. Best. Band. Ever.

Only been to two Rush concerts and this one (but at Wembley Arena) was one of them. Although nowadays its songs like Natural Science and AFTK i will try and play again and again on my guitar, its the Hold your Fire tour with Alex's Signature guitar and the cool clothing he wore that really inspired me at that time.

What I truly find so amazing is out of all the Bands that are out in this world today my 2absolute favourites are 1. Rush and 2. Dream Theatre , both these bands are monumental and they understood what was meant by entertaining us with music , each carry their own torches of stardom yet so very similar in quality , and to all us Rush fans yes we did lose a remarkably talented Man who was so humble and private , but his lessons in his lyrics will teach and inspire many more to follow and his style of drumming is a gift only one can admire , thank you RUSH for an incredible journey it has been a wonderful ride , may you have as much joy and happiness in your life as you have given your fans
