Johnny is the newest character in Guilty Gear Strive, and he's been out for a little over a month now. How good is he, really? In this video, we'll be looking at the character from four different angles - offense, defense, neutral, and knockdown.

@@mergo5956Yeah probably. The 5f backdashes with 18f total duration are pretty goated. This is your Jack-O/Testament/HC. Perfect balance between speed and s. So they're great defensively while also being extremely difficult to react to like May/Millia backdash.

Would Johnny be broken if he could dash block?
This has nothing to do with his kit, but a few friends of mine who are completely new to the series had me explain how his kit works and the conclusion they initially came to was that, since he sets up a mechanic that tacks on extra hits, he's similar to Bedman?.
Long story short, they now sometimes call him ManMan.

Johnny main since his release. I think he's okay. He has very polarizing matchups. Some are absolutely brutal. His inability to dash block is borderline crippling in some matchups. That said, his offense is good enough to make work once he's in, even in the bad matchups for the most part. I think he'll always be held back by his inability to dash block. Likely around middle tier. If you're playing to win, as in trying to enter tournaments, I don't see a reason to pick Johnny over quite a few other characters. But he's extremely fun and I love the character so I'm sticking with him.

Air card and command jump is pretty fun to use. Definitely not able to dash block makes me nervous.
I do think Johnny is in a fairly good place, he has a lot of unique movement.
He was never able to block dash in any game. He did have a jump cancel in his dash though
I can handle no dash block, but let him jump any time throughout the dash instead of just the start
one thing about his 2p mash is that he gets a hkd that he can set card off through 2p > 214s, so his reward for mashing is higher than most imo
Johnny can also confirm into full combos from punch Normals with a card and mist finer. So he probably has good staggers that he can convert off of, he is also just an insane conversion character.

Hello Mr. Lord of the Knights. When are you planning to play "A.K.I" the recently released character from the hit fighting game Street Fighter 6.
johnny’s meter build feels dependent on conditioning. if your opponent respects a card toss into something or especially a mist finer cancel (gone but not forgotten🕊), it builds a lot of meter. and usually when i’m far away from my opponent (maybe post burst) a couple mist cancels grants a nice chunk of tension

@@Clone4082 i was just joking about how strive mist finer cancels aren’t plus like in xrd or +r, essentially making them gimmicks now
His highest damage (that I know of) combo starters, meaning you can get 50% without meter: Close S, 2HS, 6HS needs a card setup but it’s good damage if you can land it, and finally mist finer, with a card of course.
I'm surprised you didn't mention another way where characters can be "burst safe". And it with really potent moves that force you into a longer hitstun but they're still able to freely move and potentially K ir S mistfiner with a card or ram swords in corner are pretty good examples. You can technically burst them there but since they have a lot of hitstun to work with its a bad idea as they don't have to immediately act if they want a combo.
Can you word this a little differently? I’m confused what is this other ways can be burst safe?
@@natman2939 sorry I'm saying characters that have way still actively attack you while maintaining free movement are inherently more burst safe as they can just hold back while either waiting or before their next input to automatically block burst whilst not giving up a combo opportunity.
For example Johnny's mist finer follow up when hitting a card on his P or K versions are very potent launchers so near the corner Johnny players hold down back to automatically bait burst while waiting for you to fall to follow up with c.S or 5K. Same with ram players, a lot of her corner routes launch 236S or 236HSearly in the combo during this time the swords are causing a wallbounce and then they explode keeping you in hitstun during this time Ram can move freely including by holding down back to automatically bait burst while she waits to follow up.

His charge ibagree feels slower in strive maybe it's because he had the cards now amd not theblinited coin resource he had in xrd to start a lot of his mixup or maybe I'm just imagining it and he still builds meter really quickly
If johnny could dash block I would be satisfied, the most irritating shit is the amount of time the dash takes

I would say good enough. I just wish the other mist finers were available during his stance instead of being locked to just one of them.
I think if Johnny had a dash block, he would be S tier or fringe S tier.

To answer your question, end of November is next release so expect first or second week of November for a trailer, 3rd could be anywhere between February or march, and last will likely be in May again. You’re gonna have to base it off of the second character or just kinda buy it if you are the type to play everyone

I just want to make sure I mesh well with the online of the game overall before I sink $75 for DLC
yeah for sure find a main on the main roster before anything, give it a good 20/30 hours of online with whoever you're playing before you really consider getting ALL the dlc. That's a decent amount of time to say you'll stay into the game. Also look up each of the character guides for each season and make sure you jive with them before grabbing a season.@@natman2939
Take a shot every time LK says "attack from safe ranges"
The Axl matchup is impossible if: 1.- The axl player is good or knows what he's doing and 2.- you dont know how to play against him..... literally cannot touch him, mist finer K is always 1 pixel away from hitting, axl is technically out zoning johnny and without the DASH BLOCK ITS EVEN WORSE
In my experience (peak floor 8 player so grain of salt recommended) if you have meter then you can get some really unconventional positioning and hit S mist finers

I have no experience with older versions of Johnny as Strive is my first Guilty Gear. In my experience he has incredible potential but falls flat incredibly quickly in the hands of a gorilla player like me. It really might just be me but I swear he gets out played, ranged and sped by the weirdest match ups, but like said I'm still basically learning him after 1.5 months
One thing I've noticed is that my opponents dont pay attention to the cards like they should. Soon as a card hits the ground, they forget about it. Trust me....i remind them 🤭

something that i want to have studied is the interaction with clash and trades on mist finer when card procs
as it stands right now, i'm pretty sure card procs on mist finer regardless of what state johnny is in at the time of activation which means johnny can just win trade with stuff when card is active and in certain circumstances trading puts him in an even better position than he would be if the opponent got hit normally
and if this is true to the degree that i suspect it might be, it's going to make balancing the character a nightmare to do and he's already a very lopsided character with his kit in its current state
Yea it feels really bad to 6p a Johnny that over extended but the card covers it
@@hlarjay7503 Historically, Johnny has always had good trade situations from leveled up mist finer. Imagine this:
You are playing Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 and trade with level 3 K mist finer just past midscreen - Johnny proceeds to dash 3 times to the corner, whiffs cS by accident, walks forward for 30 frames, you're still wallstuck, and he combos you for 75% of your health and sets up level 3 again, an unblockable, or zweihander yrc into a 50/50.
Could always be a lot worse lol. The trade situation for Johnny in Strive seems pretty tame to me honestly, and lots of other characters can set up great trades that lead to good situations and damage.
@@hlarjay7503 idk my homie plays Bridget and does rolling cancels into half screen lows that beat the 6p call out constantly. It's not like he's the only one with a set up tool that beats 6p when it "shouldn't". It's a little frustrating to deal with but he's certainly not the only character with access to that kind of option

Goldlewis main, and we suffer together. It absolutely socks to take one whiff punish from 3/4 screen and then get carried to to corner from anywhere where it feels like the game is over with card setups and mix.

+double digits gaurd crush is basically the best reward a blocked attack can give you. What else would you want?

Bro nobody thinks red wild assault is the best what are you talking about, even arc sys themselves know white is blatantly and purposefully the best wild assault, give any character without white wild assault white wild assault and they will easily be a tier
politely, this is cap, red is instant (can't react on hit so you can't burst), and ups conversion ability, giving chars who have no business converting access to positive for free, and then you get the meter back
White is ANNOYING for sure, but it isn't as good as red

His big normals are disjointed only at very tip range, mist is punishable unless you have card out or at tip range.
No consistent way to deal with projectiles, ensenga only frame traps/block string off of level 4 normals so 6h 6k and 2h.
Vault is at perfect timing -1 on block and out of throw range, making it potentially safe but it's not his turn anymore.
His highest damage combos are extremely difficult.
He is strong but he's not brain dead broken. Learn the matchup, or play a zoner.
