I'm Czech and I can tell you one curiosity. We don't even have here big mountains to train alpine skiing. Our highest "mountain" has 1603 meters. And she won 2 different golds in downhill disciplines. This is what makes her true legend!
Commentator when Ledecka starts: ''She is about to write a new page of history at the Winter Olympics Games''. I bet he could never have imagined how true that statement would turn out to be.
She was at that moment not really happy with her run because she in her mind thought she has made some serious errors. So she assumed that she's lost some time on those before who were skiing before her. She literally thought the clock made an error and they will have to add some additional time. What a wonderful race this was!
Interesting fact: Before the Olympic Games, Ester Ledecka received a set of skis at Atomic, which were not hers but were for Mikael Schiffrin. Her set of skis was not ready in time. Ester actually won on skis that belonged to another competitor ;-) ...
Mikaela lend them to her, Awsome spirit and sportsmanship. I will never forget when Esther was told she had won, the look on her face ! Just love both of these young women champion skiers !!
@@michaeljavaras793 That expression of bemusement - BEFORE she's told she's taken the lead - where she just can't quite comprehend what the crowd are going wild about, what she's seeing on the clock/scoreboard... by a long way my favourite moment of the entire PyeongChang Games - even ahead of Lizzie Yarnold's Skeleton Gold (and I'm British)

The best part starts at 55:55. The commentator congratulates Anna Veith on the gold medal and how great she is. Well, Ledecka was still up there and nobody, really nobody could have guessed what was to come. 🤣
Great point, she just gets better and better at the Alpine speed events. This season she won the World Cup Super-G at Val d'Isre in Dec. 2020, 2d in the first WC DH at Crans-Montana, 4th in the DH at Cortina's World Ski Championships 0.06 behind bronze-medalist Mikaela Shiffrin, 4th in Super-G at Cortina, 0.07 behind bronze-medalist Lara Gut-Bahrami, and 3d in the Super-G portion of the combined. Last season 10/20, she won the WC Lake Louise DH, and placed 2d in the overall DH WC standings. And she won a PSG race within a week of each of her WC speed event wins, shades of PyeongChang!!. She's an inspiration to my daughter, who skis and rides. A DH podium at Beijing 2022 and repeat gold in PGS would be a nice feather in the cap.
Když se na tohle dívám pokaždé mi kanou z očí slzy dojetí.ESTERLEDECKÁ dokázala,že i v malé zemičce České rostou velcí bojovníci sportu.Diky Ester..♥️🌹🍀🇨🇿💋🙌.
I feel for Anna Veith, turned out it was her last chance of winning a race, between injuries she suffered in the second part of her career. Also not many know that this race could have won by Johanna Schnarf, an Italian who was having a great season but never won an alpine ski cup race and who was quickest on the last intermediate, ahead of Ledecka and Veith.
Great video! What an amazing and fantastic athlete Ester Ledecka is! She has remebered me the great races of one of my favourite champion of all time, that is the great Deborah Compagnoni! Thanks a lot!
Great to re-watch this exhilarating race! Very challenging course--that flying left-hander - eg. Gut's run at --18:50-- -- freaks me out. Vonn's boo-boo at the end cost her gold, I'd say. She lost at least .75 sec. I've been following this year's women's WC pretty closely; my money would be on Gut-Behrami if there was betting on the WC...which there probably is. She's cranked up to take another big globe, then perhaps retire gloriously. With Veith, Maze, Mancuso, and Vonn retired, Lara's the final member of perhaps the WC's most glamorous brace of top-flight competitors.
That's why the race exists in the first place. Otherwise only five best or so would go at it and that's it. Yeah, I get it. With the track deteriorating after each next skier, it's very difficult for lower seeds to overcome less than supreme advantage it offers to the top seeds, even if such skier could otherwise get better result in better conditions. But still, the race ain't over until the last skier crosses the finish line. We have learned to underestimate others and ignore their will and hearts. That's why our ignorance allows to get excited once in the while when the order of things gets disturbed by them

There are many things to love about this story but one particular I like is that Ester has hopefully taught many to not underestimate underdogs. It honestly kinda bothers me now watching it back hearing that Anna Veith was the winner while there were still so many athletes to compete. I know Ester's win was a giant upset. But still - pronouncing a winner when you definitely can't be sure that they are a winner will hopefully not happen again (at least in downhill skiing) and it's just disrespectful to the other athletes. On another hand - major props to Anna Veith. She took the surprising second place with fantastic grace and I admire that so much.
In the USA the NBC network live coverage of the event had already ended as they all thought no one with a bib number so high could win. I was fortunate as I was watching this feed that was streaming live in the USA and watched the entire event. Ester truly thought there was an error in her timing, she couldn't believe she had taken the lead. The next year on the World Cup circuit she again won a super-g wearing bib 26, that time no one was surprised.
Ledecka's thoughts when she stands at the start and sees reporters doing victory interviews with Veith at the finish: ''Hey! I take offense to that, I haven't even started yet! I'll show you all''.
I didn't appreciate how the announcers were already crowning Anna Veith the Olympic Champion when all of the competitors hadn't even finished their runs, totally rude and inconsiderate.
