This is a perfect encapsulation of why college basketball is so great. The way Cambridge looks up after he lets go of the ball eyes on his shot like he knew it was gonna go in, the audible reaction of a stunned crowd, the kid at the end of the ASU bench being so excited that he trips and hits the deck running onto the floor, all the players running over to the cheerleaders on the baseline, and the stunned faces of the players on the Arizona bench.

I watched this ending on my phone in the Breakroom at work. When Cambridge hit that, I naturally let out a boisterous reaction, and then proceeded to get scolded by two supervisors for my loudness. I had to explain to them, "It was a buzzer-beater from beyond half-court."

How was that not an over the back foul on the big Arizona guy at the 1:28 mark ? That last second shot was just karma doing it’s thing 👍.
I was in a nursing home with my mother-in-law with dementia when this happened and the whole hall must’ve heard me when it very unexpectedly went in . Duke grad here and I was pulling for Bobby Hurley’s team - they sure exemplified his toughness during this game.

Last month against UCLA he did the same thing but it was at the end of the first half instead of the end of the game. Was it still a surprise? You bet, especially when he took off on the opposite leg. I told myself no way. It’s not like it banked in off the backboard or rattled around the rim. It was a clean swish like he has done it before. What made this great was that it was against their rivals in their own building. Now that’s special and something he will reminisce for a long time.
This was great to watch live as a neutral, I can only imagine what it must've been like for ASU fans

So this is actually a really funny comment and I will tell you why.
Just a few minutes earlier, Ballo was fouled. He pretended to be hurt so he would not have to shoot the FTs (he’s terrible at them). Another Arizona player got to take them and made them both.
Of course Ballo came right back in (because it was fake), and he proceeds to make the one shot he shouldn’t.

Its been 10 years since I went to ASU and one thing I've learned is rankings and records mean NOTHING, as when these 2 schools face off, even if one is ranked #1 and the other is dead last.... it's never boring. They're often more interesting than championships imo.

Not just the inbound pass but the person receiving the ball as well. They backed off afraid of fouling and assuming he wouldn’t make it. Cambridge had all the momentum once he caught the ball going toward the basket and nobody made him change direction once to make the shot more difficult. The assistant coach could be saying more than the inbound pass.

You don't even have to "guard" him in that situation, just going near him and forcing him to change direction is effective to burn time and force a worse shot. But the defenders here completely backed off him lol

I know it's easier said than done, but after the Arizona player missed the first free throw he should've missed the second one on purpose. Arizona State had no timeouts, it's a lot more difficult to make a long pass and throw up a deep shot on the fly.

I miss the Lute Olson rivalry with ASU. That was some great basketball back then, and then the ghost of the past gives us this.
I'm a Zona fan and thought ASU was getting a lot of bad calls from the refs. Felt like ASU was getting everything called the other way, multiple players in foul trouble or fouled out as a result, and still pulled off this game. I wasn't even mad when that half court shot went it. They worked their butts off for it. Hopefully we rebound against UCLA.

Probably told the coach before to tell the player to miss the 2nd free throw on purpose, which is exactly what should have been done. Shocked nobody is saying that. 2.9 on the clock. You miss, you make them battle for a rebound, quick pass and quick heave at best.

That arizona guy should have missed the last free throw, Arizona state didnt have a timeout left, so it takes time to rebound, pass to a team mate that is closer to the basket, and shoot. They would have to throw almost a full court shot to win if that's the case.
