the most bizarre college basketball ending of the year
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- The college basketball game between Pepperdine and Portland had a bizarre ending as Pepperdine somehow won 94-93 at the buzzer. With little time remaining, Pepperdine scored an and one layup to make it 92-91. They then missed the ensuing free throw and immediately fouled the Portland player who grabbed the rebound. The Portland player clearly did not appreciate this, as he swung his elbow at the Pepperdine player who grabbed him. It was determined that there was 0.6 seconds left and after the play was reviewed Portland was accessed a flagrant foul but still got to shoot the free throws from the original foul. This meant both teams would get two free throws but then Pepperdine would get the ball back. Both teams made 1/2 of their free throws and then Pepperdine somehow scored on a buzzer beating tip in with just 0.6 seconds left to win 94-93.

Tried my best to summarize in the description. Basically the Portland player was given a flagrant foul for swinging his elbow which meant Pepperdine would get two free throws and the ball back after Portland shot their free throws.
Imagine having money on this game 😂😂💀
Should have gone for triple OT. Would have been fun to watch.
But time had already ran out before he swung.... Is there a rule that states that the play still goes on even after the buzzard? This isn't football.
Sjolund loses the game with a nig*** play.
@@tiderbean technically there was still .6 seconds left in the game, when the game buzzed to end it was not taking into account the final foul which occurred at .6 seconds. To my knowledge I don’t believe you can get a flagrant after the game is over, I believe it would result in a fine or suspension if anything.
whoever fouled the kid on the layup down 3 with 2 seconds needs to be off the team lmfao
Exactly. What happened to guard the 3 and forget everything else? 4th grade rec league move trying to contest that
@@wordlesolve exactly. should have been jumping for joy that he was going for a lay. would have ended the game regardless
It was the same kid who threw the elbow lmao
@@alexanderweaver7613 that player is a bastion of basketball IQ
RIGHT? If you can’t foul on the floor, don’t foul.
2:37 not sure what the exchange is between the 2 women, but it's making the poor little girl cry!! A) How the hell do you only go for a layup down by 3... B) How the hell do you foul the guy going for a layup when they're down by 3?! Both sides created a coachs film of "not what to do" in this situation. Definitely crazy!!
Or it's possible the little girl is crying because she sees her team lost while the lady with her back turned is explaining that the officials are reviewing it to check on the time clock.
Good eye! Did you catch that live or did you have to use replay? 😂
Maybe she just hates basketball and wants to go home, so she’s angry that isn’t over yet 😂
@@philcorrigan5641 lol.... yeah, that's kind of what i was thinking!!
So often you see poor choices by players In the last seconds of games. The basketball IQ of the modern college player just isn't what it used to be. Coach's can draw up plays but then players decide to run their own thing.
The biggest crime is going for 2 with 2.5 seconds left down by 3
that one silly miscue generated the complex ass chain of events lol
But it ultimately paid off. The more you know.
@@dogg-paws still a terrible play
A bigger crime was the foul. Just let him score.
@@robertshonk518 Yes, the players have to be coached up to stay at the arc and not collapse down on D there. DEFINITELY don't foul any shooters esp not someone driving the lane for a layup.
All those missed free throws hurts my soul
Shaq has entered the chat
You should have watched the Tulane and Memphis game. Memphis missed so many free throws and Tulane wasn't great, even though they're the best free throw shooting team in the country I believe. Add in almost 30 turnovers by Memphis and it was a tough game to watch if you're a Memphis fan
that's college ball baby
And if you watch enough basketball you know it happens way to often at the higher levels college and pros
They were also at the end of the second overtime, so fatigue most definitely was a factor.
Made even more bizarre by the fact that this was Pepperdine's first conference win OF THE SEASON.
My only question is that the player who swung his elbows never made contact with the player..
also the winning bucket was shot by Michael Porter Jr's little brother, just another small tidbit.
@@seroogyw6238 excessive swinging of elbow can be called without contact. If he made contact with his head it's an ejection and possible suspension.
To even get to the first OT was insane in the first place. Show that part too. This whole game was crazy

Indeed
It would if been crazier if he didn’t get it off in time
@@hooplahoopla11 No, it was crazy because he did get it off in time. If he hadn't gotten it off in time then no one would've cared. Game winning buzzer beating shots are the peak of all craziness

Agreed. But they got it right.
@@charlesloftis2920 oh yes for sure. They earned that game’s paycheck
Except that after a flagrant foul the resulting possession inbounds from the side at halfcourt, regardless of where on the court the foul occurred.
@@mattwilliams222: good catch.
@@mattwilliams222 100% correct. Since they determined there were .6 seconds left on the clock when the foul occurred against Pepperdine, the elbow by the Portland player has to be ruled a technical foul. Pepperdine should’ve been given the ball at half court, not right under the basket.
Moral of the story: hit your free throws!
Or dont...throw elbows...
Or don’t foul when you’re up by 3 and the opponent is going for 2

Heres a story... Back when I was in high school. We had a game where we were up 3 with less than 10 seconds to go. The other team called time out and the play they drew up out of it was a guy getting a screen for a layup. This is basically what the guy did in this video. Going for 2 while down 3 on a final play is stupid. I was on him, and when I saw him running in rather than taking the 3, I literally just stayed back and watched him lay it in. Then the ball went through the net and bounced on the floor a bit, a teammate of mine picked it up and i remember running up to him yelling "hold it, hold it, hold it.". He held it, the clock ran out, and we won. At the time the clock ran after makes in high school unless a timeout is called. The other team must have not realized this.
Understanding how to handle these crunch time situations and the final plays of basketball needs to be as ingrained as it is for baseball players to know where they are throwing it if the ball is hit to them. Yet, so many guys just aren't taught these at the AAU level it seems and we get boneheaded game enders like this. This video was very entertaining, and hopefully the next generation learns not to make these mistakes.
#12 with 2 of the dumbest plays ever to cost his team the game. Contesting the layup with 2 seconds left when up 3 resulting in foul and then getting the flagrant after the whistle giving Pepperdine the free throws and ball.
Reminds me of an HBCU game I saw about 40 years ago where one of the teams was up 1 with the ball late (this was in the pre-shot clock era), committed a turnover, the other team scored to go up 1 and then the first team drove the lane, put up what appeared to be the game-winning layup... and was called for a charge as time ran out. Lost 98-97. Until now, that was the strangest ending I'd ever seen.
Wow that’s crazy was it a good call?!
@@Yoloyolo69912 It seemed to be. Block/charge calls are always a matter of judgment, and this one was on the borderline. It wasn't an obvious mistake by the ref, in any case.
Pre-shot clock
98-97
Yeah, I don't think so
HBCU’s aren’t real programs. They exist out of the goodwill of Congress and are an antiquated vestige of the pre-Woke era. Their admissions policies are neoleftist and borderline rac*st.
Damn you old
This game is my mini basketball scenario
Complete lack of understanding of how to finish a close game on display here by both sides.
I lost bits and pieces of intelligence watching this video... don't foul up 3 when it's a clear layup, don't swing your elbows and get t'd when the game is over, make your free throws, and don't let them inbound to the middle of the floor with .6 left!
Great point about swinging the elbows. That Pilot player overreacted, in my opinion.
Wiat now youre making us lose intelligence lol If the game is over ....they shouldn't be able to call a foul ..... 😂 women refs gotta love em
This is Classic American Basketball 🏀. NBA on the 80's and 90's were like this
Not a good call by the officials. The attempted elbow was a response to the Pepperdine player holding the Portland player waaaay past the whistle. Offsetting technicals or a no call would be correct. That and an extra T for the Pepperdine coach running all the way across the court.
Portland got screwed. That "and one" call was pretty bad. Very light contact. Poor call. Also, there is no way there were 0.6 seconds left when the foul occurred against Pepperdine. The ref's hand doesn't even start to move up for the foul call until .02 or .01. Pepperdine should have only had a tap option on that last play. Also, why no tech on the Pepperdine coach who raced more than halfway across the floor?
Tony C: I agree Portland got crewed. The flagrant foul called on the Portland center was a ridiculous call. The Pepperdine player instigated the foul. The Portland player controlled the rebound. At that point, the game was and should have been over. Truly poor officiating by the on-court officials.
Agree. Plus the contact foul on the portland guy who wasnt being let go of.... and who made no contact
This is the bizarre finish that a game between two bad teams merits
Gotta make that free throw, Mr. Perry.
remember kids, practice your free throws!
Lights around the backboard is the best innovation in basketball since the removal of the peach basket!
Except that what matters is when the ball left the player's hand. Maybe they should make the players all wear wristbands that light up when game/shot clock expires.
The scoreboard change delay was so long that the scoreboard couldn't even believe it
I don't understand why they continued the game after the double foul, since clock already ran out before the swing. I understand freethrows given to both teams, but where did that 0.6 seconds come from?
There was a foul on Pepperdine with 0.6 seconds left
Gotta keep your cool there with dude from Portland, Pepperdine player definetly did too much holding on to him and the game was over, cant react like that though
Why didn't the pepperdine player just let him go though? I mean ultimately he got the last laugh though
@@mattj9163 he couldve either been trying to get a jump ball and make it seem like his hands were on the ball. Or just trying to make it clear to the ref that hes trying to foul
"and the game was over" - Except that the common foul occurred with 0.6 seconds left, which is why they resumed from there after the review.
@@mattj9163 I honestly think he might have been hunting for a reaction from the Portland guy. Otherwise, I think he would have reacted to getting elbowed in the face. He got what he was looking for and embellished it to make sure he got the tech.
The game was over but the chick ref had money in the game so she did what she had to lol 😂 😂 women ref in sport's are hilarious
1.3 seconds left, clock start when ball hits the rim? ball hits the rim , pops up, comes down, player rebounds, player is fouled in just .7 seconds? really? they are going to pretend the clock didnt run out?
What a crime that there was even time on the clock. Dude had the ball and was huddled. Just a shame how it all unraveled somehow
Crazy ending at the Pacific Coast Academy (old people that watched Nickelodeon will get it)
Probably the worst heads up basketball of all time from both teams lmao

What a sport basketball is!!!!
What a weird chain of events. Why did Pepperdine get the ball at Portland's end of the court?
Every flagrant foul not in the NBA gives possession where the foul occurred
Flagrant foul but stupid purple dude throwing his elbow. Lucky he didn't connect
The penalty for a dead ball contact technical foul is 2 free throws and the ball at the nearest spot.
@@TheMjphoto45 to be fair the refs shoulda did something the guy was holding him for a good 5 seconds and the refs shouldn't of let that happen to begin with
That is not correct. The inbound comes from halfcourt on the side. This is true in high school and NBA so I assume it would be in college too.
All the joy and excitement gets taken away at the end because of the officials. They blow their whistles like cops and then have to go to the replay looking at it on the subatomic particle level. Taking another ten minutes. No more joy, we all sit
This whole thing is so crazy. My head aches.

Somebody explain it to me. Technical came after the buzzer. Game was over. No foul.
First foul was with 0.6 seconds left after the miss freethrow... clock operator didn't stop the clock when the ref blow the whistle... hence why 0.6 was put back on...

They were ready to give the player a technical but what about the coach on the court screaming at the ref. If they are going to be handing out technicals like that, give the coach one too and let Portland shoot 4 free throws
What do you mean "like that"?
100%. Coach wasn't even the head coach. At least I don't think he was. It is totally a technical foul. The whole thing was a mess. Poor plays by the players, and clearly poor coaching by both coaching staffs. The refs actually seemed to do a good job in a tough situation.

Why is nobody talking about how this was also in DOUBLE OVERTIME
And why no technical foul on the pepperdine coach? He ran flat out onto the court to confront everyone.... this was POORLY handled by the refs
You just can't sell me with the NBA, man. College ball is the shit.
Nuts that the refs called a technical when he didn’t touch the other guy with his elbow, but especially that the Pepperdine coach didn’t get one for running onto the floor to yell at the refs. That’s supposed to be an automatic technical
? there can be technical after the game ended?
There was a common foul that was called on Pepperdine with 0.6 left
That doesn’t begin to match the final seconds of the NC State win over Houston in the NCAA Championship game of 1983.
The west cost tournament will be outstanding.
For once the title in this video was spot on, that was a wild finish.
Just how they drew it up 🥴
Some of the dumbest basketball I've seen in a long time. Pepperdine needs a three but drives for a layup with 1.3 seconds left. Wow, not smart, but wait, Portland fouls him. Unbelievable. Why foul? So now there is a foul on the missed free throw, basically game over. Hold on, the Portland player swings his elbows. Just brilliant (not). Doesn't matter if the Pepperdine player held on too long or not. Only one way Pepperdine can win the game and Portland gave them that way. They deserved the loss!!!
how about at 2:00 when he high fives his ghost teammates LOL
All five people in attendance stormed the court.
Anyone else read that as Pepperoni?
That peppermint dude trying to hug fuck the portland guy was the best play of the game, literally won them the game.
The dissecting of the clock by the refs in the last few seconds of this game was a crime. There is no way the that the free throw miss and subsequent foul only took 0.7 seconds.
You think it took more than 0.7 seconds? He gets wrapped up immediately after getting the rebound.
0:59 you're welcome brothers
Both head coaches should be fired. Neither one knows anything about basketball.
Last year I sat next to the Pepperdine coach on a plane and he’s the nicest guy. Told him I’m on that Pepperdine train! Was pretty cool for me at least.
After Pepperdine #0 makes the first free throw at 1:57 he steps forwards and acts like he's slapping his teammates fans despite no one being there. I played basketball competitively and watched it my entire life and have never seen this. Best guess is he's taking the free throw routine thing to an absurd level??? So weird.
Worst referee call ever. By the time the Pepperdine foul was called the clock was finished or at worst there was only .2 seconds left. Portland was robbed.
Anyone else feel like the pepperdine player who would not let the Portland player go, even well after the play was over, thus provoking a response from the Portland player, was rewarded by refs for his antagonism? Shouldnt he have been called for a technical foul too for just hanging onto someone for no reason well after the play was over? Or am I the only one?
Yep

The lady ref got a little baggage back there in the trunk😉
The timer guy fell asleep on that play.
The Pepperdine player that grabbed the Portland player after the whistles had been blown and the referee had called the play over. By game rule should’ve been called for a foul on Portland. Because doing just that is unnecessary when the game is over. But 90% of referees in basketball in the US right are not held accountable for wrong calls because they “don’t get paid enough to care”. 😭😭 (such a bs excuse) But honestly I think the Pepperdine player knew the refs were incompetent so he passively bear hugged him until his opponent got mad and used aggression. So honestly a smart play by that kid.
Title of the video lives up to its billing and then some!!!
Thank God, that elbow didn’t connect
That buzzer beater was lucky but awesome at the same time
You'd think Pepperdine is a rich enough school to get better broadcast audio cause jesus christ....
So - is basketball like soccer where there's extra time? Cause clearly the tie up of the Portland player happened at 0.00. You can see the scoreboard in the background. Game over. Regardless of the penalties - they happened AFTER regulation. What am I missing here...?
