Roland TR-8S Drum Machine And Denon SC5000 / X1800 Prime Midi Sync Demo

  • This is purely a demo to show the potential application of 3rd party drum machines and other midi clocked hardware with the Denon SC5000 & X1800 Prime setup.
[Discalimer] There is a huge mixing error as I did not check the BPM of the incoming track, but this was not supposed to be a DJ set ;)
There are flaws, lots of them, and you'll notice that I often have to re-tap the midi clock button on the X1800 to get the master clock as synced as I can.
While the clock signal is set to the same BPM as the current playing track, it is not phase synced and it can (and does) run away even if your BPM is off by a fraction.
I think the integration could work perfectly well for build-ups and transitions, but it clearly (as you see) is not really ideal for consistent play.
Let me know if you'd like to see more of these, or a setup tutorial etc.

Boys, glad to be part of such a creative chat! I now have three sc6000Ms and an x1850. I used to use Traktor with my Traktor mk2 controller and the Maschine drum machine, which worked well. In addition, I recently hooked up my Moog subsequent 37 to the Denon's for the first time. Not too shabby. I had to keep pressing the midi sync clock on the 1850 mixer, but synth noises are more forgiving than drums. I'd like to add a drum machine. I'll either use the Tr8 as shown in the video, or I'll see what I can do with the NI Maschine again. I'm also a scratch DJ/turntablist playing over techno, so I genuinely love the Denon M platters. The best of the best! I'll keep you guys posted. I have videos on my channel. Wish each of you all the best in your creative journey! ;)

I love the Roland drum machines, a pity they dont have integrated Ableton Link, like the Akai gear, which now works plug and play with all Denon Prime units (since update 2.0)!

Thank you for this! Any chance you can do a detailed setup howto of this? I have the same setup (TR-8 instead of 8S) and I am just having a heck of a time trying to get this to work.

Rick Collette I sure can! I’ll work on something this coming week, but to be honest there is nothing to it other than routing the midi out to the midi in on the tr8/-8s and ensuring that midi clock is set to send from the x1800. The only pain is that unless you get it perfect on the tap, you’ve gotta adjust it, but I use channel 4 for that.
I’ll pop you a message when the tutorial is up.

@@simondowdles3479 the little nuances of it are missing from every (all three) videos ive found on this subject. It looks like you load a song, press play, press the midi button, MAGIC! :D

Very interesting although the MIDI sync not being perfect seems kind of worrying. I just got a Prime 4 and was wondering if I could add the TR8S to the set up. I found a MIDI-Ethernet cable on Amazon, do you think that it could work?

Hey mate, i've got the same prime setup and was thinking of adding a drum machine aswell, where are you plugging in the drum machine? it seems drum machines output a TRS jack so do you have it connected to your mic input?

    • @simondowdles3479
      @simondowdles3479  3 роки тому +2

Hey mate, thanks for your comment. No, it is not into the mic input, it is simply connected to channel 4 (far right on prime mixer) via TRS to RCA adapters. You will actually notice I play with the volume fader on the channel a lot when I bring in the drum build-ups. I recently switched to the SC6000 M's and will be doing more of these along with some other send/return gear using the RMX-1000 on top of all of this.
I am also going to be testing Abletons new auto BPM detection so that I hopefully never have to worry about the flakey midi support from Denon ever again ;)

@@simondowdles3479 Great work bro. I've got the same setup (SC6000M's/ Tr-8s/ X1850) and am considering Abelton Link to keep everything in time. Have you tried it yet? Results?

@@obiegomab Hey buddy! I have not yet tried it. I am now also on SC6000M's and X1850, with RMX1000 for fx and BOSS DD-8 for delayverb fx. I am unsure if I want to add the drum machine again, but for the sake of fun, I might just!
