Hindustani raga Bihag while borrowed into our Carnatic Music as Behag its initially used only for short pieces and light songs sung at the tail end of the concerts. Of course, over the period of ti me it has been increasingly gaining popularity in the Cutchery circuits too. Its a Janya derived from Dhira Shankharabharanam, 29th on the Mela.scale. Apart from this one- 'Narayana Te Namo Namo' by Annamacharya, other popular krities are -'Saramaina' by Swati Thirunal., Thillana by Lalgudi Jayaraman and the Tamil krities Muruganin Maru Peyar Azhagu by Guru Surajananda, Aadum Chidambaramo and Idu Dano Thillai Sthalam by Gopalakrishna Bharathi. I think that , I have listened the Muruganin Maru Peyar Azhagu a couple of months' back, sung by the young artist S. Swarnathmika. Here Price Rama varma presented a really wholesome recital with a comprehensive ragaalapana and a very novel brief swarakalpana based on rhythmic thala cycle. he prompted the mridamgam artist Vid. Sri. Nanjil Arul n Vid. Sri. Adichanallur Anil Kumar to present a wondereful Thaniaavarthanam wherein the former performed jathis too...Then the latter too followed the suit...Wonderful recital!!!!
