Prince Rama Varma - Informal Concert 2019 - Introduction and Indariki - Annamacharya

  • In what has become an annual feature, Prince Rama Varma brings a magnificent gift to the residents of Trivandrum (and nowadays, to all his admirers all over the world through youtube) each January, in the form of an "Informal Concert" where he brings to light several rare and beautiful compositions by a whole range of composers, from people like Annamacharya and Purandara Dasa who lived 600 years ago, to contemporary compositions, even from the 21st century!
Apart from the songs, Varma ji provides so many wonderful insights into the background of the compositions, the lives of the composers, the meanings of the lyrics and so on, which makes this the top favourite event in the calendar of many of Varma ji's fans.
This year, Varma ji was accompanied by Sri S.R.Vinu, Sri B.Harikumar, Adichanalloor Sri Anilkumar, Payyannur Sri Govindaprasad and Sri Ananthapadmanabhan.
The concert started with the cute little song by Talapaka Annamacharya describing the Dasavatharams or Ten Divine Incarnations of Lord Vishnu, focussing on His golden hands or Bangaru Cheyi.
Varma ji is probably the only non - Telugu and non Kannada speaking person I know, who includes compositions by Annamacharya, Bhadrachala Ramadasa and Purandaradasa in virtually all his concerts.

One small correction - Annamacharya and Purandaradasa though lived during the same period for approximately 19 years, Annamacharya is nearly 76 years elder to Purandaradasa.
Annamacharya lived during 1408-1503, Purandaradasa lived during 1484-1564.
Annamacharya had composed nearly 32000 sankeertanas out of them 12,000 are said to be available.
Annamacharya is quite ahead of his times. He is very progressive in his thoughts, as can be seen from his compositions.
His compositions focused on Bhakti, Philosophy, Vairaagya, Srungara, Folklore, Lullabies etc thus has incomparable range. MS Amma also rendered many Annamacharya keerthanalu.
He is known as pada kavitaa pitaamaha and also famously known as Harikeertanachaarya Annamacharya. Most of his devotional keertanas are dedicated to Venkateswara of Tirumala Tirupati.
Being a predecessor and trend setter with innumerable Compositions, we can safely believe that he has great influence on all Vaaggeya kaaraas including Purandaradasa.
Fortunately some of his Keertanas were well preserved on Copper plates for our benefit.
Information is given not for comparison, but to bring out partly his immeasurable greatness.

His Highness Prince Rama Varma...how simple you are sir.
A versatile musician, how pleasantly briefing the history of information on the concerts that you performs.
A member of the then ruling family who had the right to command to his "prajas" here speaks like an ordinary man and behaves down to earth which shows his civilised nature.
This is what the people called "kudumbathil pirannavan"
I am nothing to comment about the music.

The narration about the composers of all languages is very informative and interesting too. Further I am very happy to know that you are desciple of great Sri Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna. I too started learning violin from one of the desciples of Sri Mangalampalli Balamurali krishna. Due to circumstances I could not continue to do violin. Anyhow I am blessed to listen to your concerts for which I am very fortunate. You are doing a great service to our music with immense devotion and dedication and I hope that you are blessed by all these composers - Sri Thyagaraja Swamy, Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar, Purandara Das, Thallapaka Annamacharyulu, finally Sri Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna ji. Please don't mistake me for the reason that it is not an exaggeration but it is fact that to be blessed with classical music, these are all the factors (blessings of Gurujis) which favour to become a classical musician.

Madurai Somu, MDR and DKJ used to talk or comment, but not so much and mostly theirs were murmurs. Your diction is clear and is all-encompassing. Koti koti Namaskarams.

    Meaning
It is this hand that protects everyone.
It is the hand of the savior
This hand is not only golden and shiny
it is also beautiful and graceful
It is this hand that searched and brought the
submerged precious Vedas from the sea.
It is also the hand that is holding his beautiful
mate’s chin in order to console her.
He is the one who is embracing ever graceful earth
Don’t be mistaken, it is also the hand that
has sharp long nails which can kill the demons.
This is the hand that begged king Bali for the gift
This is the same hand that gave the entire earth as the gift
This is the hand of the man that bought the sinking
Mandara mountain to the top and held it on his back.
It is the hand that carries all the weight of the universe and
    saves lives from everyday suffering.
It is the hand that saved hundreds of women’s honor
It is the brave hand that rides the fierce horse
It is the hand of God Venkateswara
who is the lord of the sacred place, Venkatachala
that gives the salvation to all the life forms

What a class 'informal recital' while Prince Rama Varma did explain about the constraints to please common audience. He rightly said that there are many composers in every state whose songs were not popularised outside their respective states.
He specifically said about the great Telugu Saint Annamacharya , the 15th-century Hindu saint and the earliest known Indian musician to compose songs called sankirtanas in praise of the Lord Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu . He is the first known composer in carnatic music. The most famous composers of Carnatic music like Purandara Dasa, Kanaka Dasa also came after him. Annamayya's compositions were his floral offerings to Lord Venkateswara and he did praise the deity... described his love for him, even had expressed his sins or faults and put forth apprehensions prior to his total surrenders on the feet of Lord! His songs can be classified into the Adhyaatma (spiritual) and Sringaara (romantic) sankeertanas genres. His songs in the "Sringaara" genre worship Venkateswara by describing the romantic adventures of Venkateshwara and his consort Alamelu, while others describe the Bhakti of his devotees.
In his later keertanas, Annamacharya espoused subjects such as morality, dharma and righteousness. He was one of the first few who opposed the social stigma towards the untouchable castes in his era, with his sankeertanas explaining that the relationship between God and human is the same irrespective of the latter's color, caste and financial status, in his songs "Brahmaṃ Okkatē Paraḥbrahmamokkatē" and "ē kulajuḍainanēmi evvaḍainanēmi". His prodigious literary career earned him a place among the all-time greats of Telugu literature.
Prince Rama varma did sing the Annamacharya Keerthanam - 'Indariki abhayambulichhu cheyi' so melodiously.....loved his rendition! Best wishes..
