    Got a factory five f5 Titan 1" quill stem for an old giant frame that I converted to fixed gear and wanted to keep the look of the quill but wanted more modern 31.8mm carbon drop bars. It a dope stem with an removal face plate. Haha it's expensive tho.. actually spent more on the stem than the frame, but it looks sharp!

    Factory Five actually makes a 1" threaded stem for a 31.8mm handlebar diameter with a 2 bolt removable faceplate. It's like a hundred USD, but if you're like me, and not always rational about the cost of your bike parts, it can be a pretty addition to your vintage frame and fork.

    Hi Zach and Happy B-day! BTW, you are not old. I agree with 95% of this video, but don't agree the threaded stems are "higher maintenance" than threadless. IMHO treadless systems are higher maintenance and more unreliable. The bearings don't last as long and I've seen a few fail catastrophically, but have never seen a treaded system completely fail. Also, you didn't mention tapered head tubes, but a couple of the bikes you showed in the video had them. Not hating, just putting in my $.02 since you usually ask for comments. I think your channel is great and motivates people to get out and ride. As mentioned by another, doing a video on square-taper vs. through-axel bottom brackets could be interesting, also maybe one on the job of a bike messenger and why they usualy choose fixed/single-speed bikes (they always have great stories)

    You can pick up a steep angled stem to get a decent rise on your handle bars. I have very long legs, so I have to use them on all of my bikes to get my handlebars to a reasonable height, even with an uncut steerer tube. (My track bike still has the bars about 10cm lower than the saddle with a short 35 degree stem and a full stack of spacers)
    It doesn't look horrible IMO if you find spacers that match the stem or frame.

    I have a steel frame trekking bike with threadless stem and I want a quill stem so I can raise the handlebars like a Holland bike or Rivendell but the only option is adjustable stem and that is not enough. I am going to buy handlebars with more rise and backsweep. But then I have to lengthen the hydraulic brake cables ( magura hs11)and I wish wished I had deore V brakes because they are easier to lengthen.
    Basically, I bought a nice bike with xt and magura and a threaded stem
    I commute and a comfortable but quality riding position is important. I think the industry is so focused on selling the competition aspects and people buy into it without realizing that a huge percentage of their riding is maybe around town, commuting, shopping and so on. So they buy a bike dreaming about being cool on mountain trails or riding over the Swiss Alps.
    I also was oversold on XT and Magura and to be honest the replacement parts are expensive and wear out faster because they are lighter weight. Standard shimano alivio works for most people and most people don't need 3x10.
    I think threaded is limited. I have seen touring bikes with over built extensions on threadless and it looks terrible. This one guy had problems with it clicking
    Most people are not aware of quill vs threadless
    I learned about it after and threaded is for me more practical

    Quill stems are often used on cheap road bikes and mountain bikes because the manufacturer only does 1 or 2 frame sizes and it allows a good bike fit with a limited choice of frame sizes plus I feel on a road bike in an accident the stem will rotate more easily out of the way. Personally I feel the quill stem is a good option on a road bike where you may want to try different handlebar heights etc but should never be used on a true mountain bike that actually goes off road. This seems a good video for being fair I've seen so many videos where people hate quill stems but there are many pro's to them and helps people get a good bike fit on a cheap bike which surely is a good thing.
    I think it's far more common in my experience for people to have a bad bike fit with threadless. I've also seen people who got back into cycling and at first they had the quill stem quite high to give a very relaxed riding position but over time they gradually dropped the stem height to give a more aggressive riding position which is only possible with quill stems with threadless you'd have to keep buying new parts and because of the fork steerer height may be prevented from doing so without adapters and extenders.

    • @bonzobanana1
      @bonzobanana1 4 роки тому

      @Stevie Blue I've got an old Specialized Sirrus road bike from the 90s and it has a quill stem I guess road bikes moved to threadless later than mountain bikes. I think the industry has learned that by making bikes more specific to their buyer's dimensions they make it harder to resell that bike forcing more people to buy new. My old Sirrus will quickly adapt to many size riders where as my more recent bikes won't. It takes seconds to convert my Sirrus from relaxed riding to more aggressive fast riding, nowadays that would be 2 different bikes for people. So what was 1 bike now becomes 2 or 3 bikes, a win for the industry but bad for the environment. I'm glad Zach didn't just follow so many other videos of criticising quill stems, they are still a fantastic option for fixed gear and other road bikes.

      handlebars are one place I think you need to be extra careful with cheap carbon. The one time I bought one, it makes creaking sounds if I flex it just with arm strength. For pretty similar money, you can get a good quality alloy bar that is probably similar weight, and is less likely to feed you a pavement sandwich.

    I would add if you are setting up a threaded headset, is to add 3-5 mm of spacers, because headsets do wear out and your replacement might have a greater stack height, also of course you have more room for error in measuring your cutting.
