  • I don't do facts and figures in this film- we can all read those! What I do is describe the feel of the bike, good things, less good things and whether it's right for a beginner. We all know this bike can be caned by off road experts, but what's it like for mortals like us?

    Really nice video :) But in my opinion the "background" music was too loud. We bikers don't need music anyways :) We have the engine for that! :D

      Hi Daniel. Thanks so much for the feedback. I was in two minds about the music and wondered if it was more engaging with a sound track. Good point about the only music we need is an engine 😎👍. Future videos will be music negative.

    I have a KTM 890 Adventure R. I took my suspension off and sent it to Moto Lab in Tennessee. The suspension was lowered 2”
    and I still have plenty of ground Clearance. I myself am 5’ 11” and now I am flat foot on the 890. Makes a big difference when riding off road and you put your foot down and can feel real estate verses Air. I am very pleased with my suspension being lowered. I did have to cut the kick stand by 1.5” and my Center Stand by 2”. Love my 890 R. Thanks for the videos

      Thanks for sharing your suspension mod David and thanks for watching. Touratech do a lowering kit was well- it costs quite a lot- funny how we buy a bike, then can spend almost the same again making it what we want! Perhaps we are being taken for fools :)

    Thanks, Alex. Enjoying your videos. Regarding your traction control settings, have you settled on a particular number setting for most off-road conditions? Like you, I’ve played around, but mostly just find the generic road & off-road modes work brilliantly!

    • @advnoobie6061
      @advnoobie6061  2 роки тому

      Hi Kim and thanks for watching. I've played around with all the settings and usually end up just using "off road" mode rather than rally settings. When I do play with rally, I usually set it at 6 as this seems to work best for the mix of terrain I ride ie mud, rock, stones and gravel. This is just my noobie point of view though and I'm sure there are others with more experience who can explain their rally settings.

      Hi Ian and thanks for watching. I’m no expert but have tried lots of different settings and also know lots of people who think the suspension is pretty firm. I ride mainly green lanes which is mud, gravel and lots of rock and stones. I set mine on off-road comfort settings and it feels good. See under the seat for these settings. The key is to get the rear suspension and pliable as possible. Also go for reduced tyre pressure of 28psi front and back though the manual says 26 is ok. Other people I’ve spoken to go even lower on the back but the worry then is the tyre bead slipping. Hope that helps.

    Hi. That was a brilliant presentation and over view. Of the bike, settings and how it rides etc. I must say, for someone who started off road a few months ago, you are extremely competent. You had a 1290, now this 890 and, literally, you are a step ahead of me cos I’m thinking exactly as you did - swap to 1290 for the 890. I’m days away from deciding.
    Did you say you were circa 5’8. Same. Interested why you chose the R not the S and I will definitely value your opinion. Thanks

    • @advnoobie6061
      @advnoobie6061  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Mabs and thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I'm 5'8" on a very good day and with boots on!! I never feel that competent but can feel I'm improving. I like to put a lot of practice in, especially on car parks and tarmac. I also reckon it takes several thousand miles to really get to feel comfortable with a bike.
      I did 600 mile road trip over the last couple of days and the bike really impressed me- it's not the 1290, but it does the job well enough AND can go off-road. I also felt much less tired and achy after doing the journey on the 890. I'd done the same trip on the 1290 last year.
      I chose the R as I knew I wanted to ride green lanes which can be very challenging, I'd ridden one for 48 hours at Sweet Lamb and on a more superficial level, I prefer the look and the image!

What I would like to see is: how wide are the panniers with the new outback motortek pannier rack (you have the latest rack I see) and if it is possible to tie down / compress the exhaust side pannier to make it narrower and create your own "offset pair" (that is if you have 2 x 35...). Hey, what do you think about the suspension for on-road riding? Some people reported that it is to stiff on the road. I'm thinking about getting the bike but realistically drive 80% on the street because there no trails near me, so i will be forced to do a lot of on-road.

    • @advnoobie6061
      @advnoobie6061  2 роки тому

      Really great question and I have an answer. I’ve played with the suspension a fair bit and even on standard KTM road settings it can be a bit harsh. Now, I keep it in a slightly stiffened off road comfort setting and it’s perfect for on and off road. I don’t race people and hate peer pressure and testosterone, but I’m usually at the quicker end when in a group of mates on road bikes! You can really hustle this bike and I love it. Even the TKC 80 tyres perform really well on road. Would
      Probably be even better with some more Road focussed tyres. I’m tempted to get a second set of wheels and have different tyres, but money won’t allow that at the moment.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Trouble with off reading in the UK I’ve found is because its such a small country and its also bursting at the seams with people its hard to find a spot where no one else is you are never very far from another person, once we politically correctly fill the country up to the brim my advice is move to Spain its much better there for off reading or ultimately the USA your not frowned upon there

    You mention you're going to ride an Africa Twin presumably with the Dave Thorpe School, I went on this 3 years ago and frankly it was disappointing they just didn't have the off road facility of say Sweet Lamb also the didn't stream the riders those with zero off-road experience were put with reasonably capable riders, on the other hand I cant speak highly enough of the BMW Off Road Skills set up run by Simon Pavey in Wales, having said that neither the Honda or the BMW can hold a candle to the 890r off-road.
    Have you been in contact with Devon TRF its the best TRF group in the country and could furnish you with lots of help/routes they do a massive amount of work keeping the lanes open and Im sure they would value your support.

      The French and Spanish TET are some of the best riding I’ve done worldwide, most trails in the U.K. are too muddy or knarley knowing what you know now having ridden a few miles off-road, would you stick with the TKC 80s or a slightly aggressive more trail

      No true issues. I e put in 250 mile of oil since the first service. New rear TKC 80 rear tyre at 3300 miles. No more loose bolts since I’ve been checking them regularly. Suspension is better on the softer side for all riding. The only downside I’ve found is long straight motorway journeys are not the most fun, especially with lots of luggage.
