About this Channel: This channel chronicles my journey as a sheep farmer from the very beginning. My primary occupation is in business management. In 2020, I discovered the principles of regenerative agriculture and embarked on a journey with the end goal of building a profitable small farm on 23 acres by 2027. Thank you for joining the journey!

Never even heard of dairy sheep. This great . More health options and more small farm sustainability!
I have alot of issues eating cow milk products, so I have been eating goat and sheep milk products. My local store has a wonderful sheep milk yogurt that is wonderful!
I bought Icelandic sheep last year, I milk them just enough for coffee and cereal and follow the intensive rotational grazing. Icies up until the introduction of tractors were the sole provider of milk in Iceland.
We milked one of our katahdin ewes this year just to keep her comfortable while she dried up because we had sold her ram lamb. Her udder and teats were about the size of goats I’ve milked in the past, so not difficult to milk, and she gave me the creamiest, tastiest milk! The way I describe it is that goat milk has kind of a funky taste compared to cow milk, and cow milk has that same taste compared to sheep milk! IMO, sheep milk is definitely the best of the three! We will be milking all of our lactating ewes next season. 😋
Research "annatto and linseed dairy cows" as a .gov website has cited studies showing the possibility of a rather quick change for the better in the actual fatty acid profile itself, while lessening the overall fat content of a different mammal. All are likely relatable
Love the fact that you don't use corn or soy.
I know someone who feeds their goats the same way you do your sheep.
Great information and video.
For those looking into other milk "specific" breeds,
Lacaune sheep is solid, can handle basically any climate, they have wool but tend to shed from the neck, a French breed that is used in France to make a specific type of cheese.
The Assaf sheep, is mainly a cross between East Friesian and Awassi I recently "found" this one the internet says that it took the Friesians milking ability and the Asaff's hardiness, could be a good option to look into though ive never worked with them.
If you're way up north in the freezing cold it's said British Milk Sheep are the better option, though I can't vouch since ive never worked with them.
When I had livestock I was one of those Katahdin milkers, it works, but it's hit or miss some will produce well some don't. Try and find breeders that have tried breeding for higher milk production, though you are better off doing it yourself, because seems no big breeders want to work on that project.
Have to get my hands on Rachel's book. Sheep milk is the future, there is a reason why China has heavily invested in sheep milk products the last couple of years.
I have an Assaf/Finn ewe and her offspring ewe that was sired by a 100% Finn. 3 katahdin ewes and a young ram that is 85% East Friesian/15% Lacaune.
If anyone ever tells you it's too fatty, tell them to search "annatto and linseed dairy cows" online, and then relate it to other mammals. I'm sure the horses that are tied up in Mongolia right now, awaiting milking, are nowhere near as healthy as those from that civilization's past, when those animals were part of traveling groups which were able to eat along the way. Considering they likely only chose fertile places to camp, as those animals health is what they had depended on to get them any further.
Best dairy sheep ,shed from the neck, to make the birthing--stool dyed with indigo plant to look like the sky with clouds for baby (guileless, not a baby anymore) jesus, lamb of GODHEAD to be born, as holy ghost instructed joseph linage of king david ishi dna to make his children with mary=salome, jude,James,++others

Thanks for this info!
I just had this question 6 hours ago. Thanks for this, i didn't even need to search.
Just received the book, looks great. Sheep are the future. God bless
Wow. This is exactly what I was looking for..she is amazing getting her book
We raise them in North Georgia on 10 acres. Such great animals!
As always, you are a guiding light in dark times. Respect to you and yours. Be blessed, and thank you for being you. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for the video. I've been seriously thinking about milking my 3 Corriedale sheep. This interview has convinced me. Wonderful testimony and information on benefits. Excited about the book.
Oh I love this! I have been wanting to get milking sheep as I want an all-around sheep. Love hearing about this!
Yes they absolutely do need copper
Regarding GMOs in feed and the end product:
My sons are very sensitive to eggs, milk and meat raised on GMO feed (eczema, digestive issues, poor sleep * AKA inflammation*) but when they eat grass fed, non GMO, pasture raised, all of their issues fade away. ❤
I believe it!
Rachel is so passionate about her sheep! Such a great interview 😊
Love the SHOP talk about sheep with these gals.
I would definitely buy her book!!
I live in FL and have had to deal with the barber pole worm. The best wormer I have found is lespedeza. It's a plant, and you can get it in pellet form, and I've never noticed the worms developing a resistance to it. It's similar in nutrition to alfalfa.
I milked our horse. It was very sweet milk.
Like the mongals…awesome
Didn’t they make fermented mare’s milk?
I don't grow sheep, but I have grown businesses whether through SEO, lists, automation etc... I just wanted to tip my hat and recognize your excellent skills, beautiful strategy, great design and impressive application of all things marketing to an industry which I'm sure was starving for you to come along. I'm quite impressed by you from landing an early interview from one of the goats in Mr Salatin to your vertical strategy, squeeze plays to your mission statement and most importantly... to your wisdom and understanding of the financial system. You don't often see rock star business skills riding shotgun to a biblical calling of generational responsibility of back to the land. Not only that, you've done this and mastered that while also learning how to farm sheep and make money from it. This industry is lucky to have you and I admire your courage, dedication and faith. At your age, the sleep sacrifices you've made no doubt were driven by faith and fate. You remind me of myself, but you followed your calling back to the land. Your parents should be impressed, you are an impressive woman.
I’ve never had to use chemicals with rotational grazing. I use garlic with molasses. once in a while
We’re trying the garlic approach next spring thru summer, fall and early winter. Chemicals haven’t worked well for us. Also using copper sulphate with some success.
I am SO EXCITED for this episode!!!!😃😍
Great amount of information!!! Very intelligent! Looking forward to the book:):):)
Great information!
Amazing and exciting interview! Thank you and God bless.
Vitamin B is awesome
Good information and i appreciate the mention regarding health benefits and professional medical advice.
Fantastic video !!!
Just got our first breeding trio of St. Croix sheep for exactly this purpose, so excited!
Beautiful farm❤❤❤❤
Love your videos!!!
Thanks for the video! I have Rachel's book and it is great! I just brought home my starter flock of dairy sheep last week and I am very excited to build a business around them. Your videos are all fantastic.
It was really interesting a lot of information I appreciate it thanks
Thanks!
Som where is the ordering for Rachel's book? I found an entry on Amazon but it says unavailable.
Where to find Lacaune in Canada
Small time Shepard here👋
I have 15 finnsheep yews. Last summer i started hand milking 4 who had only rams.
Most important imo is the temperament of the yew. If you end up spending 15 minutes catching the one sheep who makes 5dl its nice but the one who walks up to you to be milked and only gives 2 dl is better in my books. Also for guys with big hands trying to hand milk, try putting the yew between your legs, bending yourself over the rump and with your right hand milking the left uder and vice versa. Holding the jar with the free hand, right under the udder. Works way better for me when i can use my thumb and forefinger to do the squeezing. Also be patient, first day took me half and houer to milk one, end of summer a couple of minutes depending on the moms mood. Train the sheep and yourself and by God, it will be good 🕊️
I think I heard crushed pumpkin seeds (and also papaya seeds) can deworm... maybe look into it.
So where can people buy sheep milk?? I'm in the mountains of NC.
Sheep’s milk 🥛
Great video.
Just received her book!!! Question.... how are breed percentages determined when crosses are made? Is there a formula? I have a ram 85% EF/15% LACAUNE breeding to 2 ewes. 1 ewe is 75% Finn/25%Asaaf. Other ewe is 50% Finn/50% Asaaf. Thanks.
In my book I have a pull out box explaining how percentages are determined in a breeding up program. When there are mixed breeds like you are describing then we get into more complex math but it sounds like you have it calculated very well with your flock!
Each parent passes half their genes to their offspring. So your 50-50 ewe would give 25-25 to her lambs, 85-15 would be 42.5-7.5 , 75-25 would be 37.5-12.5
ewe 75 would give 37.5 finn/12.5 Asaaf/37.5 EF/12.5 Lacaune.
ewe 50 would give 25 Finn/25 Asaaf/37.5 EF/12.5 Lacaune.
I just got my first East Fresian (Black German) ewe and her ewe. I'm going to cross her with an Awassi/Assaf in the fall.
If I hadn't already informed you to, consider searching "annatto and linseed dairy cows" and relating the findings to other mammals
Did she not mention lacaune :(
Pregnancy brain!! Sorry! Yes Lacaune are a GREAT dairy sheep option!
How can we buy sheep milk??!!??!
I've gotten into arguments about copper. Florida - copper deficient. You have to supplement in some way.
Edit: Her book is on the second printing! I ordered my copy. 😊
You’re such a beautiful woman. Thanks for another great vid!
❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤
What is Rachel's feed recipe again? Did she include beets?
She never gave definitive measurements, but uses alfalfa as a base and adds sunflower seeds and beets :)
I repeat the recipe in my book again but I’m hesitant to give super specific amounts as I formulated my feed mix based off nutritional deficiencies I was seeing in my flock. I may expound on that further in either my next book or in a blog post or both….
@@theShepherdesslove the fresh vegetable addition. I've looked into pyrroloquinoline quinone in angiosperms, and bacteria in contrast; then, after realizing that the bacteria studied were freshly cultured and the fruits/vegetables were likely not freshly grown/picked outside of the lab, considered that pyrroloquinoline quinones are likely in much higher amounts in clean untouched environments and therefore also much higher within freshly picked fruits and vegetables; thusly, the studies regarding those amounts in fruits have likely been botched with ill intent. I believe strongly that these mitochondria reviving nutrients are rife within fruiting nature initially, and if any fruits are eaten straight from bushes/trees, that they will dramatically increase the production and quality of the creatures.
❤😂 very nice work
"I have nipples, Greg. Could you milk me?"
She even talked about milking a cat. Perfect.
👩🌾🐑❣
The people that milk
Katahdin don’t just milk sheep from what I’ve seen.
Most either milk goats or a couple of cows as well as the kat ewes for about 3 months out
Of the year
Soy oil is in so many processed foods now.
🥰🐑
Awassi can be crossed to any breed of sheep
Awassi rams can be crossed but my experience is that Awassi ewes have difficulty being crossed to other breeds of sheep. I’d love to talk about this further with you if you have more experience than me! I don’t own the breed personally, this is just what a few people who own them have told me.
@@whoopsydaisyfarm2820 I truly don’t think the fat tail is that much of an obstacle for non fat tail rams considering sheep and goats will breed through a fence given the chance. If that is the reasoning
@quailjailss do you have experience with Awassi sheep? I am basing my information off experiences shared with me by breeders of Awassi sheep- it’s not conjecture it’s observation and breeding facts shared by a veterinarian who raises Awassi.
Some Awassi sheep have fat tails larger than their udders in the United States. If the rams do not have the genetic memory to move this out of the way, the breeding act will be unsuccessful
@@whoopsydaisyfarm2820 and I’m not sure information coming from Andy Karras would be the most dependable info tbh.
Just have to habe Faith that the Lord is gonna take care of you.
Seaweed sheep & 1 black sheep for noticing copper.
I see you have an account on Rumble... and would much rather watch you there, and on YT... getting more concerned with censorship and the cancel culture reality of 2023
Milked a black angus mix cow.
Milked a dog.
Milked goats.
EMS folks don't all have IBS lol.
