3M Half Face Mask Respirator is the coolest accessory that I've got for a long time. I got the feeling that my throat is sore, and also some respiration issues, especially while airbrushing during the cold winter months. The dental face masks were obviously not enough in terms of quality and prevention of the contaminated air entering into my throat and then my lungs.
However, 3M respirator did the job perfectly and I found it very useful and maybe mandatory accessory to have while airbrushing.
Although acrylic paints are considered harmless, they are still cancerous and one must be very careful while working with them.
Even spraying in a spray booth, in open or partially open area, airbrushing still contaminates the air around you and it is advisable to wear respirator and glasses.
3M have one step lower series - 6 series respirators, which are pretty much the same in price, and I would't hesitate but to get that particular one. It is more comfortable, more pleasant to wear and eventually more safe.
Filters supplied with the masks are consitent of three parts. Two filters and a cap which holds them together. Using the basic filter is usually enough, but especially when airbrushing enamels, I suggest putting the additional pad filter and securing it with the transparent cap for better health protection.
Spare parts from 3M are available everywhere, so this makes your life even easier.
Being the most important, health is something that you don't want to gamble with and 3M products are quite a nice choice to go with.
I strongly suggest using a mask while airbrushing and after I got my 3M 7502, I can vouch for it!

When I cover the plastic filter covers (501) with my hands, I still get air coming in through the exhaust valve. Is this normal?
No. Either something is blocking the valve from closing or yours is defective.
Thats a problem with the design. Its not air tight without filters. When filters are installed it makes a friction fit between the silicon and hard plastic. At least this is the problem for me. Tape your exhaust port shut to isolate and confirm what I am saying.
I bought 7503 mask and neither the handle nor the mask inside was factory wrapped in foil. Only the filters were packed in factory-welded foil. It's normal? Maybe I buy a mask from a return or a previously opened or not original? Thank you for help.
G'day Mitko, I wish you would have pointed out that the 5702 is the Medium mask; the 5701 is the Small mask and the 5703 is the Large mask. I ordered the wrong one from Amazon, but was able to cancel the order just in time. It saved me the hassle of returning the mask to the US at my expense; a costly thing these days. I found the Large size from an Australian dealer so it turned out OK. Cheers, BH

I'd had it all my life and I even went to maths tutors as a kid but nothing worked. It messed up my plans to become an air force pilot but I joined up anyway. I've got this same mask too, it's very professional BUT the filters that you get with it are organic and you can still breathe dangerous vapours through it while air brushing, especially bad with aerosols, so I'm trying to find out which filters you use for aerosols because we're talking about cyanide and in large doses can be VERY dangerous, but there's no information on what OTHER filters work better than the organic ones and I'm struggling

Yes, but you don't need those vapor cartridge filters for that. You can use the white particle filter alone (if you combine the clear plastic holder with a 603 adapter) OR for a simpler solution you can use 3M's round soft filters, that will attach directly to the mask. N95 or P2 would be fine. For example 3M 2025 (Europe).
Its ok to buy the half mask from ebay BUT if the filters/pro filters are from Ebay China they are 100% FAKE WITH NO PROTECTION AT ALL...after several mails with 3M USA explaining what our hobby involves(lacquers/enamels/acetones etc) they told me that MAXIMUM PROTECTION is the compination of 6059 filters / 5935 pro filters .

Yes but you gotta get the particulate filters it will give you guaranteed protection as long as it's sealed to your face and you wear goggles with it

These are really hard to get now. Thankfully I have more than a few. These masks are pretty awesome. They look a bit apocalyptic, but they are actually more comfortable and easier to breathe in than the disposable N95 masks, they last for years, and they have a better seal, more effective. The only problem is that people can't hear you speak while wearing it.

Yes, if you attach an N95 or N100. They are even better than the average mask.
