Bill Gates speaks with GeekWire reporter Lisa Stiffler about his new book, “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster.” In the book, due out Tuesday, he presents an ambitious but achievable plan for saving the planet, including scientific and technological breakthroughs, and unprecedented efforts on a global scale.
Gates’ deep dive into climate issues marks an ambitious third chapter in his life. This is his third book, following 1995’s “The Road Ahead” and 1999’s “Business @ the Speed of Thought.” It follows a year in which Gates was in the public eye as much as ever, emerging as an outspoken advocate on the COVID-19 pandemic and a target of widely debunked conspiracy theories.
He made clear in our interview that his focus remains on global health, but that he’s also investing more time and money on climate change, motivated in large part by low-income countries’ need for clean energy and the reality that they will suffer the worst effects of a warmer planet.
Gates seeks to approach the issue with humility in the book. “I am aware that I’m an imperfect messenger on climate change,” he writes. “The world is not exactly lacking in rich men with big ideas about what other people should do, or who think technology can fix any problem.”
Could the Seattle region’s tech billionaires team up to make a dent in the problem? Gates says he is talking about working on climate issues with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who last year announced a $10 billion Bezos Earth Fund, using his personal fortune to address the issue.

Bill Gates needs to go get himself a biology degree. Life is not an operating system that you can steal. Our problems are loss of biodiversity. There is climate change but there always has been and always will be. It is possible that human emissions have some effect this time but it is possible (probable?) that carbon dioxide is around saturation point at the frequencies it operates at, beyond which it will not cause warming. Even if there is a problem, we have no means of reducing emissions significantly. Renewables are pretty useless because they are intermittent.

It would greatly help the progress of humanity if the time, money, energy was used not for invasions and the slaughter of humanity, but to the better management of the world and the ecosystem. I don't see how we can impact climate change without dealing with water distribution. If 50% of all ppl live near large bodies of water by 2030, how do we get them food and drink to treating waste?
I often look at the water level of the ocean. How do we get water up to the rivers without the salt. We can't just depend on only solving water shortages by drilling down to the water table. These aquifers are shrinking. What kind of solutions are being considered?
We are way beyond the point of just changing a couple of our personal habits.

The biggest takeaway from Mr. Gates has to be a lesson in how to deploy capital effectively, and that governments often fail to do so. Unless we consider that government actors are intentionally bad, we should be able to identify where the government approach fails. Given that we ought to keep both democracy and a free market system, I submit that the failure is a result of the party system. Politicians ought to be banned from organizing into parties.

Dear Mr. Gates,
I am interested in newly developed (renewable energy generation) transmission technology for the energy transition in the soil. Water and air transport (also airspace / helicopters / military vehicles / drones, etc.).

The idea (problem): If you want to produce more power on the output side, you have to introduce more drive power into the gearbox accordingly. This is a problem with increasing the output on the side. It should actually be possible with lower drive power, multiple output-side power increases.
The solution: The problem is solved with the newly developed integral gear technology. You don't have to increase the drive power if you want to increase the output-side power. This creates a unique selling proposition on the market, as there is no applied technology of the same kind that transforms the inertia and resistance forces away. And all the unprofitable contemporary technologies, productions and uses that are dependent on the German economy, the benefit of the environment with the newly developed integral gear technology will be restructured and they will disappear from the world market in a very short time! Integral gear technology will dominate the world energy market. The project is very, very, very big! It's a paradigm shift.
Therefore, I am looking for financial support (funding) from Breakthrough Energy or from Mr. Bill Gates. So that my new renewable energy generation technology must be implemented for the world and the energy industry. Thank you!
