  • Hi Friends!
Weeding this garden was a doooozy!!! It definitely made us realize we need to be more proactive in preventing the weeds from growing in the first place. If you have a smaller garden, It wouldn't take so long to maintain the weeds, but with a garden our size we know we have to do something better next year.
Once we got all the weeds pulled, chopped, and tilled, we decided to implement the product "Preen". This is a weed preventer and is 100% safe and approved for a vegetable garden. It was so easy to use and apply to the soil. You can check it out here:
Another thing I learned the hard way is gardening gloves make all the difference in the world! After hours and hours of pulling weeds by hand, my hands were torn to pieces. A sweet friend bought me these gloves and I LOVE them! They protect my hands but are still thin enough to not get in the way.
if you have any tips for us please let us know in the comments down below. We love ya'll and are so thankful to have you on this journey with us.
    God Bless you!

that's a large garden for beginners. It's easy to get overwhelmed and discouraged when you dive in the deep end like that. Some suggestions...collect all your friends and neighbors Amazon delivery boxes. lay the boxes out flat around your plants, then every time you mow your lawn gather the grass clippings and put them on top of the cardboard. this will smother any weeds that are already growing and prevent future weeds from germinating.Leave a little clear space around the base of your plants. The cardboard and grass will also greatly reduce water loss. Grass clippings work much better than straw because it is tight enough to prevent weeds from pushing up through it. Straw is loose and airy and pretty much provides a perfect environment for weed and grass growth.
And the boxes and grass are almost free. Then in the future start rounding up wood chips from tree trimming services in your area.
Watch the Back to Eden gardening videos. Also James Prigioni is very informative. Don't get discouraged, it's worth it.

mulch your garden with shredded leaves, straw, or grass clippings. you will reduce weed pressure and save time you can use for other tasks.

Also a mixture or soap and vinegar should kill weeds right away but be very careful where you spray!

I use cardboard and mulch to keep down weeds in my garden. It works well for me. But I also don't till after the initial installation of the garden. I've had the same experience with straw as you so I don't use that. I'm curious to see now to Preen is working out for you. I've never used it before it.

Carrots do better in cooler weather. I did them one year in Indiana when the summer was cool and I had a ton.

I’d be so nervous to put Preen around my plants 🤷🏼‍♀️🧐 How are your plants doing now? Sure hope it worked .

If you can…for next year amend the soil. It’s much to hard…even with the rain. They need nutrients

It looks like to me a bug, or bugs had a good meal. Plants attract bugs, and you chose to not treat your plants, so that is the results you get, for not treating your plants. The plants you have attract bugs, and should have been properly treated when planted outside. I suggest you look at each of your plants to see if you have anymore plants that look like what you showed. Some people experience an infestation of bugs do to choosing to not properly treat their plants, so their plant leaves look like yours.
I saw this problem before on the internet from other people's experiences, and you have a similar problem like me as well. I chose to not treat what I had, so now it looks like the leaves are almost gone.
You seem confused to me about pollinators. Flowers are not pollinators. Bees are pollinators. Part of a bee's job is to pollinate, and what I recently learned is that human beings such as yourself can do part of their job.
