  • In today’s episode, I chat with Lauren about my favorite thing as a stylist: the psychology behind the clothes. I asked my Instagram community about the style messages they heard throughout their lives and I work to debunk these style myths.
I was not surprised that the most common style messages people have heard are about money & feeling guilty spending money on clothes. I share that I don’t believe in the concept of an item being “age-appropriate.” I was excited to learn all about the history of the myth of not wearing white after Labor Day.
I also talk about a positive style message - the importance of investing in closet staples as the foundation of your wardrobe. I always recommend investing in the best quality piece you can afford and don’t forget expensive doesn’t equal quality!

My experience: I used to make and sew my clothes from 16 to 42 y.o. Then a nasty separation occured and for seveal years, I bought from thrifty stores. Now I followed Alison for a few years. I'm not always happy about the items presented (plaid shirts etc) but I adapted from what I had in my closet. I cannot stress enough the necessity to have basic pieces to be able to start from there and buil ourselves a nice outfit by adding colors or accessories. One thing i will always apply: no sloppy, frumpy outfit on me even at home. I honor myself by wearing simple nice clothes I can afford.
Another thing: I was a volunteer for an abused women help group for 6 years. I noticed multiple times that when women would come tou our workshops after a separation or a divorce, they mostly didn't give a thought about their appearance. (It's quite understandable): darker colors, shapeless clothes etc. A few weeks later, they were feeling better so most of them would wear colors, put some lipstick on etc. I really feel that our mood is greatly improved when we take care of our appearance for us FIRST.

I grew up very poor and did not have many clothes. Then I married a very frugal man and then I had even fewer. When I got out of that situation and went to college I bought myself a career wardrobe and started working as an HR director. Since then I have trouble denying myself any clothing.
