  • This is something I really struggled with when first starting out, the wall of powder at the store can be overwhelming if you don't have any idea what you're looking for. My hope is with this video you will better understand how to find the powder you can use in a load data manual that will give you the most versatility for your cartridge of your choosing. Please don't hesitate to ask questions about powders I had to ask many people when I got my start and I will be more than happy to help others out!
    Speaking of my experience of how to choose rifle powder for the 243 Winchester .308 Win 6.5 creedmoor 223 Remington and many more. Finding data and how to interpret what powder works best for you bullet selection.

    Excellent tips and information! One minor point: "100 gr 243 slower powder compared to 110 gr 300 Win Mag faster powder"? According to Hogden manual both can be reloaded with H4530, H4831: 243 100 gr starting load 37.0 gr H4530, 39.0 gr H4831, .300 Win Mag 110 gr starting load 72.0 gr H4530, 79.0 gr H4831. Some powders can be used across a fairly wide range of calibers. Reloader 22, Varget also can be used across a fairly wide range of calibers.

    I am on my second 35 Whelen. I reload for it and I always thought faster powder for lighter bullets and slower powder for heavier bullets. The .35 Whelen has turned that completely around. I use a 225 grain bullet and 4064 powder which is fairly fast compared to what I use in the 30-06. I don't have a single book that suggests 4064 powder for 220 grain 30-06 bullets, always slow powder and I don't have a single book that suggests a slow powder for any .35 Whelen bullet. I was surprised but that 4064 sure launches that 225 grain bullet. An average of 2816 fps and not a max load.

    • @craiglacount89
      @craiglacount89 3 роки тому

      Can be significant, can be insignificant depends on the powder you choose. Find out which ones are temperature sensitive and do your load development on days with temperatures most closely matching the temperatures you expect to encounter while hunting. I’ve found that warmer weather has a greater effect on performance than does colder temps. For that reason I always do my load development on days that are 60 degrees or less, when using powders that I know are temperature sensitive.

    Real nice job with the video. You hit a lot of great points, especially the cautionary notes. One thing I would add is that you know you've found the right powder/bullet combination when your load test groups are all really good with the majority of your charge weights. For example, I conducted a load test with my 6.5 Creedmoor using Varget and 95 grain Hornady V-Max bullets. That test ranged from 38.9 to 41.0 grains in .3 grain increments, and 7 of 8 loads shot well under 1 MOA. I've had similar results with H-4350 and 135-140 grain bullets in the 6.5 CM. The same thing happens with all of my rifles. My .243 Win loves IMR 4831 with 87 - 100 grain bullets. My .300 Win Mag likes H-1000 with 200-210 grain bullets. My .300 Weatherby likes Norma MRP with 190-200 grain bullets...etc.

      njgrplr2007 great point! Some guns like their one powder that they don’t care which bullet they shoot. Unfortunately I seem to find powders that my rifles never like! Sounds like you have some experience with finding all those good loads in your rifles!

    One of the fastest powders (Accurate 5744) is used with 405 and 500 grain 45-70 for reduced presure loads. This contridicts your statement on fast powder being good with light bullets.

    • @TheJurgisRud
      @TheJurgisRud 2 роки тому +1

      ...light bullets for 243 Winchester. A powder that is considered fast burning for one cartridge may be considered slow burning for another cartridge. So, fast burning and slow burning is a relative term to the cartridge you're loading for. Powder companies will sometimes describe their own powders as fast or slow burning, but that's in a general context of all rifle cartridges for the purpose of comparing their powders burn rates to each other. This is to help you choose which powders are ideal for your cartridge and chosen bullet weight.

      This is why "powder to cartridge reference lists" exist.
      If your gonna take powders/calibers out of context; 5744 is not even *close* to the realm of powders being referenced in this video. and doing so is *dangerous* for anyone reading your comment trying to learn the ropes.
      If your reloading a certain cartridge you have zero business comparing it to the powder of another cartridge with entirely different dimensions.
