  • These are the the results of testing four types of powder with each powder getting 3 charges each to look for an accuracy node in each type of powder. Powders used in the video are Hodgdon Hybrid 100V, H4350, H4831SC and IMR 7828SSC. Primers used were a combination of Federal Gold Medal match standard or magnum. Brass used was twice fired Hornady 243 Win Neck sized for my rifle. The rifle used is a Tikka T3x Stainless lite. Optic is an SWFA SS fixed 20x MOA scope. This was my first trip with the Boyd’s pro Varmint stock and I am liking the ergonomics of this vs. the factory Tikka stock. All my data was collected from my Caldwell ballistic Precision chronograph and the App available to sort and save different groups.

    I really like this video. I love shooting my 243 with 100gr Sierra bt. I've used two different powders and two different primers. Both work accurately. The powders were IMR4064 and H114, the primers were WLR and Remington 9 1/2.
    All grouped extremely well. Go back to a 243 and try for yourself and see.

    Thanks for sharing these results! H4350 was definitely the winner. If you were doing more with the .243 there would be some good exploring to do within the 1 grain increments. I'm sad that this will be you last hurrah with the .243.

      Well I’m certainly glad to share the info, give people an idea of what works best and perhaps what to avoid. I would definitely explore these in finer increments if I knew I was going to continue research but I wanted to cover as much data as possible in one trip. I think there is a really good reason 4350 is so hard to find, because it works. I was lucky enough to snag another pound at the store today so I think I might use it in the creedmoor now that I’m not so worried about running out once I finally find a good load.

Just in case you plan on using these Hodgdon powders in the future, Hodgdon says the burn rates are as fellows H4350, Hybrid 100V, H4831, IMR-7828. Wishing you many tight groups

    I have used H4831 Win brass that I accurize with Win large rifle primers. They will light up to 48 gr of that powder in my rifles. I have found Nosler 70 ballistic tips to be exceptionally accurate in all my .243s and have shot that powder with 100gr Hornady or 105 Speer Spitzer and 105 A max.. The Hornady 105 A max even knocked over the 500m ram if I shot the silhouette in the right spot. I love the cartridge for target and if you know how to hunt it will harvest all big game. Many hunters than I have fed families since the .243 was developed.

    Hi, Thanks for the presentation
    If I may add some observations, Looking at you target results I can't help but notice that the faster you go the bigger the group. In the past I have found this to be some times indicative to excessive bullet jump to the ogive.
    I noticed that you measure your oal at the bullet tip and not the ogive, I highly recommend measuring to the ogive as an added exorcise as it has given me some great results if long range accuracy is your goal.
    Also, my research seams to indicate that a 100g bullet is right on the end of a 243 1/10 twist capability, at 100g a spitzer bullet is recommended.
    Just my humble opinion.

    • @nelsonbeck1631

      I think you're right that he could dial in a load with higher velocity by playing with seating depth. A 100gr GK BT will shoot fine out of most 1:10" barrels except maybe at sea-level. I haven't tried that, though.

    My 243 likes the Sierra 75 gr. HP . with 44 gr. Win 760 . I've also noticed I get better accuracy with a flat base bullet over a BT . It has taken a couple of ground hogs at what I paced off at 600yds . This was 30 yrs ago and I didn't have a range finder so give or take 50 yds . The cool thing about this gun is factory Win. 100 gr. SP will shoot clover leaf groups at 100 yd. The only load development I've ever done with it was with Win. 760 .

    Are those bullets bonded or are they just standard Sierra? I used Sierra 100gr in the .243 for many years, I also used them in my .270, that gun took nearly 40 mule deer mostly from the Book Cliffs and even a few out on the west desert on special hunts also 3 elk with the .270 130gr Sierra BTS. You can buy all the fancy bonded, etc etc you want. I know they come apart inside the deer, but jacket cutting lung tissue or going through a major artery sure makes for dead animals, right now. It's so nice to watch you rediscover powder and bullets and primers over and over. I reloaded and still do (50yrs), just loaded a few hundred 22-250AI, I'm going to have to throw the weapon away when I shoot it about 2000 more times. It's a Remington Etronx I bought new knowing that it wasn't going to make it as a success. Lucky I bought it and all the primers I'd need knowing full we the barrel would be toast by the end. It's a wonder to shoot, I had it rechamber to 22-250AI, it's accurate and fast but will only handle 55gr accurately. If I want I can get the lightest bullets up to 4400 fps. but they usually don't make it to the targets, lol. I just bought a new barrel from a take off for the 250, it's got a one in 12 twist probably take a 60 gr.. That goes on my model 10 left hand Savage, timed and trued about $4k worth of barrels and work on it, my favorite is the 6.5x47L, I sure wish Lapua hadn't made the brass proprietary they would have made millions more, stupid greedy people.... Go get them and above all have fun... Find a good hunting buddy, life is to short to do the hunting alone. Mike

    • @WestDesertShooter
      @WestDesertShooter  6 років тому +1

      Man a 22-250AI would be super fun with a tight twist like 1:7 I’d try for the 90s! I am not sure if this is a bonded bullet. I am hoping to go smoke an antelope this year in a limited entry draw with me and my good buddy who is the hunter, I’m the shooter so it should make a successful team!

      I just used "On Target" to calculate center too center, it used to be a free program but the fellow wants a few bucks for the program now. I don't remember all the bullets I use on the .243 but all are under a moa. Even the ole' Remington 700 (cira 84' I think). Great little gun for my wife, she killed some nice deer with it. (2-300 yrds). I'm going to try and get out to the desert in the next week or two, if it's not too muddy. nice chatting.

    • @MikeDesertHunterHale
      @MikeDesertHunterHale 6 років тому

      I think .243win is capable of bringing down Mule Deer in the 2-300yrd, no further, not unless you an accomplished hunter, I didn't say marksman there is a difference? No nerves, nice rifle, etc. As for the 22-250AI the barrel is, unfortunately, a 1/14 twist, nothing heavier than 55gr, even with AI velocities. I don't know if I told you but the rifle is an "ETRONIX", I knew this was going to be a problem from the first time I bought it. The primers are prohibitive in cost, I bought thousands when it was new. The only thing I can do when they are gone is take the barrel off, if it's still any good, the stock is a McMillan, but it's got the electronics in the barrel, I suppose I can pull them out and go from there! Otherwise, it's toast .
      I've used 4350 and especialely 4831sc in the 270 and the 243 for many years. The 4831 is beautiful in the 270, very soft recoil. I hated fast burning like 3031, to much of a crack when fires, hard recoil and poor results, I know lots of people liked it, just not me. velocity was down a little, accuracy was great, I used CCI-250's in the 270 with H4831sc especialy in very cold wintery weather. Groups with the .270 using a factory barrel and after market trigger (2lbs) were running .47", not bad for an old Remington LH700, enough, Mike

    There are so many things I would like to say. But only have scratched the surface. Your talking long range. Long Range is more like bench rest shooting. First once fired brass from the rifle, Indexed to chamber (243 at top).Trim all cases to the same length. uniform all primer pockets. Deburr all flash holes. Neck sized brass and chamfer. Set cartridge length so the bullet is .002 off lands. I used Remmington large rifle 9 1/2 and Remmington match primers, the match were better. IMR 4350 weighted by hand. The bullets were Sierra 100gr spitzer #1540 square base, best for 100yrd. I also loaded the Sierra 100gr spitzer #1560 boat tail, it still had a little wobble at 100yds. With the square base bullets firing 7 three shot groups. The largest was .219 inches. This was measured the across the two furthest holes then subtracting the bullet diameter. This gives you center to center. The smallest was something like .119. This was on a wind less day about 25 years ago. I used a bench and sandbags. My first gun a Remmington Model 700 ADL. I bought it about 1969?

I've found the most accurate charge in my Remington 798 (a Zastava Mauser-actioned rifle private-labeled by Remington from 2006-2008) to be 40.0 grains of IMR 4350 and a COAL of 2.655". With this load, the gun is a pretty consistent 3/4 MOA shooter, if I do my part.

I'm a little disappointed this isn't published anywhere.

      @@oldmanSturzl this is what screwed Remington back when they first introduced the .244 and had 1 in 12 twist barrels. It handled the light 65 to 75 grain bullets fine, but Winchester already had the market using 100 grain ammo in their 1 in 9 twist rifles....
      My Rem 700 .243 made in 1968 has the 1 to 9.125 twist rate and works well....Tikka obviously didn't learn from Remington's mistake.

      I do believe that's the same rifle he is shooting. But if you're on Facebook several good groups on there to learn

      Danie Vihtavuori shows plenty of data for N550 powder, but only for various 90 gr bullets. You can put a 87 Gr bullet in place of a 90 Gr, it’s only 3.3% different in weight, plus your pressure will be lower.

      Philippe FRATER yes they were a big part of choosing a long range round is standard deviation. I would give up some accuracy to get more consistent velocity. But I also consider how easy it is for me to get Components. Like I mentioned some powders are hard for me to get a hold of

      West Desert Shooter The thing here is that for me in France i have to deal with different types of powders. Anyway, i'll use the same aproach for my load dev. I'll have to do it for my 222rem and the 243win of course, that means differents powders and primers i think.
      Any advises?

    How does removing a shot from the group give a more accurate representation of how the gun is performing? That doesn't make sense.
    If that's how that load shoots that's how it shoots.

    Why don't you drop the charge weight onthe hybrid and give it a fare shake. It has a very similar burn rate to 4350. I bet you a dollar if you shoot 38-39 grains you won't be able to tell the difference between the two.

      Hi from Australia. I enjoyed your video, and would love to know the powder and charge weight you use with 87 grain vmax if possible. Cheers

    I have had great success with Accurate 2700 and a 95 Grn Nosler partition. Loading info is in the Lyman loading manual.

    Why would you go through all this work knowing you are going to tear apart the gun and put on a new barrel?
