Talk To Me | The HORROR of Peer Pressure and POSSESSION

  • Talk To Me is an amazing horror film where teens use possession as a new way to party, but the lore of the film and deeper meaning are so much more than you could have imagined. And if you've seen this scary movie then you know it can be very confusing when you try to think on it. So just let me do the thinking for a little while and you can let me know afterwards if I figured it all out for all of us or I have just lost my mind like Duckett.
    Also if you're reading this have an extra blessed day, trust me you will need it will all the possessions going on around here.

    One of the most striking elements of this movie is the cell phone prominence, and social-media factor.
    Many people may have not even noticed it, but many modern films attempt to take cell-phones out of the equation altogether. So they take place in the past, or in a remote location with no cell service.
    But this movie keeps them in the mix, and incorporates them into the story.

    • @MFLimited
      @MFLimited 4 місяці тому +2

      I wonder why that is. Are they just trying not to date the movie? In the future, people walking around with certain iPhones is going to be like men wearing flares in the 70s.

    • @drownthepoor
      @drownthepoor 3 місяці тому +7

      @@MFLimited I don't think it's about dating the film, but how much it affects the situation you're in.
      You have a phone which means you can call for help from police/etc.
      It also means you can capture photo/video evidence of something rather than have no one believe you. This is something people today would do instinctively.
      It also means you can figure out problems you might get stuck in.
      It's a major foil for story-writing in general.

    The other core theme is not having anyone to talk to. It's in the title. Contact starvation. She can't talk to her father, her best friend is always in her phone, and her surrogate little brother... well. Mia becomes increasingly isolated and desperate for connection, just like the spirits that eternally wander alone in the darkness except for these brief moments someone contacts them and let's them in. The spirits' euphoria of starved connection is the high these kids feel when using the hand. Mia is desperate for contact, which makes the ending that much more brutal.

      It also makes her a much easier target for a dark entity to exploit because her defences are so low, and she’s so alone. Same for the kid brother, who is also alone, with mom working, snd his sister wrapped up in herself. She is often mean to him so much that he too is lonely. The opening scene where his mom can’t get him and his sister isn’t picking up, the friend is the last resort and comes to pick the kid up That scene where they’re both singing is poignant because it shows their potential to be happy which makes this film harder to swallow, we are already invested in them above all of the other characters. Great movie

    Regarding cults and satanism which are mentioned near the end of the video and in the movie respectively - satanism is often referred to as 'the left hand path' which was due to lucifer being the left hand of God before being cast from heaven in Christian mythos, left handed people were often beaten in Catholic schools until they'd submit and learn to write with their right hand as the left was associated with sin. The hand in the film is the left hand which could give some credence to your interpretation. Cool channel, glad I found it!

    i like ur theory on why riley got better but i’m thinking he didn’t like “instantly get better” but that time isn’t linear for the dead hence riley being put back into the hospital bed we actually don’t know how much time has passed. So i’m still partial to thinking that since riley isn’t super bonded with the hand like mia his body kicked off the spirits over time

    • @PolterGibbst
      @PolterGibbst  11 місяців тому +4

      For sure. From the behind the scenes Riley had to wear a ton of prosthetics for most of the movie and left most of it on for the second half of the movie.
      So I'd guess at the end right after the car accident is why we see the back of him more than anything, that way he could finally get some relief.
      But luckily it still works well because of wha you just said, time gets really weird at the end. I mean the hand ended up at a different party and there's no telling how long that took.

    This movie had a very smart concept and awesome ending. I was worried about how they'd explain there's this hand being passed around among teenagers at parties, because it's basically proof of the supernatural. You'd think that kind of relic would end up being on TV and studied by scientists, but it's being passed around different teen friend groups. But in the end they just didn't address that, which was probably better than actually explaining it.

    What if the plan of the bad spirits that presumably created the hand is to literally and figuratively go viral. Videos of the possessed are probably shared all over the world now, and let's be real there's plenty of very reckless and very curious people who want to try the ritual. Heck, they might even create their own hand to complete the ritual.
    What better way for a cult to spread and cause chaos than this? They don't even have to actively recruit people, victims come to them.

    I just had a horrible realisation that Riley would have recognised Mia's mother and probably would have told Mia right away. Of course the movie makes it obvious later that it never was her, but it was obvious from the outset if you think about it. Mia, and we as the audience, are so caught up in the emotion- wanting Mia to talk to her mother and get closure- that we missed this very simple and logical fact :(

    Tying this in with Jacob's Ladder a little bit, the spirits that would want to get close to the living are the ones who haven't accepted their deaths. I imagine they would do horrible things if it meant they could touch life again. They would be the ones who were functionally damned and in torment. Not the nice kind of ghost. To them, the hand would be a much more powerful drug or narcotic than it would be to the living.

  • @peanut_butter_wizard1213

    My theory about the ending is that since only Mia and Riley went over the time limit, they were the only ones who suffered from 'long-term' possession of two different spirits in the hand
    Since the spirits can't seem to do any poltergeist-type shenanigans like throwing plates around and messing with the lights, only influence the person they're holding on to with hallucinations or in extreme cases like Riley's (since he went over a lot longer than Mia) taking some physical control, and Riley was taken straight to the hospital, a place where he can be restrained and sedated if needed mean the spirit in him can't do much as the connection decays on its own
    But the spirit that latched onto Mia could only make her hallucinate, which made her more dangerous, since she could be tricked into kidnapping Riley. I think the spirits ultimate plan was to trickia into killing Riley, and then use that to push her to kill herself, trapping both of them with the Hand
    And my first thought during the climax was that Jade pushed Mia in her moment of hesitation in order to protect Riley, but i think it was supposed to be ambiguous on that
