Spraying Paint or Finish Correctly: HomeRight Finish Super Max

- I used rattle can spray paint for most of my scrolled lettering projects. However, it can get pretty pricy when spraying larger pieces. Also, while the number of colors of spray paint available is growing, sometimes I simply need a color that isn't available. I reached out to HomeRight about their Finish Max Super spray I had heard great reviews about in the maker community. They agreed to send me one to test out and review. This video contains my honest thoughts about this sprayer. They did not pay me to endorse their product or to leave a favorable review.
If you want to order your own, use the link below! I provided Amazon Affiliate Links to some of the other supplies seen in the video.

Thank you so much! I'm painting a crib for my friend and I'll be using my HomeRight sprayer for the first time. Of course, I've been procrastinating because I was nervous about screwing it up. Your video is exactly what I needed! You've explained the sprayer's functions so clearly, and given such essential tips, my apprehension is annihilated. I'm tremendously grateful and ridiculously excited to go get this crib finished! Thanks, TightWad!
This sprayer would be perfect to paint the tiny details on a crib! You’ve got this! Just use light passes so you don’t get runs.
@@TightWadDIY lol love the sprayer! However, I don't think I'll use it for a crib again. I've heard many times that sprayers use more paint. Me, the novice painting a crib, wasted a crap ton of paint between the slats. I thought about stagger stacking to fill the negative spaces, but I didn't. The paints in using are very expensive, and I think I would have used a fraction of it if I'd brushed instead. However, I'm REALLY looking forward to painting the 78" tall entertainment center in converting to a Bourbon Bar... then a dresser, cedar chest, gentleman's tall boy... lol-- totally going to get my money's worth!
@@cicibabii08 I can agree you might use more paint. I think you have to weigh the cost of your time as well. It would take a lot longer to paint a crib by hand! I’m glad you got it done though.
Always be sure to sweep your arm perfectly parallel to the workpiece. If you spray in any arc, you are loading more paint or finish to the center and the coverage is much thinner at the ends.
Excellent video! I make cornhole boards as a side gig and cover them with Polycrylic via a foam brush. I've always wanted to switch to a sprayer, but my ignorance kept me at bay. You answered pretty much all of the questions I had. Thanks!
Pat Traynor I have a friend who makes cornhole boards and uses Polycrylic. He is actually the one who talked me into getting this sprayer because he loved it so much. You won’t regret it!
@@TightWadDIY I hope not, because it's being delivered tomorrow! :D
No not a great video. He's not spraying straight across the piece keeping constant 90 angle. Instructions clearly say not to do that and anyone who's ever sprayed any paint know this.
I just watched another "how to" video on how to use this particular sprayer and it was a nightmare ! Your video is definitely more informative. Thanks for sharing !
ian t Was the other one saying they didn’t like it? It is so easy to use, I can’t imagine someone not liking it.
@@TightWadDIY she liked it, but her instructions and "tips" were confusing. The video has over a thousand views and has 8 likes and 6 dislikes. After i saw that, i knew i wasnt the only one he watched and didnt care for the video.
ian t Gotcha. I am a teacher in my day job so I would like to think that my instructional videos are helpful. I appreciate you confirming that.
These projects turned out great! Thanks for reviewing the HomeRight Super Finish Max.
HomeRightTV Thank you! I truly enjoy doing it.
@@TightWadDIY Mine in the second use, just stopped and not working anymore. This product is disposable. Only good for one use!
@@holaamigos5228 I had a feeling that was probably the case ..... decent sprayer for a few projects and then kaput .....
I'm a newbie with my new Homeright super max sprayer but have loved it thus far. I want to use polycrylic for a dining set and this video was awesome! Tyvm
Good to hear you’ve liked yours too. It sprayed polycrylic really well for me.
You are an excellent teacher! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.
Thanks! I’m actually a school teacher in my job job. I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
@@TightWadDIY I thought so! :-) I am a school teacher, too.
He didn't follow the instructions, but sure excellent teacher
This was a very thorough and detailed review. You covered pretty much everything I had questions on. I ordered this a few minutes ago 👍
That’s awesome! You won’t be disappointed!
Beware. Mine in the second use, it just stopped and not working anymore. This product is disposable. Only good for one use!
Thank you for the info and video. I'll be purchasing one very soon.
It has been great! My father borrowed it to spray his front door and was impressed also.
Thank you for your great explanation! This helped me a lot.
Also here in Ga, close to Amicalola Falls, been thinking about buying one of these......great review
I’ve used it on several products and even let family members borrow it since this video. It works really well and they all loved it.
Excellent video. I saw in your comments below you are a teacher...no wonder this video is so clear and informative! (My daughter is also a teacher, and she's my go-to person whenever I need something explained clearly :) I was wondering about having to thin paints; good to know you didn't need to.
I appreciate the kind comments. It really depends on the paint. I recently used a high end cabinet paint from Sherwin Williams and thinned it by 10% after the first coat came out a little thick.
@@TightWadDIY Good to know. Was it their Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel? I'm only asking because I plan to use that in the future.
@@marciasiegel6062 That’s the one! It still sprayed without the water but definitely sprayed better with it.
thanks for the tips. this was helpful. i got one and only used it once so far. I did get really nice results on a steel door I painted. not sure what the different nozzles are for, though. i'll have to actually read the directions maybe. haha.
Yes! It’s a great sprayer!
Great video TightWadDIY! Looks like a big time saver.
c JPalm It definitely is.
I’m surprised you didn’t thin your clear at all. I’m always worried about my clear being too think coming out of my sprayer.
Thank for sharing great video. I’m going to have to get one of those 😊
I love it!
Thanks for the tutorial You answered my ?s It's now $23 a quart 😔
Yeah it’s crazy how expensive it is.
I bought the graco 360 and it doesnt spray good for cabinets . For walls yeah. Small pieces I dont recommend. This homeright sprayer is cheaper and seem to do a better job. The sprayer seem to be consistently smooth
That’s good to know! Thanks.
Nice videos on this Homeright. I have the same one and I have a project to spray a dresser red and them black accent. My question is, should I worry about overspray and build a paint booth? I have a garage and want to do it there but worried the red chalk paint may get everywhere. Do you have a suggestion or am I just paranoid about the overspray? Thanks for your awesome videos! BTW, I do not have a yard. I live in the city.
I think you are right. The overspray will probably make a mess painting indoors. At minimum i would use a really large tarp.
Just ordered one and my first project is a chalk paint on a book cabinet. I really got it to do my kitchen cabinets. Your video has been the best so far with the using primer and latex. i will be using a oil based primer on the cabinets so I'm not sure if I want to put that in this sprayer. I concerned about cleaning oil based out of the sprayer.
I know people have put oil based in this sprayer but I just hate cleaning anything after oil base.
Amazing...it ONLY needs POWER....NOT Paint....WOW this is a miracle machine!!!!!!
stirlingfromla Hardy har har...
Should you not be using an inhaler and perhaps safety glasses?
It’s possible!
Great video
Dan Maciosek Maciosek Thank you Dan. I have used it several more times since I posted this video. It is a huge timesaver and provides a great finished product.
@@TightWadDIY I ordered one. Hope I am as lucky
I bought this and used it on water and worked perfectly and few minutes later i used it on paint and the motor burned out, i was using it for the first time on paint
Did you reach out to the company? Hopefully they took care of you.
Is Home right super sprayer better than similar priced Wagner?
hello Tightwad thanks for the video. I am about to use mine for the first time. Have you learned if there are any types of paint you SHOULDNT use in this sprayer?
I haven’t found any. They are very responsive though if you send them a message.
it comes with a manual, read it!
What nozzle you used for the USA map’s late primer and paint?
Great video! My two year old really gotta kick out of the chipmunk voice lol
Haha. I usually edit them out! I’m glad it got a smile. Haha.
Exactly what name and model number sprayer are you using.
He said right in the beginning
How does this compare to an expensive turbine system? All the reviews seem solid. I’m just wondering what we’re missing out on from a high end 5 turbine Fuji sprayer.
Steve Hiemstra I’ve never used a high end sprayer. I’m sure there are benefits but this one does exactly what I need it to do. I’m not painting fine cabinetry.
Did you thin any of the products you used in this video? When spraying the US pieces, was this primer only OR a latex paint with primer combined? I see people thinning and not thinning products (paint, poly, etc) when using the sprayer...?
I haven’t thinned anything I’ve sprayed yet. I would probably thin oil based paints and varnishes but this lower end latex paint sprayed fine without thinning.
Do you clean the sprayer between coats of the same paint? Or only clean after the last coat?
Only after the last coat.
have sprayed oil based paints and did you have to thin it down for that sprayer?
I haven’t used oil based paint in mine. I would thin it if I did.
Have you ever used bin water based shellac primer with the sprayer
BIN is shellac based not water based.
What model?
Can I use it to spray clear coat on car headlights?
You can spray any type of paint with it. I choose not to spray oil based products with mine because I don’t want to have to clean it.
what would you use to clean it if you are using oil based paint?
Good question. You would use paint thinner or mineral spirits.
I would use whatever it states on the can to use to clean so you don't end up with residue and ruin the sprayer. Different finishes require different cleaning solvents.
I have been trying to spray the chalk paint by rust o leum but it keeps looking like orange peel. The outer edge of the spray pattern is where it happens, once you're done the whole thing is messed up. How do I fix this? I thinned the paint 7% and once at 10% but had the same issue
It could be the surface you are spraying it on and not the paint or sprayer.
@@TightWadDIY Ive painted plywood, pine, dining chairs, etc but all the same issue.
I always keep a brush nearby for runs or spots that are a little too thick. If you use the brush right it won't leave brush marks at all.
Is this spray gun good for auto painting.
I don’t know because I’ve never painted an automobile.
Can you spray plasti dip with this?
I’m not sure. I’ve never used it before.
Is there no need to thin any materials that you've used? Most videos say it should be done.
Quintin Wiley I haven’t needed to yet. The thickest think I’ve sprayed is latex paint and it didn’t need to be thinned.
@@TightWadDIY Thanks for the response and video. Both were helpful.
You have to thin the paint. I diluted 70% paint and 30% water. It worked well the first time. The second time, imy project was indoor, i was pai ting a wall and it suddenly stop, never worked again. I called home right customer service. They said that if you pass the guarantee time, they cannot help you. So, because it is disposable, just buy and paint as much you can. The second time, most probably it will not work anymore
anonimo hola You are incorrect. I haven’t needed to thin any paint I’ve sprayed. I’ve also painted multiple projects and the sprayer still works great. I know several others that have also used this sprayer for multiple projects.
@@TightWadDIY you are giving misleading information or you never used it properly. Even the instructions tells that the paint must be diluted, I tried to use without dilute and the results irregular color. Paints must be thinner to pass the small opening . This piece of garbage only served once. The second time it stopped while i was paiting and it did not work anymore.
It also comes with NO instructions! You have to figure it out on your own! Goodtimes!
I think mine came with a card with a QR code to a video.
@@TightWadDIY what’s that? God oh mighty! If you can help me with this...
I have the same machine and works horrible
Really? I’ve used mine about 10 times now and I love it!
Masks are so important when vaporizing toxic materials.
this
I feel very disappoint of the home right finish max extra. I used the first time to paint my fence. It worked well. The second time, It was working until suddenly stops and necer worked again. I Think it is a motor problem. I paid 106 dollars w/ taxes for this piece of garbage. It is a bad product and overpriced for a disposable product. I was unable to put a bad review. Amazon blocked my comment.
Whoa❗️
This person is literally on every persons video. Troll much?
Mine in the second use, just stopped and not working anymore. This product is disposable. Only good for one use!
False, I’ve used it multiple times and know several others who have used it for at least a year.
@@TightWadDIY HAHAHAHA, ONLY IN YOUR DREAMS. IT IS ONLY USEFUL FOR ONE USE. THE SECOND TIME IT WILL STOP AND NEVER WORK AGAIN. THAT IS WHY THE WARRANTY IS ONLY ONE YEAR. I FEEL BUYING IT WAS THE WORST DESICION I MADE. I saw videos saying good things about this product, but in reality, this product is a piece of garbage. Dusposable. Even the trigger piece was out of place several times, so i had to stop and put in place several times.
This product maybe can serve to paint a small chair. Or a piece of fence. No more. It is not useful to paint walls. Of course you have to dilute the paint for a better result.
anonimo hola You are obviously very bitter about your bad experience. It you don’t take care of any paint sprayer by cleaning it properly, it will stop working.
Just because you had a bad experience doesn’t mean the sprayer is a piece of junk or disposable. A one year warranty on a $100 sprayer is quite long.
@@TightWadDIY I expected to use the product more tgan once. OBVIOUSLY I AM MAD FOR THIS BAD, CHEAP PRODUCT!!!. People do not paint frequently. I used, cleaned as new, and the next time it does not work. THIS IS A DISPOSABLE MACHINE! BUYER BEWARE OF FULL LIES. THEY ONLY WANT TO SELL! IT IS A REALLY BAD PRODUCT!!
It has 1 year warranty just replace it. I have seen very good reviews for this and will be getting one myself
too much talking very little painting. moreover, with speed motion
Haha. I’m a teacher so it’s in my nature to explain everything. There are many other videos showing this sprayer so maybe you can find one more your style. ✌🏼
@@TightWadDIY Cant please everyone.....you did awesome!!
