  • One of my favorite things to do with guitar is to take a few simple motifs from a great artist's catalog, and really spend some time with them. I'll move the little ideas to different keys, different string groupings, and different contexts - all in an effort more fully absorb the ideas, and then ultimately make them my own.

    When you said “there is weeks work” on one lick, that was really helpful. Sometimes having a reasonable time frame for a reference really is nice so if something does take me a week or a month, I know it’s “ok”. Thanks much.

    One thing I love about Knopfler’s style is his melodic lead style. I wish I could play off of the chords like he does. But I can’t always wrap my head around the chord progression enough to do that.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 роки тому +12

      Yeah! He's a master of playing to changes!
      Start with barre chords and pentatonics, and then add the weirder other CAGED shapes. It's definitely a "lifetime to master" sorta thing, but you'd be surprised how quickly the pieces start to fit together.

    Finally who understands that Knopfler is country player at heart! He may have earned his chops with R&B and developed it for an 80s audience but you see other channels try and emulate his licks from a classic rock angle and it just sounds wrong.

    I love this. Richard Thomson uses all his fingers because first and foremost he was a finger style acoustic player. Me too, though not in that league at all, I'm really taking to this, I have a strat and have trained myself to play pick fingers, but this style liberates me from the pick and the old skills return! I love what you do with these lessons.

    I love that you broke this technique down so well! I’ve been able to approximate parts of it before, but this will help to solidify the techniques for this style of playing.
    I don’t know if this is the proper spot to add this to the conversation, but recently I’ve been trying to learn the Hozier song, Jackie and Wilson. I found out he uses a baritone Gretsch electric to play it, and I was hoping to figure out an acoustic version on a standard guitar potentially. Is this even practically possible in the sense that it would sound right without the lowness of a baritone? I read somewhere that he originally wrote the song in the key of E, and it was too high for his voice, so he dropped the key down after which I thought well maybe I could sing it in E, but I would rather keep it most like his version. I’m sure you have a ton of stuff on your plate, but I thought I’d throw that out there. I’ll keep watching and liking whether you feel like messing with it or not! Cheers!

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 роки тому +3

      Hozier's stuff is great! And yeah, he's always messing around with crazy tunings.
      You might be able to get away with playing the song by tuning one step down to DGCFAD tuning - side bonus would be good for Elliott Smith too!

    Hi Eric, hi guys. At 1:24 i don't understand how you get this dead note. Do you mute the string with your left finger or is it something you do with your right hand ?

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  3 роки тому

      You've basically got it!
      The muting is done with the fret hand finger - it's sitting on the string just enough to deaden it as the other hand plucks it :-)

  • @sagig72
    @sagig72 4 роки тому +1

    Good lesson Eric. Sometimes a bit difficult to see your right hand. When you tilted the guitar to show the right hand, it was better.

  • @tlister67
    @tlister67 4 роки тому +1

    How much work is it to adapt to the right hand technique? I hybrid pick (regular pick and use middle ring). If I had one guitarist to sound like it would be Mark, even though I don’t really want to sound just like anyone. I guess I am assessing if I should drop the pick.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 роки тому

      Hrmmm...I just tried and a lot of the mutes transfer over to hybrid picking (which is totally a cool technique and you should be proud of yourself for being able to do it).
      The only thing that doesn't transfer as well is the downstroke muting of two strings at a time. With a pick, you have to pass a little further through the strings, which slightly throws off the finger snap that comes behind it.

    Hey Eric and fellow Haugenites: I’ve got a great love for fingerstyle electric guitar, but I’m also a pretty horrible nail-biter. My father was a nail-biter and his father before him. There a way to get that seemingly nail-dependent attack with my stubs?

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  4 роки тому +1

      I *think* you'll be able to get 90% there without the nail attack. He uses the pads a lot - the only time the nails come into play are on that mutey down swing, which might sound fine without the crispness of nails.

  • @Saladzingers
    @Saladzingers Рік тому

    Keep coming back to this video, such a great sound. But on absorbing a second time round I’ve realised I can’t tell how you’re muting the string for the percussive part of each chicken pick? Is it deadened at left hand? Other videos I’ve seen have people muting with thumb or index, whichever they’re going to follow up with. (Also interested to see you play muted with finger followed by note with thumb - opposite to many!)

    Is it illegal to do a Reverse Knopfler on the Chikin' Pick? Thumb down first for the ghost note, then pick up for the note. Eric, I'd love to know more about your experience at Berklee, how you feel about more formal music education, etc. I have played guitar for around 8 years (since around 12 or 13) and am considering pursuing music as a career or at least a glorified hobby. As a young person, people often try to dissuade me from this - citing concerns about the music industry and about competition and that sort of thing. It'd be great to hear from someone who has taken the path and done well. At any rate, I appreciate these videos and everything you do here! Thanks.

      oooh I have so many thoughts!
      PROS of a Music Degree:
      Berklee is great, it's intimidating as hell, but you'll immediately know where you stack up against all the other hot shots from around the world.
      It's the only music school where you can study non-jazz and classical. I literally had a class on John Lennon. Friggin' John Mayer sat behind me.
      I love music, I truly don't know what else I'd be good enough at to even try and make a career out of - maybe therapist, but i'm terrible at writing papers.
      CONS:
      Yes, it's very hard to "make-it" in the traditional sense. There's a lot of luck, strategy, perseverance, and honestly ruthlessness necessary to be big time.
      There's 2 paths:
      Do something that you like OK, makes responsible money, and do music on the side.
      Or go all in, risk not ever being rich, have to be very careful with the money you do make, but be doing the thing you know you LOVE.
      Both are good choices really. You can be happy either way!
