From the time I was exposed to music by my parents at a very young age in Hubli .. Raga Hamsadhwani has been apart of my growing up .. in both Carnatic and Hindustani gayaki.. today listening to this version .. took me to that place in ones heart.. where the true meaning of yearning your loved one is experienced..!! I have always heard renditions of Bhakti bhav in this ragam/raga .. and that one live rendition of Pt Jasrajji with Pt Sanjeevji as his sathidaar..!! Way back in 1980’s..!!
I had the privilege of watching him live back in '03 in Hyderabad when his guru Pt. Jasraj introduced him and his talent to the world during the annual free concerts in memory of his late father. At that time, Pt. Jasraj was upset at the sparse attendance, and said the days will come when people will have to pay a heavy fees to listen to Sanjeev's performances. True to Panditji's predictions, Sanjeev has scaled a level of skill that few artists can aspire to get to. Thank you for this upload.
While hearing to this beautiful rendering I feel like taken away to a different world of gandharvas. Just immersed in Holy river and cleansing our mind away from worldly dust. Getting close to the Almighty's abode. Enjoyment to greater heights of human life. Its a journey from earth to Heaven. Thank you sir.
Excellent. Thanks for sharing it. Listening to young Classical Master after a long gap. The most glorious future awaits your talent. God bless you. 🙏❤️🙏
i wish i could give endless likes to this divine rendition so as to put those thumbsdown to the dustbin.. It requires a great Saadhna and love for music to sing like the way Pt SA ji. I really feel pity on those 14
Most melodious & delicate Hamsadhwani ever heard in a male voice. One can hear shades Pt. Jasraj in between in his singing. But a totally distinct singing style of his own. SA is arguably the best vocalist of current times.

though this raag basically belongs to Carnatic music, i love it most when the approach is hindustani... dont know why... but enjoy more in this style... what to say about Panditji's melodious n sweet voice... simply superb
+nisha kamath You are right. In the Carnatic style, they give importance to sahitya so the raga bhava does not come out in full measure. In the Hindustani style, it is pure raga all the way! Listening to it is like getting immersed in Ganga!
this raga was introduced by Sri Mudduswami Dikshitar, who was a Sanskrit scholar, Yoga master and Tantric Kriya expert. All of his songs reflect a profound peace, an unshakable stability of mood, derived from Yoga practice. This is the opposite of Tyagaraja songs where the bhakta's mind is going through a variety of emotions. Thus a good rendition of 'Vatapi Ganapathim' shows "UdAttata" - not meant to be 'pretty, sweet' etc, which the Hindustani style is. Both need to be enjoyed with an understanding of their respective character.
Earlier this year I wrote a musicology article comparing the symbology of Sri Dikshitar and Johann Sebastian Bach. The charanam of 'Vatapi Ganapathim' goes - Pranava swaroopa vakratundam (one whose trunk is curved in the shape of Om) - nirantharam nidila chandra khandam - (the crescent moon providing the 'm' symbol for Om). On the other hand listen to the ending of Pt Abhyankar's song - the standard love wordings of Hindustani music "Tum bina mo ko kalana " etc. It is a much lighter sweeter mood.
Parvathy Hadley thanks a lot for the sweet reply. yes I do enjoy Carnatic music, and loves Vatapi very much. as I have not learned music , I enjoy as a layman does. thanks
@@garkoko61 Dear Mr. Hadley, I love hearing good music or song - Be it Hindusthani Classical, Carnatic Classical, Western Classical, Classic Rock, Grunge, etc. I play Tabla and have learnt it diligently for a few years. But, I do not have any understanding of Raagas. What always leaves me spellbound is the composition and the bliss that flows from one’s vocal chords or the magic outpouring from a musical instrument. That said, because of my lack of understanding of the technical nuances viz. alaap, sum, shuddha, thaats, etc., I somehow fail to appreciate the ‘WIZARDRY’ engaged in a composition as well as it’s execution. Long story short: Hence, I completely failed to understand the analogy mentioned by you i.e. the Trunk, Omkaar and Crescent moon. And, further you have compared it with the Hindusthani classical rendition. I would sincerely appreciate it if you could explain the same in a more lay-man(ish) way. Your earlier explanation about Shri Dikshitarji and Shri Thyagarajaji was so apt and we need many more such explanations in this day and age.
Beautiful. I have heard the Hansadhwani sung by other great maestros- but this one is refreshingly different from the others. The melody attracts and holds attention, the rag is the framework behind it.Which is as it should be.
