The Wall is a progressive rock album where it tells a story. Each song acts like a chapter in a broader story. For folks who are not use to Pink Floyd I would recommend Dark Side of the Moon. I think it’s much more accessible for the average person trying to get into them.
A friend of my dad's gave me the "is there anybody out there?" live recording of The Wall and I got hooked on immediately as a teen, so I guess it depends on people. That said I was 15 and had started English classes the previous year so I didn't catch the meaning until later.
It was all a setup and they had to get an operator who would fall for it and it took a few tries, but they finally got operator who is totally oblivious that she's being recorded to make an album.
@@billymuellerTikTok Roger Waters thinks Roger Waters was Pink Floyd. Most of us fans realize there were other key members that made the music what it is. Waters is insufferable.
Learning to Fly is my 2nd favorite behind Young Lust. I had never heard it until just a few years ago where it was in the local rock radio station playlist and I heard it like every other day for 2 weeks straight and I had to look it up. The smile across my face as I learned it was infact a Pink Floyd song
This song is one of many that showcases their more straight forward, bluesy, groovy stuff. I am a MASSIVE Pink Floyd fan and have been for ~40yrs, and I have always loved this song. Might be simple, but it is groovy as hell and really fits in much better within the album itself. EDIT: I am sure it has already been mentioned before, but the phonecall at the end is the protagonist of The Wall, Pink, calling from tour in the US back home to his wife in the UK, but a man at the residence keeps hanging up on the operator.
I've never heard of any Pink Floyd fans hating on this song... I'm one of them, and I think it's a banger! Many others have already commented about how The Wall is a concept album, and this song plays a specific role in the progression of its story. There's a few other bangers on this album- Run Like Hell, Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2, Comfortably Numb, to name a few.
Have you done anything off Dark Side of the Moon? If not, what’re u waiting for??? I would suggest Time or Great Gig in the Sky (you will get goosebumps from the vocals)
Young Lust is a great track, good call whoever suggested it. Pink Floyd is obviously known for their mind-bending songs and their introspective lyrics, but their secret sauce is that they are a great rock band and can flat out play - and play funky - when they want to.
Okay so, the original idea behind the song, and the context within the overall story of "The Wall" are two very different things. In the timeline of the story that takes place on the album, the main character is on tour, and has been building that psychological / emotional wall. The phone call in the song, is him making a call to Britain, to find out that his woman has another guy in the house with her. As a last ditch effort to find some sort of Human connection, he goes out to find a groupie. Needless to say, it doesn't really do any good. We still end up in the song "Comfortably Numb" where he has basically checked out completely.
This song is about a rock star dealing with groupies. The scene along with the song in the movie is awesome. It's pretty shallow, but perfect for the scene
I saw Young Lust pop up a lot in the comments section, I think I put it up there once as well, just because it's a pretty big curve ball for the Pink Floyd sound. I was just a kid in the 80s, so I didn't really know this song, but later I found this album, and when this song came up I was like "wait, wasn't that on the radio back in the day?" I love it. It also does a great job of shifting gears on the album, going from some more real moody stuff in Mother, and Empty Spaces, then banging in with a ridiculously great rock tune.
This song is basically a bridge between two songs on the album (which is why it’s probably not been asked for & why it’s start is kinda abrupt.) Fantastic song on one of the best albums ever made in my opinion. Please do much more from THE Wall. And once you have heard most of it, in your own time, a full play through of the whole album give an amazing story! The film is awesome as well 👍
You would you like "What do you want from me?" from the Division Bell album. It's the same blues rock style, but it's harder and more intense. Actually David Gilmour was the bluesier one. It was Roger Waters who wasn't so much. Weird considering he was their bassist.
Seriously guys, The Wall is the best concept record ever made. You owe it to yourself to give the entire double album a listen, with your undivided attention, at least once in your lives.
It’s hard to separate the song from the album because it’s a concept album that is best experienced in its entirety. Especially if it’s your first listen. You’ll understand the meaning at a deeper level, it’s so nuanced.
The reason the beginning seems abrupt is because they wrote it so that you would listen to the whole album rather than one song at a time. It’s a great album. There’s a movie as well.
I got through watching y'all after 5min in to this one... Do yourselves a musical favor: Listen to the entire album "TheWall" is LEGENDARY -you kids won't be disappointed 💯👌
My first reaction to seeing this notification was "OH NO! I feel like this is more of a context song" but I am reminded it still is a banger of a song by itself. I was just thinking yesterday of how I'd love for you guys to not only get back to Pink Floyd but to watch the movie, The Wall. It's a trip but it's so good. Or a full album, from Darkside of the Moon to The Wall is considered their master works and they are definitely best enjoyed from beginning to end.
"The Wall" is a concept album that tells a complete story and the songs need to be listened to in context of the whole album in order to get the full appreciation of them. One song runs into the next (as many Floyd albums do) hence the odd beginning. So the hard rock simplicity of this song is a purposeful contrast to the more conceptual track on this album .. gotta listen to the whole album - or at least read the Wiki about the album to get the context of the story. In the story the phone call at the end is the lead character "Pink" calling home and finding out that his wife is having an affair .. the operator says "a man keeps answering and hanging up"
As already mentioned I'm sure, this album is meant to be listed to as a whole, there are no pauses between songs. Excellent song and album, grew up listening to them as a kid and still love them. Keep up the awesome reactions and I hope to hear more of Floyd in the future.
This album is directly from "The Wall" movie every song is not only a chapter in the story but it is also another brick in his wall. Watch the movie preferably in an altered state then every song on this album will have its context.
This song is super simple until you try to play it! Pink Floyd is simply one of the best ever! I saw the wall live in 1977 and it was killer! I'm 61 yrs old and I will never forget that show!
This is a great song, I like all the more straightforward pink Floyd stuff. The wall is my favorite album. Obviously another brick in the wall part 2 is the best, especially the bass line and the solo at the end
The phone call was the rock star (Pink) calling his estranged wife while on tour. She was in bed with another man, the man picks up the phone and hears the operator saying you have a call from the US and he knowing who it is hangs up the phone. Its a difficult album to pick a song at random and work out WTF is going on.
I love this one cause its gritty and funky and just kinda honest, As apart of the album its basically exposition for the main character, in the film, it's a snapshot of life on the road, shows a piece of the wall being built
I notice Ryan always mentions that “although it’s not the most complex/intricate song I’ve heard I still like it’. Music doesn’t always have to be super complex or deep or technical to be good. If the shit bangs then the shit bangs, period.
He's saying that because a lot of elitists comment that the things he likes are generally simple and not hard to play. He's advocated for the very point you're making multiple times.
Thanks for getting back to Floyd! Any chance we can get a Ride the Lightning reaction (track) by Metallica? I love to see you two enjoy a great Metallica track for the first time haha
This song fits the context and placement on The Wall Album. So many of the songs from that album need to be heard track to track to get the full impact, meaning and context of the song and the album.
Well, it's part of a concept album. If you watched the movie "The Wall," it would make a lot more sense. This is a character Pink, who's a musician on the road in the US, calling home to England and some guy answers instead of his wife. So, the song itself had the beginnings it had, but it was reworked and woven into this story. One of my favorites by them.
this album tells a story. If you take the individual songs out of the whole, they often don't make any sense. You should always enjoy this masterpiece completely. Switch on, sit back and listen, from the first to the last minute. Once I saw the movie and the whole thing made sense to me, I haven't been able to listen to the album since then without shedding a tear.

So many jump-on-the-bandwagon reviewer channels pretty much seem to just say what they’ve learned what viewers want them to say. And if LiV doesn’t like something I love? Well, so many of my personal friends don’t either, and it really doesn’t matter. I appreciate these gentlemen here “keeping it real”.
I haven't gone through the comments yet but I am sure you will see the following phrase quite a bit: You need to listen to The Wall in it's entirety as virtually each song seqways into the next one
Nah dude, this song is so good cause they're basically saying "hey we can do all that weird shit but we can also do some basic shit and it fuckin rips just as hard"
Such a great song! I play in a pub covers band, and this is a mainstay of our set. Goes down well in places where Pink Floyd would generally go over folk's heads.
The song starts abruptly because The Wall is a Concept album so there is song after song that bleeds into each other. As to the phone call, if you listen close enough, and to the album as an entirety, the story begins with Daddy's flown across the ocean, leaving just a Memory. Listen to the phone call. The operator says, " Mr Floyd for Mrs Floyd," but it's the son who answers and then hangs up. On the second try, the operator says, " This is the United States calling, are we reaching" before the young man hangs up again. I think it's safe to say the Daddy who flew off across the ocean at the beginning is reaching out, but the kid either doesn't understand who it is or more likely is resentful and doesn't want to talk to him. At least this is my take. But I've only listened to the album about an hundred times. Listen to the album as a whole and form your own opinion.
Actually it's Pink trying to call his wife but her lover is the 1 answering the phone. I wasn't sure what was going on until I saw the movie version of "The Wall".
This is actually a soundtrack to the film “The Wall”, which is well worth a watch if you’ve never seen it. Glad you enjoyed this, it’s one of my favorites too!
Regardless of when it was made, the songs track with the action in the film (of course) and would go a long way toward explaining some of the details Ryan and George were speculating about.
Pink Floyd is their own genre. When you hear one of their songs, you know it right away who is playing it and no one can duplicate if ! Pink Floyd is legendary !! Keep those Pink Floyd reactions coming !!
The only way to truly understand and enjoy the individual songs from The Wall album, is to listen from beginning to end, read the lyrics, and watch the movie.
You really need to watch the movie “The Wall” to put these songs into context. It’s a concept album that tells a story of the character Pink. So no song stands in isolation to the rest. I personally hate hearing just a single track from this album. You either listen to the whole album or don’t listen to it at all.
Pink Floyd wrote this album and Dark Side of the Moon especially as a whole, each song leads into the next to the point where some songs almost feel incomplete without hearing the next.
I think they would like Time, Money, Pigs, Not Now John, What do You Want From Me. I think theses one are the most "mainstream" I think one of my favorites is Sorrow Live Pompeii 2015, try this one.
Definitely in contention for greatest album ever This ain’t the album for singles This album is a full experience from beginning to end..then watch the movie
You guys have only skimmed the surface when it comes to Pink Floyd. Once you have reviewed/reacted to as much of their music as you have done with Tool and other similar style artists, you will become true fans.
Check out the Pulse 1994 concert. Every song from that concert that they played was incredible. Sorrow, Coming bavk to life, Run like hell, Comfortably numb, the whole TDSOTM album… the list goes on. What ever song you pick, you can’t go wrong
The Wall is a Rock Opera that needs to play in order in one listen. Better yet, just watch the movie The Wall. Everything will come together and make more sense.
This makes SO MUCH SENSE when you see the accompanying MOVIE PINK FLOYDS THE WALL Also when you were talking at the end you missed Mr. Floyd calling Mrs. Floyd but a " man" answers and keeps hanging up.
The song is about a musician diving into debauchery, and he's about to have a mental breakdown. This album tells a story and this song is the equivalent of a quick montage.
This is my favorite Pink Floyd song by far. It just ...it hits all the right spots. The Wall is a story. Pink is a guy in the story. The Wall is about Pink and his, I guess fall from grace, his adventures with sex, women, and drugs while trying to achieve fame and stardom through his own band. This is a song told from his perspective. The song Comfortably Numb starts off with Pink waking up in a hospital with the doctor talking to him: hello? Is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me The Wall should be listened to from start to finish and keeping in mind that The Wall is a literal "musical," a story with characters, plot...its about Pink overcoming his demons and is a reflection of the actual band members and their feelings of dealing with the same issues
Run Like Hell should be next if you want something along the lines of Young Lust
Yes, this 100%
definitely!
I love Run Like Hell. I put it on once and my ex said "the 'run' part sounds like an exercise video" lol
I think they would like Not Now John too
Great track. It was the theme song to the weather report on our regional radio station in the 80s. Haha.
In isolation, it isn’t the deepest song in the world, but within the flow of the album, it becomes incredibly deep.
This song, no matter how simple, fits perfectly into it's place in the albums story.
The Wall is a progressive rock album where it tells a story. Each song acts like a chapter in a broader story. For folks who are not use to Pink Floyd I would recommend Dark Side of the Moon. I think it’s much more accessible for the average person trying to get into them.
Yes, definitely.
I think the best way to get introduced to 'the wall' is to watch the movie
A friend of my dad's gave me the "is there anybody out there?" live recording of The Wall and I got hooked on immediately as a teen, so I guess it depends on people. That said I was 15 and had started English classes the previous year so I didn't catch the meaning until later.
DSOM or Wish you were here
Indeed, or even animals but maybe as a second step
Listen to the whole album and the phone call stuff will make sense if you pay attention to the story
the movie helps .
It was all a setup and they had to get an operator who would fall for it and it took a few tries, but they finally got operator who is totally oblivious that she's being recorded to make an album.
I think most Pink Floyd fans love this song. I certainly do!
Young Lust is one of the many high points in The Wall.
Yes it’s an awesome soulful blues rock song with great Gilmour licks
Learning to Fly has some great guitar grooves and it's one you haven't hit yet.
Oh yeah ! When i was young, i discovered Pink Floyd with this song ! I love it.

This is my favorite Pink Floyd song.
Man people like the music they like. I love people who like different music. I LOVE people ppl showing me new tunes!
This makes SO MUCH SENSE when you see the accompanying MOVIE PINK FLOYDS THE WALL
Also when you were talking at the end you missed Mr. Floyd calling Mrs. Floyd but a " man" answers and keeps hanging up.
I want to listen to this song all night
One of my favorite floyd songs! So good
The song is about a musician diving into debauchery, and he's about to have a mental breakdown.
This album tells a story and this song is the equivalent of a quick montage.
This song and "Have a cigar" are my favorite Pink songs cuz they're different
I didn't see anyone mention this, but the bassline from this song was sampled by Biggie in "Hypnotize". Listen to em back to back and you'll catch it
This is my favorite Pink Floyd song by far.
Just nod if you can hear me
The Wall should be listened to from start to finish and keeping in mind that The Wall is a literal "musical," a story with characters, plot...its about Pink overcoming his demons and is a reflection of the actual band members and their feelings of dealing with the same issues
One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs!!

Huge Pink Floyd fan and i love it
Sheesh... The Wall is just unbelievable till this day. Timeless
Good music doesn't have to be simple or complex, just needs to be good
