Helter Shelter camp and deteriorating CSX rail bridge! (See description)

- Set up tarp camp on Nolichucky River instead of Doe River because of the distance and amount of gear to carry.
So i decided to camp south of Erwin off the Appalachian Trail next to the CSX tracks.
Later in the video show maintenance issues and deterioration of the railroad bridge crossings the Nolichucky River.
My friend Gib stunk up on me this morning while I was still asleep and made animal noises and tried to make a bear sound then banged on my tarp with a branch anð freaked me out! I thought some crazy hillbilly was messing with me wanting me to leave but Gib always has a gag or funny act up his sleeve for you...lol!
Anyway, this is a quite long video and you may want to watch it half one night and the other half at a later time but it's full of interesting facts and information.
My shifts will be on sale all colors and sizes.
i hope you enjoy the video! i accidentally had the camera set in full instead of 9:16. Sorry about the mistake!

He was a modern day adventurer. He knew the country, he knew the railroads, he knew history, he knew how to survive, nothing phony about Shoestring.
Well im sure that vet check or percent sure helped him also.
@@PortsmouthCherokee You gotta do 20 years in the services for that to add up to jackshit. What world are you living in??

Few men see this country the way Shoestring has. God Bless.
LOL !! Back in the '50's my Uncle was an Expert w/ a sling shot. He kept the Blue Jays out of his Pecan trees.. It was amazing how he even did did it.
Setting fire to someone sleeping outside, in a tent, or anywhere is pure evil. Glad you managed to avoid getting burnt!

It always amazes me That you can carry all your gear for miles and get on and off trains. Keep the great videos coming. They really make my day 😊.
Imagine getting to wake up every morning to the sights and sounds of the rapids of the Nolichucky River. It must be the most serene and peaceful thing ever! And that light rain pitter-pattering on the tarp just adds to the ambiance.
Rest in peace shoestring 🙏thank you for all the adventures I got to see
Thank you for showing me a glimpse of your life. You made a difference in the world.

An artifact of knowledge as great as time itself.. Just stumbled upon this gold, yet already feel heart-stricken upon reading the comments. He is akin to the friend we have always wanted; at least myself. No tripe, no embellishment, no pontification, no exudation of bursting ego. Simply the words before they became writing on the wall..
When I was 6 to 13 years old, I lived down behind the Fire Station. I would gather worms on our farm and sell them to the Firemen @ 25 cents per hundred worms. I thought I was making the $$$.And I was was back in that era. I'm 72 now.. LOL...
That spot made a tear run down my cheek, working graveyard shift 10 years,T.Y. for taking me with you fishing. Glue down right now, yet hope for.

Love hearing Shoestring ramble on...
One of the many reasons I enjoy this channel. Shoestring's never in a hurry. Nice to experience. Thanks
Good to see you're doing well! That fishing reel brought back some memories. My Dad got me a Garcia 300 when I was a kid in the 70s. I don't know what happened to it, but I wish I still had it. All metal, including the gears. Built to last! Good luck on your journey Showstring! Be safe and God bless.
I have the 301 model , got it for my birthday in 69. Still have it , works great.
I saw it in his other video, it reminded me of my daddies mitchell 300's he had.
@@JohnnyRebLa Yep, that's exactly what it was, a Garcia Mitchell.
10/8/24-- Shoestring you must still be stoned...lol
You would have froze to death up north here in Pennsylvania last night. Brrrr...
Enjoy your videos. Keep em comin....
Stay safe my friend...
Definitely admirable how he didn't stress and wasn't caught up in the time constraints of expectations of others
Mitchell reels were the business back in the day, still a quality reel.
So stoked to see you speak on and enjoy a little fishing!
Life is so much better when casting and wetting a line.....
I learn something new every time I watch a Shoestring video.
That reel is like the one my grandfather let me use when I went fishing with him, back in the 60’s.
Will have to watch it tomorrow, got called into work early so sadly don't have time to watch it today, but will be looking forward to watching it though.
I loved your nice long video. I could live at that camping spot, too. Check your tag though. You put 10-08-24 and we're still in 2023!!!! Keep those awesome vids coming my friend.
Just ahead of his time!
He went back to the future
Got distracted standing on the beams not paying attention to tagging
Time to buy some lotto tickets! (:
As you age those years go faster
Nice to see you visiting your dad, thanks for taking us around the country with you
My God, that is a beautiful camping spot! You couldn’t have picked a better place is right!
Love the videos mista shoestring!! The long videos makes it feel more authentic and I think I speak for everyone when I say that’s what makes us love your videos even more. It’s you!!! Keep at it strings you’re doing what most can’t
Totally agree with you about the teen thugs. Beautiful spot. Safe travels.
Not gonna lie, I'd be scared sleeping out there by myself. But it sure was beautiful and peaceful. I love hearing the water trickling. My most favorite thing to do is camping. Of course, I'm more of the campground kinda gal in my trailer. I like to hear people sitting around the campfire having fun. Especially if someone plays the guitar or harmonica. Gotta roast some hot dogs and make smores or pudgy pies, too. Looks like you had a great adventure, Shoestring. ❤
Not me. Need hard siding something. Even a full blown tent isn't gonna work for me. I've heard of people sleeping in a hoist setup in AK. They winch their sleeper about a dozen feet off the ground using a cable or rope system over a large tree limb. that way nothing can access them.
It's erie watching him just 5 months ago at the waters edge. What happened to you Shoestring....RIP 😪
It makes you wonder or look at things differently in his content 😢
Shoestring your living the high life that’s a good camping spot right on the water enjoy your time there friend and be safe out on the Rail.
Have only seen a few of your videos but am becoming a fan fast. It is so nice to see the country and enjoy camping. Stay safe.
RIP Mark. We will never forget.
We are truly blessed my friend you go fishing and have a great time camping and hopping trains 👍⭐
Keep On, Keepin On, ShoeString!!! Love your content and way of life. I personally have watched countless videos you have shared. Thank You.
God Bless you Shoestring, May you know eternal bliss!💕
Can't get any closer to nature man. Love it.
I was starting to get worried. Glad you are up and out camping!❤
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to better understand what " Shoe 👞String is describing. Spent time in Swain County Smoky Mountains national park. Beautiful country/for fun scenic train 🚂 ride out of Bryson City. Viewing this presentation from the comfort zone of my computer room. Along the " Space Coast "🚀 of Florida 🐊🐊. Wonder if the " Shoe 👞String " has spent any time around this region -???. Be fun to see 👀 the expressions on the orator's face. As the train 🚂 started towards him on the trestle bridge. As he was was jumping from it.😵. I've walked across a few of those in that beautiful region. Wishing viewers/Shoe 👞String ". A safe/healthy/prosperous (2024). 🌈🎉🌞💵😉.
Hey shoestring, great video 🤔 I do believe they do have an app you can download for a different species of wild plants. I seen it advertised.
Shoestring, this is Jason, I ran in to you at the gas station the other day. That South bend rod is a out of South bend, Indiana, where I was telling you I was born and raised and all my family is. Wesley was the own and founder of the South bend rods and my grandfather and him were friends and fished together. Very beautiful and the leaves are gonna change real quick with this weather change. Hey friend, If you flip that tarp over you wouldn'thave that lip at the end to catch the rain and hold it. Great video! Thanks for sharing..
I thought it was South Bend as in Indiana. I've ridden through there back even when Conrail ran. Eckhart is one of my favorite places too
NEVER sneek into someone's camp! Stay several yards away & announce yourself. ( His buddy should've known better 🙄 👎.) Wonderful video Shoestring! 👍
🔪🔪
I agree that would piss me off, maybe go in his bedroom when he's asleep and rattle his bed
Yeah that's scary as hell. Never do that.
I always learn something from your videos! The 9:16 gave a nice wider view of the surroundings. Be safe out there!
Puttin a rock at the end of your fly. Man I aint heard that smart stuff since I was a scout! Let's go shoestring!
Loved this video Shoestring & am always looking forward to the next one. as a fellow veteran, you remember the first thing we learned in boot camp was " HURRY UP AND WAIT " LOL. Keep on keeping on & be safe!
You talk about being provided for when u are broke. I was a student and my wife and I were living in Washington DC. We went out for a walk on a cold snowy Friday night not knowing where our next meal was coming from. When we got back to our apartment door, laying down in the snow was a 20 dollar bill. We both dove for it at the same time and practically gave each other a concussion. We were able to eat that weekend thank God.
Mark, Than you so much for filming the Nolichucky River. The last time I saw that River was back in the 1980's when I lived up Tennessee near Green Mountain chain. we used to do a bunch of Camping on the side of that Mountain during the snowy winter months and early fall. Used to fish some on the Nolichucky, Sure do miss those days. I did a lot preaching in that part of Tennessee when I was young, and just started out Preaching, Had not been preaching that long, about if I remember, lol, 1 to 2 yrs. Wow, now I am almost 72 yrs old, and been preaching for about 44 years, but most of all, I love Trains and Train History, thanks again, Mark, My Friend, Also was talking to Jaw Tooth last week about time for you to put out another train video, Just one more comment: We will do a Train Video around or near Smithfield/Selma, North Carolina, Diamond where CSX & NS cross, love to see you in our area, thanks again, Mark have a Blessed Week.
Living the dream. I’m go to have to fish camp that area.
Tie some para cord or string between two trees as a ridge pole. for your tarp.
Man shoestring I was sitting back after a day and a half and thought about you, glad you’re doing well ,
still posting these gems🙏🏽
As always I enjoyed the video! Glad to see your having a blast camping and looking well. God bless have a wonderful day 👍😎
Looks like a great place for smallies Shoestring! Good rides & safe journeys ahead!
I'm surprised that the bridge is missing guide rails. Great to see you back on your journey Mark. Stay safe
Wow mr shoestring great scenery love the journeys you go on carry on fella Andy in England take care mr shoestring 😊👍
Grew up hiking that trail and trout fishing the streams.!! LOVED It !!
Make sure you really really rinse out that washer after you use RIT or any other dye. It's a good idea to pour water all around the rim and everywhere else, even under the top rim. Then run a white towel or something through just a plain rinse and spin to make sure you got it all. RIT has been around for at least 70 years, it is a good product.
i found that Dawn dish washing fluid washes and removes the petroleum smell a couple of squeezes it also cleans the washer but wash those clothes separate
I tried that hack a number of years ago it has worked ever since
Yep....i run an empty cycle afterwards
@@TheHoboShoestring with the Dawn dishwashing liquid a rinse to your washer is not needed the beauty is clean clothes clean washer in one wash
He was a good person. He was probably the freest person I've ever known. I hate that I just stumbled across his channel. I would have loved to meet up with him in Johnson City. I hope people can learn something from him.
That Mitchell 300 spinning real is one of the finest spinning reals ever made!!!
Absolutely a beautiful reel and rod. Wish I could have met you. See you on the flipside brother lovecyou
The opening mouth thumbnail is epic excited for another upload much love and respect 🙏
❤️🙏🏻💗 rest in peace, Shoestring 🫶🏻🙌🏻
Shoestring, you were a bacon to all who dream of the live free - die free way of life. Your slow-spoken voice kinda went along with your way you lived, never in hurry to get anywhere, taking the time to enjoy the natural nature of your surroundings, and most always, your days meet the night not by the terms of a clock, but by your own way of telling time. I think of you now, laying peacefully under the stars in the sky knowing where each steel rail-line goes by memory, knowing the life you lived was on your terms....the way it should be for all.
I don't like mine sagging like that either Mark , great video , enjoy.
RIP shoestring when I heard the news I was heartbroken
Egg and milk draped fish fillets then run through crushed Corn Flake crumbs and fried in butter! Nothing better. It's 2023 still Mark.
That shower will keep you from jumping in like you did in Alaska. I never laughed so hard as I did at that one!
I sure left a turd or two in that lake that day as i was crapping myself trying to get up a dumb ladder without steps....lol
Nice spot.
Great start on a beautiful camping trip.
Stay safe, dry and cheerful Sir 😎👍
I bet it will be in tents!
@@Llama_Dhali_G Mostly yes.
But definitely not always.
If it really pours, even the best camp might get a wee bit damp.
I know that from experience 😎

The Mitchell 300 is my favorite spinning reel also. I have about 10 of them, lol.
Great spot. That water looks crystal pure. Stay healthy.
Terrific video! That's a beautiful spot. Thanks, Shoestring!
Lucky that coal train didnt come through while you were on the bridge. Most bridges on CSX have a walkway alongside but few do not, mainly on lines that dont run a whole lot, they dont bother putting a walkway on the bridge. Be safe my friend, and I look forward to next video
Like what happened to Stobe? 😢
@@testosteroneinc.3800 Yeah, made me nervous.
I can't believe those spikes on the ties just coming up loose like that. I'm, surprised there ain't a lot more derails in this country. Our rail system infrastructure is for sh*t compared to almost every other country.
I bet that rain on that tarp sure help you sleep good
thanks for sharing, love your content stay safe.
You’re going to be there all day. My batteries are going to run down I got to go. Thanks for the video buck.😊
I always love Sheostring content! You need to get with some of the model rail road companies and have them make a special shoe string line of box cars with your signature on them some where. It would be big time popular!
Haven't seen dye used on clothes for well over fifty years back when my mom used it to freshen up older clothes . I can just remember the big metal tub , boiling pots of water and the odd smell .
You will never know how much I love you Brother! I live in my converted ambulance and I relate to everything you do. My home is the North American continent . Just like you. It’s the only way to go, in my opinion. Nobody can tell me shit, if you know what I mean. If you ever get to somewhere close to Santa Nella, Ca, please let me know. I would love to shake your hand and hug your neck! Much Love my Brother.
Thanks for another great video Shoestring! Looking forward to your next one. 🎣🏞🌮🪱🦃🦝🏕🚂🛤📱
P.S. Check your resolution setting too. You were actually in 720p according to UA-cam which doesn't fill the frame.
Perfect day to watch your long video as it's raining here. Enjoyed the scenic adventure campsite and rail bridge, etc. Btw...Indica is also known as 'in-the-couch' lol...Hope it didn't hit you too hard..
wow shoestring, love this video!! Beautiful scenery, and it's fun to see u having fun with Gib!! That bridge does remind me of the movie with the boys hanging out on it. If a train was coming, could u feel the vibration on the rails.? My question is why does cxs let their trains run on a bridge that's deteriorating? Scary!! Thanks shoestring for sharing, be safe and godspeed!!
Poison Ivy has similar berries. The tree is called Big leaf Magnolia round here, there was usually a house wherever you find one, albeit long gone.
Was going to put a movie on..... Not now!👍
God bless you shoestring.
I would love to do this kinda thing. Seems so peaceful. That bridge made me super nervous though.
Man I was right up the road in Erwin that day too.. If I only knew you were going to be down near Chestoa I would of went railfanning down there instead.. Great video watched with my wife.. I dunno if I would ever want to cross that bridge unless I had to.. 🙂👍
There's a fish coating called Andy's that's a dry coating, I put it in a big ziplock and put the moist filets in and zip it and shake em up, works real good, it comes in a few different flavors, one's cajun hot. I used to do a lot of rabbit hunting with beagles years ago and some RR tracks were good for bunnies and they liked to hide in that stuff, a couple beagles go in a big spot of that kudzu and bunnies would come squirting out from everywhere, fun as hell.
SS great video Brother! Thank you for taking us along for the journey!
Love this area. My son is a river guide on that river. I Was there just last week. Would love to run into ya sometime while I’m in that area.
In 1991 me and several of my friends were kayaking there ' I was paddling close to the bank' came around a bend in the river' there was a low hanging branch that had a huge hornets nest in it ' I ran face first into it and was stung 27 times causing my head to sweal up like a 🏀
Thanks for the great videos. ☮️ from Seattle
I really dig UP 4014 sign hanging on your wall. Here in Cheyenne, some of us get real excited when she's rolling.
You just describe the way it is around where I live😊
I'd honestly just stop hopping there at the beginning of the video and live on the side of that river forever. What a paradise.
I hope you still have your wanderlust in Heaven Shoestring... Thanks for the rides and videos to help me remember a good-hearted and very wise man that I will miss..
Just found this channel not long before he passed...what a kindhearted man and so full of knowledge. I had to laugh at "This white man ain't having anything to do with pink!" RIP Shoestring.....you'll be missed. I surely hope they find out why and how you passed.....my condolences to your family and friends. You touched so many !❤
