I Want to say something out loud, Mark you do such a great job telling stories and your wealth of knowledge about rail transportation is incredible. My grandfather was an engineer for 40 years. Every night I fall asleep watching these videos, listening to the narration and the trains rolling down the way. Thank you for the countless hours of great content.
What a beautiful lady! Hope her eggs hatch well! Awesome the conductor talked to you. Praying for you Shoestring. It’s going to be different seeing the buildings being torn down.
Any day in South Texas on an aircraft ramps Air Force bases one could find one or two eggs at the four-way corners on the active parking concrete sections. Those poor birds probable didn't see too many of their egg hatchling reach flight status.
A lot of times the Killdeer will run away from its nest if you get too close and pretend it has a broken wing in an attempt to divert your attention away from the nest. Then when you follow it long enough it flies away with its “ broken” wing.
Yup, I’ve witnessed that myself while I was a maintenance worker at a Provincial park. I was amazed at its intelligence when I figured out what it was doing.

Hey Mark, happy to have another video. You sound like you’re doing better. I was looking for something to watch tonight and a 50 minute Shoestring video punched the ticket!
The Killdeer bird is a large plover found in the Americas. It was described and given it's current scientific name in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus. Both parents incubate the eggs for 22-28 days. The young stay in the nest until the day after being hatched, when they are led to a feeding territory where the chicks will feed themselves. (Wikipedia, I had to look it up!) I have them in my area as well... They range from southeastern Alaska, southern Canada to Mexico... Have a blessed night Shoestring 🙏 Stay Safe
Shoestring you make the most restful videos. After a long week of trucking it’s good to hear your stories and yard walks. They help me calm down to get some sleep. It’s a compliment. If I pass out I finish the video later.
Mark, I will keep praying for you every night here in Albuquerque! The world needs MORE people like you and so please stay healthy for many many years to come! Take care and God bless you on your train and health journeys in life.

Good to see you out and about. It's been a rough week for me so this video is just what I needed to bring my spirits up. Sure would be awesome if the could repurpose that crew hotel building. I thought it was awesome that the railroad employee recognized you and didn't give you any trouble. Excellent video. Amazing how much the railroads change and abandon terminals or yards. That's why I always say, grab the videos and pictures while you can. Because no guarantee the locomotives you see or the hot spots you visit will be around in ten years.

Another great episode, watching your from Sydney, Australia. Really hope you can have your surgery soon so your no longer in pain. Have they actually diagnosed what the problem is?
Really sad to see the coal hoppers sitting there and rusting. Its getting hard to find a coal train. I wonder why they are tearing the tracks out and the buildings. Maybe they are doing some type of redevelopment . I hope the railroad isn't selling part of their yard.

Good video Mr. Shoestring! Sure is a shame to see the Erwin yard being dismantled. It's been about 8 years since I was over there. Always enjoyed chasing from there back to Altapass and watching trains at the NS and CSX crossover. Stay safe and thanks again!
Mark I could listen to you for hours. I often preform complex tasks to your narration. You remind me of Dick Proeneke, and sorry to him for misspelling…….be safe.
Hope to see you around Montana sometime! Since I found your channel I haven’t been so annoyed with the railroad crossing near my work that stops traffic during lunch everyday. Now I just hope to spot you going by.
Another montanan here. I agree. And the weather is finally warming up. Id love to see his adventure up the bozeman pass like he mentioned he has done previously.

Hey Hobo, I'm having a 4th biopsy done this Friday April 1st. I definitely have lung cancer in the left lung and lymphoma in my right side for the second time. Anyway, my oncologist went to Duke University and he is excellent. Also Moffett cancer center in Tampa is excellent. Dukes hospital is top notch. Just some suggestions I don't know if it helps at all. Good luck brother and be well.
Glad to see you at it. That beautiful bird was saying...get out of my face...lol. It was sad to see that they are tearing everything down and it looks like they are making a train graveyard out of it....sad.. Maybe they are thinking that its not bad enough to do surgery...didnt you say in an earlier video that one of the doctors had said something about that spot had shrunk? Or wasnt no need for surgery right now? I may have my wires crossed somewhere... Either way...happy to see the video and still keeping you in my prayers! Keep on and God bless!

You made me curious so I looked online and found out wood ties are typically spaced from 19" to 20" on mainline track. That's about 3,250 ties per mile or 307.7 miles per million ties.
It’s sad to see shoestring I grew up in Erwin and always loved going down to the diesel shops with my dad. Really is hard to see the yard tore up like that.
I've said it before and I'll say it again your definitely one of my favorite UA-camrs and just all around knowledgeable and chill people out there.. your videos always make my day and I always learn something ... Just wanna say thanks.. and was thinking ... Not sure if anyone has asked or if I just wasn't paying attention but.. in all your years of riding.. walking.. camping ect.. have you ever ran into trouble with animals.. like bears.. mountain lions ect? And if so how did you handle it . Also.. just curious.. I'm sure you have found plenty of cool stuff on the ground or whatnot.. what's some of the most memorable.. thanks again for the content .. love ya bud
Love to know more of the history of the yard and buildings. Was it all Clinchfield and when did it come through there? A push button rail switch is pretty cool. Great Video Mark. Thanks.
I counted like close to 200. Shoestring my prayers go out to you. You do what you have to stay in health on your end, on our end we'll keep praying for you👍
Great video mark don't know if you have ever ridden the Norfolk southern line across southern indiana but you should check out Duncan hill tunnel I believe it's the second steepest grade in the country I could be wrong but worth checking out good luck God be with you your videos are very entertaining keep up the good work!
Hey Shoestring! Recently stumbled upon your videos and they have become a new favorite pass time. I was curious about your 1,000,000 railroad tie question. I calculated based off of weight because a quick google search gave me the average weight of an oak tree. I was going to go the sq ft route, but every tree will yield a varying number of full sized boards. (Because every tree’s branch orientation would be different) The average weight of an oak tree is 3000lbs (likely filled with water) and a railroad tie can weigh between 100-300lbs. So if we go with a conservative estimate of 300lbs per railroad tie (pre treated but in wet form) you could theoretically get around 100 ties per tree. So 10,000 trees but probably more like 11-12000 to make up for the variance. Given railroad ties are placed 18” on center you would pass 3520 railroad ties in a mile. 1,000,000 ties in 284 miles (1000miles =3,520,000 ties = or 35,200 trees) Wordy but theres your answer!
Thanks for posting your travels Shoestring. I can watch trains all day. I was always watching the RR cams when I stumbled across your channel. I used to hop trains from Victorville to San Bernardino in the early 70's. It was a fun and easy ride down the Cajon pass, but I was too green to know how hard is hard to catch a ride back because they have a hard pull up the mountain pass so they put massive power to make it up the grade and they were going just a bit too fast to grab onto. I finally got caught by a bull and they called my parents who had to come and fetch me from Santa Fe detention. I was only 14, so probably for the best.
Ya can shure tell its spring when the Killdeers are in the yard. thanx for the tour of Irwin Shoestring! I hope things go well for ya with the doc. Stay safe/Prayers!

Always in my thoughts Shoestring. Stay positive and never give up hope. This will work out, we need our Hobo safe and well.
Great video, good luck with the medical procedures. Enjoy your chicken!!
Have you seen a train with tanks and military equipment???
Building are taxed as real estate, everywhere railroads are demolishing build. Example Rigby Roundhouse in So Po ,Maine is now history
I believe that brick “crew change” building was once the headquarters for the Clinchfield Railroad.
I'm sure you have found plenty of cool stuff on the ground or whatnot.. what's some of the most memorable.. thanks again for the content .. love ya bud
How are you doing Shoe? Hope you're getting stronger. Looks like a nice day out there.
Love to know more of the history of the yard and buildings. Was it all Clinchfield and when did it come through there? A push button rail switch is pretty cool. Great Video Mark. Thanks.
Speaking of counting how many ties in a mile, I wish I had a dollar for every spike that I drove and every spike that I pulled 🚂😃
23:30. According to Google, if appx 3000 ties per mile, then appx 334~334 miles is 1 million ties.
Hey man, could I ask you how you stopped drinking?
Praying you feel better
He's back!! 👌
The snake you chucked probably wanted a friend to curl up with you....lol. j/k. You are well knowledgeable and you taught me some things about trains. Keep up the good job. Thanks.
