idk man, as a feminist, i see plenty of discourse within feminist circles surrounding pornography and what defines empowerment. plenty of feminists are very much opposed to pornography. i think what's difficult is the fact that sexuality is complicated enough, and within our society, sex can be exploited/used exploitatively, but if it's not purely for consumption or it's not made to be consumed a specific way, then it's taboo, and that further complicates our ability to explore sexuality. that was true in the 50's, it's simply become more blatant and over-the-top now. and we still get people arguing with us over consent, because for some reason "someone should actually want to have sex with you and be into it" is still a radical concept to some folks. but i also think that consent is not really separate from this issue of having sex where both people leave feeling good about it. again, in feminist circles, i have seen the pushes toward conversation beyond "yes means yes," about consent not being passive, about consent being active and individuals being active so that sex is something they're having rather than sex being something simply done to them that they just said yes to (i hope that made sense!). so what i wanna see is those conversations being pushes more and more into wider society and us all being less apprehensive about those conversations.
I don't think there are many feminists who are "opposed" to pornography as much as we see the PREDOMINANT use of it as a promotion of the patriarchal malignancy. There is perfectly good pornography that doesn't dehumanize women as a tool for male domination.
GeekFurious - There's a problem of Marketing - the Majority of Porn watchers/users are Men, hence the majority of Porn is catered to what Men like. Furthermore - There's a fair amount of empirical literature to suggest that a large number of Ladies like a bit of Male Domination (for example - Sori's comments in other videos about wanting Vin to be more possessive). I'm reminded of a documentary about the subject - where a famous Porn actress was talking about Facials and responded "Of course it's degrading, that's why it's so hot!". Then there is the lovely and intelligent Mercedes Carrera...
True. I think I prefer Year Zero to this, especially the tracks Capital G, The Good Soldier and God Given. TBH if Vin and Sori wanna react to more NIN those would probably be good tracks to go with. While the Downward Spiral is a good album this song didn't entirely age well IMO.
Agreed. While this is an awesome song it's sad to me that closer is the only Nine Inch Nails song that some people know just like teen spirit is the only Nirvana song for some people. My ex only knew this song closer and I told him that if that's all he knew of Nine Inch Nails then he was missing out on quite a bit. I still couldn't get him to get into them but whatever his lost. He just had terrible taste in music. But you're right it is a concept album. I was very lucky to see them here in my hometown in 2008. It is a show that I will never forget. It was like being on psychedelics without taking anything. 10/10 would see them again.
The analysis got worse after that. "He was raised to believe they were just animals..." No, that's not what this song is about. It is about depression. They MOSTLY got it right. But there was definately some the misunderstood the intention behind. But that's what art interpretation is.
So much talk about sex, but the song is more about using sex to escape being yourself, the anxiety of living, and try to feel something when outside of sex you don't feel anything. The song is about the addiction of sex, and using it to escape yourself. Trent was going through an incredibly dark period of his life, to the point of having suicidal thoughts.
This whole album is about a man’s fall from grace. Mr. Self Destruct plants the seed. A voice in his head driving his actions. He knows there is a problem, so he starts to eliminate all possible causes. First society with March of the Pigs, then his significant other with Piggy. Lastly, God in Heresy. Your interpretation of Closer is pretty spot in. He goes on to lose all emotions and becomes very mechanical in his existence in Becoming. The album concludes with him taking his life in Downward Spiral, then an introspective conversation with himself in Hurt, where he says he would do it differently if he had the chance to do it over again. It is an incredibly powerful and dark album that talks about mans struggle within, and day to day in society and relationships. It was so dark that Reznor has admitted he unsuccessfully attempted to kill himself after the tour while writing The Fragile. Floating in his boat house, he simply ran out of drugs, returning to shore having only written one song, La Mer.
Not sure if you came up with that or read it somewhere, but your comment is a perfect analysis of the album. It’s kind of obvious what the album is about, but I’ve never heard it dissected so well. Makes me wonder what the song “Reptile” is about though.
@@kdog909 A woman. Unfeeling to the suffering you feel or is inflicted upon you by her. Reptile being a comparison to being cold-blooded. "Beautiful liar." If you've ever been used by a woman you understand that line all too well.
"Within the forest. Above the trees" "Within my stomach, scraped off my knees" "I drink the honey, from inside your hive" You are the reason, I STAY ALIVE." That whispering voice of his still gives me chills to this day.
This song was huge when it came out on radio and MTV in the 90's. In nightclubs, all the girls would come running to the dance floor to dance to this, and the guys would come to try to attempt to dancegrind with them. Its actually a song about depression and using sex as a means to escaping his depression to feel good. The video for this is crazy.
Haha... both of your expressions when the chorus first kicked in... priceless. Although this wouldn't be the NIN I would have recommended. If you look to do one in the future try "Only".
This album tells a story about a guy who descends into depression.Closer is relatively early in the story when the character is using sex to avoid his pain. Spoiler Alert: He kills himself. Trent Reznor has a christian history. He was even a youth pastor at his church at one point. So, he understand the spiritual element and from a christian perspective and this informs his music.
I love watching y'all breakdown this stuff. I recommend giving this entire record a listen, as it paints a narrative all the way through. It has a lot to unpack.
The piano outro is reznor all the way. The Downward Spiral is a masterpiece that has to be reacted to. Vin and Sori you really need to delve into the Downward Spiral album. As for it being simple, he purposefully made it catchy to contrast the theme of the song. And all those sounds you can hear, he created them through distortion, feedback looks he basically creates instruments. He is a genius.
Man, Nearly choked on my toast watching that reaction! Love the breakdown! Took me a long time to appreciate this song, now I really like the contrast between the 1st and 2nd verses. It's a shame you didn't do the whole album, It's a roller coaster ride, one of my favorite albums! What was the song from The Fragile that you liked Vin?
As a man who has battled and is still battling with sex addiction I feel this song talks to me more than any therapist or counsellor I've seen over the years. Personally my addiction has almost destroyed my relationship with my kids, now adults who only have memories of abandonment. I envy people who have love as their foundation.
Trent Reznor is one hell of a musician....he use to live here in New Orleans and u could hear him practicing in his studio apartment where he lived. He is a cool guy....the song IN TOGETHER NOW IS ONE BAD ASS TUNE.
That piano at the end wasn't a sample, it's the "downward spiral" motif that's repeated a few times throughout this album to symbolize the character's gradual descent. This song marks the first time in the album that it appears in it's complete form. The Downward Spiral is one of the greatest concept albums by the way. I'd definitely recommend checking out the album in it's entirety. When you get the the last song, "Hurt" everything will finally make sense. Such a classic that Johnny Cash decided to cover it right before he died. I'd love to know which song from the Fragile you enjoyed. Was it "We're In This Together"? If you haven't heard that one I'd strongly recommend it. It's brilliant and hopeful and one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.
How did Vin find NIN sonically “meh”? NIN is widely considered one one of the most sonically complex bands ever. Were you even listening bro? There were so many levels going on all at once.
To be fair, this song is pretty meh. Definitely not one of NIN's best, and yet it's ridiculously popular. Huge NIN fan here. But I came to NIN in my 20s because as a little girl I listened to this song and it bored me to death. I didn't know english, so I didn't understand the lyrics and the shock value was lost to me. So yeah, this song is pretty meh. The album though, is a masterpiece.
And Trent Reznor had to create, mix, sample and edit all those sounds by himself in a year where technology was not very advanzed, like, nowadays you have a lot of softwares to make electronic music but back in the day it was probably not that easy
Dont get me wrong I love NIN but the man is entitled to his opinion and input on what he listens to. At least give him some creedence towards actually giving it a shot and listening to it. I know plenty of people who aren't at least willing to listen to something in it's entirety.
NIN is boring as far as pushing the boundaries of industrial music, so many bands have found ways to incorporate other musical styles, P.h.o.b.o.s and Neo Inferno 262 are good examples.
its called opinions dude. If you don't like peoples opinions, why are you watching a video on people reacting to something and then speaking their mind?
I think closer might be the best song of all time, it's cool calm collected, it's heavy, it's soft, it's easy listening and abrasive, it's vulgar and it's decent, it's groovy and it's abstract. It's an accidental myopic and authentic idea that transcends genre and musical boundaries. If you strip the parts and layers nothing of what you hearing works in isolation but as a whole they make sense. But most importantly it's written with integrity.
Oh my God yes! I love that one. I especially love the end where he says Won't Give Up it wants me dead, goddamn this noise inside my head. I thought about getting that tattooed on me somewhere. I struggle with depression and anxiety and for me that was like dealing with the mental illness. I know that he said he struggled with anxiety for years so that's probably what that was about also the alcoholism and where he talked about being in a period Of self-loathing.
This is one piece of a puzzle called The Downward Spiral. And the next song on the album starts immediately at the end of the song, hence the abrupt ending.
Interesting reaction/analysis guys. I don't really see stuff through a christian lense but I find myself learning new things considering new points when I listen to your conversations. I like that. One thing I wanna add is that, in my opinion, the ''sadistic'' sex theme is pretty common in industrial music.
I'm quite sure he subscribes to that world view. But that's not what the song is about. That is what Bad Touch by the Bloodhound Gang ("You and me baby ain't nothing but mammals...") is about, and it is meant to be humorous. But this song is about depression.
Science is a study by humans, and thus is as flawed as humans. It is not equivalent to reality. In my worldview humans are NOT equal to animals because humans are made in the image of God while animals were not. We have reasoning ability, emotional capability, and thinking ability on a level that animals do not have. Proof of point: Who will deny that it would be wrong for me to walk over to my next door neighbors, murder the whole family, just to eat what is in their refrigerator? But who would arrest a pack of lions and try them in court for killing a leopard to take its meal? Or to put it another way: Is murder wrong? If all humans are the same as animals, then why should we try to stop humans murdering humans when we don't try to stop other species from murdering each other? What is the difference? Intellect - thinking ability - a deeper ability to reason. Humans are not driven purely by instinct. A migrating butterfly does not have to learn how to navigate, it just knows it. Humans were not born to fly but learned how. Animals are not devoid of emotion, thought, or reason, but they are not at the same level as humans. So there are other worldviews where humans are not animals. Every human can have a different worldview. To pretend the scientific establishment is reality is as silly as when they gave the Papacy dibs on what is considered heresy. To summerize it simply: there is reality - what actually exists, there is worldview - what each person thinks exists, and there is established dogma - what a society or group establishes as reality. If you learn to distinguish between the 3 of them, you'll improve your critical thinking stats by +5.
LOVE this! NIN & Tool are my 2 favorites! Not a song I would have suggested for you to react to BUT I’m happy to see you give NIN some time! Loved watching Sori listen to this one! Vin seemed really ticked off & lost me for a while. Downward is an experience & very hard to pick a song out from them all- kinda like The Fragile, they just work well together. Listening to Trent grow & change over the years (every album is so different!) has been amazing!
Our views on things like sexuality are largely a result of our culture. You're confuse cultural memes with objective truths. You're not saying that you believe this is sacred, you're saying that is IS sacred and on some level we all know it. That's staggeringly arrogant. Just for the sake of argument, imagine this from the perspective of a hard atheist. We ARE animals, sex is not sacred, and it feels good for no other reason than to encourage us to do it (because the meaning of life is survival and reproduction). And that's not a grim view, because there is still beauty in it even if your view makes it hard to see and it doesn't dismiss the complex web of society we've built on top of it. Side note, I don't think pornography is empowering for women as a whole (ignore that, it's not a pun), but neither do I think it necessarily degrades them. That's for the woman to decide as an individual. You don't get to tell her that she's wrong to feel the way she does about sex, or that she doesn't believe that "deep down."
It's neither your view nor the strength of your conviction that strike me as arrogant; it's the assumption that "deep down" we know your worldview is correct and we're just kidding ourselves. It comes across as a complete dismissal of everyone who disagrees with you.
I disagree. The culture has taught us that it is sacred due to archaic religious origins, and I don't mean just modern society. There are very old cultures who obviously saw the ritual and process of sex as sacred too. Something can be sacred to you, but to be bewitched into thinking it is a universal state of reality is a naturally and quite common naive perception. I think this is why people rag on christians so much - doctrine tries to insist that their truth is everyone's truth because its designed to be a conquering religion. As a result, people are convinced that its doctrine (including dictating what is sacred) is the one true paradigm.
All Christians know that the Bible was written by men and that god couldn’t possibly exist as described therein, if he even exists at all. But for Christians to admit that to themselves would would send them into a spiral of depression and misery. They suppress this unwelcome truth and wield their faith as a bulwark against logic and reason, so they don’t have to think about the meaninglessness of their existence. But deep down, they know they’re just lying to themselves. (I don’t believe any of this, but hopefully it illustrates how such a worldview might sound from the other side.)
Not even seen your reactions yet but already like whoa. When this came out i was 14 and it played the unedited version with my mom in the room. My hand never went to the volume button so quick in my life so she wouldnt hear it. And to Vin saying that the line "you got me closer to god" is him saying it's his was of expressing his sexuality, I believe that he's saying that "closer to god" is the way you feel during orgasm and that's all he wanted
Being “closer to God” is his acknowledgment that the concept of “God” is flawed in itself. God and Trent Reznor have one key thing in common: Their whole existence is flawed.
She wants to know his reaction first cus she doesn't want to have to admit how turned on she is. Waiting for him to tacitly give her that green light. Well, that's my interpretation anyway.
She doesn't seem turned on but she definitely wanted a response from him. Maybe she was playing with him a little bit to get him say what she wants to hear.
Sketchy Magpie and? Not sure that has anything to do with what I said. They have released over 20 albums, EPs and remixes. So if it’s 1, 2, or 5 it’s starting and they stepped into one of Trent’s darker releases during a time when he was struggling with addiction and suicide. Before we jump into the deep we first should learn how to swim. It’s not always best to recommend what one enjoys but what will draw them in for more reactions.
@@jmoney6900 i will, from personal experiences even. Lotta messed up things before PHM. Thus wrote it out. He was way more depressed and darker then. Not fighting chemical addictions as you say. He was self medicating as many do. and when the smoke clears drinks n drugs are easily put aside. Rehab time was not for that, but for mind. Many say rehab over mental institution and most one in the same. By time if DS he was coping and understanding and letting more work out via his writing. Enjoying life as he put aside before. Being a better person too. And so he flourished to more brilliance and balance. Miss the music a dark mind makes but love him happier 😍
i am NOT RELIGIOUS whatsoever. i grew up baptist and gave that up after my THIRD time being baptised, i think it's weird now. bu i appreciate your actual diving deep into poetry. that's usually what songs are, poetry that you get or you don't
This played over and over on Triple J FM (alternative radio) here in Australia when I was a kid. First time I heard it was in the car with my mother. That was...yeah.
Was hoping you guys would hit something more on their heavier industrial metal tip like Heresy or March of Pigs. Closer is great too but still in a similar vein as your previous song selection.
I remember being 14 and hearing this song for the first time. I was like these lyrics are offensive to the majority of people...EXCELLENT!!! so I listened to it alot from 14-16 years old. Still kind of enjoy it today, more for the experimentation in the music rather than the lyrics. I've 90% grown out of listening to songs/bands just cause the content is deemed offensive. Definitely a good song to do, very influential band and song. Cheers Vin & Sori!!!
Love this reaction. "Violate you" both look puzzled like I heard that, right? "Penetrate you" both are completely overwhelmed with WTF!? Then the chorus comes in and now you are not only blown away by the lyrics but intrigued as well. Perfect
"The Downward Spiral" is a concept album about someone literally in a downward spiral. His state of mind deteriorates with each song and the story that it tells. Also, listen to a few other Reznor songs and you'll understand that most of them deal with his lack of faith and anger at God and religion.
I was so loving this. Vin was so on edge about this and Sori knew it. I felt that Sori was digging it but Vin wasn’t having it. I can picture Sori cleaning up with headphones on and Vin walking in asking,” What are you listening to??” Uhh, Tool??
@@matchesmalone3730 Wrong Man, Chris Vremna's primary job when he was in NIN was sampling and programming. Same with Brian Liesgang and Charlie Clouser when they worked on Broken & The Downward Spiral respectively. There's a fuckton of sampling on TDS.
Omg I love that one! Trent Reznor is a genius in my opinion. Everything he did up until the slip was good. After that it kind of got lazy but I know that it's because he got clean and sober in that always happens with artists after they get clean and sober. I'm happy that he found some happiness and that he is on the road to recovery but still the music did get lazy in my opinion. Though I have to say there are a couple of good tracks on add violence one of them being the background world.
Thank you! Finally a brain!! (Ceot, it was mostly coke& alcohol). He accidentally did whole bag of what he THOUGHT was good coke (Pulp fiction shit),but it was Heroin. He almost died. Got clean because of it.
Duality, yes. Sure. But Vin, you have to remember something when analyzing a lot of these bands/songs, and it is SUPER relevant in this song: drugs. Heroin and alcoholism are the metaphorical subject of SO much in industrial/underground music. Trent Reznor "the one man band" Lol, has struggled with both most of his life. I think he's been sober for awhile now kudos to him for that. But to your point, he's also a deeply intelligent man and writer and I guarantee you that your analysis is also an equal part of the meaning of the song.
Sketchy Magpie head like a hole doesn’t really sound like the rest of the album. It’s very out of place. A good song but, not in the same world as the rest of the album.
A NIN song that I think you 2 would appreciate is Something I Can Never Have. Think that it would be worth a listen just for you 2 and wouldn't necessarily have to be a reaction video!
It's really interesting to see you guys break down songs like this, today you covered a favourite of mine because it hits close to home. The song as many have said here is a small part of a bigger picture, this entire album was a way for Trent Reznor to come to terms with his depression, his addictions, and his hatred. This song in particular deals with the hatred he feels towards himself. The act of fucking like an animal makes him the same as any other animal, he's no longer human, he's no longer flawed, he can feel closer to God because it's a moment of clarity and calm for him. And I'm really glad that you two pick up on these things when you evaluate :).
Wow, Your post song discussion on sex was fantastic. Also your analysis of this song has completely changed how I hear this song. I didn't realize how deep it was. I used to listen to this song with a kind of hyped up "lust" feel to it, now I realize this song is actually sad.
Hey Vin And Sori Great Video, I'm Glad That You Understood What The Song Is Saying And Your Take On It In Your Own Words Are Very Interesting It's Great To Get Your Points Of View.
I love this band, they are to me what Korn is to Vin, but this song is my least favorite NIN song. It is so overhyped and overplayed because of one line in the song. They have so many better songs and tracks. This song is only good in the context of the story of the album, otherwise, it just comes off as shock for shock's sake.
Okay wow, I am blown away by the reaction to this song. Well done Vin and Sori, I am purposefully not deleting my previous post because I want people to see what my previous interpretation of the song was, but you have shed a whole new light on the song. Thank you.
Agreed.. Not the best NIN song. Popular for the shock value. My favorite album is The Fragile. The songs seem to be deeper and more dynamic while being less abrasive.
The whole album is about addiction and how it puts you down to a point where you feel nothing. Sex in this song is the way for feeling something beyond the empitness the drug-addiction left you with.
Trent Reznor is a brilliant musician! His music is so versatile and he’s also a genius with film scoring. I had a lot of inspiration from him over the years!🤘🔥
First of all, Trent does not sample other musicians or songs. Everything in Closer is NIN original content. He has covered other bands like Queen's "Get Down Make Love" which you should check out. It's awesome! Secondly, Closer is about sex, and sex only. Do not try to read something else into it. It's beautifully done and speaks for itself like much of his work.
Sori, you are the BOMB!!!!..... funny to see how you brain pick Vin and shit.... LMAO NIN for life.... try HERESY, Mr. Self Destruct & HURT... cheers \,,/
Thank you for speaking so much truth....Wow...though I am a hard rocker..I grew up in a very strict Christian environment deep in my soul I do agree we all feel sex is a sacred and spiritual experience...
Heresy is a great Nine Inch Nails song. I think the entire song is how Trent views Christianity. It's about how people believe in sects and he found it himself away from those groups. How people manipulate religion for their own gain and push their corrupted agenda People describe the song as an attack on Christianity but it really isn't.
Well, since Christ never manipulated anyone...then he is referring to corruption of power...not the teachings of Christ...if a person is not acting as Christ ...then they are not Christian...but atheist preach the opposite...while doing zero good in the world themselves...
I got to say, taken in the entire "The Downward Spiral" album, Vin definitely hit the nail on the coffin with his interpretation of the lyrics. The entire album is a nihilistic masterpiece.
Fun fact: Trent Reznor rented a home at 10050 Cielo Dr. Los Angeles... the home of Sharon Tate and the site of her murder along with several others by the Manson family. He rented the house specifically to record this album (The Downward Spiral)...... and record it in this house they did. He ended up leaving the house claiming he couldn't shake the creepy vibes he was getting. He did however remove the infamous front door that had the word PIG written in Sharon's blood. He bought a Studio in New Orleans and installed the door there.
@@jacobstaten2366 Lol why? Does that affect you at all?? It's taking "art" to another level, feeling it, living with it, i don't see the problem, he didn't do nothing wrong
The thing is that you need the whole context from the album to catch on the lyrics meaning and even some of the melodies in it. That melody at the end of the song is repeated in other songs, it's sort of the signature melody for this album. This is from wikipedia, an extract from an interview to Reznor: "The idea behind the album is of someone who sheds everything around them to a potential nothingness, but through career, religion, relationship, belief and so on. It's less muscle-flexing, though when I started it I didn't know what I wanted it to sound like. I knew I didn't want to be a full metal album, so I tried to address the issue of restraint. It was a long process."[1] "Thematically I wanted to explore the idea of somebody who systematically throws or uncovers every layer of what he's surrounded with, comfort-wise, from personal relationships to religion to questioning the whole situation. Someone dissecting his own ability to relate to other people or to have anything to believe in...With 'The Downward Spiral' I tried to make a record that had full range, rather than a real guitar-based record or a real synth-based record. I tried to make it something that opened the palate for NIN, so we don't get pigeon-holed. It was a conscious effort to focus more on texture and space, rather than bludgeoning you over the head for an hour with a guitar."[2] "I was really into electronic music at the time. David Bowie's 'Low' was probably the single greatest influence on 'The Downward Spiral' for me. I got into Bowie in the 'Scary Monsters' era, then I picked up 'Low' and instantly fell for it. I related to it on a song-writing level, a mood level, and on a song-structure level...I like working within the framework of accessibility, and songs of course, but I also like things that are more experimental and instrumental, maybe."[3]
While it's a fun song, there are so many songs in the Powerwolf catalogue that literally scream for a review on this channel more so than Army of the Night ever could. Honestly, it's a band more suited for a fireside chat than just a song reaction. Powerolf is the only band I know who are simultaniously accused of being fundamental militant Christians and Satanists, and who are, at the same time, clearly taking the piss out of both camps. Heck they even made a song about the duality ( *Catholic in the Morning, Satanist at Night* ). You should include a review of their latest album cover, with the centrepiece of the wolf being puppet master to both Angel and Demon, too. You'd need multiple elements in that discussion: a variety of songs like *Amen and Attack* or *Raise your Fist Evangelist* vs. *Lupus Dei* or *Mother Mary is a Bird of Prey* . And then contrast that to the absolutely overblown silliness that is *Resurrection by Errection* or *Coleus Sanctus* (I mean, really?! come on!!) vs. *Panic in the Pentagram* or even *Saturday Satan* . And let's not forget their whole stage gimmick with the cathedral flair, the incense and all that jazz. And in the end it simply boils down to the simple fact that these guys are neither religious fanatics nor devil worshippers, but simply a group of chaps, who celebrate and love playing Metal, as they have stated at multiple occasions. And tha celebration results in one of the best live acts in Metal of the last decade, so it'd be worth from that perspective alone :D. Nevertheless, a full on 3 hour or so dive into this band by Vin and Sori would be absolutely great to see.
Starting this video: I want to see if they get the point. Edit: OK, Yeah I guess they missed it. The whole song is about Trent Reznor using sex as a distraction frim his own self hatred. In a day to day basis someone would hate themselves, but in sex they can pretend someone cares about them. Really this song is about depression and the lengths people go to to feel as if they're worthwhile.
I'd like to see your conversation after listening to Nightwish - Greatest show on earth (live in Tampere). Bet you'd have a lot to say about the subject.
This is one of the purest and deepest lyrical breakdown I have ever seen. Even though there were aspects of your opinion I cannot agree with, I do and will respect them. WELL DONE!
I'm not sure if you'll read this or not, but if you do, just want to say, keep it up. As a Christian myself, teenager, and metalhead (fan of all kinds of metal) I appreciate the thought you put into what you do and how you review songs with an open mind (reminds of that line from Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, "Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us something new Open mind for a different view And nothing else matters..."), which if we all had more of, the world would be a better place. I came across your channel by accident one day, but I got to say again, I appreciate the thoughts and opinions you guys give about songs, whether I agree with them or not--its still cool to delve deep into the music and lyrics--metal, is indeed--at least for me--a thinking man's genre. I don't mean to waste your time with a long comment, so here's my list for songs you should react to (and I've chosen carefully songs which I think carry a very strong emotional semblance either in mood of song or lyrics themselves or both, don't get me wrong, I love all moods of metal--whether dark, brutal, fast, slow, angry, sad, philosophical, etc.): Megadeth - A Tout le Monde (the one from 1994 album Youthanasia) (what a powerful and deep serious song, and a song that really inspired and touched me in a way I couldn't have guessed--if you didn't like In My Darkest Hour, you have to like this one. I know you guys said in a previous video you didn't quite like the "In My Darkest Hour" semi-ballad song, and that you didn't think Dave Mustaine could sing or sing well--which I agree with to an extent, but he tries, and I understand if you don't like his style as it may sound like "crooning in your ear" sometimes if you aren't used to it, but give it a chance, especially on this song--plus the fact that this song hasn't really been done by another other channel on youtube right now and I know how you guys don't like to do what everyone else does or "follow the trends", don't worry neither do I)Megadeth - Foreclosure of a Dream (this semi-ballad song is great as well)Megadeth - Time: The BeginningPantera - Hollow (just wow, what a melody and what a song--helped me mourn one of the greatest guitarists in metal ever--RIP Dimebag, and sadly now Vinnie. Strange how it was written way before his death, and the same with Fade to Black for Cliff Burton, RIP \m/)let us not forget Cliff Burton nor any of the others we have lost)Gojira - The Gift of Guilt (just wow, what a band--from heavy to brutal to soulful)Gojira - Born In WinterAmon Amarth - Embrace the Endless Ocean (this song is also one of those songs that really hit me in the stomach--made me wish I had listened to it sooner--but yeah, the lyrics and music are just pure sadness, which I love)Metallica - (pretty self explainatory, I know you guys have done a lot of Metallica, and I understand if you don't want to over do it. I agree don't over do it. It's good to let other bands shine as well, not just one all the time--but if you do consider doing some more Metallica here are some suggestions):; Hit the Lights, Motorbreath, Whiplash, Phantom Lord, Metal Militia, Fight Fire With Fire (yes I know you did this one), Ride the Lightning (that ending solo is just \m/), Trapped Under Ice, Battery (you can watch the Seattle 89' version if you want--what a show! No need to say anymore), Disposable Heroes (I know you did this one too), Damage Inc., Blackened (I know you did this one too), The Shortest Straw, Dyers Eve (I know you did this one too), Holier Than Thou, Through the Never, The Struggle Within, My Apocalypse, Hardwired, Spit Out the Bone (maybe some others I forgot) (these if you want "Fastallica")If you want some more "ballady" Metallica, here are some songs:Fade to Black, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), One, The Unforgiven Trilogy, Nothing Else Matters, Until It Sleeps, Bleeding Me, Mama Said, Where the Wild Things Are, Low Man's Lyric (yes I know these last 5 and The Unforgiven 2 are on the Load and Reload albums, which had a different sound from the rest of Metallica's discography, which most people don't like--but I honestly DO NOT hate them, I just find them different. Perhaps not so great as Metallica albums and better as James Hetfield solo project albums, which is the same problem with Megadeth's Risk and Super Collider--better as solo Dave Mustaine albums, not necessarily as Megadeth albums. If you're still reading this, I obviously know you won't be able to get through all of these, and I have many other requests in mind--but for the sake of simplicity and not geeking or nerding out as a metalhead on you guys--that's it. Hope you have a nice day (or night where I'm at), God bless, and rock on! Stay metal! \m/edit: I don't hate Load and Reload, I just find them different.
Here are some others I meant to add: As I Lay Dying - I Never Wanted As I Lay Dying - The Blinding of False Light Killswitch Engage - The Arms of Sorrow (there are many other great songs of theirs I could pick) Testament - The Legacy (the ballad song from their Souls of Black album, their first album titled "The Legacy" is great as well, so brutal and thrashy, but this song is just so somber and inspiring) Testament - Return to Serenity I'll list some more later, I've got to get to some homework now. \m/
idk man, as a feminist, i see plenty of discourse within feminist circles surrounding pornography and what defines empowerment. plenty of feminists are very much opposed to pornography. i think what's difficult is the fact that sexuality is complicated enough, and within our society, sex can be exploited/used exploitatively, but if it's not purely for consumption or it's not made to be consumed a specific way, then it's taboo, and that further complicates our ability to explore sexuality. that was true in the 50's, it's simply become more blatant and over-the-top now. and we still get people arguing with us over consent, because for some reason "someone should actually want to have sex with you and be into it" is still a radical concept to some folks. but i also think that consent is not really separate from this issue of having sex where both people leave feeling good about it. again, in feminist circles, i have seen the pushes toward conversation beyond "yes means yes," about consent not being passive, about consent being active and individuals being active so that sex is something they're having rather than sex being something simply done to them that they just said yes to (i hope that made sense!). so what i wanna see is those conversations being pushes more and more into wider society and us all being less apprehensive about those conversations.
Agree. Pinning this! Important contribution
Ah the Schism between Sex-positive Feminism and Sex-Negative.
I don't think there are many feminists who are "opposed" to pornography as much as we see the PREDOMINANT use of it as a promotion of the patriarchal malignancy. There is perfectly good pornography that doesn't dehumanize women as a tool for male domination.
@TOOL what an insightful, well thought out and tasteful point you make. You are probably a completely secure and flawless individual.
This song is part of a story, the downward spiral is a concept album. Definitely recommend giving the whole album a listen.
You'r Right , also my favorite album
True. I think I prefer Year Zero to this, especially the tracks Capital G, The Good Soldier and God Given. TBH if Vin and Sori wanna react to more NIN those would probably be good tracks to go with.
While the Downward Spiral is a good album this song didn't entirely age well IMO.
Completely true. The first song by NIN I heard was hurt and it brought me into the whole downward spiral album. I loved it
@Cory Thompson then you're missing out on a lot. Try the fragile or with teeth.

The analysis got worse after that. "He was raised to believe they were just animals..." No, that's not what this song is about. It is about depression. They MOSTLY got it right. But there was definately some the misunderstood the intention behind. But that's what art interpretation is.
@Cinder Man True dat
And then A Warm Place, where he is finding some kind of peace with his life

Don’t like NIN? What’s the matter...too DEEP for you?
Not sure if you came up with that or read it somewhere, but your comment is a perfect analysis of the album. It’s kind of obvious what the album is about, but I’ve never heard it dissected so well. Makes me wonder what the song “Reptile” is about though.
@@kdog909 A woman. Unfeeling to the suffering you feel or is inflicted upon you by her. Reptile being a comparison to being cold-blooded. "Beautiful liar." If you've ever been used by a woman you understand that line all too well.

It's one guy writing it, but he has a band. A replaceable hired band but a band none the less lol

He is a genius.
there is no "she" referenced in the song lol.

Love the breakdown! Took me a long time to appreciate this song, now I really like the contrast between the 1st and 2nd verses. It's a shame you didn't do the whole album, It's a roller coaster ride, one of my favorite albums!
What was the song from The Fragile that you liked Vin?

That's a cool song! I'll request it!
I'd also recommend Survivalism from Year Zero. Would be an interesting conversation.
The Great Below is a good song, My personal favourite is The Wretched
It's a great album! The Frail into The Wretched! Wow! I love Somewhat Damaged and Even Deeper too!
I do request Great Below like a few days ago :D its for shure lost somewhere in comments

PLEASE DO THE ENTIRE DOWNWARD SPIRAL ALBUM!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!! IT'S ONE GIANT STORY AND IT ALL SOUNDS LIKE ONE GIANT SONG IT'S SPECTACULAR!!!!!
It`s the best album in the whole fucking world!!
I’m pretty sure she wants you to play this song without the camera recording. Maybe in a different room.
Trust me.
Okay, if you guys do another NIN song I'm voting "The Becoming" my favorite off the downward spiral.
Great tune!
This was a huge hit back in the day. It was all over MTV and the radio.
This is one piece of a puzzle called The Downward Spiral. And the next song on the album starts immediately at the end of the song, hence the abrupt ending.
I remember being so pissed that my brand new Discman inserted a pause of like 2 seconds between each song... lol
I love how glossy her eyes got, and how flush her cheeks got.

wow i did not see this one coming - great video! Do NIN - Wish.
This is a song about drug addiction that is written from the perspective of the addict. You're focusing too much on the sex part.
Tbh, most people who hear this for the first time are going to think it's about sex.
It is about latching on to sex as a new addiction over heroin. Addiction is addiction.
Interesting reaction/analysis guys. I don't really see stuff through a christian lense but I find myself learning new things considering new points when I listen to your conversations. I like that.
One thing I wanna add is that, in my opinion, the ''sadistic'' sex theme is pretty common in industrial music.
“He probably subscribes to the worldview that he is an animal...”
That would be called...reality.
Kingdom: Animalia.
I'm quite sure he subscribes to that world view. But that's not what the song is about. That is what Bad Touch by the Bloodhound Gang ("You and me baby ain't nothing but mammals...") is about, and it is meant to be humorous. But this song is about depression.
@@Sam_on_UA-cam Depression is just our over-developed brain cannibalizing itself. In which case satisfying raw (mindless) impulses might be a relief.
Welcome to the dark side Sori. We've been expecting you.
It’s arrogant to hold to a worldview consistently ? Nah. I’m not a post modernist, I believe in objective realities.
It's neither your view nor the strength of your conviction that strike me as arrogant; it's the assumption that "deep down" we know your worldview is correct and we're just kidding ourselves. It comes across as a complete dismissal of everyone who disagrees with you.
Nah you just disagreed with me I don’t think that’s arrogant. And my worldview states that we all know this to be true and suppress it.
I was laughing since before it started because i knew what was coming! 😂😂😂
Not even seen your reactions yet but already like whoa. When this came out i was 14 and it played the unedited version with my mom in the room. My hand never went to the volume button so quick in my life so she wouldnt hear it.
Something I can never have is waaay darker than Closer.
Charles Hudspeth seriously? Please explain how.
He's writing as heroin and his relationship ship to the drug. He's clean and sober now.
Sadly
@@SpiralOfWhite Trent Reznor is so gifted. Even now that he's sober and clean, he still writes the same equality of music and lyrics.

You know, to be totally honest with you, after listening to you two I don't ever want to read a bible or go to church again. Great Job!
You should do a live listen to his first album Pretty Hate Machine. It came out in 89 and was way ahead of its time. It was so surreal and creative.
XSTATIX Tribal Electronic Music they didn’t really like Head Like a Hole, though. Pretty Hate Machine is a gem but not sure they’d dig it.
I couldn’t agree with this more.
Sketchy Magpie head like a hole doesn’t really sound like the rest of the album. It’s very out of place. A good song but, not in the same world as the rest of the album.
He's thinking "maaan if we weren't on camera right nooow"! 😂 😊
Please react to We're in This Together by NIN🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This is the song I figure Vin meant when he was talking about one The Fragile song. The Wretched may be a good choice as well
The thing about The Wretched though is I genuinely think you need The Frail as well
thats what i was thinking too, but i really like the whole first half of this album, the first 6 tracks
His reaction at 2:33 is priceless!
Song works better as part of the whole Downward Spiral, I guess it’s sort of a concept album.
Wow, Your post song discussion on sex was fantastic.
Also your analysis of this song has completely changed how I hear this song. I didn't realize how deep it was. I used to listen to this song with a kind of hyped up "lust" feel to it, now I realize this song is actually sad.
EPICA - Consign to Oblivion (Live at the Zenith)
Hey Vin And Sori Great Video, I'm Glad That You Understood What The Song Is Saying And Your Take On It In Your Own Words Are Very Interesting It's Great To Get Your Points Of View.
I love this band, they are to me what Korn is to Vin, but this song is my least favorite NIN song. It is so overhyped and overplayed because of one line in the song. They have so many better songs and tracks. This song is only good in the context of the story of the album, otherwise, it just comes off as shock for shock's sake.
My feelings exactly.
It's not about shock value. He's just describing drug use in a very graphic way
The becoming is better.
Literally the first metal song I ever heard, in a car...with my mom and my Grandmother when I was like 10, I was just like 😯😮😳😁.
What I don’t get it why Christians are so weird about sex yet it’s the way we all ended up here. So why are they making a scene? Crazy
Sori, you are the BOMB!!!!..... funny to see how you brain pick Vin and shit.... LMAO NIN for life.... try HERESY, Mr. Self Destruct & HURT... cheers \,,/
The song is actually not about sex! Trent says it’s not and can’t believe people don’t get t.
Regardless its how one interprets for oneself.
This was the song that got me laid with my first girlfriend! 😂
NIN absolutely rules.
You lucky bastard I lost my virginity to Adam Sandler's a medium pace. LOL
@@pappajudas9267 bruh! That's sad.
How people manipulate religion for their own gain and push their corrupted agenda
People describe the song as an attack on Christianity but it really isn't.
@kimmo maki You are correct ... was typing faster than my mind was processing lol
"Fun fact" more like "Disturbing fact" lol
That's in pretty poor taste. I just lost a little respect for him knowing that.
@@jacobstaten2366
Lol why? Does that affect you at all?? It's taking "art" to another level, feeling it, living with it, i don't see the problem, he didn't do nothing wrong
@@jhonnycagexrage7458 don't play stupid. It's disrespectful.
This music video got many American Christian Parents Groups angry when it came out in the 2000's.😂.
😆
Ministry - Psalm 69 is always a crowd pleaser
The thing is that you need the whole context from the album to catch on the lyrics meaning and even some of the melodies in it. That melody at the end of the song is repeated in other songs, it's sort of the signature melody for this album. This is from wikipedia, an extract from an interview to Reznor:
"The idea behind the album is of someone who sheds everything around them to a potential nothingness, but through career, religion, relationship, belief and so on. It's less muscle-flexing, though when I started it I didn't know what I wanted it to sound like. I knew I didn't want to be a full metal album, so I tried to address the issue of restraint. It was a long process."[1]
"Thematically I wanted to explore the idea of somebody who systematically throws or uncovers every layer of what he's surrounded with, comfort-wise, from personal relationships to religion to questioning the whole situation. It was a conscious effort to focus more on texture and space, rather than bludgeoning you over the head for an hour with a guitar."[2]
"I was really into electronic music at the time.
Powerwolf - Army Of The Night! Ooooooh the reaction of the video would be superb😂😂😂
I always go with certain expectations in your reactions to songs that are very close to my heart and you have never disappointed me
Nine Inch Nails - Right Where It Belongs!!!
Appreciate this my guy!!
Here are some others I meant to add:
As I Lay Dying - I Never Wanted
As I Lay Dying - The Blinding of False Light
Killswitch Engage - The Arms of Sorrow (there are many other great songs of theirs I could pick)
Testament - The Legacy (the ballad song from their Souls of Black album, their first album titled "The Legacy" is great as well, so brutal and thrashy, but this song is just so somber and inspiring)
Testament - Return to Serenity
I'll list some more later, I've got to get to some homework now. \m/
