Daniel Defense H9 1,020 Round Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- The brand new Daniel Defense H9 is essentially a worked-over rebirth of the Hudson H9 pistol. After spending almost 4 years overhauling the design, Daniel Defense has perfected this low bore axis, 1911-type striker-fired pistol and resurrected it as the Daniel H9. The engineers at Daniel Defense claim that this is much more reliable than the original, legacy Hudson H9, but is that true? I seek to find out by putting 1,020 rounds through this pistol in one range session. How did it hold up? Check the video to see for yourself.

I have and I never received my 2024 James Reeve... Gun Slut calendar.
"Small, Glock-y Squish" was James's nickname in prison.
Savage.
😂😂😂
Still his name in the clubhouse at his local range
I just spit my food out laughing. Thank you for that
Can you practice law after going to prison? Oh, wait, Louisiana.
James regarding lead exposure/absorption and blood lead levels, the easiest and fastest way to reduce your amount is changing your wardrobe/laundry cycle so you keep range clothes and shoes separate from your regular clothes/shoes and you wash them separately (keeping the same clothes on increases the amount of contamination you bring into your normally frequented living areas and likewise increases your risk of consumption by several orders of magnitude), D-Lead has a range of hygiene products that also help from shampoos and shower body wash to laundry mixes and detergents specifically made to combat these health risks.
Being smart about your laundry and wardrobe exposed to lead and using such products helps dramatically reduce the amount of lead you absorb which also means you process what lead you do have in your blood/marrow a lot faster.
Also if you haven't its always worth getting an airflow study performed if you own/operate a indoor range.
Also also projectile composition makes almost no difference in lead exposure risks UNLESS you are in a position to be exposed/inhaling projectile residue such as cleaning range backstops etc, if you are not then all copper vs lead core (even just coated lead) makes absolutely no difference, you are exposed to the vast majority of absorbed/consumed vaporised lead from leaded primers containing lead styhpnate. The only "non-toxic" ammo that makes a difference to the human body in this subject are non-lead styphnate primer based ammo like Federal NT headstamped 9mm.
Thanks for this. Just bought a bunch of D-Lead on Amazon. I thought they only made wipes and hand soap.
Great info, thanks!
Absolutely the best thing to keep yourself and family safe. Wash my clothes separately from the rest of the family, certain shoes for the ranges, and they do not get worn in the house. It’s a lot of meticulous details, but my kids have health issues and don’t need any more.
@@JamesReeves Ever since I worked at an indoor range and basically bathed in the stuff after cleaning the range every week in uncomfortable as balls ISO class 7 suits and full respirators I've loved their hand & body soap and their abrasive hand soap is so far the best hand soap I've used. The little tiny bits of scrubbing media in it feel weird initially but man it removed ingrained grease, dirt and oil faster than anything else with absolutely no effort.
Another ESCA Tech/D-Lead product I've seen but don't have much experience with is their D-Step permanent tacky mat's, used to pull contaminants off of shoes and cart/trolley wheels at the entrance/exits of ranges, made to help reduce lead and such getting tracked off a range and into other spaces where it can be consumed by being really sticky when you walk over it.
I'm only here for mailroom

1000+ review already up?! I’m already awake and here for it James. Good morning champ.
GM king
Well, most 1000 round reviews are just a bunch of normal ramge trips, or in Hop/BF's case, normal hiking shit. James's burndowns are literally "how fast can we get 1000 rounds through this thing"
Thank you for finally confirming that the H9 still uses a removable fire control unit as the serialized part! No one has called that out yet in any of the reviews I have seen. That is a tremendous benefit like you mentioned for modularity. That could make the $1300 purchase price a little easier to swallow knowing that you might be able convert it easily to a smaller/lighter carry gun or larger duty or competition style gun. Swapping my OG H9 to an aluminum frame made a huge difference in carriablity.
That's actually great to know. I would be extremely thrilled if DD released a frame that was closer to the shape of the original H9. Extend that front recoil section downward so that it and the trigger guard are at the same level again to maintain that sweet cyberpunk aesthetic of the original.
Yay-hoos? 😂 I'll take it.
hey we got one a them nerd three dee printer yay whoos over here everybody
@JamesReeves speaking of which, Gun Makers Match is in April in PA, everybody!
Will a fully DIY BCG win the competition this year?
Wouldn’t be a James Reeves video without the proverbial ab/crotch shot. Thanks Nick, Kevin, AJ

There is a vhs (thank God) of me performing a choreographed dance to the Backstreet Boys. When I was 36 I had a 12 year old girl tell me I looked like a boy band reject. That one was so savage it hurt.
James already packs a lot of heat in the front and there's just no room for the H9.
🇺🇸. Had the same slide lock “issue” with mine.
Fair review. It's $1349 at my lgs, which gives me pause. Definitely appreciate DD not price gouging on magazines though. Hate that about my HKs
"Way past my prime backstreet boy"... That one got me in the feels 😥
I remember many years ago the torture test on the Springfield XD9. 60,000 rounds. 30,000 without cleaning then a good clean and then 30,000 more. Two different brands of ammunition. During the abuse it was put through every imaginable thing that could be thrown at it. Mud, sand, ice, drove over it with a truck in a limestone parking lot and he threw it off a rocky cliff and spent a hour hiking down to find it. Definitely extreme abuse. It never failed to feed, shoot or eject. I was impressed by that test.
Yet you have DD H9 failing to feed after a few hundred rounds, deemed reliable? Last I checked 1k rounds was the bar.
My level-zero interest in this gun just got even lower, but we ALWAYS enjoy James.
New guns always need time, especially steel/alloy. I'll check back on this design in 5 years as they always get iterated and its clear this one needs just a little refinement. Thx James.
That's what i said about the Hudson H9. Little did i know they would go out of business. I don't think that will happen with DD. Not with the truckloads of money they get from military contracts.
I'd put it in the '2011' category. Double stack 1911's go for sub $1K. Metal frame pistols are harder to work than polymer. More expensive but usually better performance and longevity. It's a trade off. Both are good and have their purpose. Good detailed review 👍
Tested it at the range 2 weeks ago, failed to feed 3 times, had it jam twice on top of that.
Don't know how dirty the gun was, or if it had been cleaned. Paying $1300 dollars for that is a no go.
I like how it felt and shot when it did worked .Plus I think it looks fantastic. I'll be waiting for more reviews like this one.
If you are no stranger to renting range guns, you know that most of the staff at those facilities don’t know jack about maintenance of the guns. It could have been just dirty as hell-no oil, they broke something when assembling the gun after cleaning etc. a range rental is one of the worst places to test guns, but I don’t know an alternative unless you have friends with deep pockets.
@@sheepdogs762mm Range guns are the best way to see what guns are actually reliable. Get ran hard and put away nasty like a rental car.
If a beat to hell range guns still running well, thats a good baseline. I shot the hell out a rental Shield EZ 9mm, and that thing was dry as the sahara and I almost couldnt get it apart it was so built up with shit. But it ran no issues and still accurate.
@@DangaRangaThe first and only Glock I shot was a 19 Gen4 rental that consistently stovepiped on the last round. It was nice to shoot, but not exactly the “Perfection” people keep coping about.
@Horgler oh there's no doubt the Legos aren't flawless. But I'd rather deal with a $400 gun than a $1300+ gucci gun if both are gonna fail to cycle in one way or another
@@Horglermillions of glocks and the one you rented had a problem so they’re all bad. Makes sense. Can you try the first batch of 320s and get back to us?
Excellent review. I really liked the comparison to a G19 with the video overlay. Great job!
Seriously one of the best review videos I’ve ever watched. Thanks! Mine just hit my local shop, so I’m looking forward to picking it up tomorrow.
Appreciate the honest report of the malfunctions etc.
Nice to see some real rounds put thought it. Didn't get to shoot it at SHOT but liked the trigger on the display models I played with.
Just bought this last week, soooo excited. Was dry firing to try to smooth out the trigger because it was so stiff and heard something fly out of the muzzle and bounce around. Lubed it up and went to the range to break it in, pull the trigger… and nothing. No primer strike… turns out the firing pin broke off the tip, I’ve got less than 100 rounds through this pistol. Very disappointing to say the least.
Love your reviews. Im surprised you dont have 1 mil subs yet! Definitely one of the best on youtube.
The pelvic thrusts were hypnotic. LMAO
Couldn't care less about the H9 myself, but at the same time more options are always better so I'm glad it exists for people who might be interested. Im really just here because you never fail to deliver great content. Thank you
Always come here to get the facts thanks James 😊
There's a video here on UA-cam where a guy had one that was keyholing really bad.
I’m down to try one. I loved the original H9, I’m glad to see that DD picked up the design
Solid review. Some of your very best work
I test fired one at Midwest Shooting Center in Fort Wayne Indiana with my Beretta 92fs as a comparison piece. The new DD has a subdued straight back recoil pulse and is very accurate. Doing a side by side comparison made my very familiar Beretta seem to have a noticeable amount of muzzle rise. So the design works and James's burn down poves out the pistol. You just have to decide if it's worth the money to buy it.
Yeah I see this as one of the guns that, as long as they keep their eye on production volume and the market is healthy, should do okay. It's never going to sell like a Ruger or Canik and would be an early victim to a market contraction but the gun market is a pretty big space. Kind of like lever guns - fun, cool, pricey, and never the most practical for the money; but if those were always needed then motorcycles wouldn't even exist.
Terrible comparison. The Beretta is inherently snappy. Compare it to a Glock 19 and you will see there is zero difference between the Daniel defense and a standard striker fire weapon.
Just test it out as well mmm not very accurate for me, rather my CZ
@@DBONE117 I carry a Glock 17 . I chose to use the Beretta so I would have a common metal frame gunvto compare to a metal frame gun. Glocks have muzzle rise as well.
@@creighobbs2716 not nearly as much as the glock. You can pick any other steel frame guns like a Browning Hi power or something else to have a better and more fair comparison is all I'm
Thanks for the review James. 🇨🇦
With such an ergonomic design it won't take shooters long to get in sync with this new kid on the block.
Holy shit
Pinned. The Dude abides.
😂
But its not the new kid on the block. This “low bore” shit was done decades ago. Steyr m9, remy r51 which was based off the original model 51 from a century ago. Im sure theres others, but because its DD now people care? 😂😂😂
Click clack boom this guy is on another level 👆🏻
Seems like a fair and honest review. Was interested in the H9 from back in 2017 or whenever. I'd like to pick one up but no idea when/if it will be available in California...
Former range employee here. Your lead levels are likely higher from shooting down range in the indoor range. The airflow is measured at the shooting bays and not downrange. I could only image what a shotgun burn down does to your lead levels
Thanks for putting in the time! Great review James. The weight is the thankful disqualifier for me because I don't have 1300 sitting around atm.
So many videos on this channel, I'm here for it.
9:46 the reason there is minimal difference between the two is because you are an experienced shooter who knows how to handle the recoil and apply force into the firearm. The "felt recoil" is just that, felt. So the force you need to stay on target is less!
How did people poop before you? Thanks for the content. Love you
Thanks for the burndown. Your echelon burndown is the reason I got the echelon when people ask me im like shoot it and watch the video.
Great review! I had almost the same experience with my original Hudson H9 as far as reliability. There was one brand of ammo it just refused to feed, all others did well. But, I ended up trading that original H9 in for a SA Echelon. I'm happy.
Great stuff, Mr Reeves. I like the innovation of this gun.
This guy is hilarious, great video and stellar ending 😂
Great video, great content and , as usual, entertaining 👍
Love your channel, love your vids. You lost me at plastic fantastic 4:30 . The H9 was on my radar, ended up spending waaay too much on another of your recent reviews...
Another great review. Man the bit at the end about trading out your H9 had me rolling and feeling personally attacked at the same time 😅
James reeves ABS! 😳
In all seriousness tho glad the gun has returned and better than ever, good to the lost gun getting the love it deserves. It tickles my cyberpunk pickle
For $1400, I expect it to give me 1000 rounds out of the box with no malfunctions. If I can do it with a $500 Glock or canik, this gun should be able to do it too.
For 1400 dollars I expect this weapon to perform with zero stoppages other than parts breakage, and for it to not barely pass the reliability test. Easy pass on this.
It's a new platform... Manufacturing always has to work out kinks with the first generation and that applies to everything not just firearms, I think everyone forgets about this concept.
@@ellysiakyoki5587or realize that the market is over saturated with striker fired polymer 9mm handguns and DD is late to the party with their overpriced redesign of a pistol no one asked for. And I’m not paying a ridiculous price to be their beta tester, what are they Sig?
@@st4y_mad787 It's not polymer though, it's aluminum framed. Also a ton of people were actually interested in it then Hudson let customers down so DD picked it up and freshened up little details. No one's expecting you to buy it if you don't like it either 😂 $1,300 Really isn't even that expensive for all the features it has, it would be around the typical $750ish price if it wasn't for being aluminum framed as well as literally just released, once production has run long enough and enough people reporting issues to fix I guarantee you the $ will go down.
Dirty guns malfunction more, news at 11.
If you can't be bothered to clean and/or lube periodically, you'll be unhappy with the performance of a lot of great guns. You don't really have an excuse, you're not hunkered down in a foxhole in Afghanistan. You're getting groceries.
Had some of the same issues. Much more often. I was using some Winchester 115gr. Flatnose (M1152). I thought that maybe it did not like flatnose and may have been hanging up on the feedramp. And that was when the gun was clean(relatively) and properly lubed.(18 lube points?...Jeeze). At one point I was getting multiple failure to feed on a single magazine.
Yeah, I'm hoping my local indoor range will pick up one of these. I had desperately wanted to try it when Hudson was building them. Now it seems I get another chance.
Love the channel.. always great stuff and a good laugh😂👍🏼
So many new guns and wants. Watched your px4 compact carryvideo. Already had the ltt version. Will stick with it like double single action .
It would be tough to appendix carry as James, that’s a lot of inches in one area
Figured it out. He doesn't blink when shooting and doesn't age. James is the T-1000
Well done! I'm willing to bet this side-arm has tight tolerances. Explains the malfunctions when caked with carbon. Recently you visited the Beretta factory, in Italy. Why not thrash a recently made Model 92? Reason? The M9, was a set in stone data package. The commercial 92, keeps changing. The locking block has changed, thats for sure.
This test was apparently was a cherry picked pistol. Other smaller YT channels reported problems with keyholing due to an oversized bore (no rifling marks on the bullet). Other problem was trouble feeding due to poorly machined RSA catch so that the RSA would be misaligned after each cycle.
When I picked mine up a few weeks ago, I was actually surprised about how small the 15 rd mag is. I have thin to medium sized hands and the grip still has a quarter of an inch length below my pinky finger. Its as comfortable to grip as my 1911.
That ab shot early on in the video reminded me I need to get off my ass and stop watching youtube and go do some cardio.
I’d rather go for a CZ Shadow 2 Compact
I have enough ammo, no need to dry fire 😂. Never dropped any of my guns. 😮
@@glockparaastra dry fire isn't a replacement for shooting, it's a supplement. Practically any competition shooter does dry fire, even those that shoot tens of thousands of rounds.
I said the same when I said the price..hard not to go with a shadow 2.
Agreed - dollar for dollar, the CZ S2 C, provides even better ergos, a phenomenal SA trigger, and I would bet the recoil impulse/muzzle rise is just as good - if not marginally better.
What did you break dry firing?
As if I didn't love James enough already, he just shouted out the 3DP2A community as I'm literally taking off a buffer tube blade from my build plate for my 3D printed AR-9 while watching this. 🥰
With my SIG XC320, I think i had one failure to feed with some reload ammo in the first 100 (break-in period). After that, 5k rounds down the range with no issues whatsoever (i take it to uspsa matches once in a while). I was considering adding DD H9 to my carry rotation, but not anymore. Will wait and see until this platform matures.
Yeah, even if it turns out I dont like the H9, DD scored major points w me over the $25 mags
$25 mags? Nice. Someone tell Sig. Their 17 rd mags for the P320 cost about $50 at the Sig website. Thankfully Magpul now has 17 rd mags for the P320 at $35. I'm guessing Mag Shack has them for a few bucks less but still way more than $25.
SOLGW Spec76 is the best oil I've EVER used for both pistol & rifle. So far I've been able to test a pdp, lwrc & shield plus to failure. Each firearm made it almost 3x more rounds than when they were oiled with Lucas heavy duty & clenzoil. The Spec76 almost refuses to leave the metal, stays wet while pushing all crud away from operation. Sometimes reliability isn't so firearm dependant but rather what you use to keep them going.
Shadow Systems also sells their proprietary CR920 mags for $27
That is some good shooting, James. I gotta say, though, my G19 is just as accurate. Daniel defense did a great job with this one. I do agree that a shorter grip and a more wide variety of holsters would definitely attract the ccw market. Thanks as always for your awesome reviews sir james a lot.
They did not do a great job with it
It’s definitely for the big boys to carry. That Zev the size of the 43x is where it’s at!🙌
Called it! On the Shot video asking for a burn down!!!
Nice review man. 1- you mentioned it, now you owe us a 1,000 G19 burn down. 2-maybe Daniel Defense offers heavier heavey recoil springs and I bet the combination of red dot weight and it being loose may have messed with the cycling.
Cool the H9 has been resurrected, but at the DD price point, I’ll stick with my P365.
Or g43/48 even a compact p320.
@Dstev98141 you could buy the glock and the 365 for the price of the H9 but i think this pistol is higher level entry for guys that want to EDC the TT Pit Viper but dont have the spare kidney to afford it.
@@sheepherder911 those kind of guys are idiots anyway. Spend $7000 on that gun which is ridiculous in the first place, then go ahead and expose it to elements/humidity, body sweat, holster wear, and god forbid if you ever have to use it an evidence locker for the better part of eternity.
Get a cheap gun for carry. If you have to use it, go get another one. Simple.
@@stevem4783 that's my thinking. I spend max $1k on the whole EDC. Holster, light, upgrade sights. Maybe a trigger upgrade if I'm feeling frisky. Still 1k or close.
I've got money to burn too (40 with no kids, never married, good career) but I'd rather spend the remainder on ammo or a nice GPR/SBR build. I'll drop a few thousand on a nice custom rifle setup.
@@sheepherder911 you're still fancier than me. I'll trick out home defense or range weapons all day, but my carry piece? Want it as simple and low profile as possible. I roll with a Glock 42 and the only upgrade is a change to metal 3-dot sights. Sometimes if I'm feeling frisky I'll take my Taurus 605.
And if either ends up damaged or in lockup? I can go get another one that same day.
When Jimmy Reeves says he tested a gun, I fucking click.
To me DD is just over priced
You can get same quality for less..
and I’m 2024 that much money for a hand gun is hard to swallow. Staccato, CZ, Dan Wesson. Just to name a few. Why would I want to buy a DD gun. I just don’t think its better
Maybe, one day DD will make an affordable variant of this….
Who’m I kiddin’? It’s DD; I’ll never be able to afford one of these. 🤪
We get to see James wearing yellow aviators AND see his abs?! Be still my fluttering heart...
Love to see uncle Reeves showing off abs in this vid.
I'm definitely interested in this, just want a bigger version. Bring on the glock 17 sized H9 desing.
Bravo to DD for innovating. Bravo to you for the review.
Not shocked at the low-ish round count before malfunctions. Tighter tolerance guns are, well, less tolerant. My Staccato also starts to malfunction if you don’t clean and lubricate it. Good review!
Definitely one of the guns of all time.
His blood may be full of lead, but those abs are all steel.
ok noice
Mossberg MC2C: "Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power!"
I dunno, seems like a few too many failures in a 1,000 round review. Many other pistols have performed better under similar circumstances. This seems like a niche purchase.
That pelvic thrust 😂😂😂 3:55
Interesting, but with all the internal changes, especially the relocation of the recoil spring, it doesn't seem the bore axis would be any lower than with a P07. Sure, the 1911/2011 trigger is tempting, but wouldn't a ported 2011 give similar performance?
I don't see a point in it when there are cheaper, more proven handguns out there. I'm sure the DDH9 will scratch the collector itch for people who really wanted the Hudson and missed out, but it's not for me. If I was obsessed with low bore axis handguns and didn't mind screwing around with a new design I'd probably try the Archon over this. However, I just don't see a point to it.
The proprietary optics mount kinda kills the hype for me.
Whats the alternative? Not everyone wants an RMR, and everyone complaints about clamp-on optics.
@ALovelyBunchOfDragonballz cut for multiple footprints, or no cut so you can get it milled for the optic you want.
Sounds like a great all around handgun with a modest amount of drip, but I struggle to see what role it fills. Daniel Defense is known for high end military contracts, but I don’t see high speed guys or any other military throwing their Glocks to the wayside for an H9. In a saturated civilian market, what segment is it competing in? Who are its competitors? I don’t see many first time gun buyers opting for a h9. I sort of see this as DD’s love letter to the gun world- “we resurrected something you love”
Daniel defense fan boys will buy it just because
Appreciate the commentary. Great video.
Great review. Thanks. !
Weight of the 1911 and the trigger of the Glock
Best of both worlds
Weight of a 1911, trigger of a Glock, double the price of a Beretta. Nailed the trifecta.
I hope they make improvements with it over time. seeing things like the echelon do better when dirty makes me want to wait and see
It seizing up as it gets dirty is not duty gun ok. However on self defense depending on how many rounds in. Should be fine and also means its likely a tight fit up. I see people with really precise 1911 fit up have same kind of issue. Just means you clean this every few hundred rounds. Ill stick with the M&P Shield 2.0 or Ruger American 9mm. Both run very well caviat the Shirld had odd hollow point feed issue that simply went away. I did find Sig Elite HP ammo it hated which was weird. End of the day this DD H9 is proced at the point I bought 1 Ruger A9, 2 Shield 2.0, plus combined magazines of about 12. Difference is people shoot either and ask who makes this? Surprise and irritation one response is Ruger and the Shield 2.0 gets the hmm its quite nice. Responses you dont get from any shelf Glock and H&K line ups. Although the VP9 is held highly regarded by many simultaniously going its expensive when its about $700 offering, odd comment considering.
Initially the pistol was completed in a year and had near total parts compatibility but DD remembered they were DD so they spent 3 years making everything proprietary.
DD remembered what happened to the gun last time someone tried to make it so they made it better.
Morning James, long time fun of your show-s here, wonder if you got the time and resources to review a Rock Island (Rock Ultra FS 45) got the chance to shut one and I was very impress with it, trigger, accuracy and reliability… a 1911 for under $500. Thanks
Took this to the range last night, been shooting for 15 years and I couldn’t give it a lower score. There was nothing I liked about it. The trigger was the worst trigger I have ever used. Me and everyone I was with compared it to a hi point.
It looks like a movie gun, take that as you will.
It would also seem to be finicky when it gets dirty like a 1911, something to remember.
Yeah it looks like a gun from some old sci-fi movies.
Thank you for this review, and the input on the dot with the plates I’ll have to look to the eps for this gun and see if that will co witness
I hope they make a full size version later
So surprised to see James has some calluses i would associate with manual labor. I have never seen a lawyer with calluses like he exhibits at the 12:28 mark of this video.
You should see the calluses on his penis.
I’m full of surprises
Not that surprising, I imagine looking like an aging boyband member involves a lot of time in the gym.
Seems like a gun that was less than well received with a new name DD. Curious what problem does this gun solve. Seems like a huge investment for a gimmick gun. Love your reviews.
St. Bernard Parish? I see no mention of you on Wikipedia under the Notable People of the Parish. Strange?
at first i thought that this would be the PERFECT carry 10mm (more durable than the original guns, a metal frame and lower bore axis to soak up recoil, and magazines that are already proprietary), but now I'm wondering if it would be worth hoping Daniel Defense offers it in that caliber
