Yeah I totally get everyone's comments about the 'Gong Master'. Sven definitely knows how to play a Gong, but actually the 'Master' part in the title is referring to the fact that he is the master craftsman overseeing and tuning these Gongs for Paiste. In 2016 Sven gave me a demo of the 80" Symphonic Gong. It built up to a huge roar with just a few small taps as you can see on the vid, the recording I made on my phone cant really do justice to the sound live. Yeah I know its tempting to want to see this thing hit hard and that surely would be satisfying, but actually youll get a much louder sound if you build up the vibrations slowly and will avoid putting it out of tune.
It takes courage to be a Gong Master. You need resistance over your evil self who doesn't want anything but to strike that Gong with one's all might. The removal of temptation to strike it with barely any force shows the resistance against the evil.
There is no electronic instrument that sounds half as ethereal as this Gong in the hands of a master. That sounded like the beginning of life on earth!

When I was in college - (late 80's) - I was a percussionist in the college symphony, and we used to perform a lot of Stravinsky, and the like... Well, this one Stravinsky piece we were performing (Don't recall the title - but it had a LOT of percussion - including Gongs And Thunder sheets!) - required 8 percussionists, yet there were only 4 of us in the percussion section,... so we had to double up, or even more at times... and I had the bulk of 5 - FFFFF (Very Loud - Not exaggerating - it was marked with 5 - F's!!!)... ...Gong "Solos" throughout the piece. I had to literally "warm up" the gong (about 40" or 50" I think), and time the actual strike/hit - which was cued by the conductor and had to be a single loud impact, with no delay when it was cued!... So - I had to warm this puppy up to the point of explosion/climax, and hold it there until I was cued - which had to be soft enough so the audience doesn't hear it, yet vibrating enough to instantly "Go" when struck... It was Not Easy!... It Was Fun However (Plus we rehearsed the shit out of it - so it was ok by showtime..... That's my "Gong" Story...
@@kjc9trader491 Hahahaha the gong odyssey! I love percussion and pretty much any instrument in general but for me the gong has this... Powerful, mystic aura that's super unique, and "taming" it goes much further than everyone could think
His early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think he really came into his own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Gong master has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
BIG RESPECT TO THE GONG BUILDER FROM PAISTE FOR HIS EXCELLENT PLAYING TECHNIQUE!!! This man play better gong than the most gong players you can find here on youtube. First of all, he knows how to hold a mallet and how to stroke a gong properly, you one can't hear the stroke and let the sound bloom. Perfect example of proper playing technique here!!!
Just an amazing instrument. Paiste has always been the one to set the bar as far as I’m concerned. Went to the factory in Nottwil in the early ‘80’s, surprisingly small for a world leading cymbal and gong factory. Paiste is just the best.
There's always that 'one' person who feels they need to be heard at all costs because to them THEY are the most important person in the room at any given moment!
Glad to see a master at work who knows you don’t need to hit it hard to get a proper swell out of it. 👏👏👏 I wish I could have an afternoon with this thing using all the flumies and a 5-point mic setup.
I look at the thumbnail. I see a giant ass gong and a man built like an ox. I expect a bash that will shake the mountains. What I get is anticlimactic. But also satisfying. Love it.
People that know what they’re doing *never* wail away on these. The alloy used is very brittle, so overdriving these delicate instruments could cause cracks that permanently change the sound character.

Who needs clocks? Just by the fact that I’m watching this, I know it’s 4am
.NO ... it's: 3:24am
Yup, 3 am exactly here, shoulda been way asleep by now 😂
Same
Yeh 4am checks out here
3:54 lol
I love how spooky it sounds, especially when you used the smaller mallet. I thought it sounded like mournful cries of the damned haha.
Ooof. That hit the spot. That is the most beautiful gong sound I ever heard.
The control he had over that gong is incredible. He should add wizard to the end of his name too
Sounds like that recording of the planets. Bone chilling.
dummy thicc
The sound quality leads me to believe it was recorded on a ham sandwich
The video quality seems more like egg mayo i reckon
Do not disrespekt This Mighty gong!
Bro I don't even music, but I get that comment.
@@douglasarnold4248 just kidding. It IS Mighty though :-)
Ham sandwich on rye, you can detect tones of stone ground mustard as well
She asks him, "what's that over there?"
"Oh that. That's my wall of gong beaters"
If I went into a black hole, id imagine this sound
@Daniel McCoy yes, I've heard some recordings. Theyre incredible 👍👍
Lol
Let's see Paul Allen's Gong

This is deeply impressive and moving. Thanks for this experience.
That was super freaking awesome. Never saw a gong worked like that
BIG RESPECT TO THE GONG BUILDER FROM PAISTE FOR HIS EXCELLENT PLAYING TECHNIQUE!!!
This man play better gong than the most gong players you can find here on youtube.
First of all, he knows how to hold a mallet and how to stroke a gong properly, you one can't hear the stroke and let the sound bloom. Perfect example of proper playing technique here!!!
Yeah..love all the Classics from his hit Album..Hits from The Gong
@@Pavillionairez
I think I seen him on the Gong Show 😆
Yes! He makes the sound bloom, only gong masters can make the sound bloom I have come to discover
Absolutely unbelievable...
You can score entire films with a few light moves.
It has an amazing range of sounds.
I had no idea, having heard only the full - on CRASHH! sound up till now.
Just an amazing instrument. Paiste has always been the one to set the bar as far as I’m concerned. Went to the factory in Nottwil in the early ‘80’s, surprisingly small for a world leading cymbal and gong factory. Paiste is just the best.
Thought this would be boring, ended up sounding like the creation of the universe! 😲🤘
What in the world made you expect this to be boring??
@@nickkohlmann I thought it would be just one large "Gooooooonnnnggggg!!!"........ Hit. 😂

@1 2 Yes, "Creation".
@Thomas Jobe I'm writing a book about electricity having an agenda, and it delves into the Fibonacci code golden ratio, etc.
Love it when people can't shut the f up while someone is playing an instrument. It's what gives me strength to push on
There's always that 'one' person who feels they need to be heard at all costs because to them THEY are the most important person in the room at any given moment!

I appreciate the ringing of a cellular telephone. During a funeral service.
Glad to see a master at work who knows you don’t need to hit it hard to get a proper swell out of it. 👏👏👏
I wish I could have an afternoon with this thing using all the flumies and a 5-point mic setup.

I look at the thumbnail. I see a giant ass gong and a man built like an ox. I expect a bash that will shake the mountains.
What I get is anticlimactic. But also satisfying. Love it.
Gotta be honest, those arms suggest a good deal of work, even if we don't see it here! Forearms like that aren't given out with Christmas crackers.
We all thought the same thing. But the wording you used to encapsulate that thought made me LOL.
the build like this is for lugging the instrument around.
People that know what they’re doing *never* wail away on these. The alloy used is very brittle, so overdriving these delicate instruments could cause cracks that permanently change the sound character.
No please, shuffle around making more noise in the room.

Yes please bitch about it uselessly

Hauntingly beautiful. Thank you for posting this.
If the gong master tells you to be quiet... you listen.
How does one become a gong master? Fascinating......didn't know they could make such sounds.
Practice and master playing the gong.
omg i ws going to say the exact same comment... i need to become a gong master as well.
@Dweeeeeezy09 - my initial comment was because I thought this video was pretty cool. Nobody needs your negativity. Lighten up. How were any of us to know he made it? Be nice.
