Gongs play a central role in sound baths and sound healing sessions due to their profound, resonant tones and therapeutic effects. The use of gongs in these settings can lead to deep relaxation, mental clarity, and emotional release for participants, making them an invaluable tool for practitioners like yourself.
Overview of Gongs:
Gongs are ancient, percussive instruments that originate from Asia, with evidence of their use dating back to around the 6th century in the Hsi Yu region between Tibet and Burma. They are typically made from an alloy of copper, tin, and sometimes nickel, and come in various sizes, shapes, and styles, each producing unique sounds and overtones.
Types of Gongs:
Symphonic Gongs: These are the most common type used in sound baths, offering a wide range of tones from a soft whisper to a deep roar, allowing for a broad spectrum of healing vibrations.
Planetary Gongs: Tuned to the frequencies of the celestial bodies, these gongs are believed to bring about healing that corresponds to the astrological influences of the planets they represent.
Tam-Tam Gongs: These have a slightly raised center and no tuned pitch, producing a complex blend of harmonics and a rich, resonating sound.
Wind Gongs: Flat and lightweight, wind gongs produce a sharp, crashing sound reminiscent of a storm, used for creating intense crescendos or gentle whispers in sound baths.
The Science Behind Gongs in Sound Baths:
The therapeutic effect of gongs in sound baths lies in their ability to produce a wide spectrum of frequencies, from the lowest audible tones to ultrasonic waves that the human ear cannot hear but the body can feel. This range of frequencies stimulates the alpha and theta brain waves associated with deep meditative and peaceful states, promoting relaxation and healing. The sound waves from the gong travel through the air and enter the body, which is composed mostly of water, creating a gentle vibrational massage that can release tension and blockages.
Healing Effects:
Attendees of sound baths report a multitude of healing effects from gong sessions, including decreased stress and anxiety, improved sleep, enhanced clarity of mind, emotional release, and a greater sense of well-being. The immersive nature of gong sounds envelops the listener, creating a sense of being transported to another state of consciousness, where healing and profound relaxation can occur.
Mallets and Playing Techniques:
Different mallets can produce a wide array of sounds from a gong. Soft mallets create deep, gentle waves of sound, while harder mallets can elicit more penetrating, bright strikes. The angle, speed, and point of contact also significantly affect the sound, allowing for a rich tapestry of auditory experiences. Techniques vary from gentle taps to create a pulsing effect, to rubbing the mallet around the rim to produce sustained, singing tones, to vigorous strikes for powerful resonances.
Gong Stands:
The stand is crucial for supporting the gong and affects its resonance. Stands come in various designs, from simple, stationary frames to more elaborate, adjustable ones that allow for easy movement and angle adjustment during play. The choice of stand depends on the practitioner's needs, the size and type of the gong, and the acoustic qualities desired during a session.
History of Gongs:
Gongs have a storied history, with their origins shrouded in mystery. They were initially used in ancient rituals, ceremonies, and as a call to meditation in temples. Over centuries, their use spread across Asia and eventually to the Western world, where they found a place in orchestras, musical compositions, and, more recently, in therapeutic settings like sound baths.
Ultimate Healing Benefits:
The ultimate healing benefits of receiving gong healing in a sound bath are profound. Participants often describe experiencing a deep sense of peace, heightened awareness, and a reconnection with their inner self. Physically, the vibrations can help reduce tension and facilitate the release of blocked energy. Emotionally, the immersive sound can be cathartic, helping individuals process and release deep-seated emotions.
Incorporating gongs into your sound bath sessions can significantly enhance the healing experience, providing attendees with a powerful tool for relaxation, transformation, and personal growth. As a practitioner, understanding the nuances of gong types, playing techniques, and the science behind their healing effects can empower you to create deeply resonant and restorative soundscapes for those you serve.

This is by far the best tutorial I have ever seen. You explain all important aspects in a simple way and I love that you point out clearly how important it is to not play too harshly.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m delighted to hear that you found the tutorial helpful. Playing the gong gently is essential to creating those soothing and resonant tones, and I’m glad that emphasis resonated with you. Your feedback inspires me to continue sharing more insights. Happy gong playing! 🎶
Just watched this video again. So informative! Thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed! Feel free to book a live coaching session with me to go into more depth here: calendly.com/soundquest/discovery-call
Wonderful amazing sounds and tutorials 🥹 May I know which gongs are you using? So beautiful ❤
Thank you so much for your kind words! 🥹 I’m so glad you enjoyed the sounds and the tutorial. The gongs I’m using in this video are a 32” Earth Creation Gong, a 36” Chau Gong, and a 28” Paiste Jupiter Gong. They each bring such unique tones and energy to the sound bath. I’m glad you found them beautiful! Let me know if you have any other questions or if there’s anything you’d like to see in future videos!
You have inspired me with this video. I have a Grotto Sonora 19 in gong and a 28 inch Heng Gong that I love playing.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's wonderful to hear that the video has inspired you. Your Grotto Sonora and Heng Gong are fantastic instruments. Keep spreading the beautiful vibrations. 🎶
they sound beautiful. the theta wave discussion is interesting too. i can imaging these would be very relaxing to play and/or listen to. makes me think of my tongue drum on a larger scale.
They do sound beautiful, don’t they? The discussion about theta waves is indeed fascinating. When played or listened to, these bowls can help guide the brain into a state of deep relaxation, similar to the effects of a tongue drum but on a larger, more resonant scale. Both instruments are wonderful for creating a calming atmosphere and facilitating meditation and healing. Have you ever tried incorporating your tongue drum into a sound bath? It could add a unique and soothing layer to the experience.
@@soundquestacademy i have not, but i often play late at night to relax my mind...
Very informative video. Thank you! I have a 32-inch Chau gong. What would you recommend? Should I sell it and get a 36-inch gong to then complement it with the same setup as yours, or should I keep it? And if I keep it, which gong should I aim for as my next gong?
Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m glad you found the video informative! A 32-inch Chau gong is a fantastic instrument with its own unique voice, so whether you decide to keep it or upgrade depends on your vision and goals for your sound healing practice.
If you’re looking to create a complementary setup, a 36-inch gong could definitely expand your sound palette with its deeper resonance and broader tonal range. Alternatively, keeping the 32-inch and adding a different gong (such as a planetary gong) could offer more variety and dynamic contrast in your sessions.

@soundquestacademy Thank you for a great and detailed response! I appreciate the link as well-I’ll check for available times. All the best!
Great vid mate, yeah snoring can be an issue for other participants. I think if everyone had a weekly gong bath, we could change the world
🙏💚🌍🙌
@@robertgoldthorpe1652 💯 let’s keep spreading the vibes!
We introduce a "snore buddy" system. At the begging of each bath we remind that snoring is natural & just ask that the person closet to the snorer to give them a gentle pat or to. So the snorer can change position.
@blueytangled9215
Thanks, great idea mate
Blessings

I think I may have heard you playing a gong in Boulder a couple weeks ago! If not, you look and speak very similarly to the guy who inspired me to get my first gong, which arrived today!
@@jacobcarson3997 amazing! What kind of gong is it?
@@soundquestacademy Its a 26" paiste accent! I love it :D
Great !
love it!
Thank you for this 🙏 I've been a sound vibe healer & soundbath facilitator for 10 years & I bought my 1st gong 6 months ago. It's a beautiful 34" feng/wind gong. I have a large C stand gong which is great but it takes up a lot of room & takes a while to put together when I travel with it. I love those stands you have, I haven't seen them before, they look like they'd be quick to assemble, what are they called please?
Congrats on your first gong! Those stands I acquired from JAM Percussion in the UK. So great for traveling with. Highly recommend: www.jampercussion.com/buy/jam-tamtam-gong-stand-foldbable-fully-adjustable_659.htm

Hi! Share how to make people not snore in practice 😅
@@Yanaznaet Great question! Snoring is the ultimate compliment in a sound healing session. it means someone is really relaxed! That said, gentle reminders at the start of the practice to stay aware of their breath or posture can sometimes help. But hey, a little snoring just adds to the symphony, right? 😄
Wonderful tutorial, thank you! Can you please tell me what the mallet with the white head is?
Hi Tammy! So glad you enjoyed the video. The white mallet. That particular gong mallet is not a branded mallet. I picked it up from a instrument store called Ganharva Loka in Vancouver. If you'd like you can check out their website here and perhaps reach out to them to see if they have a similar one you can order. www.gandharvaloka.ca/gong-stands/
Happy Gonging!
Where do I get those mallets? 💗

What gong and size is this
@@johannabernardy5923 the one on the left is 32 inch. The one in the middle is 36 and the one on the right is 28 inch.
@@soundquestacademy what brand are these gongs?
What is the use of such ugly noise? I listened to many videos with gongs trying to find out why people like them. I do not like them at all.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I really appreciate your honesty. Gongs can definitely produce a sound that’s unique and intense, and not everyone connects with it right away. What’s fascinating about gongs is that their power lies in their complexity. In sound healing, they’re used to create vibrations that interact with the body and mind in really profound ways.
For many people, the deep tones and overtones of a gong help release tension in the body, quiet a busy mind, and even stir up emotions that have been tucked away. It’s like the vibrations reach into places that words or conscious thought can’t. Some describe it as a “reset” for their nervous system, while others feel a sense of deep calm or clarity after experiencing a gong sound bath in person.
I know it’s not everyone’s thing, and that’s totally okay! Sound healing is such a personal journey-what resonates for one person might not for another. If you’re curious, it’s worth exploring the experience in a live setting sometime. The way the vibrations move through the body is something that’s hard to fully capture in a video.
I hope you find sounds and instruments that truly speak to you on your journey! Thanks again for engaging and being open enough to share your perspective.
