Thank you! This feels like a very complete list. I see their are a few examples from the 50's. Which is very exciting, in Western cinema I find that to be a most interesting era for film, so very excited to see Indian films from that time period.
To say DDLJ changed Bollywood cinema would be a huge understatement. The 90s rom-com era had incredible music, not just songs, MUSIC. It used to be that every movie had songs and medeolies that would interweave into each other and throughout the movie itself (DTPH, KKHH, K3G, Mohabbatein, etc.) Sadly a lot of these leitmotifs are also starting to disappear from newer Bollywood movies. I think the only recent Hollywood movie that did this well is Encanto, and even that was 3 years ago.
You should also watch the Shakespearean bollywood interpretations. Maqbool (2003): Macbeth Haider (2014): Hamlet Ram-leela (2013): Romeo and Juliet Omkara (2006): Othello These are amazing Shakespear interpretations that the world needs to watch.

The one thing you need to remember is that "Bollywood" is not the same as "Indian movies". Regional cinema is as good as the stuff made in Mumbai/North India. For eg. My home of Kerala is famous for its low-budget, well-written and acted films rhat actually manage to recieve National Film Awards from the Central Government ever so often. Some Malayalam films I recommend are: - Kireedam (1989): The score alone is up there with stuff like Scorsese's Taxi Driver and other character study films like American Psycho. This is a must watch. - Big B (2007): If you like Ryan Gosling's Drive, this is for you. - Devasuram (1993) - The Great Indian Kitchen - Virus - Anjaam Paathira - Bramayugam (2024) - New Delhi (1987) - Nadodikaatu - Manichitrathazhu (1993) Feel free to comment down if you want a more definitive list ☺️

Oh, I absolutely love malayalam cinema. I watch a lot of Indian movies, but the most I watched are malayalam. I explain to people all the time that Bollywood =/= Indian movies.
You definitely should check out Lagaan! I know the people here are giving you loads of recommendations, but I would like to stick with Lagaan simply because this video is about scores, and Lagaan is one extraordinary piece of musical artistry. The composer, AR Rahman, is also the one who won two Oscars and a Grammy for "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire. Lagaan was also in fact India's official submission to the Oscars that year. Have high hopes, you will definitely not be disappointed :)

Indian youtubers are busy with mocking DDLJ where on the other hand Westerns are appreciating DDLJ. Not a fan of SRK or DDLJ but it seems that we Indians somehow love to mock our own mileatones. No doubt DDLJ has some issues. But every movie had its own.
Probably because to indian audience it's not a novelty. To a Western audience it is. I find DDLJ product of it's time. A lot of hype and praise is due to nostalgia rather than genuine praise.

Loved the video! You should definitely check out more classic Indian films and give them a try! Nearly every Indian movie uses leitmotifs to the MAX like this. What you found profoundly outstanding about 'DDLJ' is something extremely common. Nothing wrong with that, it's just your first time seeing it! In fact, if you watch many of the other classic films starring Shah Rukh Khan (who plays Raj in 'DDLJ,' you'll see this exact same thing). "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham," "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai," "Kal Ho Naa Ho," "Dilwale." and more recently "Jawan" just to name a few. These movies all have incredibly iconic scores that any Indian can recognize within just a few notes. Most genres in India do this, from an action flick like "RRR," to even a horror movie like 2024's "Shaitaan." Music is a huge part of Indian movies in every way!

Music really is a huge part of Indian cinema! It's sad to see that nowadays people see it as annoying or outdated. Sure, overused random dance numbers every 10 minutes is distracting, but even just being played as a background score adds so much to the experience of many movies.
Ooh my favorite Bollywood movie ever. It wasn’t so meanstream but more artsy, and yet it hit every checkmark that defines a Bollywood movie. Definitely a must watch.
Maybe you noticed this in DDLJ, because the theme was more digestable for you. But music and background score having massive importance in just the identity of the movies itself has been a given in all Indian movies forever. We remember movies by iconic music numbers. And movies capitalize on that a heck lot. So much so that, music served the purpose of what movie trailers do now; trailers are fairly a new convention in Indian film industry. They maybe have a even larger purpose because music release of movies were also an important promotional event as well. The Malayalam movie industry is currently in limelight in India and Sushin Shyam is the music composer in vogue in the malayalam industry rn. There were 3 back to back malayalam movies, that got pan Indian attention and he scored 2 of them- 'Manjummal Boys' and 'Aavesham'. There is 2019 movie 'Kumbalangi Nights' which is becoming like a cult classic if it hasn't already, and Sushin Shyam won a State award for his work in that movie. One other big budget movie among the current craze is Aadujeevitham and its scores are done by the Academy award winner A R Rahman, who is like a living legend here and most of the suggestions you've got are movies made iconic with his music
The problem with Hollywood is, it doesn't have 7k years of civilization to draw the inspiration from. Do remember, the first book on performing arts called "Natya Shastra" was written in India 2500 years ago. Also India has the oldest classical music form called Dhrupad. The oldest proof of dance is inscribed in Bhimbetka cave paintings in India. So, India has a rich plethora of cultural history to draw inspiration from. India may not be rich in money now but is certainly blessed with a very rich culture.

I'm sitting here trying to think of a recent American movie with a killer score that I remember long after the end credits roll. I did really like the score for The Imitation Game.
Sholay (1975). Lot of the suggestions here are not differentiating between score and playback songs. However, Sholay's theme, almost entirely whistled, is as iconic as the DDLJ mandolin theme.

The movie "Kisna" also re-uses its score/main theme in various ways to represent the mood of scenes and interactions between the main leads, however I would say it's not done the same way compared to DDLG. Its not a bad thing though! If anything, you can identify "Kisna" because of the main theme due to how relevant it is to the movie's plot. I do recommend giving it a watch (if you haven't already)! I think I was a little harsh in the video if I were to re-watch some of them I'm sure I'd give them a better review then hot garbage. First she showed me Ajab prem ki gazab kahani, yeh jawaani hai diwaani, Gangubai(I actually really liked this one) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. I've seen about a dozen since DDLJ, but it is still by far the favourite. A real 10/10 for me

I was wondering the same thing. Azab Prem Ki gazab kahani is straight trash ngl. There are some like that & you can just tell from the acting. Once you watch the films especially the older ones with an open mind you will most likely enjoy them. & of course always keep in mind these films are made for Indians not necessarily for westerners so whenever you don’t get something it’s bc you have no exposure/connection or just not as much in-depth experiential understanding of it. I feel thats the best way for a non-Indian to enjoy these films is to just keep an open mind. & most of these films are meant to just make you laugh & forget about life or just feel something & you can always tell from beginning of the film if it’s going to succeed or not by the director, acting & the music.

One suggestion would be Sarkar, Indian version of Godfather(just the plot). But very well done. if you are looking more 'palatable' bollywood movies for a beginner (i get its not that you're calling it unbearable, more like its too foreign to get the essence at one catch) then i suggest some indie style movies within bollywood. Dangal, Barfi!, Queen are some good picks, each with their own signature tune to be remembered as 'that movie'. Its also interesting that you found having an dedicated score a strong plus for indian cinema but i would also argue (as an avid watcher myself lol) that they sometimes overuse or depend SOLELY on the score alone to get popular. FYI the modern music industry in india is heavily intertwined with movies to the fact that artists releasing an album/song that ISNT featured in a movie is unheard of. Ofc the internet and spotify is helping to give artists a new route, but it still rarely broke any of the known bollywood singers level of popularity. My point is that, good movies have good scores, bad movies can still have good scores and ppl will eat it up for the score alone. it may or may not lead to an abusive system at the hands of bollywood.
Growing I only watched Indian films on TV & whenever a song started I'd change the channel coz I always hated & still hate being interrupted in the middle of film watching by some songs where they change the location out of nowhere or start dancing. My parents scolded me but I never liked listening to filmy songs, of course there are some exceptions. But after I started watching hollywood films I found out a film doesn't need to interrupt the story with songs which made me like hollywood films although now due to less interesting stories I've lost interest in them a bit. Also it's important to note that USA has a vibrant independent music industry & India doesn't in any language. I think the reason is all Indian music industries are dependant on their respective film industries which prevents them from growing. That's why we don't have music superstars outside the film industry who could sell albums & sell big concert tickets on their own coz only the albums of films get sold. Punjabi music industry may be an exception & probably coz Punjabi film industry itself isn't that big to make Punjabi music industry dependant on it.
This movie is a master peice! U should checkout more bollywood or indian films. One i would recomend is "RRR" it is a action period musical ( every indian film has music so its not technicaly a musical ) u are underrated keep up the good work :)

I respect the emotional connection, and I'm not trying to invalidate that. But we've really gotta learn how to appreciate art and playing fast and loose with the word "masterpiece". India has produced world-class filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen, Deepa Mehta and many more, and it's a huge disservice to Indian cinema to push regressive films like DDLJ as the best India has to offer.

Im utterly disappointed and also not surprised that no one mentioned Ilayaraja who is the GOAT composer of India. I highly recommend you watch Nayagan (1987), Moondram Pirai/Sadma (1983), Sagara Sangamam (1982 or 83), Hey Ram (2000), Mouna Ragam (1986), Mullum Malarum (1978), and Thalapathi (1991). Kamal Hassans films trump any of the Three Khans films, tho Bollywood films from 70s and earlier give good competition to his films.
I'm not Indian but i can relate to that dialogue about homesickness. But i didn't like this movie as much as i liked other old romantic movies like Chandni and Mr.India. I also loved Drishyam, Andhadhun, Badla, and Kahani, but especially Drishyam. India makes great crime thrillers. Their romance movies can be quite melodramatic, eg K3G. I only liked half of this film, the first half. On the other hand, Jab We Met was great.

I didn't mean to discredit Western movies and if it seemed that way I apologize. In the video I even specifically mentioned how great and emotional the Indiana Jones theme is, and more vaguely praised how more classic cinema handled their scores. I was more criticizing a recent industry trend from directors like J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, the Russo brothers, etc. To deemphasize the scores which can make a product that feels a little lifeless and hasn't really been able to make many new iconic scores. Not that these directors are bad per se I find it more likely these decisions come from studio interference. TLDR yes you are absolutely right and I agree with you. And given all your examples are from pre-2000 I'd wager you probably agree with me too.
And you know what the worst part is ,that even after so many good soundtrack you can't find single one on Spotify,its this with every indian film,like why..when there are soundtracks uploaded for every Hollywood film thenwhy not indiann😭

Very well put. Bollywood and most of Indian cinema has always used music as a seamless part of their narration. People now days think they are distracting, but back in the day, it was very very important for the music album to be a big hit for the movie to make it mainstream. ddlj broke a lot of barriers when it came out. It’s a classic and a masterpiece for a reason. Don’t pay heed to the people who intellectualise cinema more than it should be. India has mainly derived entertainment from cinema and that is our Kung fu :)
These kind of movies of tradition and modernity are there in most of the Indian movie industries (bollywood being one among them and a big one). For ex, our movie industry (Telugu film industry) made a movie Padamati Sandhya Raagam (The song of the western dusk) in 1987. It's also a romantic comedy that focus on love angle between a traditional indian girl and an american. We still remember "Thomas Jane" ( very underrated actor who later went on to act as the Punisher) from this movie who played the American. The story takes place in US. The movie is available on youtube, but unfortunately there are no subtitles. One of the latest to focus on same sex relation is AWE (2018). People liked it! The argument between modernity and tradition swings like a pendulum. Not all tradition is bad, but all groups should have self-criticism and reformation. And coming to the music aspect of it, Indian movies started as an extension of stage dramas which had poetry sections in them. These are used for more impactful parts of the dramas. This later in the movies transformed into songs which are different from our classical songs and dances. And then came the background scores. Our music for most part in very on the nose and plays the part of a wing man in flattering the audience. This is more so in the southern movie industries whose expression style is highly characterised by intensity. Music tells a story all by itself. For ex: Aditya 369 (1991) is a time travel movie whose title section is very impressive. The music was provided by Ilayaraja (my favourite). It goes from asynchronous clock ticks to grand orchestration matching the visuals that show the montage of time machine development. The hartbreaking theme of the movie Nireekshana (1982) durring the titles is very impressive too. All these are used as leitmotifs through out the respective movies, just like how you mentioned Raj's theme here. These are very important for emotional resonance in the audience. The latest work that I can talk is the RRR (2022) where both the leads got their own themes.
Loved the video and I completely agree with your take. India has so many different industries that excel at different things. I would recommend checking out the Malayalam film industry(very underrated) if you like more art house style films. They are usually visually stunning, realistic films with great storytelling and ofc great scores. I would recommend checking out kumbalangi nights, ennu ninte moideen, drishyam, manichithrathazhu, manjummel boys, premam, Charlie, ustad hotel, romancham, maheshinte prathikaram, ayyapanum Kohiyum, urumi, bhramayugam, home, 2018, thallumaala and aavesham. This doesn’t even scratch the surface and I wish I could recommend more but my comment is already so long.
Bollywood only produces a small fraction of those 1500-2000 films. And yes, nearly all of the industries (catering to different language-speaking ethnogroups) generally put good effort in the backing tracks always. I am surprised you even heard of the industries as generally, only industries and specific films with good marketing and distribution are known outside their native circles. I wonder where you watched this old film.
If you're looking for good movies which arent boolywood but Indian, I can suggest a few: Kanthara, Kirik party, Kasturi Nivasa Jai bhim, Badshah, Annamalai, Arunachalam, Premam, Bangalore days and many Malayalam movies are good.

I'd like to contradict with your opinion. I'm an Indian and I grew up watching Indian cinema. But after watching several Hollywood movies during lockdown, I actually feel otherwise. Now I feel the music in Indian movies (score not the songs) are quite distracting, even though they're good. I feel often in Indian movies, music overshadows the scene and affects my investment in the scene by becoming an element of it's own. It's quite evident in recent movies of S.S. Rajamouli like Baahubali 1 & 2, RRR etc. which have great scores but can be quite overwhelming. After watching many movies of auteurs like Spielberg, Scorsese and Nolan, I tend to like more the Hollywood's way of doing it. Where the scenes are accompanied by just the right amount of score to keep us hooked. But still some musical pieces made me pause the movie and immediately look up on Spotify to listen later, like Indiana Jones Main Theme, John Wick theme, Driving with the top down from Ironman, Like a dog chasing cars from Dark Knight, to name a few. I hope Indian movies too tone down the scores. PS: This is just my personal opinion and I've never come across another Indian who shared my views.
I think this is a super valid take! I'm pretty sure the reason I bounced off of Indian movies at first was because the first handful I watched did a particularly poor job with balancing this aspect of the films, with some music numbers I might call frivolous. I think for me I just really connected with it because films from auteurs like the directors you mentioned just aren't always in the cultural mainstream like they used to be (Oppenheimer being an obvious exception). So movies that came out recently feel almost emotionally neutered (might be too harsh). A different approach to scoring like what's present in Indian films was novel to a western like me and was exactly what I needed to wake me up from my apathy for film that I've been feeling recently. This is a super interesting and fun discussion point for me! Thank you for leaving your opinion I love hearing different perspectives from people. Most people I talk to don't think about film too deeply like this, so this was really fun for me thank you.
The movies you named has music directors for background score who are Oscar worthy. Nolan or Spielberg movie emphasize on background scores beibg prominent. You can listen to them even without the movie. The OSTs are art in itself. Imagine the snyder movie Justice League where Flash runs. The reason why its elevated scene is because of the unique score that has been created for it. A lot of Indian movies will have big names in background scores and you will feel the difference in when a background score music director does the backgrrather than the generic music director. One Hollywood Music art similar to DDLJ is Titanic. You know the Titanic Theme and you know the emotion everytime it is played. The score is slowed or sped or or played with different instruments to show different emotions. Its played at the saddest scene and the happiest scene and yet you feel different emotions.

9:55 Disney/Marvel just became progressively lazy and playing it safe with music and stories where even the origin story of new characters (like Dr Strange) was simple rehash of first Iron Man (young arrogant rich guy goes through crisis and turns into hero). The more monopolization Hollywood goes through, the more such issues will plague.

Jab We Met 5. Veer-Zara 6. Fanaa 7. Devdas From 1-4, watch it in that order. From oldest release to newest. 5, 6, 7 are more drama than comedy but again just like the rest the musical scores are something else. (I am not gonna suggest shitty cgi movies, those are not the type of Indian movies I go for either). Enjoy.
As an Indian I've always had this complaint with Indian movies, that they are very esoteric and not something someone living outside of India and neighboring countries is going to understand particularly well. A lot of them are about cultural phenomenon in India or about some societal ill or something along those lines which won't particularly resonate with a worldwide audience unlike let's say a sci-fi movie. The Indian movie makers also like to play it very safe, so they don't tackle topics which aren't tried and tested in the Indian market and aren't a guaranteed box office success. That being said, it's only natural that out of the 2000 or some odd movies being made each year, a couple of them end up being genuine masterpieces which could be enjoyed by an audience worldwide. Now for some movie recommendations, Veer-Zaara also starring Shahrukh Khan has in my opinion the best soundtrack in a bollywood movie and the best romantic film I've ever seen, it is silly and corny and very much an Indian film of the 2000s but has a charm which any film in India since hasn't been able to replicate. As for a real tear-jerker, Taare Zameer Par is one of the best movies to come out of India imo. Guzaarish from 2010 on the other hand is a lesser-known movie which tells the sad story of a quadriplegic, it has brilliant acting and cinematography. There are many more movies but this is getting too long already.
Taare zameen par is a legend level movie. I don’t think much about its music and songs because I might start crying. Not a spoiler- Also, the dream is to get a painting like in the end for myself!

To say DDLJ changed Bollywood cinema would be a huge understatement. The 90s rom-com era had incredible music, not just songs, MUSIC. It used to be that every movie had songs and medeolies that would interweave into each other and throughout the movie itself (DTPH, KKHH, K3G, Mohabbatein, etc.) Sadly a lot of these leitmotifs are also starting to disappear from newer Bollywood movies.
I think the only recent Hollywood movie that did this well is Encanto, and even that was 3 years ago.
You should also watch the Shakespearean bollywood interpretations.

The one thing you need to remember is that "Bollywood" is not the same as "Indian movies". Regional cinema is as good as the stuff made in Mumbai/North India. For eg. My home of Kerala is famous for its low-budget, well-written and acted films rhat actually manage to recieve National Film Awards from the Central Government ever so often. Some Malayalam films I recommend are:
- Kireedam (1989): The score alone is up there with stuff like Scorsese's Taxi Driver and other character study films like American Psycho. This is a must watch.

You definitely should check out Lagaan! I know the people here are giving you loads of recommendations, but I would like to stick with Lagaan simply because this video is about scores, and Lagaan is one extraordinary piece of musical artistry. The composer, AR Rahman, is also the one who won two Oscars and a Grammy for "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire. Lagaan was also in fact India's official submission to the Oscars that year. Have high hopes, you will definitely not be disappointed :)

Loved the video! You should definitely check out more classic Indian films and give them a try! Nearly every Indian movie uses leitmotifs to the MAX like this. What you found profoundly outstanding about 'DDLJ' is something extremely common. Nothing wrong with that, it's just your first time seeing it! In fact, if you watch many of the other classic films starring Shah Rukh Khan (who plays Raj in 'DDLJ,' you'll see this exact same thing). "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham," "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai," "Kal Ho Naa Ho," "Dilwale." and more recently "Jawan" just to name a few. These movies all have incredibly iconic scores that any Indian can recognize within just a few notes. Most genres in India do this, from an action flick like "RRR," to even a horror movie like 2024's "Shaitaan." Music is a huge part of Indian movies in every way!

Music really is a huge part of Indian cinema! It's sad to see that nowadays people see it as annoying or outdated. Sure, overused random dance numbers every 10 minutes is distracting, but even just being played as a background score adds so much to the experience of many movies.
Om Shanti Om is a gem. My second favorite SRK movie.
You can try Lootera , it's based on the last leaf, a short story by O Henry. Loved the movie, you'd love the score too.

Ooh my favorite Bollywood movie ever. It wasn’t so meanstream but more artsy, and yet it hit every checkmark that defines a Bollywood movie. Definitely a must watch.
Maybe you noticed this in DDLJ, because the theme was more digestable for you. But music and background score having massive importance in just the identity of the movies itself has been a given in all Indian movies forever. We remember movies by iconic music numbers. And movies capitalize on that a heck lot. So much so that, music served the purpose of what movie trailers do now; trailers are fairly a new convention in Indian film industry. They maybe have a even larger purpose because music release of movies were also an important promotional event as well.
The Malayalam movie industry is currently in limelight in India and Sushin Shyam is the music composer in vogue in the malayalam industry rn. There were 3 back to back malayalam movies, that got pan Indian attention and he scored 2 of them- 'Manjummal Boys' and 'Aavesham'.
There is 2019 movie 'Kumbalangi Nights' which is becoming like a cult classic if it hasn't already, and Sushin Shyam won a State award for his work in that movie.
One other big budget movie among the current craze is Aadujeevitham and its scores are done by the Academy award winner A R Rahman, who is like a living legend here and most of the suggestions you've got are movies made iconic with his music

The problem with Hollywood is, it doesn't have 7k years of civilization to draw the inspiration from.
Do remember, the first book on performing arts called "Natya Shastra" was written in India 2500 years ago.
Also India has the oldest classical music form called Dhrupad. The oldest proof of dance is inscribed in Bhimbetka cave paintings in India.
So, India has a rich plethora of cultural history to draw inspiration from. India may not be rich in money now but is certainly blessed with a very rich culture.

I'm sitting here trying to think of a recent American movie with a killer score that I remember long after the end credits roll. I did really like the score for The Imitation Game.
Sholay (1975). Lot of the suggestions here are not differentiating between score and playback songs. However, Sholay's theme, almost entirely whistled, is as iconic as the DDLJ mandolin theme.

Its not a bad thing though! If anything, you can identify "Kisna" because of the main theme due to how relevant it is to the movie's plot. I do recommend giving it a watch (if you haven't already)! I think I was a little harsh in the video if I were to re-watch some of them I'm sure I'd give them a better review then hot garbage.
First she showed me Ajab prem ki gazab kahani, yeh jawaani hai diwaani, Gangubai(I actually really liked this one) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham.
I've seen about a dozen since DDLJ, but it is still by far the favourite. A real 10/10 for me

I was wondering the same thing. Azab Prem Ki gazab kahani is straight trash ngl. There are some like that & you can just tell from the acting. Once you watch the films especially the older ones with an open mind you will most likely enjoy them. & of course always keep in mind these films are made for Indians not necessarily for westerners so whenever you don’t get something it’s bc you have no exposure/connection or just not as much in-depth experiential understanding of it. I feel thats the best way for a non-Indian to enjoy these films is to just keep an open mind. & most of these films are meant to just make you laugh & forget about life or just feel something & you can always tell from beginning of the film if it’s going to succeed or not by the director, acting & the music.
I'm glad to hear someone else say that movie is trash 😂. But yes super well said. Whenever interacting with a cultural different than yours an open mind is so important. In the instance of Bollywood once I just accepted that every movie is going to have musical numbers I started having way more fun with it. I digress super important to be said, thank you!

One suggestion would be Sarkar, Indian version of Godfather(just the plot). But very well done. if you are looking more 'palatable' bollywood movies for a beginner (i get its not that you're calling it unbearable, more like its too foreign to get the essence at one catch) then i suggest some indie style movies within bollywood. Dangal, Barfi!, Queen are some good picks, each with their own signature tune to be remembered as 'that movie'.
Its also interesting that you found having an dedicated score a strong plus for indian cinema but i would also argue (as an avid watcher myself lol) that they sometimes overuse or depend SOLELY on the score alone to get popular. FYI the modern music industry in india is heavily intertwined with movies to the fact that artists releasing an album/song that ISNT featured in a movie is unheard of. Ofc the internet and spotify is helping to give artists a new route, but it still rarely broke any of the known bollywood singers level of popularity. My point is that, good movies have good scores, bad movies can still have good scores and ppl will eat it up for the score alone. it may or may not lead to an abusive system at the hands of bollywood.

Growing I only watched Indian films on TV & whenever a song started I'd change the channel coz I always hated & still hate being interrupted in the middle of film watching by some songs where they change the location out of nowhere or start dancing. My parents scolded me but I never liked listening to filmy songs, of course there are some exceptions. But after I started watching hollywood films I found out a film doesn't need to interrupt the story with songs which made me like hollywood films although now due to less interesting stories I've lost interest in them a bit.
Also it's important to note that USA has a vibrant independent music industry & India doesn't in any language. I think the reason is all Indian music industries are dependant on their respective film industries which prevents them from growing. That's why we don't have music superstars outside the film industry who could sell albums & sell big concert tickets on their own coz only the albums of films get sold. Punjabi music industry may be an exception & probably coz Punjabi film industry itself isn't that big to make Punjabi music industry dependant on it.
This movie is a master peice! U should checkout more bollywood or indian films. One i would recomend is "RRR" it is a action period musical ( every indian film has music so its not technicaly a musical ) u are underrated keep up the good work :)

I respect the emotional connection, and I'm not trying to invalidate that. But we've really gotta learn how to appreciate art and playing fast and loose with the word "masterpiece". India has produced world-class filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen, Deepa Mehta and many more, and it's a huge disservice to Indian cinema to push regressive films like DDLJ as the best India has to offer.

I highly recommend you watch Nayagan (1987), Moondram Pirai/Sadma (1983), Sagara Sangamam (1982 or 83), Hey Ram (2000), Mouna Ragam (1986), Mullum Malarum (1978), and Thalapathi (1991). Kamal Hassans films trump any of the Three Khans films, tho Bollywood films from 70s and earlier give good competition to his films.

I'm not Indian but i can relate to that dialogue about homesickness. But i didn't like this movie as much as i liked other old romantic movies like Chandni and Mr.India. I also loved Drishyam, Andhadhun, Badla, and Kahani, but especially Drishyam. India makes great crime thrillers. Their romance movies can be quite melodramatic, eg K3G. I only liked half of this film, the first half. On the other hand, Jab We Met was great.

I didn't mean to discredit Western movies and if it seemed that way I apologize. In the video I even specifically mentioned how great and emotional the Indiana Jones theme is, and more vaguely praised how more classic cinema handled their scores. I was more criticizing a recent industry trend from directors like J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon, the Russo brothers, etc. To deemphasize the scores which can make a product that feels a little lifeless and hasn't really been able to make many new iconic scores. Not that these directors are bad per se I find it more likely these decisions come from studio interference.

People now days think they are distracting, but back in the day, it was very very important for the music album to be a big hit for the movie to make it mainstream.
ddlj broke a lot of barriers when it came out. It’s a classic and a masterpiece for a reason.

For ex, our movie industry (Telugu film industry) made a movie Padamati Sandhya Raagam (The song of the western dusk) in 1987. It's also a romantic comedy that focus on love angle between a traditional indian girl and an american. We still remember "Thomas Jane" ( very underrated actor who later went on to act as the Punisher) from this movie who played the American. The story takes place in US. The movie is available on youtube, but unfortunately there are no subtitles.
One of the latest to focus on same sex relation is AWE (2018). People liked it!
The argument between modernity and tradition swings like a pendulum. Not all tradition is bad, but all groups should have self-criticism and reformation.
And coming to the music aspect of it, Indian movies started as an extension of stage dramas which had poetry sections in them. These are used for more impactful parts of the dramas. This later in the movies transformed into songs which are different from our classical songs and dances. And then came the background scores. Our music for most part in very on the nose and plays the part of a wing man in flattering the audience. This is more so in the southern movie industries whose expression style is highly characterised by intensity. Music tells a story all by itself. For ex: Aditya 369 (1991) is a time travel movie whose title section is very impressive. The music was provided by Ilayaraja (my favourite). It goes from asynchronous clock ticks to grand orchestration matching the visuals that show the montage of time machine development. The hartbreaking theme of the movie Nireekshana (1982) durring the titles is very impressive too. All these are used as leitmotifs through out the respective movies, just like how you mentioned Raj's theme here. These are very important for emotional resonance in the audience. The latest work that I can talk is the RRR (2022) where both the leads got their own themes.

Loved the video and I completely agree with your take. India has so many different industries that excel at different things. I would recommend checking out the Malayalam film industry(very underrated) if you like more art house style films. They are usually visually stunning, realistic films with great storytelling and ofc great scores. I would recommend checking out kumbalangi nights, ennu ninte moideen, drishyam, manichithrathazhu, manjummel boys, premam, Charlie, ustad hotel, romancham, maheshinte prathikaram, ayyapanum Kohiyum, urumi, bhramayugam, home, 2018, thallumaala and aavesham. This doesn’t even scratch the surface and I wish I could recommend more but my comment is already so long.

Bollywood only produces a small fraction of those 1500-2000 films. And yes, nearly all of the industries (catering to different language-speaking ethnogroups) generally put good effort in the backing tracks always. I am surprised you even heard of the industries as generally, only industries and specific films with good marketing and distribution are known outside their native circles. I wonder where you watched this old film.

Brother my trinity of Bollywood are Gang of wasepur 1 and 2 , Three Idiots and Awara. My favorite 3 Bollywood movies well yes 4. But you get what I say.
I'd like to contradict with your opinion. I'm an Indian and I grew up watching Indian cinema. But after watching several Hollywood movies during lockdown, I actually feel otherwise. Now I feel the music in Indian movies (score not the songs) are quite distracting, even though they're good. I feel often in Indian movies, music overshadows the scene and affects my investment in the scene by becoming an element of it's own. It's quite evident in recent movies of S.S. Rajamouli like Baahubali 1 & 2, RRR etc. which have great scores but can be quite overwhelming.
After watching many movies of auteurs like Spielberg, Scorsese and Nolan, I tend to like more the Hollywood's way of doing it. Where the scenes are accompanied by just the right amount of score to keep us hooked. But still some musical pieces made me pause the movie and immediately look up on Spotify to listen later, like Indiana Jones Main Theme, John Wick theme, Driving with the top down from Ironman, Like a dog chasing cars from Dark Knight, to name a few. I hope Indian movies too tone down the scores.
PS: This is just my personal opinion and I've never come across another Indian who shared my views.
I think this is a super valid take! I'm pretty sure the reason I bounced off of Indian movies at first was because the first handful I watched did a particularly poor job with balancing this aspect of the films, with some music numbers I might call frivolous. I think for me I just really connected with it because films from auteurs like the directors you mentioned just aren't always in the cultural mainstream like they used to be (Oppenheimer being an obvious exception). So movies that came out recently feel almost emotionally neutered (might be too harsh). A different approach to scoring like what's present in Indian films was novel to a western like me and was exactly what I needed to wake me up from my apathy for film that I've been feeling recently.
This is a super interesting and fun discussion point for me! Thank you for leaving your opinion I love hearing different perspectives from people. Most people I talk to don't think about film too deeply like this, so this was really fun for me thank you.
The movies you named has music directors for background score who are Oscar worthy. Nolan or Spielberg movie emphasize on background scores beibg prominent. You can listen to them even without the movie. The OSTs are art in itself.
Imagine the snyder movie Justice League where Flash runs. The reason why its elevated scene is because of the unique score that has been created for it. A lot of Indian movies will have big names in background scores and you will feel the difference in when a background score music director does the backgrrather than the generic music director.
One Hollywood Music art similar to DDLJ is Titanic. You know the Titanic Theme and you know the emotion everytime it is played. The score is slowed or sped or or played with different instruments to show different emotions. Its played at the saddest scene and the happiest scene and yet you feel different emotions.

Regional film industries like Tamil & Malayalam have their own variations in the style of storytelling. Until you watch at least 50 Indian movies, don't expect to end up liking a movie. Disney/Marvel just became progressively lazy and playing it safe with music and stories where even the origin story of new characters (like Dr Strange) was simple rehash of first Iron Man (young arrogant rich guy goes through crisis and turns into hero).

From 1-4, watch it in that order. From oldest release to newest. 5, 6, 7 are more drama than comedy but again just like the rest the musical scores are something else.
(I am not gonna suggest shitty cgi movies, those are not the type of Indian movies I go for either).

As an Indian I've always had this complaint with Indian movies, that they are very esoteric and not something someone living outside of India and neighboring countries is going to understand particularly well. A lot of them are about cultural phenomenon in India or about some societal ill or something along those lines which won't particularly resonate with a worldwide audience unlike let's say a sci-fi movie. The Indian movie makers also like to play it very safe, so they don't tackle topics which aren't tried and tested in the Indian market and aren't a guaranteed box office success. That being said, it's only natural that out of the 2000 or some odd movies being made each year, a couple of them end up being genuine masterpieces which could be enjoyed by an audience worldwide. Now for some movie recommendations, Veer-Zaara also starring Shahrukh Khan has in my opinion the best soundtrack in a bollywood movie and the best romantic film I've ever seen, it is silly and corny and very much an Indian film of the 2000s but has a charm which any film in India since hasn't been able to replicate. As for a real tear-jerker, Taare Zameer Par is one of the best movies to come out of India imo. Guzaarish from 2010 on the other hand is a lesser-known movie which tells the sad story of a quadriplegic, it has brilliant acting and cinematography. There are many more movies but this is getting too long already.
