I truly think that with the added difficulty of the Ashlands you could have a totally vanilla play through with a lot of content. Maybe no portals so that you do more building as you get to new biomes, you are an amazing builder so showing that off in little doses of survival could be really cool. I also agree with death penalty to easy and combat to harder. Definitely turn down the raids from where it is at today someone else said, when you stopped showing the extra raids it proves that they don’t add a ton of content. So glad your safe and back to Valheim. I’ve been watching ThreadMenace set and reset the world record for speed running valheim

Welcome back, Hiccup! I fully support your ideas on tweaking the difficulty setting. Reaching end content fast is not that important to me, but 'civilizing' Valheim with roads, ports and new building ideas for bases would be fun.
You need to create a play experience that you will enjoy. So if you need to reduce the raids do it. If you want to keep your stuff on death do that too. The one aspect of your play though that I have enjoyed is having fire damage on and just seeing what it does and how you can use it to your benefit.
So glad you're back Hiccup! Life throws it challenges all the time so it's absolutely understandable to adjust the challenges in Valheim, the escape from the regular life challenges. I play on Hard with Easy death penalty. It's much more enjoyable to not have your skills completely wiped when making the mistake of death! haha
Yeah, for sure. I’ve watched Henrik’s hardcore playthrough, he has very hard difficulty with as little death penalty as possible because it would be super punishing otherwise once you get to the endgame.

As for your hardcore playthrough, I always thought it was an insane difficulty!!! I enjoy your normal playthroughs, so however you tweak the hardcore is fine by me, in fact I would just add maps back (not modded) and yes to not losing everything when you die, the combat/difficulty is punishing enough. I can't speak for others, but I watch your content because of the enthusiasm you have for the games you play, it translates well into the videos and we get to share that when viewing, so I would still watch if it was hardcore/normal or even modded. I would also love to watch more Smalland/Enshrouded or the addition of The Long Dark🙂
Super glad to see you back and having fun building! Happy that you and yours are recovering from the disaster, too. Haven't played Valheim in quite some time, really. Was playing Enshrouded while waiting for Ashlands and got really into it, and when I saw Ashlands gameplay I really wasn't feeling inspired to log in to try it myself. Months later and I'm still not feeling it. New build pieces and plantables are cool and all, but the biome itself is just an overly hostile wasteland without the verticality and beauty of building in the mists or any of the previous biomes. Without that it mostly feels like incrementally stronger enemies at a much higher frequency in a more hazardous environment with more grinding for slightly better gear and food, which honestly seems tedious. Fighting has never been Valheim's strongpoint, and definitely not why I play it. I played a little Secret World (great story and voice acting) for a bit and because a friend was interested in trying it, then a little Cities Skylines to try out some ideas I came up with. Noble Fates was a LOT of fun and the devs are really interested in player ideas and opinions. Its like modded medieval Rimworld in 3D with awesome z-level building. I started an IRL TTRPG based in Pathfinder 1e, which led me to a video game based on that (Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.) No building there, but an intense and super complex character leveling system that kinda scratches the same itch. I'll probably get back into Enshrouded to see what they've added since I left that one and then go back to Sapiens since it looks like that guy has done a ton of updating and it has a cool little building system as well. I'll definitely want to check back in on Noble Fates, too. Sad to say with over 1800 hours in that Valheim may well have fallen onto my "Maybe Someday" list...
Oh, and for this playthrough: I've never been a fan of no map, but you could just delete the mini-map with a mod and only use the big map when needed. when you stopped showing all the extra raids I think that was proof that didn't add content as well.

Glad things are getting better for ya! Totally agree on the hardcore play through. Losing everything is too much of a setback, especially the further you progress, IMO. And I can't imagine it's much fun to have to edit out all of the raids you get while recording. XD

okay, now I've properly sat down to watch... :) The house looks great, I think you're going to really enjoy some of the most recent updates when you get to that point :) (no, no spoilers, don't worry!). To answer your questions: 1) I enjoy your content regardless of how you play it, and given that you only have the time to do one video a week (which is fair, we all have lives to lead) then I think you should do whatever is necessary to make it a) enjoyable for you b) productive (as in, moving you onwards in the game). I've been watching Klauproof while you've been gone, his permadeath run through, he's got 2, one as an archer and one melee, both of them he died in the first run through, he's had more luck with the second archer run through - but it's come at a cost. The incredibly high raid rate (I think it was at max) meant that he got to the point where he was just terrified to step into the mountains or plains (because of the 'you are being hunted' raid) and it almost stopped being enjoyable to watch (never mind, I imagine, to play). I'd hate to see that happen to you. I'm all for making it harder but there are limits. 2) What I've been up to: not much. LOL. Inspired by your last big buildthrough, I think it was a huge viking a frame in the plains with a basement? I built one of those, multilevel houses, I think i got 6 levels out of it by the end, and I finished that particular playthrough in that house (right through to Ashlands). That was a normal playthrough though. Then, inspired by Klauproof I tried an archer only permadeath. Got killed in my first dungeon and I rage quit. LOL Feeling a bit burnt out with valheim now and wanting a break - spending my evenings doing crafty stuff and bingewatching stuff (Ted Lasso!). 3) Other games: I never got on with small land. I played enough of it when I first got it to see it started the same way i saw you start, you know, meeting the captain and going to talk to the village elder, but after that got side tracked into Valheim again... when I went back to Smallland they'd changed the whole thing and I couldn't be doing with it. and now I'm grumpy about games. LOL. But... i have seen a lot of good things said about TinyGlade. a lot of valheim creators are building in that. I even saw a great LOTR Helm's Deep build in it the other day which was fabulous. Very um, musical. :D (Komi Makosako, for anyone wanting to know where). 4) Memberships: if you feel it would benefit you then do it but please not at the expense of everything else you have to do (or risking burnout). Keep enjoying it: that's the important part. :) 5) most of all I'm glad you and yours are safe even if you're not yet back on your mountain. There were some terrible reports coming out of that part of America and I can only imagine it's taken a lot to rebuild (for everyone in those areas, not just you). I'm happy you've come through it and you're bonding a bit tighter with your mother-in-law ... that's not a bad thing. Hopefully you'll get back up on your mountain soon. xxx

Glad to see you back Hiccup! Yes, tweaking the hardcore play through is a must. I am enjoying watching the play through but it was starting to feel like a grind. Adding a mod to only be able to see the map at the cartography table is a great idea.
Welcome back, so glad you are alright, and cool that you kept all your subscribers! About the hardcore playthrough, I really , really don’t want you to lower the drop rate. As a viewer I would much rather watch you build more and grind less. And about tweaking the difficulty, I say keep the hard difficulty like you say, but either loose the no map OR allow portals. I would prefer no map with portals, and I’d say even More portals so you can portal ore.
Your description of what happened is crazy, I am glad both you and your family are safe! Also no worries for the gap in content. We knew you'd get back when you could. For the Hardcore playthrough, I am down with some changes, especially to keep it fun for you. You're in the run long enough now to know what is and isn't annoying, so I think thats fair. On another note, you mentioned "The Long Dark" there at the end and how much you were enjoying it. I completely agree and its one of the favorites I come back to all the time. It also gets a decent bit of watch time out of me on YT. I totally think it'd fit right into the rotation, with the other games you mentioned. There is also an update coming out here in a few weeks, hopefully, that adds in some things right up your alley.

You helped me love Valheim when i first started, so im always down for more valheim. However I think doing enshrouded would be cool. Definitely alot of updates. Might also like nightingale. Do ultimately its what makes you feel good! I know us being here helps, but got to make sure you arent stressed out and frustrated too. You ARE the player!

Those were a bit much all the time since it requires very little to cause them. Other suggestion would be turn down raids, leave no map, but turn on portals. Still be plenty lost, but make it progress faster for you. Can't wait for you to see the ashlands. Bog witch is a trader. All I will say. You will notice new items if you grab some metals, so should be fine to figure that out.

Just hit 1400 hours in Valheim myself.... I found a few mods that makes it a different experience, and I know a lot of people don't like those mods, but I sure do :). (Epic Loot and Seasons are fantastic). I'm happy you're okay, and ofc I didn't unsub! I agree with your hardmode choices, speeding the process up a bit is just fine :)

It’s changes some stuff and it’s better in my opinion. 🙂 I’d love to see you play Enshrouded. I bought it months ago, but haven’t been able to get into it. (Haven’t spent the time to figure out the game progression and lost interest, plus my gaming buddies lost interest too.) but I’d love to watch you go through it. I played a hard core world and the death penalty was so frustrating. I have to admit I quit. I played a world that had combat hard core then through ashlands and when everyone else quit the world ...I decided I had done all the ashlands stuff on hard core, but I wasn't having fun and so I changed it back to normal and im loving that.

Just a heads up the Bog update was a world breaker so your world might not look exactly the same as what you left it... I may have lost my entire mountain home to this update... Also I am very glad that you and your family are safe and sound and that you came out alright at the end of the storm.
I vote to keep it hard but not have such punishing death consequences. Fewer raids. Add either map or portals...I find it fun to see how you try to set landmarks for yourself, but hours and hours of sailing looking for home isn't really my jam. But if you didn't change a thing, or made every setting easy, I'd still watch.
You know that's a good idea for a one-off playthrough, I think it's a more relaxed gameplay and maybe something Hiccup might appreciate after all the difficulties they have had to deal with in recent months. I also loved Subnautica, thought it was great fun.

Glad things are getting better for ya! Totally agree on the hardcore play through. Losing everything is too much of a setback, especially the further you progress, IMO. And I can't imagine it's much fun to have to edit out all of the raids you get while recording. XD

Hey Hiccup! Good to see you're doing well. I was just about to go and leave a comment hoping you were doing okay. I'm glad that you guys are doing better. If you wanna make changes to your hard-core playthrough, I think that's fine, I especially like the idea of using the cartography table, that seems like a cool idea. I also think it wouldn't be a bad idea to ease up on yourself. Of course, you should do what you think would be fun for yourself ultimately. I also JUST happened to start a new playthrough of Valheim last night because I was rewatching your season 4 playthrough and it made me want to play. Now, Valheim is my favorite to watch from you, but if you wanna play more of other games I do like watching those too! Good to have you back, watching you makes me feel at home, and I really appreciate that right now.

As far as the play-through, it’s all about FUN! Who cares if you’re “true hardcore” or just a ramped up difficulty. This is YOUR play-through. Play it how you want to! That’s where the best content comes from. ❤

Welcome back Hiccup! Don’t worry, I’ve been enjoying watching your older Valheim playthroughs while you were gone and now I’m watching your Elden Ring playthrough with Timely, good stuff! I don’t have a lot of time to play Valheim myself since this year I’ve embarked on this new journey of creating my own survival crafting game. I hope to make it as awesome as it can be, and to maybe see you play it one day! :D

okay, now I've properly sat down to watch... :) The house looks great, I think you're going to really enjoy some of the most recent updates when you get to that point :) (no, no spoilers, don't worry!). To answer your questions:
1) I enjoy your content regardless of how you play it, and given that you only have the time to do one video a week (which is fair, we all have lives to lead) then I think you should do whatever is necessary to make it a) enjoyable for you b) productive (as in, moving you onwards in the game). I've been watching Klauproof while you've been gone, his permadeath run through, he's got 2, one as an archer and one melee, both of them he died in the first run through, he's had more luck with the second archer run through - but it's come at a cost. The incredibly high raid rate (I think it was at max) meant that he got to the point where he was just terrified to step into the mountains or plains (because of the 'you are being hunted' raid) and it almost stopped being enjoyable to watch (never mind, I imagine, to play). I'd hate to see that happen to you. I'm all for making it harder but there are limits.
2) What I've been up to: not much. LOL. Inspired by your last big buildthrough, I think it was a huge viking a frame in the plains with a basement? I built one of those, multilevel houses, I think i got 6 levels out of it by the end, and I finished that particular playthrough in that house (right through to Ashlands). That was a normal playthrough though. Then, inspired by Klauproof I tried an archer only permadeath. Got killed in my first dungeon and I rage quit. LOL Feeling a bit burnt out with valheim now and wanting a break - spending my evenings doing crafty stuff and bingewatching stuff (Ted Lasso!).
3) Other games: I never got on with small land. I played enough of it when I first got it to see it started the same way i saw you start, you know, meeting the captain and going to talk to the village elder, but after that got side tracked into Valheim again... when I went back to Smallland they'd changed the whole thing and I couldn't be doing with it. and now I'm grumpy about games. LOL. But... i have seen a lot of good things said about TinyGlade. a lot of valheim creators are building in that. I even saw a great LOTR Helm's Deep build in it the other day which was fabulous. Very um, musical. :D (Komi Makosako, for anyone wanting to know where).
4) Memberships: if you feel it would benefit you then do it but please not at the expense of everything else you have to do (or risking burnout). Keep enjoying it: that's the important part. :)
5) most of all I'm glad you and yours are safe even if you're not yet back on your mountain. There were some terrible reports coming out of that part of America and I can only imagine it's taken a lot to rebuild (for everyone in those areas, not just you). I'm happy you've come through it and you're bonding a bit tighter with your mother-in-law ... that's not a bad thing. Hopefully you'll get back up on your mountain soon. xxx

For the no-map aspect of this run, I think now you can make the cartography table, a map is perfectly fair game. That would drive me mental, lol - I've got a decent sense of direction irl, but I'm not at all sure if it would translate to a video game! Yggdrasil's branches notwithstanding, of course.

Glad to see you back Hiccup! Yes, tweaking the hardcore play through is a must. I am enjoying watching the play through but it was starting to feel like a grind. Adding a mod to only be able to see the map at the cartography table is a great idea.

Welcome back, so glad you are alright, and cool that you kept all your subscribers! About the hardcore playthrough, I really , really don’t want you to lower the drop rate. As a viewer I would much rather watch you build more and grind less. And about tweaking the difficulty, I say keep the hard difficulty like you say, but either loose the no map OR allow portals. I would prefer no map with portals, and I’d say even More portals so you can portal ore.

For the Hardcore playthrough, I am down with some changes, especially to keep it fun for you. You're in the run long enough now to know what is and isn't annoying, so I think thats fair.
On another note, you mentioned "The Long Dark" there at the end and how much you were enjoying it. I completely agree and its one of the favorites I come back to all the time. It also gets a decent bit of watch time out of me on YT. I totally think it'd fit right into the rotation, with the other games you mentioned. There is also an update coming out here in a few weeks, hopefully, that adds in some things right up your alley.

As for hard-core I would say definitely turn down the raids. Those were a bit much all the time since it requires very little to cause them.
Other suggestion would be turn down raids, leave no map, but turn on portals. Still be plenty lost, but make it progress faster for you. Can't wait for you to see the ashlands.
Bog witch is a trader. All I will say. You will notice new items if you grab some metals, so should be fine to figure that out.

Valheim is my favorite game . I have played a few different ones with my daughter, but I'm all Valheim. I'm trying to build and decorate like you. I have a long way to go, but I'm trying. And I like your proposed changes to the hard core playthrough. I think that will help to move things along for you. Can't wait to see you get to the Ashlands. We just started in there and boy is it tough! Definitely a step up in difficulty.

Just hit 1400 hours in Valheim myself.... I found a few mods that makes it a different experience, and I know a lot of people don't like those mods, but I sure do :). (Epic Loot and Seasons are fantastic). I'm happy you're okay, and ofc I didn't unsub! I agree with your hardmode choices, speeding the process up a bit is just fine :)

I’m good with the hardcore difficulty being the way it is, but, if you wanna change it I’m cool with that. If you have fun, you’ll come back for more. If you’re not, you won’t want to and then making content will be a drag and a chore.
The Bog Witch update is centered mostly around food and spells. It’s changes some stuff and it’s better in my opinion. 🙂
I’d love to see you play Enshrouded. I bought it months ago, but haven’t been able to get into it. (Haven’t spent the time to figure out the game progression and lost interest, plus my gaming buddies lost interest too.) but I’d love to watch you go through it.
I recently started playing Valheim again. Been a lot of fun. I forgot how much fun it is to start a new world and character and start from the bottom. 🙂

I played a hard core world and the death penalty was so frustrating. I have to admit I quit. I played a world that had combat hard core then through ashlands and when everyone else quit the world ...I decided I had done all the ashlands stuff on hard core, but I wasn't having fun and so I changed it back to normal and im loving that.
we're from Candler nc. Just now within the week made it to ashlands .

I vote to keep it hard but not have such punishing death consequences. Fewer raids. Add either map or portals...I find it fun to see how you try to set landmarks for yourself, but hours and hours of sailing looking for home isn't really my jam.
But if you didn't change a thing, or made every setting easy, I'd still watch.

Its not valheim, but you must play Raft.
You know that's a good idea for a one-off playthrough, I think it's a more relaxed gameplay and maybe something Hiccup might appreciate after all the difficulties they have had to deal with in recent months. I also loved Subnautica, thought it was great fun.
