What an amazing ability to expose the incredible beauty that nature has put into a piece of wood that most others would simply burn. Thankyou so much fur sharing that beauty and your incredible talent with us.❤
Dang...my chickens would have gone nuts over such a tasty treat! I just gave them a grub about 30 min ago, and they chased each other around for it! Lol
The bowl is very beautiful. While it would have been really interesting to see it done with resin, I’m glad you left it’s unique design alone. Really amazing work 💜
Having watched a few chateau restorations, those little chiottes have eaten their way through so much heritage. Glad to see them get their comeuppance :)
Questa grande scodella è l'ideale per minestre, zuppe ed ogni tipo di liquido !!! Grazie alle larve dei coleotteri !!! Scherzi a parte, complimenti per il lavoro e per il risultato !!!
Nature has its own surprised beauty. You took the unexpected and enhanced what God gave you to work with. It is raw nature and stunningly beautiful at the same time. The work of a craftsman. Thank you for sharing
It may not be great for turning but i absolutely LOVE worm wood. They make such intricate patterns through the wood and the tunnels tend to have a lighter color than the rest of the wood
Most of the wood I turn has those worms or what they leave behind. Over the years I have learned to embrace the worm tunnels since they only add character to the wood turning. Using resin to fill the holes and tunnels only gets expensive since most of the resin is turned away and ends up on the floor.
That could possibly have been resin filled a bit like the table making guy does... get it to nearly final, and then tape the holes and pour the resin, then finish
The grubs are always a surprise you do t expect to see, however it did give the piece a lot more character to it. I thought maybe you were gonna change your mind on a bowl and make a lamp with a light of some sort coming through the grub trails. I myself haven’t seen a Birch burl. The most common burls around here are Cherry burls and I have also picked up a few Willow burls. I would love to add a piece of Birch to my wood turning portfolio. Beautiful piece all around. Nice job
When I first saw grubs like that in my wood, I wasn’t nearly so calm lol. I screamed, did a flappy dance, took a pointy chip of wood and then flung the grub into the snow. Stomping them is probably a lot easier than making them sail towards death through the winter air 😂
You should have said thank you to the fat grubs. Thank them for their trails through the burl, the creative artistry of their appetites. Then squash them. :) Beautiful work on this, just superb!!
Poor little grubs.... they didn't know their lunch was destined to be a work of art! I know the feeling, though... a few decades ago, I had a small spalted maple burl that I thought was going to be nice, but too much of it was 'pre-digested' to do anything with it. Not enough left to hold together. Yours turned out beautifully!
I was thinking the same thing. There's a guy out here who makes boxes and such from mesquite and fills in the veins and gaps with resin that's been mixed with powdered turquoise (or other mineral that looks like it) and silver or copper leaf. Looks really cool.
Would be pretty interesting to use resin with strontium aluminate powder in the holes. It's next-gen phosphorescent pigment which will glow for an hour or more after being charged up.
It always reminds me of kintsugi (Japanese tradition of repairing broken things with gold, ending up with the act of being broken resulting in a more beautiful whole) when I see them fill the bore holes like that. I was expecting him to do that here, too, but was pleasantly surprised by the final product when he didn't. I wasn't expecting it to be equally, though differently, beautiful.
That is a great piece! And I am happy you didn't fill in the holes with resin. Not that I hate resin, because you can get some great pieces that way...but you left it natural, letting the worm holes 'speak'.
Too many people drown their turning projects with epoxy. Great for filling small holes, but some turners end up making projects that look like they are 78.06% epoxy and the rest wood.
What a gorgeous idea! Over the Christmas Holiday season I can see it with a branch or 2 of evergreens, some pine cones and maybe a couple of red or gold balls or snowflakes and a buffalo plaid ribbon bows. Not over the top, as I would not want to lose the bowl entirely.
Great bowl, loads of character. Those little greeblybugs made that beautiful wood for you and you squished 'em. I usually throw them on the roof for the birds to eat🤷♀️.
I agree, I don't see the need to crush them like that, you just had to return them to nature. the piece was beautiful, I congratulate you for that, but not about the worms...
@@gerabkcc yeah, I feel bad for the poor little guys. They were just living their lives. They didn’t know their house was going to be turned into someone’s art.
That bowl is gorgeous, I can just see it on my table with a few balls of wool contained therein…… the leader threads of wool have their own holes…. HOW CLEVER IS THAT? GENIUS:).
Me, seeing him discover grubs: no problem. Me, watching him smoosh the grubs, fine. Me, when he returns to spinning and I imagine a previously undiscovered grub suddenly flying out and hitting him: totally sicks up a little :P
You might hate the grubs eating your wood, I think they did a good job helping make a unique peice of art.
Yeah, all the reengineering they did and look what they get for it!
@BEAR TRAX RC 😝 😂
How is it... One mans garbage is another mans art.
I want a soup bowl like that!
Well, thanks for ruining the surprise!
Absolutely gorgeous, the grubs did their bit brilliantly.
The grubs would have liked to go for another spin, but they had a pressing engagement.
Shame on you… Lol.
*angry upvote*
😂😂
Groan!
Auric Goldfinger lives!
It's like getting a Kinder Surprise egg and finding a cardboard puzzle in it. Turned out beautiful in the end, man. Awesome job as always

I love feeding spiders to chickens and grasshoppers!
Beautiful natural wood art. Turning a possible disaster into a truly stunning piece of artwork. 💚💗
Those weren't just "bugs" they were a feature! 😁
That's what video game devs try and say to bullshit people lol
Goddammit I hate what a good joke that is
The bowl is very beautiful. While it would have been really interesting to see it done with resin, I’m glad you left it’s unique design alone. Really amazing work 💜
Wow! The "grub work" gives that bowl character!
This is a beautiful, and well-ventilated bowl, which should do really well for storing fruit in.
Not much good for soup though 😃
I was think a see through resin to preserve its beauty....
Having watched a few chateau restorations, those little chiottes have eaten their way through so much heritage. Glad to see them get their comeuppance :)
love to watch talented wood workers turn out such lovely art.
Art grubs, pretty cool, and satisfying to watch. Gorgeous end result.
How incredibly beautiful and natural that bowl is.
The worm holes make it so natural and so beautiful and so random I think it’s fabulous.
Olivier, that is stunning! Although it was a LOT of work cleaning all those bug holes, the character in that piece is gorgeous!! 👏👏
Those grubs must have had a heck of a ride on your lathe before you removed them. :)
Grub rollercoaster.
I was thinking the exact same thing…lol
Haha can you imagine the g-forces on those worms.
WEEEEEE
Yknow that makes me wonder.. can grubs be killed by centrifugal force, due to their soft bodies and small size-

Without the worm holes it would have been just another wooden bowl. Well done sir!

I adore the “imperfections”. Clever little grubs and clever not so little Olivier! 👏🏼🤍👏🏼🤍
As usual, a beautiful piece. The 'wormholes' add great character and you have a superb feel for shape. Thank you Olivier!

I laughed when I saw you straddling and sitting on the lathe bed. Well done!
Love it. The tunnels and holes make it very interesting. You could never plan that.

Agree with others, the worms gave this a ton of character.
are you in libertyville ,ill? i lived there a few times
Olivier, je t'aime passionnément.
Great looking Art piece Oliver. Sometimes mother nature provides unexpected surprises to enhance it's wonder and beauty. 👍🏼⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bravissimo‼️
Toss the grubs outside for the birds. They love ‘em. Circle of life.
Very cool. That takes allot of hard work and allot of knowledge. Well done
That bowl is beautiful!!
Beautiful Oliver exceptionally beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Two great lessons here...patience and a soft touch.
Well done
He didn't have a very soft touch when he stomped on them!!!!
Wonderful piece , the worms added character
You should have said thank you to the fat grubs. Thank them for their trails through the burl, the creative artistry of their appetites.

This is a beautiful piece of art. You and the grubs did a great job.
Nobody:
Me: laughing my ass off imagining those worms getting super dizzy from spinning around
🤣
Lmaoo
The heavily infested side looks delicate, almost like a filigree. That's actually quite beautiful
I was holding my breath through most of this vid! TFS, GB :)
Ask the worms how they feel about their joyride 😉😁😂
Very pretty! I'd thank the grubs for the character they added to the piece but...um... they are no longer with us. Haha
Wow! What a gorgeous piece of wood! Great work!

Beautiful….and very gratifying to watch.
Bowl looks great! nice job 👍 this piece was a good candidate for resin.
I kinda like it! Reminds me of lace, almost!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Vous avez fait une autre belle œuvre d'art. Exceptionnel.
I guess no salad or pasta lol! Beautiful, fun to watch as well.
WOW that is Beautiful work !!
That turned out very nice that would actually make an excellent lampshade
Beautiful,i like how you took the damaged from the bugs and incorporated it.
Absolutely gorgeous bowl! Great work and skills
I adore the imperfections in the wood! Clever little Olivier and clever little grubs! 👍🏼👏🏼
It is absolutely beautiful.
Great work. Very trippy bowl.
Does the spinning kill them or were they just chilling in there like "Hmm, this is a rather odd earthquake."?
They were just going about their business, looking for a wood lathe so they could take up a new hobby turning bowls.
We put bugs inside a Testes rocket and launched them. When they landed they were all mushed up and dead.

Another masterpiece!❤
Too bad you don't have a pet bird - yum. Turned out real nice. Thanks for sharing.
Ohhhhh, that’s gorgeous!!!
And just like that, Olivier's aspirations for global soup bowl domination goes down in flames!
I’ve seen bowls like this where the holes and indentations were filled with a colored epoxy, which looked cool.
I was thinking the same thing. There's a guy out here who makes boxes and such from mesquite and fills in the veins and gaps with resin that's been mixed with powdered turquoise (or other mineral that looks like it) and silver or copper leaf. Looks really cool.
@@texasred2702 Same here. If I had gotten my hands on that bowl. That is what I would have done. But with clear resin and powdered quartz.
Yes, the guy I saw at an art fair in a Scottsdale had used a turquoise-colored resin which looked really nice in contrast to the lacquered wood.
Would be pretty interesting to use resin with strontium aluminate powder in the holes. It's next-gen phosphorescent pigment which will glow for an hour or more after being charged up.

A uniquely beautiful bowl!
Travaillé par la nature et Olivier = super rendu final, bravo !
"Get out of there you little shit" Hahaha that was great!! Wonderful video, thank you.
Absolutely beautiful
Hey, you could've gone fishing with those grubs! Beautiful fruit bowl Oliver!

@@kingy002 They literally can't see the wood for the trees.
Should have formalin fixed and preserved the grubs in resin.
Beautiful work!
I adore the shape of this piece and the wormholes take it to another dimension. I wonder what the grubs thought when they began rotating a 2000 rpm.
Love the worm holes, makes for a really unique piece of wood. Thanks for sharing.
Love it. Would make an interesting fruit bowl. But I would just love to have it sitting somewhere in my living room or dining room.
Wow, stunning! That's the difference between an artist and an amateur. I probably would have been annoyed and not seen the potential.
Damn. That is an art we don't see much any more. The days of GENUINE craftsman is fading fast. Thank you for keeping it alive.
Thank you for NOT filling it with resin! 👍👍
Great bowl, loads of character. Those little greeblybugs made that beautiful wood for you and you squished 'em. I usually throw them on the roof for the birds to eat🤷♀️.

Absolutely gorgeous!
Olivier, what a gnarly piece of wood. Well done.
Wow, sometimes the worms just lend to the piece. Beautiful!
Beautiful, natural.
Great job manufacturing sawdust, wood chips and a broken bowl.
Beautiful bowl Oliver. Worms may have eaten on your wood, but the voids have made it special.
That "Nasty" surprise in many cases is worth more money because of its uniqueness. Kind of like burled wood.

Ugh me too
It turned out nice, Olivier. Thanks for sharing 🌞
What a thing of beauty.
antique furniture that has wormholes is even more expensive =)
That is unique and should carry a premium for you on sale. You managed so well to get to
that stage without it shattering. Brilliant
I really liked that brief elevator music you played around 6 minutes in
Amazing and beautiful
I love the piece, and the skill and... I wish humans were better at coexisting with other life 😞
I'm always impressed at the air handling system you have to prevent you from inhaling saw dust and other nasties into your lungs
Wow! A masterpiece….
