I genuinely teared up for Rob's part. I don't have kids, I never played that game, but the father hugging nothing at the end just did it for me...
It was a gaming moment I'll never forget. No one should have to go through that.
All it takes is some empathy. The world lacks it sometimes. But it's great if you have it :)
One word sums up an experience like that for me:

During my last ride as Arthur Morgan in rdr2, when “Thats the way it is” started playing was when I was close to balling
Rockstar is on another level. I don’t know how they know those songs fit that exact moment. Unbelievable.

I played this last night for the first time... it... wasnt good...
I sobbed from that point through the end of the chapter.
I played through Rime with my then seven year old son and I did not see the ending coming - he was totally unmoved by it but I was an emotional wreck - he was very confused about why Dad was suddenly sobbing uncontrollably... awkward...
He was probably thinking "I didn't expect Dad to enjoy the game *this* much. It's okay, Dad. We have other games."
The ending to Spiderman on PS4, the scene with aunt May at the hospital. When she said that she wanted to say goodbye to her nephew, not to spiderman, I started crying my eyes out.
Then seeing Peter realising that he had the medicin to cure her, but couldn't, because everyone else in the city needed it and it was too late for May :'(
Completely with you that tore me apart, such a great performance
I was crying even before that part. When Peter's confronting Octavius. "You were everything I wanted to be!" really got me.
It'll be weird when I get a PS5 and watch the scene again with the new Peter Parker face.

@@user-hi4sm3ig5j - Although I’ve kinda gotten used to New Peter’s face, I still think they made him look too green. He’s 25 and has already been thru the ringer as both Spidey and Peter, so the original face had that distinctive look of “I’ve seen some THINGS, man!”

For me it was the end of Horizon Zero Dawn. If you played the game and picked up on the lore throughout - the ending was just so emotional. Bloody legend.
When the camera pans up and reveals the triangle of flowers... totally lost it
Those flashbacks were done spectacularly.

The bath chapter in What Remains of Edith Finch. As a parent of a young'un myself, I actually had a little cry at the end of that game. Amazing, beautiful and tragic.
I literally had to stop and hug my son after that segment. Same with RiME’s ending, both endings actually.

For me the moment that broke me was when i lost my father and after time i played final fantasy 15 and the ending just hit me when noct said "dad believe in me" cuz i my father didnt believe in me that much

Moment of mine: when Arthur Morgan admits to the nun that he’s scared.
Playing the game as Arthur and knowing his struggles and he never complains, he just keeps going but when he finally breaks down to the nun and you can see the fear in his eyes is when the tears fell from mine.
Yes... that broke me.

When Peter Parker found out Doc Ock knew he was Spider-Man the whole time.
I just recently finished that game again and I adore the VA for Pete. He gave him so much emotion especially in those final missions.
It's a the "if they take me away, they'll take my arms..." that i started sobing.
The ending of Final fantasy X, didn't expect such a sad bittersweet end.
Also the end of The Last Guardian
"Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons". Having two boys myself this game just destroyed me at the end...

Last guardian had me crying at the end. It may not be the perfect game everyone wanted but if you feel even the slightest connection to the game and trico, you will be riding one heck of an emotional rollercoaster at the end.
I agree. The end was rough to play through. And lets not forget that Agro scene in Shadow of the Colossus...
Oh man this game got me good, have never cried at a game before but this had me balling my eyes out 😭 have wanted to replay it but I don’t know if I can face it knowing what comes 😂
Same with me...the exact moment I started crying was in the end when Trico crashed against the limit of the valley while carrying the kid, and then struggles to climb. Don't now why but this scene gets me everytime.
Yakuza 0 : ending where majima lets makoto go and be happy with that doctor in her life
You guys seem to do a lot better than others with making the zoom call conversation natural. Little talking over, and when you do there's no awkward delay. Might be editing, but either way, well done! Makes listening much more pleasant.

When John Marston gets shot at the end of Red Dead Redemption, the only time I’ve ever openly weeped at a video game!
Double for the end of RDR2, cause you can actually feel Arthur Morgan's suffering as he painfully expires in the desert. Also depending on whether you have high or low honor, the last thing Arthur sees is either a stag bathed in warm light or a wolf cloaked in the shadows of night.

When Aggro falls on the final stage of Shadows of the colossus, loved that horse .
I originally played that on a copied disc that my friend had, and the game would glitch around the final boss. So not only did I have to do that all over again, but relive Agro falling over and over. And I never was able to get to the end so I didn’t know he lived. Had to watch the end on UA-cam to find out.
Weirdly enough, Ash's mentality regarding defeating the Arachnotron is a perfect explanation of why I think some people dislike Dark Souls games. Its just not satisfying to lose so much time, energy and years off your life to overcome just one enemy, and then do it all over again.

What Remains of Edith Finch, kid in the bathtub. Rob's constant suggestions of this never mentioned it getting this heavy. My kid was around a year old at the time so it hit hard.
Edith Finch remains one of the best games he's ever recommended. I've never experienced anything like that
Exactly. I burst into tears for like 10 minutes, loudly sobbing. It was a good year before my daughter was born, it would've been even worse today.

I appreciate robs bit from the video. As a father to one son it’s sometimes hard to express the worry you have over their life- the mere thought of me losing my boy makes me emotional. It’s hard to bring up those kinds of scary feelings, but rob touched on them with great aplomb. Thanks rob

Never played RiME, but Rob describing it has completely broken me. Having a 2 and a half year old daughter, it hit the "what if" for me. So thank you for that haha

The inside of Rosie’s head I assume must contain a lot of Patapoon and Parapa the Rapper.
So many parts in Mass Effect 3 that broke me. No idea how I still managed to see what I was playing through all those tears.
What made me cry in a game for the first time was Pokémon Mystery Dungeon on the game boy advance. When you get to know all these Pokémon and you are told you have to leave..god it broke me as a kid!
I love Dave. He reminds me of one of my close friends with a wicked sense of humour. He also reminds me a bit of Ricky Gervais with his mannerisms and laugh.
Honestly, Dave cracking up in the middle of one of robs classic heart felt monologues just absolutely cracked me up. What an incredibly funny moment lol. Love u guys.

Playing Persona 5 ,I got so involved dat I cried when the credits rolled 😭
The whole last part of 'Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons' I played through the blur of my helpless sobbing - gut-wrenching, but such a good game. Also, Final Fantasy X, when you find out the truth near the end about some of the characters you've got really attached to over 50 hours of adventuring - that one genuinely blindsided me and I was so upset by it!
That moment at the end of Brothers when you come back home and the little brother must grow and overcome an obstacle alone instead of relying on his older brother litteraly made my eyes wet, and i am not prone to that at all.

@@darkfelony oh good lord, yes! I remember standing at the edge of the water thinking "I can't do this, he's not here any more" then a little part of me said to try pushing the older brother's action button anyway and it properly gutted me when you start swimming.
The mix of different characters on the Access Team is so great. I love every one of them for different reasons. Dave feels most like myself but with the great spontaneous sense of humour that I lack. Rob is obviously brilliant in so many ways. Rosie is so pure - she has a special place in my heart. Nath I can relate to the least personally, but I have so much respect for the way he stays calm under pressure. Ash fits in nicely so far and I hope they stay together like this for a long time.
When Rosie said "Ah go on!" all I could picture was her doing a Mrs. Doyle [from Father Ted] impersonation saying "Ah go on, ah go on, ah go on, ah go on, ah go on, AH GO ON!!!" Lol

Absolutely Rime got to me. But it’s one of those games you can only play once. And I have lost a child so it hurt that much more.

Pascal and the children in Nier Automata. What happened to them was truly heartbreaking. I can’t ever forget it.

Spiritfarer, every time I sent someone through a door. Even for the characters I didn't like, I cried while taking them to the door. Very good game, very heartbreaking but worth it.
Speaking of sad outcomes in games, has anyone ever (probably when you are too young to realize that many game stories are usually set in stone) tried in vain to find a way to save a character or prevent a tragedy in a game, because you were unwilling to accept the loss? a bit cliche but it was Final Fantasy 7 for me i was like 10 when i played it i think? i played 9 first and remembered being able to save the town folk in the tree city if you took the right paths, I spent hours trying to find a way to keep Aerith from leaving. I remember after finally giving up and going back to her house and the quiet Flowers bloomin in the church music playing and just having a sobbing fit.
I fought the final boss of Silent Hill 4 over and over to try and save Eileen, (who was uber possessed at the time). It took me about 6 or 7 tries.
Detroit become human, during the riots at the end I chose the sing option and it absolutely took me by surprise, couldn't help but shed a tear

I literally just got the Uncharted 4 platinum the other day and that mummy room was absolute nightmare fuel. One of the hardest things I've done in any game where there's really no enemies involved. Not only is the blast radius enormous but then if you get hit even a little bit you're stuck in a stagger animation which means you can't roll out of the way before the next blast which will always kill you. It is absolutely insane.
I’d just like to say that as they were talking about Rob’s entry, I enjoyed the emotional bits. It’s not all about happy/fun times. I think it may be a bit of a misconception that comedy/informational channels have to stay in that realm 100% of the time.
No moment in a video game has ever hit me as hard as the fish cannery scene in What Remains In Edith Finch. Still to this day, I can’t even talk about that scene without tearing up.
When the black mages fight that one black mage on the ship, the slow motion, the music, and even though he doesn't have facial expressions you can feel the sadness in his face
The Last Guardian’s ending broke me. Well not the ending ending but the last section of the game. I’m looking forward playing it again on PS5.

I can totally agree with the U4 mummy section. Nate also takes 50 years to get up even if you just barely missed the blast radius and he doesn't have any urgency to get up when there's one even right next to him
Damn it Rob, that game was just brutal 😳 . But to me, the game that brought me to that point was Final Fantasy X .. The memory spheres, the characters backgrounds, the trials to get all the Aeons, weapons and the roller coaster of emotion between Tidus and Yuna 😭
You're not alone Dave. I can confirm that those mummies on crushing took me a while too.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm's ending broke me
10:30 for those trying to avoid Rob's Spoilers
For me it was just like, the entirety of God of War (2018).
When I was younger, I was physically abused by my father, and he was physically abused by his father - and this isn't an uncommon experience, it's more likely for someone who was a victim of abuse to end up becoming an abuser themselves later in life. The whole narrative of godhood going hand-in-hand with suffering and parents passing on this suffering to their children kind of echoes this cycle of abuse with parents inflicting their trauma onto their children.
There's a line near the end where Kratos tells Atreus about his past as the God of War and Atreus asks him "Is this what it means to be a god? Sons killing their mothers? Their fathers?" and Kratos replies something like "No. We are the gods we choose to be, not those who were before. We must be better."
That entire scene is full of lines and imagery like that and it may have been the first time I've ever played a game and just had to stop and examine my life for a bit. So yeah, that's how God of War broke me and also made me realize why I'm so scared of the thought of having kids.
For me it's the battle at Kaer Morhen in the Witcher 3 that gets me everytime, even though I know it's coming. I also cried my eyes out, twice actually, whilst playing Ghost of Tsushima.
Broke me emotionally were "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" and "Valiant Hearts: The Great War". I actually full-on properly sobbed.
Both are great games.

I was raging I had to fight Genichiro AGAIN before fighting the final boss, a 4 phase fight, no checkpoints is bullshit, same with Sister Friede on dark souls 3 dlc. I've platinumed all the souls games including all the rereleases and remasters and I honestly thought I wouldn't platinum sekiro at one point with the final boss

The end of uncharted 4 having that sword fight on crushing mode. Never again will I do that
The sword fight was a little rough, but honestly I had a much harder time with chapter 20's boat wreck encounter (The one with the 2 Gatling gun heavies)

I cant believe that Rime is such a hidden gem and no one's mentioned it. The ending was the closest I've come to bawling out in tears from any game.
The ending of Assassins Creed Revelation. No great treasuers or hidden knowledge. No greater threat or messages for the future. No books, no wisdom. Just you, fratello mio.

TBH, worst ending is the best ending IMO. It's the only one that has any real emotional power/substance.
Don't worry Dave, you're not alone with the mummies thing. It's a pretty common complaint between the people who have the platinum
I honestly felt Crushing on uncharted 1 was the worst for me. That was one I had to put it down for a few months and come back. But this part of 4 was a close second

@@BlairofShadowsI guess we all have our moments lol, 2 was the easiest for me, but I was out of work on injury when that came out so I had about a week of non stop gaming I could use on 2 but I was also on painkillers so I don't remember a lot of it lol

Spyro 2. Bug Control. This took so long, with so many attempts, flying both directions that I actually thought the game was broken and that it could not be done!
The Babel levels on Catherine spring to mind. There was one in particular that on the EU version is glitched and you can only finish it properly in co-op. Or if you have no friends that like Catherine, by using two controllers. That nearly broke me. I nearly cried when I eventually managed it. My swear box was so overflowing by that point I could have dived into it like Scrooge McDuck.
@@Manudyne Pretty sure they fixed it in other versions so you should be safe. It's still not exactly a cakewalk mind you so good luck if you do give it a go!

Also is it just me that this happens to: struggle against a mission / boss for ages one night so that you rage quit and then the next time you play the game you get past the boss or mission without any issue 😅 so frustrating
It's happened to me many a time. Sepheroth in Kingdom Hearts comes to mind.
When you’ve been dealing with this bloody boss and his huge sword for over an hour, how the hell is he even swinging the damn thing?
Finally you’re getting a hang of the fight and his HP is running low. Then, suddenly, the damn wolf starts limping, hurt and broken he tries to swing his huge sword, grasped in his jaw, but falls over pathetically. The OST which has been mysterious and grand suddenly turns into a melancholy reminder that not all who stand in your way are wicked and cruel. Some just wants to protect the world from the darkness they’ve seen, and the loved ones they lost to it.
Damn you Sif. You glorious grey wolf.
Oh man, yeah, I forgot about this. It's kinda sad, facing him again in NG+ with this newly found knowledge is even worse... But nothing beats playing the entire DLC before that boss fight. The intro cutscene actually changes in his boss fight if you saved him in the DLC, and instead of the usual agressive attitude of the normal cutscene, Sir actually remembers you and is visibly sad about the upcoming battle. Those limping animations somehow hit extra hard then.
Ffx chocobo racing getting less than 0.00 time. So many hours failing. Failing. Failing. Although I did finally get it but only after my soul was destroyed and rebuilt.
Choosing the final photo for FFXV -you know the scene- total emotional breakdown right there. The whole mechanic coming into play and full circle, looking back through the journey...square knew what they were doing.
THIS! That whole scene and ending broke me. There’s me sitting in the dark in my basement at like 1 in the morning doing everything I could to hold back tears. No other game has made me feel that way and I am so glad it left the same impact on other people.
OG Tomb Raider 2 had a lot of rta moments that broke me out of frustration lol. it's annoying when a 20-second time attack has eaten like an hour irl.
Dave - I'm with you on the Uncharted 4 mummy room. It's the only thing I can remember giving me a hard time on the Platinum trophy, and as soon as you mentioned it I had all those same memories coming back to me.

I can relate to Rosie, except for me it was Highroad in the first Crash Bandicoot, the speed run for that level was beyond frustrating
The end of Rime is seriously so heartbreaking. I already knew the ending when I watched my gf play through it, and so did she. Didn't matter. We were both in tears. And when Rob was talking about it in this video, just the visual again of the dad letting go of the cape had me crying again.
I had almost the exact same experience as Dave. That room gave me nightmares!
