- Sam asked me the other day if I'd explain to her how relays work & how to use them in basic circuits, like when installing a set of extra spot lights
Relays are often required when you want to 'add' extra things to your car or motorcycle. They allow the dash mounted switch or original circuit to only have to carry a low current flow, ensuring it isn't overloaded. The main power feed to the new accessories, like a set of spot lights or air horns for example, is kept completely separate with the wiring and fuse specific to the current load required to power them.
I did make a few videos last year showing how to wire up a basic 4 pin relay & another covering flasher relays. I made this 'extra' video as it also covers double acting relays plus Sam asked me so how could I possibly say 'no'!!
So here you go, this is what we got up to....

Very informative once again and a multitude of uses for those circuits. Good to see Sam on the show again, looking forward to watching the diff episode. thanks Andy and Sam.
Know all this stuff already but I enjoy watching you teaching theory. Much Better than I could do for sure. You are very patient my friend. Good for you Andy
Nice informative video.
When i install relays with manual switch i find i easier to install the switch on the ground wire.
Especially if the switch is mounted inside car and relay in the engine bay. Less wire to route.
You only need to find a ground spot inside car.
+seiki Yep. That's a good idea :-)
That's right. Merica! (ha ha) Great explanation on relays. Sam's a good sport too. :)
Presume you could use the same method for two tone horns a la blues and two's?
+Polecat54941 sure can! :-)
does toolgirl Sam have instagram account? would like to follow her 🙂

Does tool girl Sam need an American husband?
Haha! I'll ask her & let you know. Cheers Andy
