I remember his first play "Sive" when it was first presented at our local hall. The place was packed and the tension/atmosphere could be cut with a knife. A very very intelligent man. We won't see his likes again. In this clip he portrays himself as a heavy drinker but that was not the case..In those days if you boasted about the amount of alcohol you could consume you were considered a legend in your own lifetime.

  • @zillionz

No, man was ever born into this world, with such a passionate love of liquor, as myself. It isn't just that I love liquor for the taste of it, I love the plop, of whisky into a glass. I LOVE IT! I love to listen to it. I love to see, the cream, on a pint. I love the first, powerful, violent impact of a glass of whisky, when I throw it back in me, and it hits the bottom below. I chase it then with a pint, and that's even more beautiful still. Drink in moderation, is one of the most ridiculous statements ever made; you must drink, a little more than moderation. My problem with drink is that I was born with a liking for it, as I say. I have a woman who was never too hard on me over drink...
Well a few times, ahem, John said he was going to give up drink, and we said Alright... and after 3 days, we said for God's sake, will you go away, and take a drink... he was walking up and down, banging doors, up and down the street, bars of chocolate... so we said drink it, there it is now, take it, and drink it, that's the way we feel about him, we think he has to have a drink, he needs it, and it keeps him happy, and relaxed... and em, we like him to take a drink, and I like him to take a drink, because of that.
People will get whatever impressions, they like, you know. And eh, people look at me, from an attitude, from their own point of view, from their own interpretation of life itself... they view me, through, the very often distorted lenses, of this em, of this impression, you know. They look through, they look through a glass, and while the glass and the lens might be the right strength, the distortion lies in the brain, behind the lens, and that is what they see.

Some people lead a life in which( due to commitments, family etc) they are unable to enjoy any respite, downtime, pastimes, sex, youth, travel. These are people who work and persists through very hard and long hours so as to provide for their families or other loved ones and maintain commitments through a very thinly spread life. In some of these cases a drink is their only release, down time. It goes beyond the need for alcohol. It marks the end of another asinine and difficult day in which they made it through in one piece.
It may come to a stage where a drink may be their only feiend and or source of pleasure.

I believe I too am a pint man. Yesterday I decided to drink before work. I had been out drinking the night before and had a hangover. Naturally I craved a beer after the standard fry up to ease the symptoms of the hangover. Rather than fight my cravings I decided to see where they took me. 2.6 litres of beer later it was time to head to work. Had the best day of my career so far. Got on with my colleagues better. We had a surprise 1 hour assessment which I aced and I was generally happier. Why is there such a stigma against drinking? Some of us are just born for it

When things go wrong and will not come right,
Though you do the best you can,
When life looks black as the hour of night -
A pint of plain is your only man.
When money’s tight and hard to get
And your horse has also ran,
When all you have is a heap of debt -
A pint of plain is your only man.
When health is bad and your heart feels strange,
And your face is pale and wan,
When doctors say you need a change,
A pint of plain is your only man.
When food is scarce and your larder bare
And no rashers grease your pan,
When hunger grows as your meals are rare -
A pint of plain is your only man
    Brian O’Nolan.
