The spring in Mine was broken. I went to Home Depot bout spare springs for $10. When I saw the broken spring I used Pliers to bend the original and reinstalled it. Thanks for the video it helped with removal after which I just did My Own thing. Salute.
I figured out the problem. The trunk latch worked fine after getting the new spring, but the bottom latch had moved out of alignment. I removed the small cover to the bottom latch, loosened the two torx screws, moved the bottom latch up to its original position, and voila, the trunk latch now works perfectly!
@@E39Source hi! Just to update here even though its a bit old... I bought an actuator/latch used for a 528i, but the electrical connector was a bit larger for my M5. Not sure if there was some change or update to the part but luckily my motor wasn't broken so I could swap them.
I replaced the spring on the trunk latch my 1999 BMW 540i and everything worked fine, until I closed the trunk and ran into another problem. When I close the trunk (with the latch in the open position), the latch doesn't lock, even though the trunk is all the way down. Any suggestions?
Actually something I need to get around to as well as replacing the push button. For anyone who needs just the motor actuator, FCPEuro sells the oem supplier VDO actuator itself for $40 compared to $200 for the genuine BMW part. But if the latch is broken and off like Ryan's then replacing it is a better move.
mine opens and closes fine but just by using the key. when I press the button I can hear the motor "spinning" but it doesn't open. so it's probably that spring disengaged on the latch?
Bro this literally happened to my 1999 528i and I went to pick and pull got the part myself it was 26 bucks and I fixed it. Guess what the guy on the vid i watched before it was that same spring broke and on mine the spring also broke
Hi Ryan, would you please consider doing a rekeying operation for the trunk lock. My key will not move in my original cylinder (corrosion?), which is stuck at 90 degrees in a clockwise direction. It allows slight movement in a counter-clockwise direction, but that's it, and it has no effect on the open/close function. I have secured a replacement lock (from the junkyard) that needs to be rekeyed to the ignition key profile. Most locksmiths seem clueless, as "it's a BMW." The local BMW dealership has quoted $315 for a new barrel, which for me seems excessive.
Do you have an email I can send you a video to? I’m confused on the sound it makes, but I’m pretty sure it’s the motor. It sounds like a machine gun when I hit the button.
My motor literally just broke a week ago lol. Sadly I'm from Denmark so no idea if it makes sense to buy yours. Cheers for the, again, very good and instructional video.
The thin rubber membrane that protects the outside trunk release is almost always missing because opening the trunk from outside using one hand pulls and tears the rubber open, exposing the electronics to the elements. There really is no proper way to lift the trunk open without putting pressure on the flimsy plastic release button or moving your hand after releasing the latch and lifting it by the plate lights, where plenty of dirt always lives.
Ha voila une M5 qui me plait la v8 e39 mais la 6 cylindres e34 j adore aussi parce que ce moteur de bmw peut donner bc de chevaux avec un turbo le 6 cylindres bmw M5 e34
Thanks so much I repaired My e39's Trunk using your video as a guide

Thanks for the video; I replaced the broken spring for $1.99 US and works fine now.
Where were you able to find the spring?
Ace Hardware had a spring that was same diameter, but longer. I cut the spring and made a new loop.
Good one Ryan, any parts at your place? Still?
We're long out of the parts business and focus on BMW service/restoration work now.
thank u i needed this
A trick: watch movies on flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
Cool quick fix..

Would these parts fit a 2000 528i?
Yes, same parts

Cool! Another E39Source videooooooooo!!!!

Quite possibly. You'll need to open it up and examine it.

Re-keying is an art that I have reserved for locksmiths in my experiences. Give them the cylinder and a key and allow them to make them work together!
@@E39Source Thanks, Ryan. Best.

That's bizarre. ryan@e39source.com Could either be the motor failing to move, or the motor not being strong enough to overcome a damaged latch.

I have a 2003 525i and my latch has another cable connected to it, not shown on this video
2002+ E39s had an emergency escape handle inside the trunk that had additional cables interfacing with the latch mechanism.
Do you happen to know where the sensor for the trunk is? Mine keeps saying that it's open all the time.
The sensor is in the latch itself. If the latch is latched, it thinks its shut.
Same here
Changed my one three months ago 😢

Absolutely, quite common. Mine has been replaced and is intact.
Every single video, every single part, every single bolt and clip - everything is OE. Dude, how much did you spend on parts so far. Unbelievable.
Cost isn't the problem, it's a matter of doing the job right.

I hated replacing these if you adjust the latch your trunk wont lock
I had no problems with it lining up and latching again.
I have a worse problem. I locked my keys in the trunk,
Mine just broke two days ago. :(
Quite a common failure here in the uk
C est tres rare comme panne sa l ouverture de coffre perso jamais eux ce problèmes surment mauvaise fabrication
