I just did the same repair on my E39 (530d). The spring ring was broken, but I took advantage of the last turn of the spring and molded it to have a ring and put it back in place…it worked perfectly!
thank goodness for this video i couldn't get panel off i didn't spot the screw inside the handle thsnk you😊

What is the length of the spring? Can’t seem to find authentic one easy, there’s no repair kit as well.
I don't know the length of the spring, I didn't measure it. But if it broke like in the video, you can restore it.
