Michelle hated lip syncing. For God's sake, she ate a banana once during a lip syncing gig just to protest. Love seeing this sung live. Makes you appreciate Michelle's part when u realize her mic isn't working. Best 4 part harmonizers ever.
And then she doesn’t have her microphone handy so she sings into the banana🤣 soo unfortunate her mic wasn’t working properly here, made me realize her part’s my favorite
Mama Cass sure could belt it out. Pay attention to how long she holds that last note. Like WOW, man! Liked reading “High On Arrival” by Mackensie Phillips. Glad she finally recovered from the drugs, at least.
Not to be contrary, but I think michelle really never sang much at all. Everybody else is covering their mic on the stage... They cover their mikes.... Like the professional singer would back then.. Michelle is standing a foot and a half back... With a Tamborine in front of her face... She's the one that said her mike was off. I think she just said that because the reality of it was she rarely ever sang live.
@SammyMaryFR10 in 1977 she put her one and only solo album out "victim of romance" ten years after the band broke up. She sang on a few talk shows then slid into acting. Her solo album did not do well. If you heard her actual voice, it didn't have the reedy power of those studio songs... why? I think cass was secretly dubbing her part. I've done the same thing for band members in sessions I ran. Send the guy on a food/beer run, send the other guy in to do his stuff... they never think it happened. If they think it sounds too good to be them, you tell them you quantized it. Ooh... that makes sense.
Es una verdadera lástima pero en ese tiempo no eran muy usuales los registros filmicos, o si los hay tal vez se perdieron o alguien los debe tener guardados.
@@nickiminaj2976 correct, Michelle was the soprano voice😊 love that cass’s low part is loud and clear in this vid but a shame it’s at the expense of Michelle’s mic. Listen closely and you can hear Michelle belting at the end doing all she can to be heard
At 2:03 you can hear one of the other microphones picking up Michelle's high harmony - and she was belting it out for a faraway microphone to have picked it up.
I’ve watched this a billion times and love listening for Michelle but only recently realized that she is really belting it out at that part. The first time she sings it you can hear her even less, but it’s like she realized her mic wasn’t working so she sang as loud as possible. I wish she always put that much force behind her voice!
Mama Cass sang every part of the harmony. She did tenor when needed, she did alto and soprano at certain points. She knew all the parts. 🙌🏽 She might’ve been a teench high as well so that makes her even more impressive.
For anyone wondering why you can't hear Michelle - her mic wasn't broken or muted, it's just the recording mics weren't set up properly to pick up all of the speakers, or at least the whole range of noise coming out of them. At some points you can hear her voice when she's singing louder and higher-pitched, that's because a mic is picking it up that wasn't picking it up before, either because it was set up to avoid recording a certain frequency (so you can't hear the audience or other unwanted noises) or the mic assigned to the speaker with her vocals wasn't working and the increased volume allowed the sound to be picked up by the mic for a different speaker. It's really all down to 60s technology and bad preparation, it was actually quite common.
This is a great explanation of audio issues that can arise during live performances, but in this case as another commenter so eloquently put.. it’s just because The Who smashed the shit out of the equipment before The Mamas & the Papas went on stage😜
Michelle’s mic was dead as a hammer. Microphones are not assigned different speakers out front in 1967. Now it can be done in monitor mix, not for out front. Live performance was not separate monitor mixes and IEMs in those days. Any monitors at all were a luxury. That’s exactly why the Beatles stopped live performances a year prior to this. They could not hear themselves perform. This sounds like a soundboard recording anyway which is a line out to a recording device from the board. The reduction in crowd noise will come from that. There are thousands of soundboard recordings on UA-cam from concerts long forgotten. Almost every major concert from the 60s on did it and the recordings were saved on tape.
Does Michelle Phillips own this youtube channel? She's the only living member of the group. Or is it an unofficial channel? Either way, thanks for sharing!
Watch their Hullabaloo performance… it’s not 100% live but I believe it’s the only one where they are all singing over the track. I get what you’re saying though, this 100% live version with live band is great in its own right despite the circumstances
Very true. You'd think with backing from a guy like Adler, they're be some live stuff put out. Luckily, this one was pro-recorded...only downside was MP's mike taking a shit.
Bands in the 60s and 70s didn’t have anywhere near the recording and audio equipment we do today , and for some reason they all sounded so much better than artists today
I'm impressed by how the live version of this song actually rocks! It's too bad the mics weren't picking up all the vocals, but still a solid performance.
John sweda michelle phillips (far left) is still alive, she's 73, and i'm not sure what she's up to but i don't think she's making music or acting any longer. cass died in 1974 of a heart attack, denny died in 2007 from kidney failure, and john died in 2001 of heart failure.
@@DedricSilva They were constantly performing, but the only recorded live performances seem to be TV shows where lip synching was the norm. I assume it's due to people not having access to recording devices like we do today, but I still refuse to believe that SOMEONE out there doesn't have a recording of a live performance 😭
The reason they never performed live is they never had a back up band. In the studio they used members of the Wrecking Crew. Why they didn't sing live to a backing track on Ed Sullivan? But some Facts: Mama Cass real name was Ellen Naomi Cohen, Russian Jewish. And The man playing that solo, on an alto flute, on the recording, is Bud Shank. Jazz fans will know him as an important part of the Cool Jazz movement. He reportedly improvised the solo on the spot, one take
jack mehoff I know they we’re married. I’m just saying that the group did profit very well from her looks. She was not a very good singer. The sole reason, i think, why she never sang solo-lines in the M&P’s-songs like the other three did.
Im sure your right Peter she did have the looks. If you dont mind me asking do you not like the song dedicated to the one I love just curious enjoy the holiday wkend
You're very wrong. She had solos on Got a Feelin', For the Love of Ivy, and sang lead on Dedicated, String Man, The Right Somebody to Love, etc. She also wrote whereas Cass wouldn't and if vocal perfectionist, John Phillips thought she was good enough to record and sing with someone of Cass Elliot's calibre then everyone else should too.
So great getting to hear them like this. I think some of the over production distracted from the raw talents. Not a swipe at Lou Adler. They just sound incredible stripped down like this.

I need a time machine to go back and fix Michelle’s mic… or to get her and Mama Cass to share a mic like the Beatles used to do.

My thoughts exactly

And Michelle’s mic just so happens to not fucking work. Ain’t that about a bitch.
Man, they made some great music.
Finally a live version
Michelle’s mike is not working but it shows how much the 4 part harmony is important! Many thought she was just a pretty face. Her part is tremendous!
I thought the same thing as well....Was missing a layer, but still good.
It’s actually cass’s mic that’s off I believe. Michelle did the low harmonies.
But then, it has the dreeeamin that Cass does so I’m kinda confused
