    I identify as vegan, haven't eaten any animal products in 2 years, but I still wear leather backpack daily that was bought as a gift for me years ago cause I'm too broke to just throw away a perfectly good quality backpack and buy a new one lol. The way I see it is the damage was already done and it would be wasteful to throw it away so I may aswell use it till its no good. Vegans discriminating other vegans for not being "perfect" despite them doing the absolute best they can, aren't helping the movement in my opinion.

    • @cheekiestclan5668
      @cheekiestclan5668 5 років тому +134

      Good point, the key is to not pay money towards animal products once you are vegan. If you've already got a leather backpack why would you bin it. Agreed

      What if you got leather from a thrift store? The person actually getting the leather and making things wouldn’t make the money (therefore wouldn’t be encouraged to make more things with leather) and you still get a good quality backpack, shoes, etc.

    • @QuinnF97
      @QuinnF97 5 років тому +33

      And what's more, as you said, you didn't by the backpack; you got it as a gift. So, at the very least, you're not *financially* supporting companies that haven't embraced vegan-friendly approaches to manufacturing their products, so I also don't personally see the issue with you holding onto it.

      Agreed! I’ve been vegan for the same amount of time and I have a purse that is 100% genuine leather, that was gifted to me from a relative who has since passed away. I carry it occasionally (I don’t often carry a purse at all) and would never throw it away. The animal already gave it’s life and I don’t believe it would be honoring it to destroy it rather than utilizing it and it’s sacrifice, just because I have since become vegan after owning it.

I can't often afford to choose the more environmentally conscious option, but I'm making an effort to do that more often.
      I was vegan for 3 years. I used to live about 100 miles from the Arctic Circle. We had regular grocery stores, so it was easy to find vegan foods. Looking at the produce and plant-based meat alternatives and thinking of how far they had to travel to get there (and how much the prices were marked up as a result!), I found myself supplementing my diet with locally raised meat and eggs from a local butcher and friends. I also got a fishing license and a chest freezer and filled it up during fishing season. I think those were much better choices for my wallet, the environment, and the local economy at the time.
      Now that I'm back in a location where eating a plant-based diet is financially and environmentally reasonable, I find myself taking more and more animal products out of my diet. I think the difference needs to be set clearly though. When she was talking about Icelandic villages, seh was referring to very small villages where people live off substeinance foods which include animal products due to issues with accesibility. That has nothing to do with the rest of the country, where you can easily be vegan. Most people can go vegan actually, you don't need any weird fancy products to have a healthy vegan diet. And for those who can't, it's an issue of accessibility, so it really is not their fault that they can't go vegan.

You take immediate offense by what I’m saying without considering there are alternatives. You could probably buy a bike second hand without directly benefiting the bike leather seat industry lol you can buy an old car that is already vegan. Did you know some Subaru’s are leather free and this vegan? Most cars are almost accidentally vegan with the exception of the leather around the stick shift. Someone who is passionate about veganism will go the extra mile to find out where their money is going. You don’t need to get offended by this.

      @Jack K yeah there's flowering plants that are edible in the arctic circle, but if you think people living in the tundra are going to be able to sustain themselves on the ultimately meagre amount of local plants and the incredibly brief growing season, you're quite misguided. shopping isn't necessarily an option either. read about Food Security in Nunavut and you'll understand why. yeah vegans visiting have an alright time in the arctic, but what about the people who live there year round? i'm sure they aren't living on 10 dollar heads of lettuce and 20 dollar canteloupes. hunting for sustenance is integral to survival in canada and alaska's arctic. in order to survive anywhere that isn't a massive centre like anchorage you better hope to have deep pockets to survive on a vegan diet let alone an omnivorous one.

While I was an exchange student in Japan, one of my friends who is Vegan struggled to find foods in some resturaunts when we decided to go out. Even when it came to some boba and coffee shops. Some of the 'vegan' options still had broth or animal products rather than plant based. People around the world have different 'vegan' or 'vegetarian' options. India would be safer option compared to America when it comes to these. I'm surprised within the first question they never mentioned Hinduism sects and other religion/faith that have vegan diets.

I think most vegans feel the need to convert people to veganism but I don't as I know veganism isn't for everyone and it's just completely unrealistic to think the whole world is going to go vegan. I instead focus more on how meat eaters can cut down by having one meat free day a week and still make a huge difference. Doing things like meatless mondays or choosing dairy alternatives are great. I see this as something way more achievable than trying to force people to go vegan and the result for the animals and the environment are great. 😊

There's very little vegan products here, so it's a bit inconvenient. We’re saying, people who claim to be vegan( who tend to be people who have the freedom of choice to eat whatever they want) can’t call themselves vegan if they intentionally buy animal products despite not needing to. Those are the people that question is for, not someone starving in a 3rd world country.

She mentioned a very specific example and I think it's important to acknowledge those exist. Do they have produce? Sure. Is it sustainable and nutritious to only eat those? Probably not. We don't know her specific situation so it's unfair to just invalidate it because you live in Iceland and are having a great time being vegan.

    • @girlbossmiepje

      As a vegan who started out as a flexitarian, who ate meat like once every 2 weeks I can confirm that taking it steady is the right way to test out the waters (and you'll get used to it better!), but eating meat 6 times a week is still way too much, unnecessary and super lazy, regardless of your culture if you live in a first world country. That's my opinion
      tl;dr
      Your culture doesn't matter if you live in a westernized country, you're just looking for an excuse to eat meat. Anyone can go vegan/vegetarian.

If you live in a Third World country where all you have to eat is a chicken or you will die you aren’t going to be vegan. To be philosophical about your food is an incredibly privileged position to take and we should all acknowledge that privilege.

You shouldn’t get a choice if their is a victim involved who doesn’t get a choice. We don’t get the choice to murder or enslave humans do we? You're also forgetting that some of the cheapest foods in the world are plant-based. This includes beans, rice, legumes, fruits, vegetables. No one said you have to buy the expensive meat alternatives. Those exist mainly for people who are transitioning to a plant-based diet / lifestyle for convenience.
