- Five Nights at Freddys is a game that needs no introduction. A vast array of products, games and merchandise can attest to it. But what was it that made FNaF scary in the first place? I'll be taking a shot at explaining how the original 2014 horror title was able to invoke fear against all odds and start a horror franchise empire.

Hello everybody, my name is Markiplier and welcome to Five Nights at Freddy's, an indie horror game that you guys suggested, in mass, and I saw that Yamimash played it and he said it was really really good... So I'm very eager to see what is up. And that is a terrifying animatronic bear! "Family pizzeria looking for security guard to work the nightshift."

When FNAF became popular, some time in 2014/2015, when I was still a relatively young child, I remember being unbelievably terrified of it, yet so unbelievably fascinated and interested by it. I couldn't watch let's plays of the game, let alone look at a picture of the animatronics without having a heart attack, but of course hearing about how the game worked and hearing about all the 4 well known animatronics at the time fascinated me just as much as it scared me. It was hard for me to research about it without running into what seemed to be scary imagery at the time, but that didn't stop the addictive interest of the game. There was something unique about it, probably because of the setting and also because most horror games involve fight or flight and this one uses freeze. Now that I'm in my mid teens and I've gotten used to the jumpscares and characters, I can enjoy the game and lore and even memes, even as the time has passed. This is what's amazing about the FNAF games; they can interest even the most fearful kids and expand on just one game to maintain that interest as the years go by with almost every generation and age group in so many ways.
Also I just realised that this guy sounds so much like the elevator guy's voice from sister location... huh...

That was exactly the same for me. I could barely even handle fan art, let alone the game when it first came out. I never got to play the games as a kid, so I would watch lets plays in total fear. I was first drawn in by the game play, but I became attached to the characters and lore. It's been one of my more prominent hyper-fixations since it came out
when the first game came out, for some reason it felt like the real scariest deal, i felt like im just scared of the characters for no particular reason, now i just got used to the characters screaming in my face
Same! My fascination was just as strong as with creepypastas and SCPs, but, my fear was like nothing I've experienced before.
I’ve never seen your channel before, so I was suspicious when this got recommended to me, but goddamnit this was a fantastically intriguing video that had my ears and eyes glued to my phone. Wonderful video
This is all actually really interesting to keep in mind as a game designer. I went into the fear section expecting the assertation that horror need evoke response to be good fiction, and instead, got an extremely well put explanation of the core fear responses and how they effect the player experience. Good on you.

The first FNAF was so revolutionary, I think it still hasn't aged all these years, it feels almost imposible to replicate and expand the basic mechanics the first game had (there's fnaf plus tho so that might change)

Great video, but I am a bit surprised you did not mention the uncanny valley. I feel like it also plays a massive aspect in the game and why we are so innately afraid of the animatronics.

Fnaf 1 is the most perfect horror game hands down. The way it sets up the atmosphere is just legendary. It seems to deeply understand the fundamentals of horror. Unlike security breach.
