It all depends on the person and the situation, though, and I don't think Finn's arms had anything to do with giving away the plot.

Will literally never met Eleven until the end of season 2 and only properly in season 3. And even then, they never interact. I think that was said more age-wise. You know when kids are young in shows they have the whole "girls have cooties" vibes. I think in that scene, Will didn't understand why Mike liked El because his mind hadn't developed, and matured at that time. I think all he saw was his bestfriend being taken away by a girl. It’s been suggested the whole way through that Will is either gay, ace or both. S1 Joyce said his dad used to call him the f-slur. And S3 when Jonathan and Nancy were together he said it was gross or something and Joyce said, “You’ll feel differently when you fall in love,” and he replied, “I’m not going to fall in love.” So it’s pretty clear he’s not interested in women. But whether Mike is interested in Will is a whole other debate. There haven’t been any hints towards that. He very clearly sees Will as his best friend and is very protective towards him, but there have never been any indications that he’s romantic towards him at all. Edit: Now that S4 is out, please don’t use this thread as an opportunity to post spoilers from the current season relating to this theory or any others. It's hinted at a few times, but most obvious was the painting. El says something like 'I think Will likes a girl or something he's been painting' and he brings the painting to the airport to meet Mike, and then when Mike and Will have a chat about being best friends he picks up the painting before fleeing the house with the agent, and also the 'what about us' in episode 2. Some other commenters mentioned the Alan Turing hero piece as well so basically confirms it. Hope he and Robin have a heart to heart later in the season about their struggle, would be some great character development for the actors
Will and Robin confiding in each other and sharing a sort of bond would be amazing! Also think Steve would find out sooner or later but his best friend is literally a lesbian so one more gay in his social group won't do any harm!
Rewatching the whole series now. Something I find interesting is in the first episode, everyone wants to lie to Mike about the value they rolled for the D&D game, but Will comes clean and tells him before leaving the house, even though telling the truth means he loses the game. It shows you just how much commitment Will has to Mike - they planned it all the way from the start. This little detail isn't noticeable when you first watch it, but when you rewatch it, its way more obvious and powerful.
Seriously how have people not noticed will is gay, they given so many hints and all you need is basic “read the room” skills to figure it out. Mike and will won’t end up together but their definitely going to have an arch of realizing their really best friends

I just thought of another hint in the show. When Will and Eleven had to do a project on their heroes, you get a brief glimpse at Will's project poster. It's Alan Turing.
For those who don't know how that's relevant: Alan Turing was a British mathematician who's known for his contributions to modern computer science, as well as being largely responsible for decoding the enigma machine. He was also gay and, after WW2 ended, tried for buggery and condemned to chemical castration. He committed suicide shortly after.
The painting definitely has something to do with mike, which would explain why he hides it so carefully to keep anyone from seeing it. Edit: Will is such a good artist 😭

Everybody is forgetting how much El loves Mike. I feel like he is a big part of her existence. Mike never saw her as a weapon which everyone else did. I don't know what's gonna happen next but i would want them to be together because Mike is kind of El's whole world right now. It's clear that Will has some kind of feelings for Mike. I also feel like the painting is a gift for Mike. Will may confess to Mike or maybe not. But if the makers want to start something between them then they should wait for the next season. Cause if they do it this season it won't be fair to the three of them. Cause Mike did not show any clear interest in Will, El loves Mike way too much that's why she left that note for him before leaving, and Mike is just confused i guess. I hope the makers handle this situation carefully.
I don’t ship Mike and El in the slightest and I would love for Will and Mike to become a couple instead, but I STILL agree with you. This shouldn’t be rushed. Clearly there is some tension in between El and Mike right now and it could lead to a definitive breakup by the end of this season. And I’d be completely fine with Will coming out of the closet this season or even confessing to Mike. But I don’t want Mike to leave El and enter a relationship with Will right away. Like you said, it feels unfair to all three of them, too soon. El is dealing with so much right now, I don’t think a break up would be any good for her at the moment. She and Mike would have to mutually end things when the biggest drama is over. Will still hasn’t come out or shown the painting that he seemingly made for Mike. I'm not saying that Mike is gay, I'm starting to think he might be bisexual. Will is pretty much confirmed as gay at this point and it's pretty clear to most viewers that he's developed a crush on Mike but doesn't want to intervene with his relationship with El. I'll be honest, in the first 2/3 seasons I never really saw them as much more than best friends. But the end of season 3 and this whole season changed my mind. I'm not saying Mike is "turning gay" because things simply don't work like that. It just seems to me like Mike's relationship with El is getting more and more complicated ever since the Byers moved. And with him being literally unable to say "I love you" to her even when she confronts him about it, was a dead giveaway to me. I'm not saying he's "suddenly gay". What I'm saying is that Mike is figuring out that maybe he likes both girls and boys instead of just girls and he's starting to form a crush on Will and it's confusing him, which is why he tried ignoring Will and kinda giving him the cold shoulder. Obviously you don't have to agree with me, and that's totally fine. And if you ship Eleven and Mike that's cool too, I'm not saying their relationship is nonexistent. But that doesn't mean the makers should ruin the natural flow of the story. They are teenagers that too in a time when being gay or bi wasn't that simple. They are obviously trying to figure out things. We don't know if the show will end with Mike and El together or Mike or Will or Mike with someone else. After all they are young and they don't know what they want. As for this season i think Will is going to confess and next season Mileven will break up. But you never know.
Also, Will and El are siblings. That’s how they view each other in canon so the show disproves that even if Will didn’t have a crush on Mike. Which has been obvious for a while. Also, being “slower to mature” isn’t off the table just cause Will is queer he could be both queer AND slower to mature.
I think Will is a little embarrassed or scared to admit that he has feelings for Mike. That type of stuff isn't easy to say especially cause he's also saying that he's gay.
Let alone this being set in the 80’s. There’s still a sh*tload of discrimination towards the lgbt+ community *today.* Back then was an entirely different story, which is what makes Steve’s acceptance of Robin that much more beautiful.

I don't think will and mike are going to end together, but mileven is destined to end with tragedy. There's no way el is going to survive the last season. It all began with her and it needs to end with her, at least, that's the logical and most bittersweet epic finale that I can think of.
Yeah I have a bad feeling they will kill off Eleven in season 5 finale. But I'm really hoping tge story doesn't take that route and she gets a happy ending. Poor girl has been through so much, she deserves to be happy.

Seems like most of you weren't around in the 80s but I'll drop you a hint, that time period wasn't really hip to out in the open gay HS romances. Everyone pretty much knew what was up and probably had a few people marked but if they stay true to 1980s culture don't expect Will to be walking down the hallway holding hands with some dude.

But on a fictional show with characters whose storylines have all been intentionally written a certain way, you have to assume they're trying to tell you something. Otherwise what's the point of including it in the show? When Joyce tells Hopper that Lonnie used to say Will was queer, and called him the f-slur, what purpose does that information serve? There are a team of writers behind that line of dialogue who are using that scene to exposit something about Will, so *we* know at least to consider that he might be gay. And you're completely right that Will is barely conscious of his sexuality at this point so to say he's bullied for it isn't totally accurate - but the bullying he receives is *specifically* homophobic, which again has been written into the show for a reason.

Will has been surrounded by allusions to his sexuality since the very beginning of the show (take the original character description highlighting his 'sexual identity issues', for instance). Right spoilers ahead here is your warning now. Don't read if u haven't seen s4 ep 1 and 2. (I haven't watched any further than that yet so I I be wrong) THEORY: So, I think this clip kind of proves my theory bUT, IN episode one el says that will is acting weird maybe it's cause of a girl and it shows him painting something that he won't let anyone else see. Later that episode they have a project which is on heroes and he picks Alan Turing who I believe was part of the LGBT community. In episode two he brings a painting (most likely the one he was seen painting in ep 1) to the airport to meet Mike with and he asks will what it is and will seems panicked at that point. Will also looks pretty sad whenever mileven are being adorable which could be cause of general third wheel emotions bUT a IT COULD BE SOMWTHING ELSE. I believe will likes Mike and is struggling with that but I don't think that Mike would like will, they can't break up mileven. So I think that it'll play out like will has an unrequited crush, eventually gets shut down by mike/ moves on and finds someone else? I dunno just a theory I thought of while watching s4e2 sO yEA

I binged season 4, and honestly I didn’t pick up on this until someone mentioned it in the comments of another video. It did briefly cross my mind this season when Will seemed upset at Mike, but I assumed it was bc Will & Mike used it be best friends and Will meant what he said in that his friend didn’t take the initiative to keep in touch. Especially if you’re a shy kid that doesn’t make friends easily. That’s a genuine dilemma growing up & when you move away. But yeah, this video seems to definitely indicate Will likes Mike in that way. Don’t think it will be reciprocated. Personally, I was hoping to see Will get more screen time and character development like learning to stand up for El or something.

David Harbour is the ally I never knew I needed. There is pure delight in his face that can't be faked, and it wasn't part of the question at all.
It’s been suggested the whole way through that Will is either gay, ace or both. S1 Joyce said his dad used to call him the f-slur. And S3 when Jonathan and Nancy were together he said it was gross or something and Joyce said, “You’ll feel differently when you fall in love,” and he replied, “I’m not going to fall in love.” So it’s pretty clear he’s not interested in women. But whether Mike is interested in Will is a whole other debate. There haven’t been any hints towards that. He very clearly sees Will as his best friend and is very protective towards him, but there have never been any indications that he’s romantic towards him at all.

It's hinted at a few times, but most obvious was the painting. El says something like 'I think Will likes a girl or something he's been painting' and he brings the painting to the airport to meet Mike, and then when Mike and Will have a chat about being best friends he picks up the painting before fleeing the house with the agent, and also the 'what about us' in episode 2. Some other commenters mentioned the Alan Turing hero piece as well so basically confirms it. Hope he and Robin have a heart to heart later in the season about their struggle, would be some great character development for the actors

Rewatching the whole series now. Something I find interesting is in the first episode, everyone wants to lie to Mike about the value they rolled for the D&D game, but Will comes clean and tells him before leaving the house, even though telling the truth means he loses the game. It shows you just how much commitment Will has to Mike - they planned it all the way from the start. This little detail isn't noticeable when you first watch it, but when you rewatch it, its way more obvious and powerful.

Everybody is forgetting how much El loves Mike. I feel like he is a big part of her existence. Mike never saw her as a weapon which everyone else did. I don't know what's gonna happen next but i would want them to be together because Mike is kind of El's whole world right now. It's clear that Will has some kind of feelings for Mike. I also feel like the painting is a gift for Mike. Will may confess to Mike or maybe not. But if the makers want to start something between them then they should wait for the next season. Cause if they do it this season it won't be fair to the three of them. Cause Mike did not show any clear interest in Will, El loves Mike way too much that's why she left that note for him before leaving, and Mike is just confused i guess. I hope the makers handle this situation carefully.
FINALLY I AGREE WITH SOMEONE
I don’t ship Mike and El in the slightest and I would love for Will and Mike to become a couple instead, but I STILL agree with you. This shouldn’t be rushed.
Clearly there is some tension in between El and Mike right now and it could lead to a definitive breakup by the end of this season. And I’d be completely fine with Will coming out of the closet this season or even confessing to Mike. But I don’t want Mike to leave El and enter a relationship with Will right away. Like you said, it feels unfair to all three of them, too soon.
El is dealing with so much right now, I don’t think a break up would be any good for her at the moment. She and Mike would have to mutually end things when the biggest drama is over. Will still hasn’t come out or shown the painting that he seemingly made for Mike. And Mike would have to come to terms with his sexuality which takes time.

This is kind of long but you asked for an explanation so bare with me here haha.
I'm not saying that Mike is gay, I'm starting to think he might be bisexual.
Will is pretty much confirmed as gay at this point and it's pretty clear to most viewers that he's developed a crush on Mike but doesn't want to intervene with his relationship with El.
I'll be honest, in the first 2/3 seasons I never really saw them as much more than best friends. But the end of season 3 and this whole season changed my mind. I'm not saying Mike is "turning gay" because things simply don't work like that.
It just seems to me like Mike's relationship with El is getting more and more complicated ever since the Byers moved. And with him being literally unable to say "I love you" to her even when she confronts him about it, was a dead giveaway to me.
I'm not saying he's "suddenly gay". What I'm saying is that Mike is figuring out that maybe he likes both girls and boys instead of just girls and he's starting to form a crush on Will and it's confusing him, which is why he tried ignoring Will and kinda giving him the cold shoulder.
Obviously you don't have to agree with me, and that's totally fine. And if you ship Eleven and Mike that's cool too, I'm not saying their relationship is nonexistent. But this is just what I picked up on.

Also, Will and El are siblings. That’s how they view each other in canon so the show disproves that even if Will didn’t have a crush on Mike. Which has been obvious for a while. Also, being “slower to mature” isn’t off the table just cause Will is queer he could be both queer AND slower to mature.
I think Will is a little embarrassed or scared to admit that he has feelings for Mike. That type of stuff isn't easy to say especially cause he's also saying that he's gay.
Let alone this being set in the 80’s. There’s still a sh*tload of discrimination towards the lgbt+ community *today.* Back then was an entirely different story, which is what makes Steve’s acceptance of Robin that much more beautiful.

i think it makes total sense for them to to this and reasons why are: 1. they have built it up from season 1 with Joyce saying will was getting bullied for being gay, so its not like outta nowhere if he is 2. they need to add something to him like in season 1 and 2 it was big focus on him like finding him and in school he was called zombie boy but in season 3 they kinda forgot him yk so him being gay is something new about him in season 4. 3. they will probably make him like mike but not them be together because mike and eleven WILL BE ENDGAME I SWEAR. 4. back then it wasnt as normalized as it is in this day and age to be gay
Let me re-phrase that wdym "bullied for being gay" will was never gay in season 1 I just rewatched all of it will doesnt even know what he likes in s1 they are still very young the kids at the school or whatever called him slurs, and so did his dad but that doesn't mean that he is gay in s1 what-- my mother used to call my brother the F slur but lookit it that now that he's older enough he is into women
@@JUNKBRAIN Sure, but this is a TV show. Of course in real life we can't use bullying or name-calling as an indication of anything real about the person. But on a fictional show with characters whose storylines have all been intentionally written a certain way, you have to assume they're trying to tell you something. Otherwise what's the point of including it in the show? When Joyce tells Hopper that Lonnie used to say Will was queer, and called him the f-slur, what purpose does that information serve? There are a team of writers behind that line of dialogue who are using that scene to exposit something about Will, so *we* know at least to consider that he might be gay. And you're completely right that Will is barely conscious of his sexuality at this point so to say he's bullied for it isn't totally accurate - but the bullying he receives is *specifically* homophobic, which again has been written into the show for a reason.

@@emilymeyers6069 How? The kids have all had romantic subplots from the very first season, and queerness is already explored explicitly in the show via Robin. Will has been surrounded by allusions to his sexuality since the very beginning of the show (take the original character description highlighting his 'sexual identity issues', for instance). It's always been part of it. What exactly about Will being gay wouldn't fit into the show for you?

Right spoilers ahead here is your warning now. Don't read if u haven't seen s4 ep 1 and 2. (I haven't watched any further than that yet so I I be wrong) THEORY:
So, I think this clip kind of proves my theory bUT, IN episode one el says that will is acting weird maybe it's cause of a girl and it shows him painting something that he won't let anyone else see. Later that episode they have a project which is on heroes and he picks Alan Turing who I believe was part of the LGBT community. In episode two he brings a painting (most likely the one he was seen painting in ep 1) to the airport to meet Mike with and he asks will what it is and will seems panicked at that point. Will also looks pretty sad whenever mileven are being adorable which could be cause of general third wheel emotions bUT a IT COULD BE SOMWTHING ELSE. I believe will likes Mike and is struggling with that but I don't think that Mike would like will, they can't break up mileven. So I think that it'll play out like will has an unrequited crush, eventually gets shut down by mike/ moves on and finds someone else? I dunno just a theory I thought of while watching s4e2 sO yEA

I binged season 4, and honestly I didn’t pick up on this until someone mentioned it in the comments of another video.
It did briefly cross my mind this season when Will seemed upset at Mike, but I assumed it was bc Will & Mike used it be best friends and Will meant what he said in that his friend didn’t take the initiative to keep in touch. Especially if you’re a shy kid that doesn’t make friends easily. That’s a genuine dilemma growing up & when you move away.
But yeah, this video seems to definitely indicate Will likes Mike in that way. Don’t think it will be reciprocated.
Personally, I was hoping to see Will get more screen time and character development like learning to stand up for El or something.
