10 Actors Who Auditioned For Stranger Things But Were Rejected

- Stranger Things has quickly become one of Netflix’s and TV's biggest hits. With its 80s nostalgia and ability to capture an audience of any age, there’s nothing the scifi show can’t do. But - getting to the point of success didn’t come without its low points - including a lot of rejection for the actors and the Duffer Brothers themselves.
Casting for a show like Stranger Things involved months of research, preparations, and auditions that in this case left over one thousand actors with no call backs, no offers, or just flat out rejections.
Ready to find out why actors like Noah Schnapp and Joe Keery didn’t almost make the cut or how Sean Astin's audition tape completely changed the casting crews tactics. Auditions for Stranger Things were just as - if not more- intense than taking a trip to the upside down to save Will.
Did you know we were this close to not having David Harbour and Winona Ryder as our Hopper and Joyce, these two actors weren’t anywhere on the Duffer Brothers radar. The expectations for a Stranger Things audition tape were through the roof, just ask Dacre Montgomery! Some actors even lied their way to the top which almost cost them their reputation and the Stranger Things roll.

I believe one of the main reasons for the series success is having unknowns (except for Ryder) as the main cast. Studios may think established "celebrities" bring in audiences, but I guarantee seeing new faces onscreen is more entertaining than anything. It's almost as important as the story itself.
When they can find the right blend of new faces so you can really suspend disbelief and see them as their characters, and some faces you've seen before so you can experience the, "oh, I recognize that guy!" feeling can work wonders.
One of my pet peeves is when kid actors dont come across as kids ... all of these guys give us those awkward preteen vibes we all lived through haha. I appreciated that and think the casting was right.
Yeah, I hate seeing known actors in shows. I can't think of them as the characters if I recognise them xD

If they didnt pick Winona Ryder the show wouldnt be where it was today. One of the best parts of her character is how driven she is for everything and Winona does the insanity perfectly

Noah should be really proud that he didn't get Mike but Will instead. There is so much more depth to his character than Mike's and the responsibility of fleshing out much of the upside down and the way it works fell on his shoulders in several seasons, and he absolutely killed it. The scene of the Mind Flayer "possessing" him sent chills down my spine. Also Winona Ryder has really cemented herself as one of the best actors of our time in the role of Joyce. While my wife and I watched this show we couldn't stop saying "shes such a good actor" to each other after her scenes xD

Yeah. He showed so many acting skills as the troubled Will. Especially at that episode where he wants to play D&D but the other boys seems not interested. He ended up wrecking their makeshift hq because he thought his friends dont care about him anymore.
My husband and I are rewatching the series before starting S4, we were just discussing the other night how absolutely perfect Winona is as Joyce. I can't imagine anyone else playing her. She was popular a little before my time so I haven't seen many of her movies but she is awesome!
Finn's not a strong enough actor for Will's character.
They did great job with the casting. The kids were legit kids. They had that real awkwardness that is relatable instead of self assured kids acting like adults. You can definitely tell how specific the Duffer brothers were with what they were looking for and refused to accept anything less than that.

David Harbour honestly carried the show. The best actor in the series and really was a fantastic portrayal in S4.
He fits the character of the tough sheriff with a big heart.

To give the role to Winona Ryder was absolutely the right thing to do. Its not because we all missed her so much, its her energy! No one could play a misunderstood mother, who also has a twist in the 4th season and does a very, very chaotic rescue, than her. She is a very special actress and a very beautiful and special person! Also very misunderstood by Hollywood.

I loved the depth steve had in season 1, he could've been a typical all-around jerk but instead the actor portrayed it in a way that felt realistic. He was mean sometimes but you could always see the genuine love he had for nancy in his tone and how he acted towards her.
I feel like the character of Steve was more challenging because of having to find that balance of fitting in with the cool kids, but also winning over Nancy & the internal struggle to be a decent human being. I loved seeing him work through that & finally deciding that being a genuinely good person was more important than being Mr Popular. I don’t think the Jonathan role would have pushed him as hard, it seems like more of a safety play.
Joyce's and Will's acting in Seasons 1 & 2 were the highlight of the show -- such great and talented actors! I'm actually thankful that Marisa Tomei wasn't cast as she didn't seem so "genuine" as Spiderman's aunt, imo.

Fun fact: The Duffer Brothers actually asked Stephen King if they could make a movie of IT, but Stephen King rejected them. So they made Stranger Things
They probably got rejected because somebody already wanted to do it. Oh well I'm glad the Duffer bros. made Stranger Things. Stephen King says he loves the show too.

No they pitched their idea to direct “IT” there were many directors who did because the people with the movie rights were already planning to make it they were just looking for a director
but then once they weren’t chosen they thought and this is directly from an interview “what if we could tell the story in eight hours” so they decided to make a show and that’s when they created the show based off of IT and that’s why it takes place in the 80’s well also because they grew up in the 80’s
And that’s why they have so many references to Stephen king books
Funny how Finn starrs in both ST and IT, shows how much he fits in both worlds, which are in some ways very similar
They’re as iconic as the Harry Potter kids. Stellar, perfect casting and I can’t imagine anyone else replacing them.

I feel like the role that couldn't have been replaced with another actor was Joyce's role. It is such a unic and iconic role in the series (especially season 1) and she played it perfectly to be the caring mother we saw.

@Jane Dhdhdb I agree about her being one of the only ones who doesn't suit her character. I can't stand Joyce, I hate all scenes with her in it, bc I can't stand Winona's portrayal of her. I think Toni Collette would have made the perfect Joyce! I know I'm in the minority, but I think Winona is terrible in this role. Imo she's well known for being around so long, not bc she's a good actor. Bc she's really not. Her lines change from movie to movie, but nothing else does. It's like she just plays herself in every movie she's ever been in.

EXACTLY. Ryder played that role like no one else. I like Tomei, love few of her performances but I love her far more as a comedic performer. Ryder is FAR endearing and loving in my opinion and her style worked perfectly for the role of a misunderstood mother. The way she nailed that desperation in the very first season when the show just started and we ourselves were left in dread of Will's mysterious disappearance, was just... powerful!!!

Fun fact: no matter how played the characters people will ALWAYS say “no one can replace the cast” but if someone else was out in a role you would say the same thing. E.g. Stranger Things and Harry Potter
I can't express how happy I am that there were people present during the casting that pushed for new actors in the industry rather than pick actors that were already big and famed from already being in the industry. I honestly think there's potential to ruin films and series by loading them up with big names instead of investing in new talent and faces. Showing new talent and giving people the opportunity to show their skills and take part in great storytelling and filming lets the film industry grow and diversify. Could you imagine any of the characters in stranger things being played by another person?
I'm just grateful that they cast Winona. I missed her. She was just an icon in the 90's. So beautiful.

I can see Marisa Tomei for sure. She would fit Mike’s mom more though. If Naomi Watts was Joyce I feel the entire series would go into a permanently dark & depressive state with zero enthusiasm lol.
It's like Goonies, it's for kids, teens, and adults. The scary-aspects of Stranger Things increases as seasons progress, and parents should be cautious of kids who are scared of horror things (I was one of those kids lol). But, so many kids around the age of these kids could and are growing up with the series and the seriousness and scariness increases in turn as everyone (including the audience) grows.
I was a scaredy-cat as a kid but I always loved sci-fi and fantasy. Movies like The Goonies, E.T., Escape to Witch Mountain, etc. were things that I loved that excited, scared, and inspired me and were also SO much for adults. It's what brought me to other shows I fell in love with in my mid-to-late teens - Doctor Who, Supernatural, etc.
Shows and Films made for everyone that have a sense of adventure, fear, and fantasy are the best!
Stranger Things is an incredible show! The plot is very unique, the scenes are breathtaking, the character development is amazing, I am very excited for what’s going to happen next in Season 4!

Joe Keery's Steve Harrington is spot on, for some reason I totally believe he is actually living in the 80's when watching the show. He just somehow reminds me of someone I might have known from that period.

I think they've made an excellent decision with David Harbour. He's one of my faves in the series :). Overall, the performance of the entire cast was astounding---and just blew me out of the water lol.
ST is one of the most remarkable series. They are perfect for the role they portrayed and you can see how wonderful their bond was. I do admire everyone who became part of it but most especially are el, will, mike, lucas and dustin. They’ve grown so much throughout the series. For sure, they will forever be thankful for this huge success in their career ❤️

Yeah the scene in season 4 volume 2 when Eleven has just crashed the helicopter in the desert. She's re-united with Will and Mike. Millie hugs Mike for just seconds in comparison to Will.
For me the chemistry between Millie and Finn died after the first season.
I wouldn't change the casting, but Noah as Mike would have been interesting. I agree.
Noah on screen seems to be the kind of actor who can sneak up on you, be nuanced. Noah might make different choices with his acting. But the cast is amazing.

Marisa Tomei is an amazing actress. I think she would have done fine & given the show a little more stability/less chaotic feel. Winona just has this “off in her own world” vibe at all times which can be exhausting. I definitely liked season 1&2 way more than 3&4. Felt way more organized & focused & not all over the place with so many moving parts. Simple is better.

Weird thing is companies like WB are still willing to employ the likes of Amber Heard even though she was foound guilty of beating up JD, while Winona Ryder's issue was very mild.

Winona Ryder was 1000% the right choice and as much as I love Sam Rockwell and want him to be in everything, David Harbour really nailed the part.
He’s so much better in season 4, the constant yelling and temper was getting on my nerves. Hate to see hopper suffer but glad the actor got to play more layers than just yelling all the time 🙄 His temper and Will’s really annoyed me the first 3 seasons

Idk I actually liked the idea of max and billy moving away from California because of Neil and Susan, and being salty about it. I just kinda wish Billy had seen Max sneaking out or something and had no choice but to go with her. Then he could have became a part of the group and who knows, maybe he would start being nicer after becoming friends with them. I also thought Steve and Billy would make a pretty bada** duo. Though that would ruin season 3 because

Then Billy wouldn’t have gotten flayed and if it wasn’t Billy they would have had to flay somebody else. Or make an entirely new character but then it would take forever for them to find out who was flayed.

Carmen Cuba has done amazing throughout the entire series. All 4 seasons have been great, and it all comes back to her. Every actor has really nailed their character.

I liked season 1&2 way more. Felt way more focused on the characters & their relationships whereas 3&4 are all about stopping the tornado man turned meat monster turned possessed mummy.
They made the right choice for every single actor & actress in this show.
Especially Hopper knowing that he wasn't on their radar & someone had to push & push for him against large odds..... they would have never found a better hopper.
Meh, everyone except Max. She has the right look but her acting leaves a lot to be desired. Always takes me out of the story whereas the others immerse me more into it. (Honestly Lucas isn’t the best either but again he has the look of cute but awkward kid)

This is the only series I’d rewatch again and not get bored. If I rewatch the seasons, it’d be my 4th time.

And not everyone who has a profile picture of a Korean dude is young. Rewatching series is my choice and I certainly won’t regret anything in the future because it’s not that deep.

Gaten actually didn’t originally audition for dustin either. he auditioned for Mike but the duffers didn’t see him in that role so they made him read lines for Lucas and then ofc Dustin. They said after that they knew he was going to be Dustin and that it was the role was perfect for him.
I like Winona as the mom but I think Marissa would have done a great job as well I’m glad they cast everyone else they did soooooooo looking forward to season 5

The story about david harbur is wrong. Ross duffer said in an interview,” When we were writing the story for you know season 1, we were imagining david harbour to play as hopper, we wrote the entire hopper sequence with him in mind...”
David Hopper himself said in an interview that he was not their first choice.
