Mississippi State vs Memphis WILD Ending | 2021 College Football

- The game between Mississippi State and Memphis had a wild ending as the game had multiple controversial calls by the refs and came down to the wire. First, Memphis returned a punt 95 yards to the end zone to take a 28-17 lead. However, the play was controversial because it looked like the refs had already signaled for the play to be dead before Memphis's Calvin Austin scooped up the ball and returned it all the way. Mississippi State answered on the following drive, and cut the lead to 28=23 after failing to convert on a two point conversion. Then, Mississippi State appeared to recover an onside kick. However, the refs called a questionable illegal block on the play which resulted in Memphis getting the ball. The Tigers kicked a field goal, extending their lead to 31-23. Then, with under two minutes left, the Bulldogs put together a lightning fast drive and went 75 yards down the field in just two plays to cut the lead to 31-29. They failed to convert on the two point conversion however, and Memphis held on for. a big time 31-29 victory over Mississippi State.

I know everyone saw the Memphis punt return, but the full ending of the game was almost just as wild. I can definitely see why Miss State fans were a little mad after this one, a few controversial calls didn’t go their way. I have another crazy ending video coming out later tonight, be ready 👀
Can’t wait to see it PSC Highlights let’s go
Yeah we definitely shouldn't have won this game but a win is a win I guess 😅
Honestly the game should've never been that close. They can talk about the officials for a couple of play, but they set SEC records for many offensive categories in this game and only scored 29. That was the biggest problem. Memphis had a bend, but not break defense all day and it paid of for them. A genius play by the Memphis player as well to understand that's not a dead ball until the ref blows his whistle. It's not a touchback or in the end zone. On any kick in the field of play, it's a live ball and you must continue to be in POSSESSION of the ball. Even Mike Leach said this after the game. You can't just touch it and leave the ball sitting in the field of play. It doesn't matter on a kick play.
@@jamiethornton6101 that ball was a dead ball. The sec even said so. State lost the game because leach can’t run in the ball in the redzone. That punt or any of that other shit wouldn’t have never happen if he just run the damn ball.
@@sandystewart6654 The SEC didn't say that. They said it was a live ball but because an official was waving his hands as if the ball was dead, it should've been ruled dead at that point by replay. Go check the statement by the SEC and they clearly say that. Even Matt Austin the retired SEC ref said the same thing. The rule clearly states you must maintain possession of a kick that's not in the endzone until the official blows it dead. The state player didn't do that.
Before anyone takes it out on Memphis, this was an SEC officiating crew. Questions should be answered right there. With Love, an Arkansas fan.
SEC crews had a bad weekend

@@JG-zu8fv Tim Tebow and Florida sound familiar. God, I still haven't seen a game more obviously thrown. Two drives with some of the most ridiculous calls in the history of the game. This was a joke compared to that.
The refs pulled this one out. Finding a penalty on a possession review is unbelievable. The fixes are way too obvious now days.
I’m pretty sure refs can’t even call a penalty from a review to begin with. Not even sure how that’s an illegal block, cause that happens on just about every onside kick too
@@kevinmitchell2089 ...it’s an illegal block because the ball hadn’t traveled 10 yards yet.
You can clearly see the blocker charging the Memphis player before the kicker recovered the ball...and it is indeed reviewable after the fact.
Check the rule books. I literally just read it to make sure my post was correct.
Jackie Clark ok, I don’t remember when that became a rule. Before you’d always see the kicking team get to the line first and kind of cancel out that first line of the receiving team. It always makes sense though, kind of like obstruction in rugby.
@@kevinmitchell2089 ...Yeah,it's always been the rule, but most people don't know because it doesn't happen too often.
It has similar principles as the obstruction rule in rugby.
The kicking team can't start blocking until the ball has gone 10 yards,or when the ball is actually in their possession...then they become the offensive team again.
The other thing that people didn't know is the illegal block ruling can be reviewed when watching replay, even if it's initially missed.
I think once we all get a better understanding of the main rules,we'll all be less stressful! 😃
The kid from Memphis fully understood the rules on that punt return, otherwise he never would've tried to go between all those defenders..
Just think about it,he could've let the ball be dead, and not risk a possible fumble and give MSU the ball on the 5 yard line...that was a smart YET risky as hell play!
@@jackieclark8253 The review was for illegal touching. I don't think you can add the flag for the obstruction later.
The review was for illegal touching. You can't review for the illegal block when it wasn't flagged. These refs need to find another profession.
SEC crew. No big surprise.
just gonna keep it short, they can and it's in the rulebook
The SEC crew of refs cost Mississippi State the game on two very bad calls. First was the call by one of the refs that play on the punt was dead. Yet one of the Memphis players got the ball and went in for a touchdown. Very bad call! The refs signaling that the play was dead and of course the Mississippi players responded as though the play was dead. On the next bad call, there was review of an onside kick recovered by Mississippi in which Mississippi got the ball. And it was a review. But the refs stated that there was a penalty on Mississippi on the play. Since when is a penalty call allowed to be called on a review. This is something new. Oh right! It's because you can't use reviews to call penalties other than targeting situations. This crew should be known as the Marx Brothers. Or did they get this crew from a Crackle Jack box? SEC officiating at its worse.
May I ask how you can throw a flag on something you aren’t even reviewing? Completely blown game by the refs.
Dude exactly! You review a play for something completely different and come out of it with another flag called! Then you call a play dead by waving arms, throwing a marker and blowing the whistle but yet allow a touchdown by the other team! I agree sir this was a botched game! That ref should be fired!
Lol to answer in short you can’t 😂😂 and what threw me off even more he said the kicking team recovered it so they have to rekick it for a 5 yard penalty instead of 10 yards like what??? That literally sounded like they made it up as they went .. hell it was a onside kick who tf was blocking 😂
I have absolutely no pony in this race, ZERO.. Amazing that Mississippi St. had to play Memphis and the Officials and still almost pulled this game out.. What horrible officiating and the fact that we live in this tech day and age and they have all the video tools at their disposal and they still can't see an official waving a play dead astounds me.
Im not a fan of either team. But I am a fan of those punk ass refs getting fired.

Tennessee got screwed by this same crew. Stupid or corrupt?
So if I understand correctly, if the ref does not blow the whistle, then the play is still live, regardless of hand signals. I’m still confused how it’s not a downed ball though, do they have to actually pick it up?
I also always thought that on a kickoff or punt that if the kicking team gets possession of the ball before the other team touches it, the play ends where the ball is downed at.
He actually needed to possess the ball not just bat it like a cat. Had the Mississippi State player picked it up it would have been a dead ball. If the ref called the play dead after the Memphis player picked the ball up which he might have done it would have been another mistake by the refs.
@@Velnix21 key word is possession.
Just like on a throw it's not a catch if a receiver only touches it or tips it and ball falls to the ground
@@chuckhoskins9169 y’all crazy even the sec said the play should have been called dead ball. It should have been reviewed and corrected but obviously the fixed was already in by then
Yes picking up the ball confirms you have down the ball. Watch NFL teams the covering player will pick up the ball and if they don't pick it up, you will see the return man attempt to pick up the ball and run with it. The play continue until the whistle. The first thing the ref should do is blow his whistle in the process of waving the play dead. This is taught at the high school level for officials. The SEC allows these officials to make errors week in and week out with the accumulations of errors over the past twenty years to finally show there is a major problem. In other words they are the least qualified officials for power five conferences and dare I say probably in the entire division one football program. A full house cleaning is in order with those in charge at the top SEC positions being shown the door.

The other thing in this game was that on that punt return, there were two players wearing #4 for Memphis, so they should have had a penalty on top of the ref blowing the play dead.
EDIT: You can't see it in this clip, but they talked about it during the broadcast. The return guy and someone trying to block the punt both had #4 jerseys on.
HE DIDN'T BLOW THE PLAY DEAD! Yes, the two #4s should have drawn a penalty but the play wasn't blown dead.
@@tampazeke4587 Well, he didn't blow the whistle, but he definitely waved his hands, which would have influenced many players on the field to thinking the play was over.
@@ruferd exactly right. Credit to the Memphis player, because on any kick the only time the ball is dead is either if it's in the endzone taking a knee or having possession of the ball until the ref blows it dead. Those are the rules. He tapped the ball to a stop and got up. Meaning that the ball is live. The refs made their second mistake on the play (first not calling Memphis for a penalty for having two players with the same number) by starting to wave his hands to indicate a dead ball. The other official to the right of him never blew it dead and understood it. He quickly lowers his hands and watches, understanding his mistake. You rarely see someone take advantage of that play, like the Memphis player did. Obviously a very smart play by the memphis player and a well coached team.
You can see it in the clip. Center of the field at 0:32 and obviously the returner at 0:40
Let's not forget #41 walking off the sideline during the play with no helmet.
